Marisa is a similarly good beginning character like Reimu but tends to lean towards speed and projectiles while lacking the melee consistency that Reimu has. Her special ability also helps promote this. Every fourth projectile attack you use gets supercharged.

3:55 actually.. Kanako kinda told her not to partake in this. The cable car they wanted to install to the Moriya Shrine was a priority so Sanae had to miss out on both Hopeless Masquerade and Double Dealing Character, as she complains in one of Wild and Horned Hermit's chapters (I think it's 19 or 20)
Oh and that shoebill on the far right of Koishi's stage scared the crap out of me when I played Puppet Dance Performance.
Notice the bottom right corner of Koishi's stage... Satori has a goddamn KOMODO DRAGON as one of her pets...
Imagine if that komodo turns into its human form, probably spitting at other's face to kill them.

Can someone explain to me why so many characters in the cutscene portraits have the most freaky bushy eyelashes the world has ever seen? It seriously looks like they're supposed to be eyebrows.
I believe they’re supposed to be eyelashes, though I agree they’re very bushy at times
I coulda sworn Nitori couldn't fly on her own. She's a Kappa which aren't known for that sort of ability. Unless a Printwork pointed out that she can fly I don't remember her having flight abilities.

Or is there really no explanation beyond the implied "we're doing a fighting game with, Reimu and Marisa aside, nothing but new characters" answer?
In one of the print works latter it was explained.
Basically Kanako saw through what was going on with this and learned quickly that sending Sanae out to take part in these fights would be a waste of time, since any faith gathered wouldn't stick around and would disappeate.
So, they had more important things to do and construction of the Moriya Ropeway continued to be worked on instead

Oh they can be used in the Story Mode, just not against this spell in particular. Since Kokoro never moves or anything, any Last Word that involves moving her around will just wiff
@@MegamanOmega184 Well I haven't seen any character beyond Kokoro who would last long enough to max the popularity meter. So technically, only the likes of Nitori with her ripoff of Snake's Final Smash and Ichirin with her biggest Jotaro impression seem to even have a shot at a Last Word in Story Mode.
