This is by far the best review I’ve seen for this game so far. The ones from IGN and other such reviewer‘s seem to completely overlook any and all issues with the game, but this one actually highlights both the good and the bad and says that there’s value in the game either way even if it’s not the greatest game ever or the worst game ever. Thank you for the great review, I think you’ll be one of my more trusted sources from here on out!

@Dale Gribble I am talking about this specific review of Pokemon Sword and Shield, not this Channel's reviews of any other game, so I dont know what that has to do with anything. That being said I also give Breath of the wild at least a 9.something out of 10
People have discovered that a lot of this game seems to have been the exact same kinda structure as the 3DS games Ultra Sun and Moon and as such the current theory is this game was supposed to be on 3DS originally and was quickly ported to Switch.

Gr1mADHD ...well have you played or seen Xenoblade 2? When you run in Gormott you can literally see a circle of grass around the character popping in and out of existence, same with the monsters there. Or when you port yourself to another location the textures are always non-existent and sometimes you stand for a few seconds in the void before the ground loads. In BotW the loading issues aren't there but everything else mentioned above is also present. When you glide from a tower you can see the world forming around you and enemy's also pop up. Walk on Hyrule plains and you can see the guardians spawn inn and so on. The problem aren't the games but the switch. I love BotW, Xenoblade and Pokemon will also be great but these pop inns are just a switch problem in general. I have over 600h in both BotW and Xenoblade 2 and I can assure you it really isn't that bad. You don't care for it after a few hours.
GameXplain is the only one who reviewed it correctly. It felt genuine and not like they’re being overly positive with the game to appeal to Pokemon. They gave the good and the bad about the game. That’s what a review is meant to be

All games have room for improvement man. I'm not saying these games don't have flaws that need to be fixed, but expecting every game to be the best one yet and utterly flawless is just too much.
Yeah I find it pretty funny to watch/read reviews about this game because quite a few are really honnest and list the problems and shortcomings of the games and then end with 8/10 or 9/10 ... okay, so how did you go from "Its a good start. There's room for improvement." to one of the best grade possible ?
Tbh I don’t think the wild area was a “brave stride forward.” Everyone’s been asking for an open world Pokémon since before the beginning of time and when BotW dropped, it only showed everyone that it could definitely work. SwSh just doesn’t have any notable area where it really excels, whether that’s graphics, battle mechanics, Pokémon themselves, story anymore even etc. when so many previous games have already done it better. I find it easy to like, but it’s a hard game to be proud of.
Personally I think trainer and pokemon design is great, and I think trainer customization is at an all time dramatic high, and competitive obstacles have been axed for the better. But yeah outside of that damn there are a lot of shortcomings.
@@laurafrakinroslin I think main series can be done well open if there are elements of exploration and scaling based on story milestones and a metroidvania-esque reward for visiting old locations. But I'd really love an open world game as an action rpg. Maybe a dex no bigger than 200, but the action elements can make them and their moves feel really fresh.
How would you know that? You haven't even played it. You literally watched other people rerun the same 20 second clips and you already made up in your mind that isn't notable.
Honestly, I'm not too surprised, there was about 13 minutes of positive or neutral criticism during the video, and the negatives weren't game breaking. Yes, the lack of national pokemon sucks, but as he said, the new ones are also pretty well developed and I'd much rather see something new too.
I feel like the big problem right now is that the biggest issues plaguing this game are not a result of the game but of the company. As of right now, those of us who have not been granted a review copy can only speculate on rumors, datamines and leaks, all of which may very well be 4th or 5th person retellings, but my gosh does it look like there's been some serious mismanagement at best and malicious dishonesty at worst. You can't really translate "The game is good, but the trends that are being started here with the company may be worrisome enough to consider where your dollar goes" into a numerical review score. It's even harder to balance that when the biggest sins of the game seem to be "I mean, it's good, by why isn't it as good as these other Switch games?" (and I am fully of the argument that The Pokemon Company makes enough money that it /should/ be BotW level, if not better) Ultimately it feels like this game needed more time, and since the game has been so decisive that from where I stand I can't tell where it will fall. I'll be personally waiting till after the holiday season to pick up the game, assuming the overall opinion is positive. There are other games that are on the switch that have very obvious levels of love put into them that I can pick up this Christmas.
Here’s my take on not being able to catch high level Pokémon. There was already a solution for this that existed, it’s called your Pokémon not following your orders. I’m sure everyone remembers as a kid trading your lv100 Rayquaza to a new file. You didn’t have to worry about destroying everything because trying to reliably use it was frustrating as hell, thus discouraging you from playing that way. This is a feature that at least allows choice in your play style while not completely trivialising the game whereas this new system feels like an inorganic road block. It’s one of the many things I’ve seen that disappoints me about this game.
It's normal for open world Games, pokemon is moving toward open world so they have to add this in, its a normal feature in every open world game, you can't go up to a lvl 30 and level 10 and win, you'll get slaughtered, there's no difference here, not sure why people think this is a problem "I can't catch a lvl 50 pokemon at the start of the game wahh wahh"... Yeah that makes sense
Edward Woodward It just seems weird with how the mechanics of Pokémon work. There had never been any indication that you could not at least attempt to catch higher level Pokémon. Not allowing this just feels weird especially since there already exists a counter in continuity in the form of Pokémon not listening to you, if they are to high level.
on previous gen it only works for trade pokemons but for catch pokemons they always follows your order even they are high level. I think the not catching high level monster is understandle. it will make the game alot more easier.
Edward Woodward you know there is a better way to do that without a message popping up saying “you are not high level enough to catch this Pokemon” right? Like scale the catch rate with the difference in levels since you could get destroyed by the Pokemon if you take to long. But the point is to have a chance despite the Pokemon being too high level to use without it ignoring orders.
Jose's Planet Fair? Yes the review itself was fair but all I got throughout was mediocre, mediocre, disappointing- and then it somehow gets 8/10 GREAT. ??? That’s the weird part.
@@Vulpori most people will still enjoy playing the games, as despite their issues, they're still Pokémon games. @@Retrodaniel Pokemon cycling out TCGs cant be compared to the video game though, lol. The more apt comparison is not selling older games or saying these Pokemon can't be used in competitive play (which they do already for tiers and such.)
BlizzyAdeline The Monastery looks a lot better than anything i’m seeing here in S&S. The open area looks like it was made in MS Paint with clear lines between grads and water. But yeah, FE Character models are a bit of a mess and Pokémon is looking better on that, albeit still looks like 3DS models.
Texture wise Fire Emblem doesn’t look too great (except for the battlefields!) but my god is it so. Much. Better. At everything else. It revitalized the series in a way that still feels fire emblem, the writing has so much care put into it, and all around has much less shortcuts than SaS :/
Avoid the wild area majority of the playthrough and just stick with the main objective badges story and leveling then focus on that location and max raids they seem to be more end of game ( level training grounds ) part of the game opened to you from the start
Shiny pokemon dont appear shiny in the overworld. So the odds of you running into an overly high Pokemon that's shiny is extremely unlikely unless you go running into every high level looking Pokemon. So I doubt you're going to run into a shiny high level pokemon in the wild area before you're capable of catching it.

