+PeanutButterGamer Well, Austin, if you haven't played this game before, then you need to stop playing Zelda CGI titles for a bit, and give yourself a rewarding experience. It's sacrilege for an internet game reviewer to have never completed Chrono Trigger.
+what? I agree to a point. Not failed, but he should've talked about it a bit more, especially when the soundtrack won a lot of awards during its release year. +Shikamaru00009 has a good point. :D
Well he did play music from the game throughout the review, people with DISCERNING TASTES should be able to tell that it's some of the best on SNES (only Final Fantasy VI and Yoshi's Island can compare, imo)
As a really young kid, the desire to play Chrono Trigger was what motivated me to learn to read. It's been my all time favorite video game pretty much ever since. I still go back and replay it every few months to a year. In all that time, I don't think I ever caught the significance of that line until I watched this video.
I actually never gave this game a chance because I thought it was a game pumped FULL of nostalgia, but you've sold it to me. I may have to give it a go
+CreepsMcPasta people being nostalgic for it shouldn't be a detriment to people playing it; they're probably nostalgic for it because it's a good thing that they fondly remember, it's not like you "had to be there" to enjoy it since it's a game you can still play, haha
+CreepsMcPasta A lot of the time older games are overhyped and only good if you're being nostalgic, but sometimes older games are just legitimately great games. Chrono Trigger is the latter.
@@Chad_Eldridge I still want it 😁. I don't care about the legacy. If someone doesn't like one of the vols or parts in a series. Just don't play it or watch it. I like all remakes in movies & games. As long as I'm entertain; that's all that matters. I'm fine with fan made stuff too. I WANT MORE OF THE SERIES
15:04 Actually, that's a lie. Lavos IS stronger when you first meet him compared to the next time you fight him. There are different stats. Normal Lavos: 10,000 HP 127 Strength (or something like that) Ocean Palace Lavos: 30,000 HP 180 Strength They don't want you to win, but if you DO, it doesn't force a loss.
I know Jared was pouring on lots of praise for Chrono Trigger, but he didn't mention how great the music is. Yasunori Mitsuda turned out a masterful soundtrack and it is probably my favorite of any game I've ever played.
Frog's Theme and Magus' Theme are just so good, and showcase their character so well. Frog's is knightly and heroic while Magus' can stand as a boss battle theme or just show his power. There's so many others that are too good, but those 2 always stand out to me.
It would have been redundant. I can't never find a person that hates this soundtrack. The entire soundtrack is the most complete body of work. Mentioning it isn't needed
I think it's that amazing soundtrack that really makes the game, IMO. Chrono Trigger has some interesting ideas, and a well written story, but that's hardly unique. The sprite work is wonderful, but there are other titles with great sprite work and animations. But it is the amazing soundtrack that ties everything together into a cohesive whole. Every emotional beat is accompanied by a corresponding change in the soundtrack. They also used different styles for the different time periods, and every one is a banger. Each theme could carry a game on its own, but the collections is truly special. The end theme, To Far Away Times, is one of my favorite pieces of instrumental music from any source.
The music from Chrono Trigger is amazing and some of Mitsuda's finest work. Nice job using most of the music in the video. Props to finding a way to use Singing Mountain
+TheMetalGaia The Day the World Revived, Corridors of Time, Magus Battle Theme, To Far Away Times, Singing Mountain. My god the music in this game is amazing.
Chrono Trigger and Star Ocean: the Second Story--two absolute MASTERPIECES from an era where game creation was truly an art. I've done a lot of research into the limitations and tribulations of creating 16-bit games--everything from sprites to RAM allocation, layering, bit-level masking and music creation and--holy crap. That they could make Chrono Trigger during the SNES period is nothing short of a marvel.
haha someone after my heart, CT and star ocean tss both great games. if i had a list of top rpgs it would be something like 1: the witcher 3 2: ff10 3: ff6 4: chrono trigger 5: star ocean the second story 6: lufia 2 7: legend of the dragoon 8: ff7
Which makes sense from a lore perspective: hes being juiced up by Zeal as well as not having burnt up his power for millenia before making his appearance at the final battle.
The length is a great point. I played it again recently and couldn't believe how fast it was moving . It reminds me of Mario Rpg in that it is completely packed full of content. Things are constantly moving
I love ff6. In that game the bad guy actually wins. Kefka successfully destroys the world and becomes a god. A GOD. Killing him afterwords doesn't change the fact that the world is in ruins and most everyone is dead or insane or hungry or scared ...etc. Bad ass.
