When I was a little boy my Daddy would take on Saturday night over to Asheville to see the gospel quartets. When the Statesmen or the Blackwood Brothers would be there to perform it was standing room only in Pack Square. These were outdoor concerts by the BEST of gospel groups. I fell asleep on my Dad’s lap many Saturday nights listening to these people. Jake Hess, Big Chief, Rosie Roselle were so so so good at their art. I can only imagine the heavenly choir with these brethren singing out.
Wiley I think you and I would be surprised at how many people in this country would love these gospel quartets! One cant help but to feel good after watching them ! Our country could sure use them now !
Hovie & the Statesmen. WAY ahead of their time. The charisma was different then anyone b-4 them. I don't know of any today, as far as i know, that matches them.
...this video always brings a smile to my face -almost to the point of tears- 'cause these guys were truely hittin' it here! I love the wonderful busting-of-chops banter at the start by Old Hovie. And, dang, wasn't the Chief a smooth character...
...what a gift to be able to open your mouth & belt out music like this! Man, Rosie is hitting on all 8 cylinders here...! "I hope this blows the tube out at your house..." Can any musicians out there tell me the four chords played in the turn-around about 1:47 & 2:08??
+HeinekenPete : lol! Most of the great music went out of style about the same time that tubes went out of style. .......We do not have tubes anymore, nor anything good to blow them out! lol!
Outstanding ! Thanks and keep them coming. About 3 months ago there was a gentleman who had contributed some other recording which also featured Rosie and for some reason they have been removed. I certainly enjoyed them and thanks again for adding yours... God bless
Elvis did indeed love The Statesmen, Jake Hess, and Big Chief, they are brilliant! They were definitely one of his influences, however, Elvis had a nervous demeanor from when he was a child, and when he sang on stage his leg used to shake involuntarily with nervous energy.
SWEETER AS THE DAYS GO BY (1961) Words & Music: Genser Smith Key: Ab 4/4 1. The more I trust Him, the more I love Him, Nothing good for me He'll deny; The longer I know Him, the better I can show Him, I couldn't stop now if I tried. Chorus: It gets sweeter as the days go by, It gets sweeter as the moments fly; His love is richer, deeper, fuller, sweeter, Sweeter, sweeter, sweeter as the days go by. 2. Oh, the moment He saved me, His good grace He gave me, He placed His love down deep in my heart; There's great joy in knowing, with Him I am going, And never more from Him to depart.
Elvis patterned alot of Jackies movements and how he dressed in thearly 1960's. If you watch It Happened at the Worlds Fair or Fun In Acapulco it is very apparent. The dance number Bossa Nova Baby clearly shows how Elvis emulated Wilson in dress and mannerisims.........REAL COOL DADDY O
Lee Dean 33, Amen, he's smoking! I saw a video clip of Elvis on "They Sold Their Soul to Rock & Roll" bragging about he bagged some chick, when he found out he was being recorded he started singing What A Friend We Have In Jesus! Not to mention the way he died!!
There are those who say that Elvis styled his sound after Jake. I can see some of Jackie Wilson in Elvis but Im not sure I see Jake. Any thoughts on that ? I do share Elvis' love for the Statesmn thouhgh.....
If Hovie would just leave the singing to the real singers and have done his job on the piano. Jack and Rosie, oy, and of course the big Jim being on base made the group what it was. When the group was working together it was a pleasure to hear them from day to day. I have five of their recordings and would never trade any of them.
Hmmmmm .......Do I detect a wee bit of Elvis hatred here ? Why the hostilty towards the King ? I do agree with you on one point though.......Big Chief and Elvis had nothing in common ! Who started that crap ???? LOl
I feel sorry for Him, but being a natural clutz myself (meaning I could very well be the one walking backword and trip over something) I laugh evry time I see that part.
First off, I'm a huge Statesmen fan. But stop it with the "Elvis wanted to be a gospel singer" and "Elvis got his moves from Big Chief" crap. Big Chief doesn't move anything like Elvis did. Stop it! Elvis became what he wanted to be---a worldly rock and roll singer who's in Hell now!
This was Elvis' favorite gospel group. I can see why. What voices !!! And Hovie Lister is a true musician and country ham ! LOve Em !

