    Q : In a specially designed vernier calipers , 10 divisions of the vernier scale are equal to 4divisions of the main scale. In the following figure, the zero error and a measurement are shown . In the zero error, the 5th and the 10th divisions of the vernier coincides with 1 mm and 3 mm mark on the main scale respectively and in the measurement , the 2nd and 7th divisions of the vernier scale coincide with the 23 mm and 25 mm mark on the main scale respecetively as shown in the figure . Report the length measured with due regards to the error.

      Hello Janardhan sir .
      I feel there is a mistake in analysis here , correct me if i am wrong . Calculation of e ( zero error) and l are by two seperate observation and both can have an error of +- 0.2mm , where as this has not been taken into account while calculating e . If the manufacturer of instrument provide value of e then we can directly use it , however here it is calculated from observation sir .By the way I am a big fan of your content sir .

    I am a JEE Aspirant I thought for 30 mins that why the formula i learned (LC = 1MSD - 1VSD) and used multiple times didn't work for this even though it was derived through the same method of conservation of length on both scales..I came to a conclusion that in that derivation we had only one VSD between the 0th MSD and 1st MSD while in this question we had 2 VSD between 0th MSD and 1st MSD so eventually we had to subtract 2VSD from 1MSD to get least count ... And got to the foemula that for any Vernier scale, L.C. = 1MSD - (n)VSD (; where n is the number of VSD between 0th MSD and 1st MSD ) or For simplicity we can simply keep on subtracting VSD from 1MSD until the value becomes less than or equal to VSD and that value is our L.C... Please correct me if any of my conclusions have mistakes..

    Hey sir..great video..I have an diff insight for least cnt...plz tell if u liked it..in above case..the actual zero of Vernier scale..is 2mm behind the 1mm mark..of main scale..so starting from that zero..I will calculate the position of VSD coinciding with 0 of mains scale..let position be n..so n*2/5 =1mm..as main scale 0 divide two half abt the coinciding divisn..no I get n=2.5..but I knw n=2 is possible and so the 0.5VSD is least extra length needed to shift the 2 divisn of VS to voincide with 0 of mains scale .wgich is hence 0.2mm..

    • @PHYSICSSIRJEE

      Reduced mass is not a universal Concept. It's only applicable as a mathematical tool in reducing our Calculations in certain special cases only . Eg: 1) Energy Calculations in two body collisions 2) Modified Bohr model where nucleus mass is comparable 3) time period Calculation in case of two blocks connected by a spring
      Don't worry too much about it by thinking it's a very heavy Concept. Practice above three cases for now. I will plan for a video in coming days 🙂

    As you said that it is the least distance to be slid by the vernier scale for a MSD to coincide with VSD . It might be possible that on moving the vernier scale towards the left the least distance is getting obtained.
    Example: 3MSD=5VSD, Here least count will be (1MSD-1VSD=0.4mm) or (2VSD-1MSD= 0.2mm).

      You may check that the least count and vernier constant are equal only for n MSD = (n+1) VSD style vernier👍🙂

    Sir let's think that we have a defective vernier callipers (standard one ) with -ve zero error of 10^-6 then can we say least count is 10^-6 ? If d definition given in video ie minimum distance that should moved by so as to get a coincidence then I this 10^-6 is fine,I think and also lc depends on zero error.

    • @arunayarramreddy4235
      @arunayarramreddy4235 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Or is it necessary to take both zeros coincide when we were to count lc?

    • @PHYSICSSIRJEE
      @PHYSICSSIRJEE  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@arunayarramreddy4235 we have to start from both zeroes coincidence👍. Error is also a measurement, so it will be in multiples of LC . So , in the case you mentioned , 10^-6 seems to be too small to be measurable by standards of VERNIER CALIPERS. Unless you tell me MSD vs VSD relationship

    My gut feeling says least count is always
    Min{|1MSD - K VSD|} where k is an integer

    Sir what if 8 MSD= 9 VSD...then for least count calculation...shall we need to draw the whole MS and VS till 9th VSD to check where the least separation is being obtained?
    As here it was easy to observe the least separation as it was 2 MSD= 5 VSD

    • @PHYSICSSIRJEE
      @PHYSICSSIRJEE  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@anujha7310 I couldn't understand the wording of your question but I will try to explain 🙂....
      at 7:05 when we calculated error e, we were told in question that the divisions exactly matched (left of the screen) ... So we assumed the calculation of e is perfect from that information. Remember e is called a systematic error.
      Now, in any Measurement related to Vernier ( e on left or actual reading on right ) , there will always be a random error which should be reported with a +- (plus or minus) sign separately at the end. That's not to be included in the calculation of e. I hope you understood

      Thank you , I was thinking that e has also been calculated and there will be error in it too , However if according to question it exactly matches and there won’t be any error in it , I am fine .
      Thanks a lot sir
      Sir one more thing , I had asked a question for jee 2016 rotation problem too , if you can check once I will gain confidence in my understanding .

    14.30......1MSD -1VSD would be 0.6 mm and not 0.1 mm.....speak carefully sir 😂.........least count is the minimum difference between a measured value and a multiple of vernier count........vernier count is taken equal to least count only if that minimum difference is zero....

      @PHYSICSSIRJEE  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the smiley , and the advice given. I will consider it for future videos. Btw , for this video LC is 0.2 mm as mentioned at 14:30. Least count derived there is correct.Least count is the least measurable length . It’s not 1 msd - 1 vsd always.
