I love The Statesmen Quartet. They always looked so classy and sharp and looked like they were enjoying what they were doing. The energy in their singing was just fantastic. My Dad was an old Pentecostal preacher and The Statesmen were one of his favorites. We grew up hearing the LP's at night when we went to bed on the HIFI and then on Sunday mornings. Great memories.
I'm from Fyffe originally and my Dad used to carry Cats mail and see him at new book singings. He knew him so well and held my Grandmother Kathleen "Kat" as a child. The best tenor who ever lived.
Thank you so much for posting this wonderful music! "Cat" Freeman was my uncle. My Mother was Vestal & Cat's baby sister. My Dad still lives in the "homeplace" in Fyffe. (We just lost my Mom this past May 2014) Uncle Cat was a wonderful singer. But an even more wonderful Uncle! He was so hilarious!
My delight to share these treasures, Our former pastor's wife Sis. Helen Pope said she used the same hair dresser as CAT at Fyffe and she often saw him there. Our Senior Group from the Northport COG made a trip to Fyffe a few years ago Sis, Pope took us to the "Homeplace" It was beautiful and we had our picture taken there. Had a wonderful time. I know you are so very proud of your family!!
Thank you for your kind comments. I'm proud of the majority of the family! 😂 just kidding!!! Uncle Cat was hilarious! And so was his Dad, my Paw Paw Freeman. Always doing something funny no matter where they were! My late husband told his family that Uncle Cat was like Red Skelton! !
Thanks Jennifer, it was delight to be able to do so. I have loved Cat since I was a kid and got to see Cat when and the Statesmen would come to my hometown of Fayette, AL. On one occasion they were traveling from city to city throughout the state promoting a candidate for governor and singing on a flatbed truck in front of the courthouse. Oh those were the days! I wanted so much to grow and be a Cat Freemen or a Jake Hess. Did not make it but I did grow up with fond memories. Thanks for your comments and viewing.
They were my favorites too especially because they were the group that I saw several times at my hometown of Fayette, AL I distinctly remember CAT being the funny guy and Hovie calling him Sister Freeman. Those are such wonderful and cherished memories.
I knew Cat Freeman. Although his name was not well remembered as Jake Hess, he was well known in gospel singing circles and had a better singing voice. We miss all those great singer especially The Statesmen and the Blackwood brother. Cat sing with both groups at different times.
You would have loved it and remembered it for a lifetime.I am so thrilled that we have the recordings and videos to remember.them by. The song they sing I KNOW HE HEARDMY PRAYER is my favorite Vep Ellis song.. Check out my video of the Gardendale Redback Hymnal Singing singing that song.

Thank you for finding these great jewels! 😘
I hope I can find more!
I bought this CD from ebay several years ago. They only sold for about 2 weeks. I would imagine they were pulled off. Great find. Love it.
This bunch was my favorite time for the Statesmen, I really liked Jake and sister Cat.

I loved the statesmen especially Jake and sister Cat.
I share your sentiments.
this is gospel music at its best along with the blackwoods
Cheif was the best bass ever
"The Savior Died on Calvary," "If God Didn't Care," "At The Roll Call" and "Who Do You Think" were worth the price of admission---Priceless!
Totally agree. I cherish the memories of the times I was able to see them live in my hometown of Fayette, AL
My fathers side of the family is from Jake Hess's neck of the woods----Haleyville.
Haleyville and all of Alabama are proud to call Jake an Alabamian!!
I wish I could have gone to one of their concerts, but they didn't make to western South Dakota back in those days.

I have a lot of their music. The greatest quartet ever.

I just want to say I love the Statesmen and I love all you post! Could I possibly get a list of songs in this video?
Sister Cat Freeman was Vestal Goodman's brother.
So true. Alabama and especially Fyffe, AL are very proud of both of them. I have visited their childhood home in Fyffe.
Now these guys could sing gospel!
You that right. None better. Thanks for viewing and commenting.
Cat was my cousin
Wally Varner was my Uncle
