    I'm super-excited I was able to snag one direct from Elektron! It looks like such a great mashup of features from three different holes in my setup: analog drum machine, performance effects (effects sequencing and trig mods), and a solid hardware synth.

    I've just bought one, will be with me next week some time. I've had all the Elektron boxes except digitone and have kept the analog keys out of all of them. The Analog keys is the right mix of everything Elektron imo, keys, CV/ mod stick and separate outs etc etc..so my plan is to tie the Syntakt to the Analog keys as a drum brain and let the AK do the pads and melody stuff. Watching your vids gives inspiration for these boxes cheers.

    This baby can do some pretty solid acid lines. It's like having an 808, 909 and 303 with killer effects and filters and several digital synths on top. Honestly 1k is a good deal for how capable the Syntakt is. From what I've seen and heard so far, this thing blows every other groovebox out of the water. So glad that I decided not to get the MC-707 and go with this (ordered it last weekend). The Syntakt sounds much better to my ears. I think the way to really get great results will be not to try to make it sound like other things, but to embrace the unique style of the machines and sequencer and just get weird with it. I can't wait to see how aggressive and glitchy I can make it sound.

      @visible7044 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      dude you’ve been hearing those two machines for over a decade . you’ve heard like five minutes of this thing in total lol and never touched one but somehow you know it doesn’t have a unique sound? lol ok 👍 it has absolutely nothing in common with a digitakt btw aside from the sequencer and hardware layout. and almost nothing in common with a digitone aside from that it has a fm machine in it.

    • @lockyp204
      @lockyp204 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@visible7044 Yeah sure. You’re right in that it’s early days. Sure there’s aspects of it that sound different, but on a whole not really. Especially if you own the other two. No cv on a drum machine is a major let down to altering that inescapable Elektron sound. I think it’s a great box. If I was buying my first takt, I’d probably choose it. But at the moment I’d rather put that money towards a pulsar 23. Each to their own 🤷‍♂️

    I’m not sure why people keep saying that the Digitone sounds better, as if this is a replacement. It’s not meant to be. It’s mainly meant for drums and the Digitone for synth tones. Yes, both can do the other but this feels like a compliment to the Digitone, not a replacement.

    • @BoBeats

      Agreed. Digitone is not a good comparison, its a poly synth. This is a drum synth & groovebox + analog FX unit

    For someone owning one it sounds an awful lot like Cycles with filters and better effects. The DNA is unmistakable. (:
    The extra machines and analog voices are adding a bit of versatility though. Still, I wish the wouldn't have focused on drums synthesis quite as much and rather designed the Elektron version of an Mc707. (;

  • @sinewaymusic
    @sinewaymusic 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    I'm torn about this one. On paper, this is an Elektron box that was almost tailor made for me (except the lack of battery operation), but there's something lackluster about the synth/melody tones. It sounds like a truly AMAZING drum synth, but the melody aspects of the synth leave something to be desired. It's like they took their least interesting tone device (Model:Cycles) rather than aiming for something a bit more sonically rich. Knowing how good you are with sound design on other synths, I'm guessing it comes down to limitations of the machines/engines themselves. Which is a shame, because the Digitone sounds amazing (but kind of sucks as a drum synth). Perhaps the analog machine with PWM can bring out some goodness though? Also, why oh why did they leave out the arp?! Especially given that the tracks are monophonic, an arp would really open up the creative capabilities. The arp on the Digitone is amazing and would be an obvious fit here.

    • @Roboprogs
      @Roboprogs 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It’s a shame when they made Digitone Keys they didn’t increase the polyphony. The DN synth engine sounds great, but only 8 voices on 4 tracks?!?
      Got a bigger keyboard, instead. (Yeah, I said “keys”, rather than a dedicated groovebox)

    • @BoBeats
      @BoBeats  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes, it definitely shines as a percussive synth. Its also in the name: Digitakt … Syntakt (takt = beat)… DigiTONE… So focus is on percussive elements. I think they are working within the limitations of the design of the Takt boxes here. Like I said in the review a poly machine would be amazing but im not sure how they’d implement that.

    • @guille242es
      @guille242es 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I hope future firmware updates will let this machine shine in the synth aspect. I think percusive side is already very well built, but synth engines are a little too simple in terms of sound design. Digitone is obviously a better machine for sound sculpture. I guess Syntakt is more suited for drum jobs as it is right now.

