  • This video about the spectacularly talented Fritz Eichenberg is not an exhaustive look at his entire body of work. In his lifetime he created a vast amount of illustration and graphic art, and consequently I have confined myself to a review of many, but far from all his many achievements.
But I hope that what there is gives a balanced and absorbing account of what I think are some genuine highlights. And although much of his work is not for those who don't share his obvious fascination for the darker side of life there are also a reasonable number of examples of his more lighthearted work too.
And for thse who need a text file here are 76-100. The rest can be found at 75 and 76

Very enlightening. My mother studied art after high school, in the 1930's in Colorado, working most in charcoal and then oil. She did some nice work, then paused to raise her family. In retirement she again took it up, experimenting with water color. She was actually quite good I think. But I never realized her taste in art and books for us children highly affected my appreciation of said art. I vividly remember coming across "Mistress Masham's repose" with the Eichenberg illustrations as a child and loving not just for the story but also the pictures..Mistress Masham was a favorite much reread book for years. Not so much a favorite were two large books, identical in format, of "Jane Eyre" and "Wuthering Heights" with the Eichenberg illustrations. It never occurred to me that all these books were illustrated by the same artist. Thank you so much for your series which has made more obvious to me the gift my mother gave us in both books and art.

Wonderful, Pete. Eichenberg has always been a favorite. Of course, I know him mostly for his block illustrations, so it was a treat to see some of his other techniques. As a book illustrator myself, I especially appreciated your comments on how he captured the essence of the writer's words, the unwritten "soul" of the story he was illustrating, adding to the reader's experience, the most important job of an illustrator. Great video. And welcome back! At the risk of assuming I can speak for other subscribers to your channel, we missed your weekly foray into the wonderful world of illustration. Hope you had a good rest. Cheers!

Hello again Doug. Good to hear from you. I must confess that although I'm wildly impressed (who wouldn't be?) with the engravings they do get a bit relentlessly doomladen for me. It's the frivolous pen and inks - and particularly Miss Masham - that really appeal, and fill me with seething envy. The holiday was great and like life, all too brief.

Thanks again Pete for another foray into illustration. So much work and skill that seems to go unoticed in a world of instant imagery. For those who've never found themselves, poised over a blank piece of paper, with a pencil in their hand. . .

    • @petebeard

Hello and many thanks for your comment. And it's hard to look at skill and imagination such as this and not feel a certain despair at the current state of things. Or maybe - in my case at least - it's just the perennial grumble of the aged. More positively I recently discovered a number of contemporary illustrators who seem to be keeping the flame lit and they will feature in future videos, I hope.

    • @negotiableaffections

So many people seem to think that art is trivial and never realise the actual truth of its purpose. I'm just now watching 'Blind Dweller's' TH-cam about Kathe Kollwitz. There must be a million ways to express the heart, but the immediacy and hard hitting nature of her [quite basic] print making techniques has that base purity that carries such tough material to the core of one's soul. Here's to hope, Pete. Cheers

A wonderful overview of the great artist, Fritz Eichenberg. Thank-you. The Catholic Worker still reprints his work along with many other artists inspired by his techniques as well as faith. I missed seeing his large scale, for him, wood engravings of Dylan Thomas’ A Child’s Christmas in Wales. The publisher, New Directions, offered the actual prints in a signed edition of 100 numbered copies, of which my wife and I purchased copy 98 for ourselves when we married in 1975.

Another great one Pete. The work he did that you called wood engraving looks a lot like scratch board. For those unfamiliar scratch board is like white cardstock with a shinny black surface and you create images by scratching away the black revealing the white beneath, using an exacto knife. I use the knife the same way you use pen and ink with cross-hatching and line width, but you have to wrap your head around drawing a negative in a way because the shadow is already there and you have to draw the light. The results are quite good because of the high contrast, but erasing is impossible. Fritz has obviously mastered this technique, which is always distinguishable from his other work because of the nature of the medium. I haven't done any research so this medium could be the same. Thank you so much.

Hello again and yes I suppose that scratchboard and white line engraving are similar. Certainly both of them make me slackjawed with admiration as techniques, and as you say you need to invert conventional drawing wisdom. It was all I could do to manage a paint brush.

Thank you for making a video of this, until now unknown to me, artist. Prolific indeed. He seemed to have a great sense of when black and white would be more impactful to the narrative (though I suspect that color printing being more expensive had some impact in the decision). Particularly impactful to me was the print of the holocaust camp with the names of each one.

Another supremely talented master of many styles, all the more noteworthy and important in this era of style-constraint to the point of self-caricature a la Kincaid and Roger Dean. I remember well the illustrations from Black Beauty (a book that also taught me about propaganda) and the Jungle Book!

I agree that *Eichenberg's* emotions shine through his work & his color art is beautiful. Also, perspective is so difficult (for me anyway) & his use of it is wonderful; I've found it difficult to get a grip on but, still trying ...😊🤔His alphabet book was adorable & I bet children loved learning w/ that & he made the letters rhyme ... clever

Hi and thanks a lot for your appreciatuon and comment about Eichenberg. I don;t think I;ve ever encountered another illustrator who was so wide ranging in his techniques and types of work. I do find the wood engravings a bit relentlessly depressing but the children's work is as you say a real tonic.

Hello and thanks for the comment. And thanks for introducing me to the work of Lucy Kemp-Welch, who I had never previously encountered. A quick google indicates she was much more the artist than illustrator and probably not a suitable candidate for the series, but I'll take a closer look and see what I can find. Either way thanks for the knowledge.

My family had a copy of his collected illustrated Shakespeare. I first read Hamlet and the Tempest in that book. At the church where I go for social services there is a reproduction on the wall of a woodcut of Christ standing in line at a soup kitchen. The church is Methodist but like many churches around here it has Quaker links. Thank you.

I remember "The Jungle Book" and, later "Jane Eyre" (purchased secondhand with a precious bit of Birthday Money--I didn't have enough to get his Wuthering Heights as well, though I later acquired it). He must have still been very active then, but because of the intricate style I assumed he was an artist of the more distant past.