My favorite video of all time from Projared. The time have change now... 8/27/2019 Edit: Everything now has REALLY change this TIME around. ProJared proof that he hasn't send those pics to underage. It's people who wanna screw him up. ProJared if you are reading this I am very sorry for doubting you.
@@meow_bastard never forget innocent until proven guilty, and his recent video has ruined alot of the so called proof he was guilty at least for now, well see if a rebuttal comes
@@oathkeeperofoblivion972 I also feel like a sack of shit because I've been with normal boots for 4 years now and projared was one of my favorite people in normal boots and I just abandoned him when he needed help I really feel bad now
I actually thought that the "Lavos inside of Lavos" boss idea was pretty genius. Just like how you discover who the real enemy is in the future, Lavos's true form as a space-faring advanced alien (as opposed to the dinosaur-like shell) is pretty amazing. And what's more is that the true heart is one of the pods you fight, not even the humanoid being in the middle. It makes it some obtuse and cool. I remember my first fight against Lavos and upon it being revealed that I had to progress inside of the shell I was literally mind-blown.
Plus if you have Lucca in your party when Lavos reveals his "final form" (C'mon, this IS Toriyama after all. xD) she mentions how he's adapted to a humanoid like form by gathering DNA from the entire planet and using it to birth Lavos Spawns, to send them to different planets to repeat the cycle. The "Parasite" Lavos is only the protective shell that harbors the true Lavos inside, always learning and adapting to new things.
For me, the most mesmerizing thing about Lavos was the idea of Lavos. This final character was at least a decade ahead of its time. He wasn't just the stereotypical evil monster. They touched on some really heavy shit with this one...the forest scene in Lucca's side story where everyone's talking about fate and what/who put them on this journey? Their realization before the final battle about what they're actually fighting? They weren't making bad guys like this in the 90's
Needs the right party together with the right item. Usually that party is all the folks who can equip it. E.g. I think the Black Rock is Marle, Lucca, Magus - since they can equip it - but I never get around to using it in my playthrough the same theory was true for the "Spin Strike" ring
Black, Blue, White, Silver, Gold. Black and blue are the only triple techs Magus gets. Silver, white, and gold are extra triple techs for non-Crono combos of the original six members. One you get in Zeal, one in the black omen, one from a nu in the village ruins in the far past, one from having Frog catch a stone throne at the party in the mountains in the middle ages. I can't recall the location of the fifth stone at the moment. Maybe in the island dungeon in the middle ages where you got the rainbow shell? The black stone is dark eternal, a group-hitting shadow tech with Magus, Lucca, and Marle. The blue stone is Omega Flare, a group-hitting shadow tech with Magus, Lucca, and Robo. Let's see... white is the poyozo dance with the ladies... silver is spin strike... Ayla is in that one. The gold is Frog... Eh. that's all I got for 2:20AM.
definitely one of my favorite games of all time. ironically tho, years later, the thing that I remember most from the game is the music. probably some of the best and most memorable music in a game ever
+MinMinForTheWin I've seen him before...think it was something to do with FE music. But nowhere near everywhere, unless he just took over the internet or something.
***** Heh, I've played FEs 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 11, 12, and 13. My favorites are Gaiden and Rekka No Ken, and Thracia 776 has impressed me. My least faves are probably FE1 and it's many remakes.
***** Uh, yeah, but I didn't list it cause I only beat the first chapter...and I lost the archer during it, so TBH I haven't even beaten FE5's first chapter. You're right though.
now imagine if chrono trigger was 3D with realistic graphics, i bet it wouldnt be as good, those sprite graphics and vibrant colors helped a lot with the charm of the game
This is lampshaded in the Dream Team ending-- they point out that the sprites are so detailed that they even have animated self-shadows and stuff. Cool.
Lol yeah, it's a wee more complicated that hearing Lavos was there. Which is actually what makes it more intriguing, since you literally had no idea that was going to happen.
The first time you go there yes, it is for a rock needed to reforge the Masamune for Frog so you can stop Magus. The second time you go there, you hear that's where lavos was born, so he's not wrong.
CliffJot Well,if we're going to get even more technical we don't even "return". We just get thrown into a portal and randomly found ourselves there. If memory serves correctly. A portal created when Lavos was summoned I believe.
I have a DS copy, a PS1 copy, and a Japanese SNES copy with my second save file frozen on the menu softlocking glitch at the beginning :) this thing is fun as hell lol
Random and unrelated question, which characters do you choose to stick with? Like what ProJared said, I have that problem of not wanting to leave anyone behind cause everyone is interesting and viable in combat. It made me stop playing ultimately.