    • @sinewaymusic
      @sinewaymusic 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@BoBeats But my point is that there's nothing that limits them from including an arp. Even more so, it's especially relevant *because* the tracks are monophonic. Arps are a way of playing chords with a monophonic synth. It surprises me that they didn't add it, but I'm guessing that their philosophy is that it's a drum synth first and foremost.
      BTW, I'm Swedish. Trevlig helg! 🧡

    • @BoBeats
      @BoBeats  2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Oh I don’t disagree. I would love to see an ARP, a polyphonic machine, some more expanded synth machines too. Man, once you start thinking about it theres alot of cool improvements they can make.

    See Novation new circuits. See Electribe V2. See Digitakt and Digitone( ok totally different beasts) but since this one has the Rytm guts... It wouldn't have hurt to slap a sampler oscillator in there.
    And don't give me the crap about CPU and shit. The Dirty wave M8 streams samples like a champ and it's based ok a freaking teensy :) and yeah. I love it to bits.

    I am very torn on this one. It would be a great companion to my A4. I could sequence 7 analog voices individually or send midi and make some really unique analog chord progressions. The eight synth tracks in combination with my Digitone could create infinite sounds and projects. I feel like the Digitakt still reigns king over this unit just because it is a sampler. You can get high quality samples that are far superior or can achieve the sound you desire at a much faster rate. its seems that this box would appeal to a consumer who wants a "Jack of all trades". As the saying goes though " The jack of all trades is the master of none". Maybe that is the beauty of this machine though?

    I see everyone raging over the Syntakt and I wonder if everyone is getting a free one to review or what? I do not often buy gear and tend to use older gear so my idea of an established interface design style is more along the lines of an early electribe. Yet, this really sounds good though and it tempting.
    So really I suppose i am curious about the interface. A lot of the small units either have drum pads which get programmed to sounds, or have some kind of approximation of a keyboard. This seems to just use buttons, how does the note playing feel to you with this? How is the relationship between notes and buttons laid out?

    Any tips on making the chord machine sound a bit more interesting? No matter what I do it just sounds like model cycles chords... One thing was doing tiny wavetable envelopes that don't loop, just for transient/body difference.
    I feel like everything either comes out model cycles (because it pretty much is in digital fm stuff), and the analog machines, filters, delay, reverb has a kind of dark unclear feel that could do with a bit of freshening somehow? I definitely don't feel like the syntakt gels well with my brain, it's an awesomely powerful box but has felt like a struggle since the beginning. New machines help a bit.

    Cool video, but I have to be honest, I miss the older, pre-product-placement content. I followed this channel and the channels of people like Dr.Mix and Heinbach years ago for the unique approaches to music making, and interesting demos of odd or obscure instruments. When all five or six of my favorite TH-camrs post a sponsored video about the very same synth at the very same time. I start to lose interest very quickly.
    I recognize the benefits of sponsorship and how BoBeats, and and others, make their living via TH-cam, but five variations of the same Elektron or Korg commercial is no longer holding my interest.
    Just my two bits.

    • @BoBeats
      @BoBeats  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Would you rather I not make a video on new gear?
      Also. This is not a commercial. I don’t get paid, theres no contract, there’s no input from the company providing the gear. I make maybe 2-3 paid for videos every year and the main reason I cover new gear is because people want me to and I think its fun when theres something new to explain.

      @@BoBeats I fully support and enjoy seeing new gear. I also fully support and endorse you getting paid for your work. I subscribe to many of my favourite youtubers on patreon and buy their music etc. from bandcamp.
      I think, for me, it is problematic when I sit down to drink a cup of tea and catch up on my gear videos and all of them are the very same piece of gear. For instance, in the last 24 hours or so, everyone had been demoing the Volca FM2. For me, That's overkill. I'm a product designer by trade, and I know that the companies love TH-cam and Instagram because it provide an outlet to a very specific and predicable demographic. (It's highly likely that Kitchen Aid isn't going to send you a blender to review). The issue happens when a company like Korg or Elektron target a number of content producers that all share the same audience.
      I'm not trying to be mean-spirited or negative, and like I said, I enjoy your channel and fully support you gaining revenue from it. I also enjoy the music you produce with the gear you present. I'm just aware that over the last few months, what used to feel like independent and unique content from many of my favourite producers is starting to converge and feel more like regular press-releases.
      This is but the opinion of one lowly viewer.

Something I am trying to get better at is keeping my content diverse. But unfortunately as my health have been so-so, and since energy been low it has meant I’ve focused on new releases as this is arguably what most of the subscribers care for. I recognize that this can be boring sometimes as it means I cover the same things as others. So I will try and keep this in mind.

Curiously the people who play them look like engineers and their music sounds always sounds exactly the same, music by engineers. All this togethr, ultra-commercialization of pseudo-nostalgia, all designed by engineers, is sure way to make everything as unfresh and tired as possible.