@@cbored3778 No I get that. I do understand that it would be difficult to be able to make unique animations for every single move especially with the copy moves. However, that would only really be a valid excuse if GameFreak had actually put in the work they claimed they did. It is looking more and more likely (and now not just by visual comparison,) that they did not actually create these models from scratch. So reusing old models should have given them time to improve other aspects but from what we've been shown they haven't even done that.
@@adriannanailo3549 In that case wouldn't the time and effort be better spent on the national dex instead of unique animations for moves? YET GAMEFREAK CAN'T EVEN GET THAT RIGHT!
The feeling I get from this game is that the switch to a new console (not to mention a home console instead of a strictly portable one) required adjustments (technical, but also conceptual), and consequently more work. But Game freaks (or maybe tpc?) wanted to use the same amount of time and resources/effort as for the past games to create this, and as a result they had to limit the amount of innovation, and cut some corners... It's a pity, because it feels like a wasted opportunity. It could have been great, instead it is mediocre. And the fact that they chose to do something predictably controversial (cut the Pokemon) but didn't really prepare any good way of dealing with the reaction, even though they must have known people would be mad, really hasn't helped them or this game...
To be fair, I get the feeling that Pokemon would have been cut at some point down the line anyway, especially when you reach the number of Pokemon the games have been getting to. Sun & Moon may have had every Pokemon available in game, but not all of them had PokeDex entries, for example.

Alex: "What's done right is done really bloody right, but what's done wrong feels like it's come frome a decade-old design document" Also Alex: *proceeds to give the game an 8/10*
@Soupmaster101 The point of a review is to talk about the things that are bad/disliked as well as those that are good/liked. A review score is typically not derived from a strict mathematical algorithm, such as "precisely 20% of the game is affected by these bad things, so I gave it an 8/10." Reviews are far more often a general scale of "I hate it, overall" to "I ABSOLUTELY love it". An 8/10 is on that scale right around "it has problems, but they're not enough to ruin the game, and overall I really like it". The bulk of the game's problems seem to be graphical, and that's an absolute shame caused by Game Freak's refusal to get help from other teams that have more experience with the Switch and console hardware. But any longtime fan of Nintendo games knows that if the gameplay is outstanding, graphical problems don't matter as much.