@@WingMaster562 I used to go with Magus, Lucca and Robo for Omega Flare, but I found out that ultimately my great team is Crono, Ayla and Robo. Their triple tech Twister can get as strong as the others, doing more than 10,000 damage, and it doesn't need any kind of stone whatsoever. Plus, to me, they're the three strongest physically, and Robo's healing is the strongest (Marle's healing spells only hit one target unless she combines it with Crono, and Frog's Heal is weak, only healing about half the party's HP at my strongest). Although I have to admit, Frog's weaker healing isn't a problem anymore by the end of the game, seeing as my level and defenses are too high to really care. If I depend on Robo just because he heals better, I'm not doing well. But his Crisis Arm and stronger physicals make him great. Plus, he can do three kinds of elemental damage.
I remember when I first unlocked New Game + My mind was completely blown, The fact I could carry over all the progress I did and get multiple endings blew my mind as a child. Despite all that... Chrono Trigger still isn't my favorite game. FF4 Holds that spot and Nostalgia will probably keep it that way.
+EscoNitz Aye. While I concede that Chrono Trigger's probably one of the objectively best RPGs ever made, it isn't my personal favorite either. It's up there, certainly, but the honor of being my favorite goes to Shining Force on the Genesis. And I tell you what, it's entirely because of nostalgic bias. I love that game unconditionally for it being one of my first
Same here. Love that game. Though I sucked at it when I was a kid and only beat it the first time in 8th grade. But yeah. Shining Force is probably my favorite game of all time.
I'm aware of it. And I agree it's a damn good port. I really enjoy the revised story, makes everything make a whole lot more sense. Only things I'm a little iffy on are the new characters (Mawlock in particular I just never found good use of. He was just a little too gimmicky for me.) and the difficulty seeming to be reduced by a lot.
Do you REALLY want a new Chrono game, though? I mean, from Square as it exists TODAY? Really think that over, really think of what they've done to Final Fantasy. Try to remember how long it's been since they've made anything even close to as good as Chrono Trigger. Do you want a sequel to one of your all time favorite games in THESE GUYS' hands?
Parnifia the Bastard solid 75 last I checked. It's a 25 hour game but if the nostalgia and price is worth it for you I say go for it. I'm enjoying it so far but that's just me.
I had already bought it; I also pre-ordered MN9, and look how that turned out for me. But a 75% is significantly better than Mighty No. 9's reception, so that's reassuring.
I played Chrono Trigger for the first time recently. Truly a masterpiece. Oh and it took me 34 hours but that's a first play through without knowing what i was doing.
Random and unrelated question, which characters do you choose to stick with? Like what ProJared said, I have that problem of not wanting to leave anyone behind cause everyone is interesting and viable in combat. It made me stop playing ultimately.
@@WingMaster562 I use Chrono, Marle and Frog. I like to keep the main couple together and Frog is too good and too cool to pass up. Chrono's and Frog's double tech are some of the best in the game for attacking and Marle's and Frog's double techs are some of the best for healing.
+Tsurugi Kage I called it. I don't know how, but yesterday I just had a feeling that he'd make a Chrono Trigger video today. Probably 'cause I started playing it yesterday.
Man this game... still my favorite of all time, the gameplay, story, music, mechanics... the freaking transition (or the lack of it) of the random encounters... I hope someday you Epoch brings you to play Chrono Cross
Guys if you haven't played it yet you really need to play this game! Projared isn't overselling it at this really is one of the best games, not just RPG game, ever made! The story, the battle mechanics, the musics, colors and sprites, it has it all!
My favorite game of all time. I mowed so many lawns that year so I could buy it at launch. I'm kind of glad there won't be a new Chrono game. Modern Square-Enix would just screw it up.
+Caio Bravely Default was made by three companies and Square was one of them. Besides that it was, basically, a slightly different version of Final Fantasy 5.
+Whirlwind Spiral The fail started with 12 IMHO, and now they are openly talking about changing all the mechanics behind FF7 in the remake. What I don't get is why SE thinks Final Fantasy has to "evolve" its turn based combat but they leave Dragon Quest alone. Where the hell is DQ's evolution into a hyper linear auto battle sleepover?