Back when they used to make the best gospel music ever!! Never cared much for this new stuff they call contemporary gospel music
Big Chief Jim Wherington was singing long before Elvis. Hovie was ahead of his time and was awesome as are all the guys in this group!
That accent is so beautiful. So is the playing and singing and everything about this. God bless them. God bless us all.
They are all with the God they sang about for all those years.
I like seeing the piano rock when Hovie plays!
Literally & figuratively!
Wiley I think you and I would be surprised at how many people in this country would love these gospel quartets! One cant help but to feel good after watching them ! Our country could sure use them now !
What a great legendary performance of Statesmen! Big Chief, for sure, is the man before George Younce, of course.....
And far better than George!!
Hovie & the Statesmen. WAY ahead of their time. The charisma was different

any today, as far as i know, that matches

What a fantastic rendition of this song! It's amazing modern of a sound they have from over 40 years ago!
nobody can sing like this quartet...

A real picker upper when things look so bleak. Thank you for being there Jesus.
Dean, you are dong an awesome job of "renewing" wonderful memories...keep it up. These are great!!!
Christians have the happiest music in the world.😊❤
Thats so nice! So nice!
Big Chief was great!!!!
Jack Toney is next to Rosie
I listen this song every day!!!
I love this version over the versions people started singing during the 80s
Very Nicely done! Great Camp Meeting and Shouting Song! Thanks for posting this!
Outstanding ! Thanks and keep them coming. About 3 months ago there was a gentleman who had contributed some other recording which also featured Rosie and for some reason they have been removed. I certainly enjoyed them and thanks again for adding yours... God bless
as a piano player all I can think of is "PUT THE CAMERA BACK ON THE PIANO!" LOL
Oh Yes!
Never gets old ❤
Blackwood quartet a legend in the best of the best
Jack Toney is the MAN!
This is wonderful!!
The Prophets Quartet were great on this song. Big Lew and Roy McNeil made this song just rock.
Poor Rosie almost trips and bites it just before the encore refrain at 2:22! :)
I completely missed that!!🤣
Rosie - no one compares
Rosie - the greatest of the great
The best !!!!
in a world of Justin Beiber, Katy Perry, and Lady Gaga, it is great to hear some real music for a change
WOnderful
I believe I read somewhere Elvis "idolized and imitated Jake Hess' vocal stylings and Big Chief's leg shaking."
Can confirm.
Crying In The Chapel comes to mind as a decent example of Jake's influence.
Elvis did indeed love The Statesmen, Jake Hess, and Big Chief, they are brilliant! They were definitely one of his influences, however, Elvis had a nervous demeanor from when he was a child, and when he sang on stage his leg used to shake involuntarily with nervous energy.
O my goodness they are all over elvis style and music, you can see they where a huge influence on him. Just even look the the cheif stands 👍
elvis had nothing but respect for the big chief in fact said in a interview thats where he learned to shake his hips the statesmen were his favorite

@adkinsda Well, I look forward to hearing them in Glory.
@Gamolmann A "sugar stick" is a song that is always - well almost always - capable of going over big.
Does anyone have "Good Ol Gospel Ship?" LOVE that one.
Hovie was a great singer !
@DeliverTheWord1
All have passed away.

Rosie could sure enough belt it out!
The only two I can't name in this video is the singer on the far left and the one between Rozie and Chief.
Lee Dean 33,
Amen, he's smoking! I saw a video clip of Elvis on "They Sold Their Soul to Rock & Roll" bragging about he bagged some chick, when he found out he was being recorded he started singing What A Friend We Have In Jesus! Not to mention the way he died!!
Must have been part of the set.
Epic

Miss these wonderful singers! Could someone tell who is the singer on the left next to Rosie... Thanks..
Erlene Cary
That would be the very talented Doy Ott! He also plays the piano, and according!!! 💙💙💙
I hope it won't blow out the tube at your house! Heehee
Didn t know that Hovie Lister could sing
Oh yes, Hovie was a wonderful singer. He was also a minister!!! 💙💙💙💙💙💙💙
anyone know when this was recorded? what tape or video was this taken from? thanks
Wonder what Rosie tripped over at 2:27. Bet he was embarrassed!
Very nice. Are they all still alive?
They are all in Glory, praise the Lord!!! 💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙
was this after hovie was released from the army ?
Jackie Wilson huh? Not sure. I'd have to look up more of Jackie & compare. He was another great onefor sure.
@irish0tjk I've listen to Earnie & Signature Sound but, even they don't match it. IMO.
Wha Chief are you talking 'bout here ??? LOL
Whats a "suagr stick"?
No doubt Hovie was a major influence on both Jerry Lee & Jimmy Lee.
Yes Saturn does. The Holy Ghost: Acts 2:38 and nobody needs rebaptized in water. Blood is better.
Speakin of Elvis, If you watch "CHief" Elvis patterned some of his maannerism after him. Course he loved Jake.
