@@boodro2122 - Just want to state that this comment is meant to be a nice one: Not meant in a mean way at all and I mean it in good faith.
SoM was the third game I got on my system and I adore it as it was challenging enough to play when I was a kid. The combat system was a bit tricky and the AI didn't always work that well, but back then things like that were not something kids EVER thought about really. We all went past those things to discover HOW to be a game. The music (oh god that amazing music...), the overall game play, and - to anybody else who played this as a kid - that Opening movie video when the camera sprawled across the world like you were flying (I had never seen anything like that to that detail in a game before) - absolutely blew me away. Everything about this game did. It's an action style RPG of sorts, and can be quite challenging and exciting. Some people don't like Action RPGs much, so maybe that could be it perhaps?
This is not meant to sound condescending, but do you enjoy Zelda very much or games similar to that? Or do you think it is just specifically the Mana games? I have found that some people who enjoy certain kinds of games gravitate toward those and stay away from others. I mean - that's one of the reasons the Console wars occured after all, haha
For me Zelda/Mana/FF4/Chrono Trigger were tied for years for my top favorite game. All were epic and exciting. Honestly I still have a hard time committing to which one is technically better than the other for me. I've beaten all of those games so many times now that, it's hard to say. Though I think though that Chrono Trigger may JUST barely eek out into front, but honestly, there were so many amazing games on the SNES that I would be hard pressed to shame anyone for not liking a grand multitude of different games as their favorite - which I would never do anyway. Damn the 90's game era was such an amazing time to be a kid. Some of the best stuff we've ever seen, and I sadly think we won't see its like again.
And with that BOODRO, just curious, which game do you feel is your favorite on the system? I would honestly like to know! :-)

Shining Force & Shining Force II for Sega Genesis did not have graphics/backgrounds and battle animations like this.... I wish it did, I was a Genesis kid. SNES had superior sound and graphics, this coming from a die hard Sega Fanboy. I love all the systems and keep a special place in my heart for Sega Genesis and turn based rpg's.... but I LOVE collecting and playing now in 2021 for SNES, all the old titles I used to play at my friends houses that had SNES consoles. I got this on release date and it screamed "masterpiece" from the first moment, even before it got hyped to death. SquareSoft made some gorgeous polished games on the SNES. The music felt like it should've come off a CD, and I bought the SNES stereo adapter just for this game. I hated the PS1 era - they traded gorgeous 2D pixel art for distorted grainy pre-rendered crap, and it felt like we'd stepped back a generation. SNES was Square's peak, and arguably the high water mark for JRPGs.

SNES version is the best because it was the original incarnation. Don't get me wrong. I played the DS version with the extra features and liked it, but the classic has better charm.

Personally I'd have to disagree with you. When it comes to the best version of Chrono Trigger, the DS version will always win out for me. I love all the extra content and how it doesn't even feel tacked-on like a lot of other Square remake's content does, the portable factor works extremely well with the game's pick-up-and-play nature (I'd say that Chrono Trigger can be picked up and played unlike a lot of RPGs. Not a flaw with most RPGs, it's just a design choice that molds well with CT specifically), and while I'm usually a huge fan of Ted Woolsey's work as a translator, Chrono Trigger was some of his weakest work in my opinion, and the DS translation carries a bit more emotion, at least in my opinion. The SNES game is still masterful, but the DS version is one step away from Nirvana. Only flaw with the DS version is the resolution, slightly smaller than the original (hint hint Square, I'd LOVE to see a remake on PS4 and Switch, don't update graphics or any shit, just a nice port of the DS version).

This has been my favorite game of all time for 26 years. It's the only video game I store in my safe.
Also, I had read back in the day in Nintendo Power that Magus as 6,666 HP. He was so intimidating to my adolescent self that I stopped playing for a week until I mustered up the courage to fight him. That's perhaps the most epic boss music ever.

And knowing that this kingdom wasn't around anymore made you realize that something would be going terribly wrong any time soon. But that ark was the best Cronotrigger had to offer.

This game is a masterpiece. The only RPG I like better than it is FFVI. I still remember in 1995 my neighbor got CT before I did, and when we first turned it on, seeing the pendulum swinging back and forth as we watched the opening and that music...I just knew we were in for something epic!

Im not a big gamer now a days, but crono trigger unlocked the door for a lot of other games afterwards. It is the best "choose your own adventure" game ever made. The options might seem limited now, but the story was so good that either you couldn't make a wrong decision or it didnt matter. No matter the outcome, it is satisfying. I love the fact they left Cronos back story kind of blank. It gives the player freedom of interpretation. The characters are all so different and yet not just filler to the story either. Music, top notch. And this was all on a "relic" of a console. Graphics are great but it's all about the story and progression, no matter what. Atleast imho.

Well, a few years ago he bought a RetroBit and ordered a copy of Chrono Trigger through Amazon. When I finally got the chance to play, I immediately fell in love with the game. I poured so many hours into it and after all was said and done, this game became my favorite game ever made and I think I was able to appreciate it more because I was an adult. If I had played it as a kid, I wouldn't have remembered anything about it.

I like how the sorry starts off light-hearted and fun before getting more serious. It really helps lull you into this world and want to save it from Lavos.
I also love how the guy who started out as the main villain is kind of the protagonist of the story and the main character is just there to witness it all. I mean, all the plot events cycle around and relate to this protagonist’s actions while the main character is just kind of there without feeling unnecessary (unlike in ff12). It’s a unique and surprisingly well told story.

In my memories it was the coolest thing ever, and I confess I got a little disappointed when I replayed it a couple months ago. But this is the thing with the pixel art style, it ages a lot better than the low poli graphics of the ps one. Personally I would love to see a remake of chrono trigger, but I sincerely doubt we will ever see one since the people who worked on the game are constantly tied up in other projects, I mean Yasunori Mistuda and Nobuo Uematsu (Nobuo Uematsu does the music for the final fantasy series) did the soundtrack, Alira Toriyama did the artwork (and aside from anime, also does the artwork for the dragon quest series), Hironobu Sakaguchi did the gameplay (also does the final fantasy series), and Masato Kato did the story... but if Squenix ever plans to do a remake of this game, they'll need to do it sooner than later because those guys are getting up there in age

No over abundance of random encounters, not a generic medieval-focus story like almost eve rpg back in the day, no grinding required but is not overtly easy and have the best implementation of final fantasy active-time battle.

I would still consider Chrono Trigger the best JRPG of them all, while the others were really, really good. What a Masterpiece. Every time I beat it I love every second of it. I love Final Fantasy and this blew it out of the water. The battle system is flawless, I love how tech's work, and the small cast of characters is perfect since I feel really connected to each of them unlike I did for FF6. The first time going to the future and learning about Lavos, was terrifying I don't know any other villain that freaked me out more when I was young. It killed the freakin dinosaurs and it doesn't even stop there!
Multiple endings, new game plus. Oh and like you said, the bosses felt like an event and that's a big deal for me.

I got everything on the DS version so much so that I maxed out the stats of all the characters and got them to lvl max. It really is a dream game. The only part of the game I ever find annoying is getting up the windy mountain. Even that is a inconsequential personal gripe.