+Mr. Horseshoe Given that Chrono Cross was an OK fun RPG, but nowhere near as good as Chrono Trigger, I'm kindda glad too. Though, if they ever decide to, I just wish they ignore Chrono Cross ever existed, like Radical Dreamers. Is is weird how Square managed to, even back then, forget what made CT so great. All those useless characters that had next to no motivation to go with you and were, ultimately, redundant, and took focus away from the actually important characters, the weird "infinite reality" that looked more like an excuse to screw up with the Chrono Trigger ending, the unsatisfying "true" ending, the weird battle system where everyone and, literally, their mother can use mostly the same magic whereas magic was a central plot item in CT and the convoluted story that had no impact unless you know CT (and most of the impact is F*CK, they did that to that character?!).... I could go on.... The music, though, is awesome. Maybe even better than CT, which is a tough thing to achieve.
This is by far the best video I've watched in a long time. Chrono Trigger is one of my favorite games of all time, and you've done it more than justice good sir. :)
short rpgs like this are great. Suikoden 1 and 2 are also great rpgs that are relatively short. What I love about them is that every moment of the game feels interesting and purposeful. Unlike many RPG's that are filled with uninspiring filler and fluff just to pad the length
The Halvening yeah i can see why. Tradisional turn based JRPG in general is slow paced. And this game's general quick pace really increase the enjoyment value that i could get from it.
Oh and also, i can understand Suikoden 1 being short, but Suikoden 2? Really? I remember it took 40 hours for me to finish that game. Seems pretty long to me, if not common for a JRPG
Super Nintendo games' soundtrack as a whole was the pinacle of the genre. I don't remember having that kind of atmosphere conveyed through music in any game from further generations (maybe except for Sonic Mania but that one doesn't count for obvious reasons). Chrono Trigger soundtrack particularly is like a proof that God exists
The yearly, annual Projared Playlist Rewatch to take my mind off of some stressful things lately, and... God, man, some things you just can't avoid. Obviously he didn't create this masterpiece of a game, but the characters are so iconic, and charming thanks to their personalities, story, and of course their designs. Rest in Peace, Akira Toriyama.
jared: let me just put this to rest. chrono trigger- me: *very serious face* jared: is _amazing_ me: :) jared: it is undoubtedly one of the finest games ever created me: :D I love it when he reviews games he likes
I honestly didn’t know about your channel until the controversy, heard people were unsubscribing in droves. I immediately looked up your channel and subscribed just to go against the grain; I’m deeply saddened by how easily people can turn on someone based on near hearsay.
Definitely one of the best character resurrections that I’ve seen in fictional storytelling. I love how important Chrono’s death is in the events of history and how you don’t resurrection him, but rather save him and swap him with a clone, ensuring that his death still happens and doesn’t wreck the timeline.
You forgot to mention this game's amazing soundtrack. One of the best soundtracks ever made for a game IMO. Yasunori Mitsuda is a genius. If you enjoy Chrono Trigger music, I have been remaking the entire OST with real instrument samples to make it sound like a modern game soundtrack. Check out my stuff, you won't be disappointed.
I have the ps1 version that came in a dual pack with final fantasy 4 both games soundtracks are amazing but the ps1 version comes with extra cinematics so it has this badass opening with the main theme and it my favorite part is watching the opening cinematic while the amazing theme plays. Gets me pumped every time
I remember renting CT from Blockbuster when it was new every weekend. I never would have imagined that CT, FF IV and VI would set the bar so high. Every time I play it, I feel like I'm an eight year old all over again.
For some reason, there seems to be a lot of people that despise Lucca. While I don't think she's the best character, I don't see anything wrong with her. She's just Chrono's nerdy friend. What's so bad about that? Anyways, for some amusing dialog, rename Marle to Nadia and Frog to Glenn when you meet them. It makes the "reveals" about their "true names" kind of funny.
Because Marle is the stereotype of the hot blonde in school we all admired, while Lucca is the stereotype of the girls that actually talked to us back then. That's it...
The trial in the game actually has another layer that is only revealed in the side quests. The Chancellor is actually being impersonated by Yakra's descendant. And because you messed with the timeline, you actually helped Glenn defeat Yakra in 600 AD. Yakra XIII's goal was to get back at the crown, but he just happened to sentence you to death for "kidnapping Nadia" along the way. And on an unrelated note, the Lavos that kills Crono in the story is actually much stronger than the end game version. If you do beat him, you have to fight the last two forms right then and there. Normally, you can teleport to the End of Time from inside Lavo's shell, but not in this case. However, if you finish off the Lavos Core, you get the same ending as if you beat him at the very start of the game, the "Dream Project" ending where you meet the creators.