Cory Burmahl so my favourite video game franchise is Pokemon. Period. I currently own every game (including spin-offs) and have done countless playthroughs. There’s something the fanbase has to understand, the Switch is far more powerful than the DS. I’m around several people who work in the games industry and the fact is this, more power doesn’t always give the developers more options. And in the case of a lot of mobile-platform developers, they don’t know how to optimize or take advantage of higher-powered hardware. I think there are very legitimate criticisms of Gen 8 to be had, but it’s important to keep in mind that the team was tasked with working on a system that they probably aren’t super familiar with still

Not simply saying the game is good (and honestly I'll buy Sh and I'll play it and I'll certainly enjoy it despite its shortcomings) but also pointing the failures so that people know if they want to buy it knowing the good sides but also the bad sides
For what i've seen I will start with the bad part: This game uses the same graphics engine(it has literally the same animations on battle and the same walking animations + same flaws about cutting NPC's and trees to save FPS's) and they maybe ported the models(like on the emulators they putted a filter or something because they hacked back pokemon that they were cut on the "wild area") so devs maybe lied about that making the #Dexit a very bad excuse. Now for the good part: It brings back a lot of saving time mechanics from previous games, it looks very interesting that they used Europe on the thematics like X/Y , has according to the reviews a pretty enjoyable history like on the previous games. Gyms are like Footbal/Soccer matches on the graphics design and following to the music itself it is fantastic. The wild area looks pretty neat and the "Big Pokemans" looks like a grind festival so as an JRPG fan. Conclusions: For one part, this game looks as a budget tittle and for the Switch they could do much better and made it from scratch, for the other part, looks like a normal enjoyable Pokémon experience. Pokémon fans, don't fight each other but be critical please.
I'm playing right now, for what I've seen so far is that the "draw distance" but still apreciable. Some Pokemon npc's by moving and pressing "a" their mouths bugs. On the other side of things, Dynamax is enjoyable and the "wild area" is a good idea I dunno why they didn't do a game full "wild area" . The tutorials are skipeable and that's very good. Still, I'm only at the start of the game .
Playing with Wi-Fi makes some drops, the game engine crashed me 1 time on the "wild area" and 3 times on Route 06 and it's village. It's soo broken that fighting against Hop and the second rival made that when they talk in the middle on the fight, the camera goes away and you can't see them, really really bad. On the other side of things, the exclusive gym it's an absurdity on the max. Every single gym hypes you about the gym leader and it's personallity, this was absolutely blank. Now I just passed 7th gym, I have to say that the 5 first gyms are awesome at least the game doesn't treat you like a dumbass but still if you are a hardcore JRPG or played at least 1 game of the series, this game is easy.
I appreciate an honest review, because as much as I really don't like what I've been hearing following up to the release, which killed my hype. If the game is actually really good, it gets me hyped again, and I'd gladly play the game, even though 80% of my favourites aren't in the game.

I actually think it’s a nice thing to say. It doesn’t have anything to do with people being offended. It’s because people tend to take reviewer’s reviews as law (especially before the game’s release.) So he’s saying that your opinions matter too, not just theirs as a game review company.

@@sakuramiracles "A good start" is what you say for a first game in a series.
I love open world games but I don’t feel that main series Pokémon are a good fit for that genre.
I think even Poke park 2 does a better job...
How would you know that? You haven't even played it. You literally watched other people rerun the same 20 second clips and you already made up in your mind that isn't notable.

Tori theKlepto more like a 7 to 8 not even close to 6 from what the reviewers said
Honestly, I'm not too surprised, there was about 13 minutes of positive or neutral criticism during the video, and the negatives weren't game breaking. Yes, the lack of national pokemon sucks, but as he said, the new ones are also pretty well developed and I'd much rather see something new too.
@Matteo Leonardi As someone with the game. The bugs aren't actually as common or bad as people are leading you to believe

It's normal for open world Games, pokemon is moving toward open world so they have to add this in, its a normal feature in every open world game, you can't go up to a lvl 30 and level 10 and win, you'll get slaughtered, there's no difference here, not sure why people think this is a problem
"I can't catch a lvl 50 pokemon at the start of the game wahh wahh"...

