  • Arthur Szyk featured very early on in the unsung heroes series, and like others I'm pleased to return to him and his work in a solo video more in line with his status and significance as an illustrator.
And this time I think I've even pronounced his name correctly.

...And you have contributed to keeping Szyk's work alive, too, Pete. Thanks for this, some incredible art. Gouche and I never got along, so I'm even more in awe of how he handled the medium. Also liked Szyz's take on the Four Freedoms; we're so conditioned to see only Rockwell's versions. An interesting video might be Bible/religious illustration through the ages (don't know many, Doré comes to mind first...). Great work as always, Pete. Take care, hope you're getting some sunshine!

Hi Doug, and yes I've just come in from helping the missus stick a few new plants in the garden, and with luck a refreshing glass or three admiring our handiwork as the sun goes down. Sometimes even Manchester is bearable. And I do have a piece on 6 centuries of Biblical illustration almost ready to go. It's been an immense and difficult undertaking and I bet it doesn't get a lot of views, but either way it'll appear in a month or two.

Szyk's artwork has formed part of my mental furnishings since I was a kid: My parents kept copies of his illustrated Andersen's fairy tales and Arabian Nights in the bookcase (which I now have at my own house). The first video that featured Szyk inspired me to add his Canterbury Tales to my collection.I've purchased a number of books I hadn't previously known about, after viewing your gorgeous and highly informative series. Thank you, so much. You are performing a great service to our species.

Always glad when you highlight fellow artist I admire. My mother has The Book of JOB and Chaucer in her library, as a teen I started pouring over the illustrations. Syzk’s works are so charming and well rendered, and beloved even if some don’t know him by name. While creating props and sets for a Shakespearean summer stock in upstate NY I found many torn out pages of his work in a barn. Actually didn’t know he used gouache, for some reason I’d always imagined them as heavy watercolors. Wasn’t till many years later I became familiar with his political work, now with the internet he’s easier to find. Grateful again for your tribute, he definitely deserves wider recognition and acclaim.

    • @petebeard
      @petebeard  ปีที่แล้ว

Hello and thanks for your comment and appreciation. And it seems he used both gouache and watercolours, although more frequently the former. If you zoom into a decent resolution image you can see the fine individual brush strokes associated with that medium.

Thank you. The Book of Ruth, Job, etc. were first issued by George Macy in the Limited Editions Club, later reprinted in his Heritage Press. You brought back many wonderful memories. My father, and later myself, were members of the Limited Editions Club. I sold my fine press book collection to finance immigrating to Wales. I did not sell "Ink & Blood", which was signed to my mother. I gave that volume to my niece. An image you did not use in your superb video was of Queen Elizabeth and the quote, "“I know I have the body of a weak and feeble woman, but I have the heart and stomach of a king, and of a king of England, too.” From childhood I was deeply impressed by that image. Again, thank you.

An absolute genius!!! I first became aware of his wonderful art when my father bought me a record album of Danny Kaye reading the stories of Hans Christian Andersen. The album cover was the art of Arthur Szyk. Years later, I was able to see an exhibition of his in Berkeley, California and even purchased a couple of prints. I also enjoy a reprint of the poetry of Omar Khayyam. Last year, I received a commission to paint images of the three wise men. I did them in an illumination style "à la Szyk".

Hello Pete! In Szyk - totaly unknown for me - we have found a great artist ( and I'not discovering America ! ), in the ancient medieval art - completely updated - of illumination. The borders between illustrations, the composition, the scenification of stories...all remember us, repeat, in a modern style, the handmade illuminated book's.
It's one of my searchs, the evolution of illumination art....not comic art....it's another quality step, may I can say "intellectual step".
The pre war illustrations, are also, not only great art rather than an allert about the times to come.
    Another thanks for your work.

An attention to decorativeness and detail in his literary-illustration and religious modes unequaled until the (in a very different context) psychedelic work of the 60s (and i would bet those artists remembered Szyk well too) But when the merciless skewerer of Nazidom maintains silence on the Katyn massacre and the takeover of his country...can you blame HUAC for getting suspicious?

OMG! What beautiful and rich illustrations! The complexity and richness of his color are almost overwhelming! The borders could be studies in themselves!
Your closing with Chopin's music and a series of luscious paintings reveal your own ability to showcase and elevate Szyk's work!
Question: His darker (almost black works), are they graphite or pen and ink? Some of the P&I are obvious. Others are unknown to me - but gorgeous! Tnx! REALLY Thanks!

Hello again and many thanks for your even more than usually enthusiastic response to this video. And I'm glad to say there seems to have been a very positive reaction to Szyk's remarkable output from many viewers. Regarding the monochromes I couldn't say for sure, as really close examination tends to get overly pixelated but if I had to guess I'd say sometimes all ink, sometimes pencil and sometimes both. But we would need to see them in the flesh to be sure and in my case that's about as likely as my hair growing back.

Hi Pete, impressive video as always. Unfortunately, you fell into a trap with your choice of music that many have fallen into before you. The third (?) song " Spring Waltz " is unfortunately not by Chopin. It is by Paul de Senneville, a contemporary. So there could be copyright problems because of that ...

Hello and thanks for the comment. I'm a yahoo when it comes to classical music and only used Chopin because I knew he was Polish. But other than the first piece (which I only recognised form a Bonzo Dog Doo Dah band album) I knew none of it and simply downlaoded a file claiming to be his work. So far nobody has complained about copyright but if they do I'll re-upload with a new track.

Hello and many thanks for your appreciation of the channel. I have already featured Szancer in unsung heroes 16. There are a few other Polish illustrators in the series too, and when I upload instalment 100 I'm posting a complete list of those featured in each video so far. So I hope you will find that helpful. I love Szancer's work and would have liked to give him his own video, but like some others there doesn't appear to be enough biography to work with. And my apologies for pronouncing his name incorrectly in the video.

His prophetic satire was so accurate.
Why don't they look at (listen to) fools, kids and one should add artists,as the saying goes....
If you would give us the information, of whom were those beautiful piano pieces in the background ,for the uneducated but appreciating lot.

Hello and many thanks for your appreciation. It's good to know that viewers enjoy the channel content. I can't be a lot of help regarding the music - other than that they are all (or so I thought) compositions by Frederic Chopin. I'm a complete ignoramus when it comes to classical and that is borne out by the fact that a viewer has very nicely pointed out that the third piece used isn't actually by Chopin at all. But I just got them from a youtube download so if you search for Chopin's piano pieces I'm sure you'll find them and plenty of other similar melodies.

Hello there! I just came across this channel, and to say i'm amazed would be an understatement. I'm not knowledgeable at all regarding illustrators, but perhaps you have heard about an artist called William Moyers, or maybe even you have already mentioned him at some point? I'd love to get to know about his work. Sorry if i'm asking the obvious question here, as i said i know very little about this field and would prefer to know whether you have a video on him without going through every one of them (i will probably do so anyway tho)
Thanks for your work and cheers from Spain!

Hello and many thanks for your favourable opinion of the channel. And more thanks for the name William Moyers, who I had never previously heard of. I would have liked to feature him in the unsung heroes of illustration series, but sadly he was born a bit too late to qualify. There's no reason you would know this but the latest date of birth is 1910. Unfortunately this means leaving out later arrivals such as Mr. Moyers. But I'm still grateful that you have introduced me to his work.

Hello and many thanks for your appreciation, and suggestion for a video topic. But I'll leave that subject to others as it;s a real blind spot for me, and generally I confine myself to illustrators who are no longer with us. Occasionally I feature contemporary illustrators in the later stages of historical overview videos such as Grimms or Shakespeare, but it's not my area of knowledge.