Chrono is one of the most important and exquisite experiences in JRPGS I have ever experienced. There is too much for me to say in a comment but one thing i will target is that this game, to me has the greatest soundtrack Ive ever heard in a game. It just makes every experience something to love and admire. I played this not long after release in 1995 and i have never forgotten how i felt after playing this game. The only thing that comes close is FF4 and FF6 for me, and they dont quite get to where i put this game. It is also amazing that Chrono Trigger has never had a sequel and that into itself is shocking as hell. Great review, thank you!
I've watched this video so many times that I already know a lot of it by heart... it gives me a sense of unity, camaraderie... nostalgia. I travel back in time, same as the very game we're in love with.
Denzy I was always a great fan of the music in this game. It is so well crafted and emotionally charged, many would say expressive, and does its job very well. I still get chills when I hear selections from it.
I remember playing this on an emulator as a kid at my grandparents basement. True masterpiece and the music. I'm surprised you didn't talk much about some of the character themes (especially Frog). Anyways, big fan keep up the good work!
A. I never realized Akira Toriyama was the graphical artist for the game, but it's so obvious now, and B. The second version of Lavoz, the first one you fight when you enter his shell, has a similar face/mouth to Imperfect Cell from DBZ, not to mention Frieza's head dome from one of this middle forms.
20:20 actually I wouldn't go far as to say that's "Creature Lavos" more like, it's shell. I mean, when you kill the Lavos Spawn the little "mouth" disappears and all that remains is, the shell. That's just Lavos' protection, hell if you think about it, it's SHIP with which it sails the ocean of stars seeking out more bountiful life to consume. Also, JEHOVA from FF7 stole the whole "extra-terrestrial mutagenic space parasite" thing from Lavos, that chick should be cutting the space urchin one hefty royalty check.
Man, I can't believe you didn't say anything about the incredible music in the game. Even just hearing the clips played in the video gave me goosebumps as it brought me back to some of those epic moments in the game. So many of the tracks perfectly suit the scenes they're played in and they really help to convey the great sense of adventure in the game. It's definitely one of my favorite video game soundtracks of all time.
It's so weird. On one hand, I knew but I always saved him without thought...I'm half way through a game now. Maybe I do this one without saving him...man that's gonna be odd.
That list of RPG's for me would be Chrono Trigger, the EarthBound series, Fire Emblem Awakening, and Pokemon Black & White. They all have some of the best RPG gameplay to ever be seen and stories so touching that they're the only games to ever bring tears to my eyes.
Here's a big tip if you aren't sure if you are ready to face lavos or not. You know Spekkio right? Go see him at the end of time, he teaches you and every character except Robo, Magus, and Ayla Magic. U find him behind Gaspar the old man, the door he tells you about, there lies Spekkio, the self proclaimed Master of War. See Spekkio is a Nu. Those round Smiley green haired things? Ya, turns out each one of them is STRONGER than Lavos! Spekkio isn't the master of war, he is just the last remaining Nu, so I guess he's not wrong then. He says that if he looks weak to you it's because you are weak. And if he looks strong to you it's because you are strong. Regardless, if you beat him on any of his stages then you are ready for Lavos because Spekkio will NOT take it easy on you. He will absolutely destroy you if you aren't skilled enough. He changes his form as you grow stronger, at first he's one of these little sheep looking monsters. But his final form is said to be a pink Nu. With me, in my new game plus, I'm in my lvl 80's and he looks like a big blue muscle bound demon thing. Keep in mind I got to my 80's on my first playthrough and although even if your monster (ds version only) resets, Spekkio's form does not because your level does not reset. So tldr, focus on defeating Spekkio, if you can't beat him, probably don't go fight Lavos. Best thing is that there are no penalties for losing to Spekkio. It's all just practice, as he puts it.
Aidan Smith They'd be rereleases or updated ports. While there is a little extra content, the core system, story, etc. hasn't been touched just added onto or adjusted/downgraded a little to work with the system. Same as Disgaea on the PSP/DS, or FFVI on the GBA.
@ProJared The interrupt lavos fight is actually HARDER than lategame Lavos. He is at his strongest moment due to the rituals and etc. Killing him in this moment is considered the hardmode true ending, with secret staff ending.
I don't know if you were aware of this, but you get the secret staff ending at the very beginning of the NG+. At Lucca's machine in Leene Square, you can access a secret time gate that takes you straight to Lavos, where you have to beat him by yourself, since you're the only character in your party at the time. Because of this handicap, I consider this battle much tougher than the interrupted battle.
Michael Holland Considering yu are alone, maybe, but you will have 99 Elixirs at the point. After so many NewGame+, that Lavos can barely hurt you, but the stat cap makes that no level in the whole game lets you survive more than 2 single target attacks from Lavos at Ocean Palace. I can tank aroung 7 attacks of lavos with crono solo before elixir. Now, the last part itself is indeed harder.
