    It thinking the satellite it uses is always to the south from the Uk and around 30degrees elevation. So if you're on a northerly aspect with the skyline more than 30degrees it likely not getting a signal. I didn't realise it used geostationary satellites when i bought it. Thanks for all the info I've gleaned from your channel.

    Thanks for the video. 👍 Think it's a great little device and enjoying using it.
    Couple of things they are a bit vague on is when tracking will become available and how you can purchase more messages when you've used up your monthly allowance. That last point feels like a limiting factor for the moment. Having to keep an eye on it.

    • @ukgpstraining
      @ukgpstraining  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Live tracking is coming next month (this will be a bolt on) and in that update they are releasing the prices for purchasing further messages.
      Not long to wait and as soon as we know we will let you all know.
      I hope this helps.

      My device ordered yesterday and arrived this morning. Just left it to charge. I tend to do walks in fairly remote areas in the Scottish Highlands and I'm no spring chicken 🐣 anymore. Safety is always high up on my list for walking. This seems to cover it using one of my (younger) neighbours for my contact. I've been thinking (yep, it's a new thing for me) about where to attach the device. If it's on my camera bag it's quite possible I'm a distance away from my bag while using my camera, so should I slip / fall (never we all say) then I'd possibly NOT be near enough to use it to get assistance? so I think I'll hang it perhaps from my belt ~ food for thought. As usual excellent review (as always).... thank you

    Great to know that the SOS needs to be held down for 5 seconds in order to action. I was worried about knocking mine whilst using it this week in the Lake District. That does give me some piece of mind for future use.

    Thanks for the review. I’m in the process of deciding which satellite messenger to buy and the cost of this unit is very attractive especially once they add on bundles for tracking and additional messages. I noticed that the location on the messages is in degrees, it would be useful if it was in OSGB and more useful for navigation purposes if the grid reference was shown on the satellite status page on the app. If you are having regular reviews with Bullitt could you ask them if they could provide this please.

    I've received the device the past week. Right now the website is not working correctly for links to terms and conditions of the plans when activating them. The plans are advertised with a number of messages but there is a number of bytes, so messages are probably less if they are long. Yesterday I've tried it walking below the trees with a mountain in front of me at south and it worked perfectly, pratically always online. Even going back it worked pretty well but because I was walking north sometimes the signal was lost and every time the signal was locked again the device vibrated. After twenty times this happened it became annoying. I hope they'll add a setting to disable this behaviour...

      @@ukgpstraining another issue that I've already submitted to their support is that SOS informations such as birth date and additional informations that you want to provide that maybe are medically relevant are not saved on the website and from the app there's no way to add them. If you need screenshots or more in depth informations just let me know.

    Nice reviews guys, seriously tempted at that price, really curious how badly the signal might get blocked on the North side of mountains though, that might be the only thing that stops me. If something happens to me on my own I was to be confident that I can get a message out. So how can other people tell where you are? Does it depend on you sending a message? Can the recipient click the coordinates in that message to get a map of where you are?

    • @ukgpstraining
      @ukgpstraining  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for your comment. When you location is shared the recipient receives a link they can just click on.
      Maybe we do need to do another video regarding the signal being blocked, watch this space ...

      The satellite is almost like a mobile mast located in the Congo which is 22000 miles tall, which for me in Scotland put it about 25degrees up and 163degrees south.

      Cheers@@mountainair365 I'm in Northern Ireland so I'm guessing I would probably suffer the same problem. Shame though, the price is great, maybe it will force a bit of competition with the likes of SPOT and Garmin.

    All set up and working to any phone that can receive a text. However to respond to the sat message,,, text must be received by a phone that is set up with Bullitt app. Do they set up a separate account that is not linked to my (or any) Defy device?

    Is there any information about how reliable the satellite system is? Not much documentation or testing of this one. Keen to understand how the fixed satellite setup works in deep ravines/mountain valleys and the like. What if the view to the south is completely blocked by a tall mountain?

      All these devices use the higher, line-of-sight-only frequencies. The difference is that the InReach and Zoleo use low-earth-orbit satellites by Iridium. I followed their paths for a few days. Typically, one is always within sight if you're on higher or level ground. One will pass a little above the horizon to the east or west. Then one will pass almost directly overhead and a third will pass on the other side. That means that if you're in a deep ravine, your message will still get out. You just many need to wait 20-30 minutes for that overhead pass.
      On the other hand, this Defy uses a satellite that remains in a fixed position over the equator, so it is always in one place somewhere between SE/S/SW. If that is blocked, you will need to find a new location. If you're badly injured, you're out of luck, although if someone is with you, they can find a location where it will work. That isn't all bad though. If the Defy satellite is visible, it will stay visible. There's no waiting for a Iridium satellite to pass within sight.
      There are two more factors. (1) Since the Defy satellite is poised over the equator, the further north you go, the lower in the sky it will appear. You'll probably lose connections more in Scotland than in Spain. And in polar regions, forget it. (2) From what I have seen of coverage, the Defy satellites are using directional antennas aimed at certain regions of the earth such as the U.S. or Europe. If you're inside those regions, all is fine. If you're not, you're unlikely to have coverage even if the satellite is technically above the horizon. That doesn't mean you shouldn't get a Defy. Just keep in mind that its coverage is not and probably never will be as extensive as that of the InReach or Zoleo.
      As this video points out, the big plus for the Defy are its much lower prices. Hopefully, competition will drive down the price of the others.

    What do you know about Bullitt going bankrupt? Without Bullitt or another company to run the service, the Defy is useless. I bought one before the bankruptcy news got out and it did still work on February 3, 2024 but, who knows for how long. Its a shame if it goes under. I'm surprised to see the device still for sale seeing how uncertain the future for Defy is.

      We discussed the Bullitt situation at length in this months PodCast - gpsonlinecourse.co.uk/gps-training-podcast-number-93/
      Since then I have spoken to them and I am sadly not in a position to announce anything but I am very positive about the future of this device, existing contracts and a way forward.
      As you will hear in the podcast, at the start of February they stated they will email everybody would receive an email if they needed to be updated about anything, and 20 days later nobody has received anything, which has to be a good sign.
      I hope this helps.

      An interesting summary, I am not going to sit here and say it is perfect (and I would say that about any two-way satellite communicator or GPS unit), but we have sold just under 150 and as we support all our customers we have had 2 or 3 issues relating to bugs etc.
      Glad to say though after a quick phone call to our guy at bullitt they have all been sorted out in 10 mins.
      Better than any other GPS manufacturer, believe me. as they are a smaller business with a new product it is literally advancing on a week by week basis.

    The phone s/w is way too Apple centric, the android version only supports the latest os, which means one has to have spent an additional $2k+ to use the device. No other satcom device ive looked at is so restrictive. Pass.

      @@ukgpstrainingso, $2k+ in order to use this device. Goody. Like I said, every other device including the newest out there like zoleo supports android going back 10+ years. And this does iphone back that far as well. Apple centric. Bad programmers. Too bad. But they and others need to stop promoting it as working with 'any' apple or android device, or they may run into legal problems.
