    @14:24 the video discusses aiming the device until "it goes to zero." Can you clarify what "zero" the gentleman was referring to and also how to "point" the device to the satellite (what part points to the satellite and at what angle). I see the reported azimuth so I'm assuming that that's the direction I should point it. Thanks for the great video.

    Can you still use the SOS feature if your phone has run out of power? Are the triage questions optional?

    • @ukgpstraining
      @ukgpstraining  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can on the device as a standalone, if your mobile is out of power you will have the option to raise an SOS but will not be able to pass through the triage questions. As above they will look to send the most appropriate response to you regardless of whether the questions are completed. You do not have to answer the questions but it certainly helps.

    I installed the app to try it before ordering the device. What immediately put me off was that it required contacts access in order to provide basic functionality. For many of my contacts I have home addresses, birthdays, multiple phone numbers, emails. I still consider this sensitive information even in 2023. There is no reason to not allow manual entry of numbers I want to text except data mining. It would take a software developer extra 10 min to make a screen pop up for one to enter a number. Is there a way to bypass the contacts access?

    • @MikeTrieu
      @MikeTrieu 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you're on Android, you can just run the app from a separate phone profile and populate the local address book with only the data you want. Not sure if iOS has a similar feature.

    • @ukgpstraining
      @ukgpstraining  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes it works in forested areas. Clear view of the sky is similar to any other GPS product i.e. it does not work indoors.
      But one other thing with the Motorola is as the satellite is South in the sky and fixed (unlike other two-way satellite communicators) if you are on a rock face etc where you can not see South it will not work.
      Other than that we have used it extensively for our event management and it works brilliantly.

      We look at that subject at this point in the video - th-cam.com/video/aC4WMV3v7pU/w-d-xo.html, as the unit is 'always on' it sends and receives messages very quickly.
      We have been using it for 1 week now and we are taken back on how quickly it is sending messages, we are able to send/ receive via the satellites from a warehouse with just a few skylights to see the sky through.

    Admittedly I am not a techie. I use no social media, and I avoid phones. For years I used an iPod for my communications while traveling, which mostly would be checking email and occasionally finding something online, plus taking photos. Someone 'disappeared' my iPod back in March. Got a cheap Moto G smart phone to use as an ersatz iPod. Have been wanting a personal locator beacon for some time and saw the Defy last month. Now that it has arrived, I am not sure what to do with it. Since I have VOIP on my Moto G, will that work instead of a real phone for set-up? As to the Defy itself, I have no interest in sending messages to others while I am out on the trail. Got this device solely to send out an SOS if something untoward happens. Which means I plan on keeping the device powered off. Does the SOS button work only if the device is powered on, or is there something that bypasses the power button if the SOS button is held for the 5 seconds (or longer)? Do I or do I not need to download the Defy satellite link app onto the Moto G if I am using the Defy solely for SOS purposes? As to satellite connection, your stroll on treeless rolling hills is lovely, but I hike in national forests where I will be going through mostly tall pines. I take it the device will not send out an SOS if I am under such trees or hanging from a cliff-face. Is that correct? What about if I have the device inside a pocket of my backpack--does a piece of nylon cloth keep it from finding the satellite? Airports: Is the Defy allowed onboard the plane? Must it be turned off while onboard? Must the Defy go into a separate basket when going through Security? Thanks for answering my 8 questions.

As to the Defy itself, I have no interest in sending messages to others while I am out on the trail. Got this device solely to send out an SOS if something untoward happens.
      Q1. Does the SOS button work only if the device is powered on, or is there something that bypasses the power button if the SOS button is held for the 5 seconds (or longer)?
      A1. Yes, the dice needs to be switched if you are wanting to activate a SOS by pressing the button.
      Q2. Do I or do I not need to download the Defy satellite link app onto the Moto G if I am using the Defy solely for SOS purposes?
      A2. Yes, you need to install the app on your phone to set up the Motorola Defy - Satellite link
      Q3. As to satellite connection, your stroll on treeless rolling hills is lovely, but I hike in national forests where I will be going through mostly tall pines. I take it the device will not send out an SOS if I am under such trees or hanging from a cliff-face. Is that correct?
      A3. We have been using it from inside a building with a very small window in the roof. Good advice when pressing the SOS is in the UK it currently needs to be pointing South. The app will tell you where the satellite is in the sky, once you know this if you point it in that direction (even with a poor view of the sky) it will work. Once you get going with it you will soon start to ‘read’ the situation better.
      Q4. What about if I have the device inside a pocket of my backpack--does a piece of nylon cloth keep it from finding the satellite?
      Q4. No it does not, but as it is so compact and weatherproof, why not mount it on your rucksack strap. Try and help the dice rather than working against it.
      Q5. Airports: Is the Defy allowed onboard the plane?
      A5. Yes, as long as it is not switched on. BUT it can not be transported to and used in a number of countries.
      The list below provides our best understanding of countries that may regulate or prohibit the use of a satellite communicator or are on a list of U.S. embargoed countries:
      Afghanistan
      Crimea region of the Ukraine
      Cuba
      Georgia (SMS)
      India
      Iran
      North Korea
      Myanmar
      Sudan
      Syria
      Thailand
      Vietnam
      China
      Q6. Must it be turned off while onboard?
      A6. Yes, it must be switched off
      Q7. Must the Defy go into a separate basket when going through Security?
      A7. I suspect not, but personally I would ask airport security if you are unsure.
      I hope this helps.