GaNopper is right. Midgame Lavos is the strongest enemy in the game. He does way more damage than Lavos at any other time. Also, at this point you do not have as many speed tabs and unless you have done every sidequest, you do not have items that prevent status ailments. Which sucks because Lavos will confuse you. It requires quite a bit of prep work and planning to beat mid game lavos the first time through.
I always hoped the accusations were false. I grew up with the whole normal boots team, but your videos introduced me to a more complex side of video games and now they take up a lot of my game time. I always catch myself humming your intro tune at home, school, work, pretty much anywhere. You're awesome.
I agree with literally all he said, chrono trigger is BEYOND a good game it is probably the best Rpg ever created, I'm so glad they made a remastered 3DS version for this game, I will play it over and over I haven't even beaten the game!
So I love Chrono Trigger. It is an amazing game, with awesome art and animations, the best story of any RPG ever(I WILL DEBATE YOU ON THIS) and even a fun combat system. But if there is one thing I can't stand about this game, it's the selection squeak. If you have played the game, ShinyStarriNite, you will understand.
Great video Jared! The only game I must've beaten over 6-7 times as a little kid and I even maxed out my main characters(Chrono, Ayla and Glenn). I grinded for weeks looking for every tiny bit of content just squeezing out every ounce of joy from the little cartridge. It's crazy how when i think of Chrono trigger its like my mind goes back in time and I remember exactly how i felt as a kid. A truly unforgettable game.
+Lucky Egg Definitely intentional since Cell was some produced experiment of a freak and Lavos is a freak from the depths of space. Toriyama tends to draw characters similar to other ones he draws a lot. Similarities will happen.
I really liked the story, but I could never really feel a connection to the weird job system. I would like to, but it's not as straightforward a jobsystem like in FFV, and its pretty covoluted, so I always just stuck with giving every character the genies their haircolour matched :D
Golden Sun has those Djins, remember? Every Character can be equipped with up to nine Djins. Every Character is basically tied to a certain Planet - Jupiter (yellow, Isaacs hair), Mars (red, Garrets hair), Venus (pruple, not Ivans hair but his robes), and Mercury (blue, Mias hair) - Giving Isaac for example only Jupiter Djins, as is default, he will automatically stay on the Knight-Class, with only Jupiter related Psinergy, while Mia for example, given only Mercury Djins, will be on the Priest-Path. You can however mix things up - give Garret for example three Jupiter and three Venus Djins, and he will become a Ninja. In the first game, this is still okay, because there are only classes with up to 2 different kinds of Djins. In the second game, it get's even worse, because there are classes only obtainable by giving a character a certain split between three kinds of Djin. For a character to become, for example, a beastlord, he has to be equipped with three Djins of every Planet that isn't his signature one (so Mia, who is Mercury, needs 3 Jupiter, 3 Mars, and 3 Venus). Now this is a cool concept, it's just never properly explained, and in the beginning, when you try switching around the Djins for the first time, you see that by switching Isaacs Jupiter and Garrets Mars Djin, that they are now the same class - Brutes. So mixing and matching is discouraged from the very beginning, unlike in for example Final Fantasy 5, where you get a tutorial on switching and mixing classes as soon as you obtain the first classes for your team.
Yeah well, like I said, the first time you have 2 Djins, it's probably a Jupiter and a Mars one, and switching them on Isaac and Garret gives both of them the same class, so I didn't try ever again until years later, and none of my friends did either :D
I much appreciate the spoiler warning and I will come back and finish watching your video once I finished Chrono trigger. I’ve heard a lot about it but you have convinced me to go and try it by your intricate explanation of the battle system. Thank you for your work. You’re a gentleman and a scholar.
One thing I wish you mentioned....HOW AMAZING THE MUSIC IS!!!! One of the absolute best soundtracks of the time, and of the genre, and still one of my absolute favorite soundtracks to this day. Something that cannot be overlooked. The rest of your review was beautiful, and I commend you for it. Keep on doing what you're doing!
Its all about the graphics, if you need to make lots of HD models, stages and shit and properly lip sync them with equally good voice acting which is probably from many takes, people make smaller stories which is sad and usually these short stories have no replayability. Anyway the graphics are just an excuse, game devs need to work less on a game with nothing but good graphics and more time into making something that you could actually have fun with for multiple playthroughs, which was something more important in the past too :(.
