Big chief was a real heartthrob, he looked like a hollywood actor, his charm, his pity charisma that god took him so early. Doy has a smile that looks like an angel. I love these guys
When I retired at 55, I heard bill Gaither was putting ab new statesmen quartet togeather, I applied for the bass part as big chief passed away, so I sent a cd to Mr Gaither, but a got a letter from his secretary it was filled, I sang in 6 different quartets so I was ready but I would have to leave my wife at home, now I put on singing alone, I still love to hear the statesmen, Al york, torrance, California
Rosey Rosell, Jake Hess, Doy Ott, Big Chief Jim Weatherington, Hovie Lister along with Cat Freeman and Denver Crumpler. Reunited in heaven....gotta sound good.
Thanks for live performance film with James “Big Chief” Wetherington. We lost him way too soon from a heart attack which actually struck him at the Nashville Quartet Convention.
I first heard of the statesman from the first Gaither video. Statesman are w/out a doubt the standard that all Southern Gospel Quartets should be measured by. From watching this you can see the excitement, charisma, their love for God.
@@LeanoSamwingaI tried, but I haven't found that footage in TH-cam. However, I did some research and it seems to be part of a VHS called "Vintage footage of The Statesmen with Rosie Rozell"
I was having trouble getting back to this. For some reason I had got Jake mixed up with Denver! So I bow to the fact that I was wrong.I found some old Imperial albums at a friends and started looking back. Jake did ot get his hairpiece right away and he looks different there too! My eyes are not as good as they were but this Christian can admit to being wrong!!! just forgiven not perfect! Happy thanksgiving!
I WAS but did not get to see them in Person. I was young, around 12 and we did not have a lot of money But I have Lots of albums of these gentlemen. I am 76 and Still They Are My Favorite Quartet
Sometimes it was lip-synced, but not this one. Note Jake about to crack up at the start of Something Within when the cat jumped out of the piano. You can hear him chuckle, which would not make a studio recording.
Someone please help me out!...here at 3:54, what is possibly the third song that was in colour they started to sing with Jim Hill entering in at the end!?....I need to know what song this is and if there is a full video of it on here on TH-cam! Something struck my heart and spirit very deeply from the first few utterly sublime chords we have here before it abruptly stops!....thank you very much in advance if you know!
The song is "Faith unlocks the door". It is indeed a powerful song. Not sure if the colour version with Jim Hill is there on youtube, but here is the link to the original version with Jake Hess: th-cam.com/video/krthifWCX8g/w-d-xo.html
For me, The Statesmen are the Best! I Do Really like the Blackwood Brothers! BUT, I have a lot of records of the Statesmen. A difference of opinion, that is ok! I Love them Both!
I think The Blackwood Brothers Quartet (Bill Lyles, RW Blackwood, James Blackwood, Bill Shaw) was the best lineup of any quartet. It’s only rival for me is The Sensational Statesmen Quartet (James Wetherington, Doy Ott, Jake Hess, Denver Crumpler). I like the Cathedrals of 1986-1988 and also Ernie Haase and Signature Sound of the early 2000s.

It's an all star cast for sure! My favorite is the smooth, rich ,mellow baritone of Doy Ott!
This is the quartet by which all other quarters are measured. They set a high bar!
Hey Peachy! Do you by chance know what song they were starting at 3:54 with Jim Hill singing?
Rosey Rosell, Jake Hess, Doy Ott, Big Chief Jim Weatherington, Hovie Lister along with Cat Freeman and Denver Crumpler. Reunited in heaven....gotta sound good.
They were awesome in every way, the best. Love and miss them so much.
Mar! Do you know the song they started singing at 3:54 by chance with Jim Hill entering in?
Love watching Jake's facial expressions as he sings!

At 2:46 you can definitely see where a young Elvis drew some inspiration
Psalms 133:1
Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to 🎶dwell🎵 together in unity!👥
Thank you. Very good video.
Gospel quartet singing at its finest!
Wow They Were Really Getting it Here.
The best of the very best!!
When Jake laughed a cat they had put in the piano just ran in front of them
LOL........love those Statesmen ! And .....is it just me or does Hovie resemble Floyd the Barber from the old Andy Griffith show ??/ LOL
Just some of this BEST!!!!!
They were the greatest
love it! I have this same thing on CD too!
Man I wish I was alive in these days

Me too. But that wouldn’t work because Big Chief is my great grandfather.
This is just fantastic
muy buenos los dos cantos.
awesome
Isn't that Hovie Lister on the piano?
Yeah
Oh Yes and He Can Play! He was also a Baptist Minister! Love these Gentlemen.
jake could flat sing
they did not have to eat the mike because they knew how to sing and can hear every voice

Yes it's Hovie Lister, alright. The one and only :)
Amen
Big Chief sang Bb1 a lot in this first part
And made it sound effortless!
that is jake hess he didnt leave the statesmen until 1963 this is 1959
WOW..Jake had hair
Is it possible to purchase a video of this?
Yes. Gaither.com and I believe it is the Rosie Rozell DVD
The year I was born lol
Who ever did the caption needs to learn the song may words are wrong
Audrey Jenkins I agree
Audrey! Do you know to what they started singing at 3:54 with Jim Hill entering in?
@@CziffraTheThird Faith Unlocks the door. I wish the publisher of this channel would post the footage.
@LeanoSamwinga Unfortunately, I no longer have access to that account or the videos I posted these from in a digital format.
They are very very good... but number one was the Blackwood Brothers Quartet whit J.D Sumner James B Cecil B and Bill Shaw

Well even Bill Gaither can get it wrong! That is not Jake Hess in 1959 he was not singing with the Statesmen.
Carolyn Lighthart that most certainly IS Jake Hess
Carolyn Lighthart, This is Hovie, Chief, Doy, Jake and Rosie.
