Becky, scrape the vanilla beans into your vanilla, dehydrate the beans then cut into 2" lengths, add about 4 pieces of vanilla bean to about a cup of sugar. You can also make lavender sugar with dehydrated lavender flowers, lemon sugar with lemon peels etc..

That's exactly how we have been making our sugar for years too! Doing it that way really makes a potent vanilla sugar. I never have liquid vanilla in the house now i spend the money on those amazing vanilla beans, and use the sugar for baking like Becky did in this video! Fabulous! Lemon sugar I think is my favorite! Makes amazing lemonade!

I was confused at first when you presented the idea of the vanilla sugar as a new thing - here in Germany it is an absolute staple, you can buy vanilla sugar in little packets and a lot of people make it themselves by sticking vanilla beans in sugar as it's much cheaper in the long run than the packets. I didn't know that that doesn't seem to be a thing in the US! I'm glad you discovered the magic of the vanilla sugar though - and indeed, as some others pointed out, other flavoured sugars can be so good too! my favourites are cardamom sugar and orange peel sugar for Christmas baking!
Thanks for sharing your kitchen adventures with us, Becky!

Yes, during my time as a university student in Austria I learned about vanilla sugar. As per the way they do it, I just throw a couple of vanilla beans in the container of powdered sugar (I don't open them up). Sometimes I make a smaller container of vanilla sugar from my Baker's sugar as well. I try to keep these on hand always, but I ALSO use my bottle of vanilla as well (I love vanilla!) My Austrian recipe books always call for vanilla sugar and often liquid vanilla as well.

Hi Becky! Just remember the roots on your comfrey will grow down 10 feet into the soil. Wherever you plant it you will have it for life, so make sure when you plant it this will be a permanent spot as you will never get rid of it! Even if you dig it up down as far as 10 feet 2 years later, you will probably see it coming back.!

Vanilla sugar is a very common ingredient here in Germany and can be found in many/most sweet baking/dessert recipes. It's available in every supermarket, but I grew up with my mum always making her own. She did exactly what you did, taking the the leftover rinds of a vanilla bean after its contents had been scraped out (still plenty of flavor/aroma in the rind) and storing it in a container of granulated sugar. Opening that container and smelling the vanilla was always my favorite part of baking.

I made these bars immediately. I had strawberry lemonade jam. I got it in Wyoming last year. So delicious! You can take the dry bean pods from the vanilla sugar once you're done with them and grind them into vanilla powder. You can use it for flavoring all kinds of baked goods! You get extract, sugar , AND powder 😊

We decided to adopt "flexible and adaptable" as our '23 mantra; and thank goodness we did! Im to the point that im starting to have 2 or 3 plans based upon the weather and life's curve balls; again this is working better for us than "a set of plans".

I recently inherited the property my mother grew up on. My mom and dad lived there when they were first married but moved with the Army to Kansas in 1960. After training my dad and our family were relocated to Ft. Sill. So, no one has lived on mom's land since 1960. It is horribly overgrown and the homestead is down to stones. However, though most of the fruit trees are gone we found flowers that my mother planted years ago still near the homestead. Daffodils. And amazingly we found rhubarb growing along the area where it was planted over 50 years ago. Cutting some of it to make a rhubarb pie was pure joy.

Verrry good fertilizer if u mix with stinging nettle and add water just down side its bit smelly but apparently best fertilizer ever. If u dont want the smell put leaves in container with hole at bottom and place weight on top of leaves to press out juices. Remember to put catch up container under the hole to catch the juices❤

Hi Becky, I have a recommendation for you, since you say you are a new, learning, gardener. I am obsessed with the TH-cam channel "Hollis and Nancy's Homestead". He does gardening videos (interspersed with her cooking videos) differently than anyone I have seen. He takes between 6 months and a year for each video. All in the same video, you see him start the seeds, harden them off, watch the plants grow, and even through harvest and cooking the harvest. I have learned so much from each video...all the things that go right, and go wrong (and what to do about it). She is Korean and he is a good 'ole boy, so they make a lot of jokes about her "Korean/Red Neck Fusion Cooking". LOL He has health problems, so she cooks very healthy meals that look delicious and include a lot of things that my momma never made (they rave about Chinese String Eggplant...I am SO going to plant that and cook it just like her video!) And she has your same problem with spices (she likes it hot...him not so much). Anyway, they have a huge garden (almost a farm) in Florida that I'm very envious of. And again, I have learned so much from these experienced old-timers. (Who knew that you have to clean baby chickens butts...Yuck...because they get clogged and the chicks can die?) Anyway I hope you enjoy watching them....I can't stop.

Heya Becky! Just another idea for your dried vanilla beans; grind into a powder and stir into glucose syrup and you’ll have another version of vanilla that bakers make in order to not waste beans. This way you don’t have to scrape out the pods either. Another use for the vanilla sugar is any type of custard. (Crème brûlée, crème angles etc.) In the bakery we always use vanilla bean sugar for these type of recipes as well as adding a whole fresh bean which would then be washed after use, air dried and then added to the vanilla sugar bucket. 👍 You’re on the right track kiddo, waste not want not with those expensive suckers!

Hi Becky,,, I grow the sunflower sprouts several times a year. My cat loves them too. I find that I like them growing in soil better, they just look healthier. Also if you soak the seeds for a day or two
they will sprout faster. Have fun . love your channel.

You should try cooking your cubed potatoes in the instant pot with water, top with a rack, crack open 4 eggs in Metal bowl, don’t stir, and put the pan on the rack, pressure cook 4 minutes. Cool after quick release. Turn over eggs onto plate and dice. They are ready to add to cooled potatoes. Add your dressing. Eggs cook like hard boiled eggs, only in a loaf.

You can also chop the leaves soak them in water for a few days then water your plants as well as its medicinal qualities for things like bruise salves.

I take my used vanilla beans scrap out the seeds and slow dry those in my oven for a few hours (no air flow so they don't blow around. Then I take the beans and dehydrate around 90 to 100. When done I blend them to a powder and put about 1 to 1 1/2 tsp per 2 cups of sugar. You can do more if you like - adjust to your taste. Yes it's amazing in snickerdooles and even a vanilla cake. And man it really kicks up a chocolate cake

You're going to love having vanilla sugar in your pantry. It elevates everything it's used in, including hot tea, hot chocolate, baked goods, even savory dishes. Don't worry about eliminating any vanilla extract a recipe calls for when using the vanilla sugar. You can use them both together; it just translates into multiple delicious layers of flavor. I always have at least one jar going and the vanilla beans in this current batch are at least five years old. Their fragrance and flavor are still quite potent and impart a lovely vanilla sweetness to everything I add it to. Your shortbread looked delicious! ` Lisa

Becky, COMFREY…. I grew one last year (ordered 3 more from Azure earlier this year). I plan to use as well. BUT, last year I made a comfrey salve (olive oil and bees wax) for a topical pain reliever/healer. WOW does it work great. It’s why I ordered 3 more plants last month. I have a big garden and work my tail off in it. This memorial weekend I finally blessed my with drip irrigation (self installed). I also have a bone disease and have broken / replaced many bones / joints. The pain is real. The comfrey salve does wonders! Comparable to $1k RX lidocaine patches. Actually, better.

Becky - wooden utensils and knives should not be put in the dishwasher😯. Hot water and the heat from the drying cycle will dry out the wooden utensil and cause it to crack. The high temperature and moisture of the dishwasher can damage both the knife blade and the handle. The dishwasher soap is also harmful.