+Tetra Helix It's not about the graphics at all. Graphics actually are pretty important to a game's overall tone and immersion, as well as visual communication and literally everything you see on screen. Don't put the blame on graphics when they play an important role, when you probably should be putting the blame on the fact that developers only make games as a cashgrab. They make the games so short because they have so little time to make them, so many of them are made to be played pretty much once at $60 for the weekend, so you can still feel like paying $60 for the new game next month.
For awhile I've been advocating that Chrono Trigger should get another sequel and that Squeenix should just give up on the FF7 remake. I still maintain that Squeenix should give up on the FF7 remake, but my feelings have changed on a Trigger sequel. I'd hate for them to turn a perfect game into a cash cow.
+The Rape Face there is a sequel for chrono trigger called chrono cross. and is that what you think of sequels? you are so afraid of venturing into the dark that you don't wish for any improvement? yes the game is prefect but let it improve in at least soundtrack or graphics, we deserve another chrono trigger.
azzzanadra Lol Chrono Cross was barely a sequel. As for the sequel, I would love a *PROPER* sequel, but with what Square is right now, if it does happen, I'll probally just wish it never happened.
been rewatching jared's vids on auto-play today for the same reason everyone else is here right now, and i honestly forgot he ever talked about chrono trigger! i fell in love with this game VERY recently, finally playing it after saying i'd get around to it for ages so i could play it before watching chuggaaconroy's LP, and i fell head-over-heels in love with it and everything about it. perfect timing to remember this video exists!
"How long a game is Chrono Trigger?"
From 65 million BC to 2300 AD, of course.
yes
Til the end of time, actually.
And thus it is the longest game ever made. Who needs 60-80 hour PRGs when you have one that spans from the Stone Age to the far future?
Average playthrough: 65,002,300 years Fastest Speedrun Any%: 2 hours 48 minutes and 43 seconds

Perhaps he said something briefly, but I think ProJared failed to mention that Chrono Trigger has one of the greatest video game soundtracks ever.
+what? Well he did say "Doo, DO do. Do DO do. Do DO do. Do DODODO."
+noproblem728 lol, Of course you, it's only human to have different taste.
+what? He amazingly never mentioned it
I am actually really relief that those are false accusations. I just want ProJared go back reviewing my old fav games.
i want him playing Magic Arena... he is one of the few that can make a good narration of a magic the gathering game =3
It feels nice to be back UwU
I really want to see Holly get back into TH-cam, I miss her Pokemon vids
Just because he says they are false doesn't mean they are.
@@stoopidnerd9762 no, but evidence does.
the mother says "I want you to behave yourself today"
I'm pretty sure we all saw that as white noise on our first playthrough
I didnt. I take what my mother says seriously. Im a very responsible boy
As a really young kid, the desire to play Chrono Trigger was what motivated me to learn to read. It's been my all time favorite video game pretty much ever since. I still go back and replay it every few months to a year.
In all that time, I don't think I ever caught the significance of that line until I watched this video.
For sure, it was white noise to Jared
And how were we supposed to know that the things we did were considered bad behavior anyway? XD
I actually never gave this game a chance because I thought it was a game pumped FULL of nostalgia, but you've sold it to me. I may have to give it a go
+CreepsMcPasta Holy shit! Didnt knew you watch projared.
you should it's good as fuck.
Nah I just played it in March it's the best RPG I've played and one of greatest game I've ever played in life
+CreepsMcPasta people being nostalgic for it shouldn't be a detriment to people playing it; they're probably nostalgic for it because it's a good thing that they fondly remember, it's not like you "had to be there" to enjoy it since it's a game you can still play, haha
+CreepsMcPasta A lot of the time older games are overhyped and only good if you're being nostalgic, but sometimes older games are just legitimately great games. Chrono Trigger is the latter.
This game was so ahead of its time ;-)
Masterpiece.
+freddy m When it ever the PS1's time? Why does it always have to be 8-bit or 16-bit? That's boring.

So glad we got that Lavos situation handled 20 years ago...
Or was it 1020 years ago... damn time travel plots.
Chrono Trigger is one of my favourite games of all time.
I don't want a reboot, remake, sequel or prequel. It's perfect just the way it is.
That's what I'm talking about. So many things I love have gotten mediocre remakes this last 10+ yrs.
I'm find with all three of these options. Because each one is it's on thing.
@This Is What Awesome Looks Like you didn't like the remake of ff7
@Sean Shea I remake would be nice
@@Chad_Eldridge I still want it 😁. I don't care about the legacy. If someone doesn't like one of the vols or parts in a series. Just don't play it or watch it. I like all remakes in movies & games. As long as I'm entertain; that's all that matters. I'm fine with fan made stuff too. I WANT MORE OF THE SERIES

Actually, that's a lie. Lavos IS stronger when you first meet him compared to the next time you fight him. There are different stats.