@@adriannanailo3549
In that case wouldn't the time and effort be better spent on the national dex instead of unique animations for moves?
Nah, they had no problem porting over the models, it definitely wasn't a technical reason.
Why? I am having a feeling that the “fans” are going to pull a kyota fire on game freak
To be fair, I get the feeling that Pokemon would have been cut at some point down the line anyway, especially when you reach the number of Pokemon the games have been getting to. Sun & Moon may have had every Pokemon available in game, but not all of them had PokeDex entries, for example.
I like how none of you work at gamefreak and know what goes on in the company hhaha dipshits

Well, maybe he found that at least 80% of the game was done right in his eyes...
8/10 sounds about what I expect for Pokemon's first mainline go on the switch. Hopefully the next will be better.
@Soupmaster101 The point of a review is to talk about the things that are bad/disliked as well as those that are good/liked. A review score is typically not derived from a strict mathematical algorithm, such as "precisely 20% of the game is affected by these bad things, so I gave it an 8/10."
Reviews are far more often a general scale of "I hate it, overall" to "I ABSOLUTELY love it".
That just goes to show how right they did the stuff that was done right.

Nintendo Life critic actually pointed the game weaknesses and gave his thoughts about it (negatives but positives too). That's the real point of a critic. Not simply saying the game is good (and honestly I'll buy Sh and I'll play it and I'll certainly enjoy it despite its shortcomings) but also pointing the failures so that people know if they want to buy it knowing the good sides but also the bad sides
For what i've seen I will start with the bad part:
This game uses the same
graphics engine(it has literally the same animations on battle and the same walking animations + same flaws about cutting NPC's and trees to save FPS's) and they maybe ported the models(like on the emulators they putted a filter or something because they hacked back pokemon that they were cut on the "wild area") so devs maybe lied about that making the #Dexit a very bad
excuse.
Now for the good part:
It brings back a lot of saving time mechanics from previous games, it looks very interesting that they used Europe on the thematics like X/Y , has
according to the reviews a pretty enjoyable history like on the previous games. Gyms are like Footbal/Soccer matches on the graphics design and following to the music itself it is fantastic. The wild area looks pretty neat and the "Big Pokemans" looks like a grind festival so as an JRPG fan.
Conclusions:
For one part, this game looks as a budget tittle and for the Switch they could do much better and made it from scratch, for the other part, looks like a normal enjoyable Pokémon experience.
The problem isn't that the game is bad its just not as good as other switch games 3-4/10 at best itx s disappointment
On the other side of things, the exclusive gym it's an
absurdity on the max.

I mean, a ton of people complaining have no clue what they’re talking about... obviously some do, but most I’ve encountered want to have a PC game run on the Switch and won’t accept anything less
@@SamuraiBonesie yeah your not wrong on with that i seen so many people on twitter who have no idea what there talking about but then i get th few who do and the points they make are good
I have also seen people defending the game who have no clue what they are on about either. I think I do make some good points tho of why I am not buying this.
I downplay complaints too, but I will always support constructive criticism. The pokemon community is starting to feel like the CoD community and that is a bad thing.
@@SamuraiBonesie I haven't seen a single person asking for something we haven't already witnessed the switch to be capable of. Can you give me an example of an outlandish demand you've heard/read?
"leaks didn't help" proceeds to show Sirfetch'd
Vezix Haikal Sirfetched was was officially revealed by Pokémon, I’m pretty sure he was referring to all the other new Pokémon that were leaked and were not officially revealed.
@@LawyerN the weapon that sirfetched is holding is the vegetable "leek"
Voltricity can’t tell if I had an /s moment or if that was the original comments intention lmao
@@LawyerN lol
Geez, are people so touchy and self-conscious about their feelings that he has to have a whole disclaimer at the end that tells people that his opinions are not better than theirs?
Welcome to 20 fucking 19. Where babys cant handle other opinions or criticism.
I actually think it’s a nice thing to say. It doesn’t have anything to do with people being offended. It’s because people tend to take reviewer’s reviews as law (especially before the game’s release.) So he’s saying that your opinions matter too, not just theirs as a game review company. It encourages people to form their own opinions. Which may be important considering this game is targeted at children.
Also, imagine how touchy and easily upset that you’d have to be to write a comment complaining that someone took two seconds to say “remember these are my opinions”
It's so sad that Alex had to include the disclaimer in the end. I found nothing objectionable in the review. Is this what we've come to?
Some fans are mad with Ign because they gave them a 9/10
Kate Xie a 9/10 is way too high
@@megamask3158 it's not worth getting upset over
Mega Mask not if it’s their opinion...
@@RSanchez111 but it is worth criticizing. Don't put down legit criticism as hate or people being mad just because you don't agree with it.
GameFreak: As much as we polish this, we can't pass a 3DS Pokemon game as a Switch game.
Nintendo: Less talking, more polishing. We need this out by November.
Nintendo is against crunch
The Pokemon Company is in charge of gamefreak
As much as I dont like to defend the game, but this would never run on a 3DS. Sun and Moon already ran poorly
Nintendo has been pretty good about not succumbing to crunch, I think this is a Pokemon and Gamefreak issue
Blame TPC actually
Nintendo delays games for quality literally all the time, most recently the new metroid prime. This is all due to Gamefreak leadership