Normal Lavos:
10,000 HP
127 Strength (or something like that)
Ocean Palace Lavos:
30,000 HP
180 Strength
They don't want you to win, but if you DO, it doesn't force a loss.
Maybe he's referring to the final phase of Lavos? It has 30000 HP too. Not sure about attack though.
I was looking for this. Also, defeating Ocean Palace Lavos gives the "hardest"/Development Team Ending.
I had to scroll far too long for this. up you go!
I know Jared was pouring on lots of praise for Chrono Trigger, but he didn't mention how great the music is. Yasunori Mitsuda turned out a masterful soundtrack and it is probably my favorite of any game I've ever played.
Chrono Trigger's soundtrack is absolutely my favorite ost ever
Frog's Theme and Magus' Theme are just so good, and showcase their character so well. Frog's is knightly and heroic while Magus' can stand as a boss battle theme or just show his power. There's so many others that are too good, but those 2 always stand out to me.
I can't fathom how he didn't gush over the music. It's astonishing.
This came up in my recommended. I'll gladly watch it again

The music from Chrono Trigger is amazing and some of Mitsuda's finest work.
Nice job using most of the music in the video. Props to finding a way to use Singing Mountain
+Cmckerracher You mean Yatsunori Mitsuda. Uematsu only did a handful of tracks to help out.
+Cmckerracher
World Revolution and Magus' Theme are my favorite tracks. Absolutely EPIC.
Yes both. I should know that since I wrote about it. But yes both are amazing artists here.
+ProJared He did so well with the music it practically MADE this game for me. Everything else is incredible, but Mitsuda's music is fantastic.
That they could make Chrono Trigger during the SNES period is nothing short of a marvel.
haha someone after my heart, CT and star ocean tss both great games. if i had a list of top rpgs it would be something like
1: the witcher 3
2: ff10
3: ff6
4: chrono trigger
5: star ocean the second story
6: lufia 2
7: legend of the dragoon
8: ff7
Something that should be corrected: Lavos isn't as strong at the Ocean Palace as he is at the end of the game.
He's _so much stronger._
Which makes sense from a lore perspective: hes being juiced up by Zeal as well as not having burnt up his power for millenia before making his appearance at the final battle.
Beating him at ocean palace gives the ending telling you that is the hardest ending in the game.
I have a streamer friend who actually 100% the game on that route on her first try! Something ive better you’ve NEVER freaking done, YOU TRAITOR
The length is a great point. I played it again recently and couldn't believe how fast it was moving . It reminds me of Mario Rpg in that it is completely packed full of content. Things are constantly moving
this and ff6 were the best masterpiece that square soft ever made imo.
Highly agreed
even kefka agree
I love ff6. In that game the bad guy actually wins. Kefka successfully destroys the world and becomes a god. A GOD. Killing him afterwords doesn't change the fact that the world is in ruins and most everyone is dead or insane or hungry or scared ...etc. Bad ass.
It's very bad ass. I'm wondering if they'll ever remake it with modern graphics and the like similar to what they're doing with FF7..
My favorite game and my second favorite game are Chrono Trigger and FF6 (tied with Super Metroid).

The "Parasite" Lavos is only the protective shell that harbors the true Lavos inside, always learning and adapting to new things.
agreed, I always liked this choice. Plus, the final form thing wasn't a cliche yet in the 90s
It's actually just Toriyama's trope, notice how the final form's of all DBZ villains are the smallest but the most powerful?
For me, the most mesmerizing thing about Lavos was the idea of Lavos. This final character was at least a decade ahead of its time. He wasn't just the stereotypical evil monster. They touched on some really heavy shit with this one...the forest scene in Lucca's side story where everyone's talking about fate and what/who put them on this journey? Their realization before the final battle about what they're actually fighting? They weren't making bad guys like this in the 90's
Even Broly?
Magus can use triple techniques, needs a certain item though.
i never saw them in action, but i'll replay the game in its entirety
Gems, right? I haven't figured out how to use them yet.
"A certain item"
I don't believe in miracles... but I believe in Chrono Triggers.

I have completed this game like twenty times or even more and i'm still playing it... one of the best games ever made ^-^/
+MinMinForTheWin I've seen him before...think it was something to do with FE music. But nowhere near everywhere, unless he just took over the internet or something.
***** Ah, how so?
***** Oh, really? I've played the series. What are your favorites?
If square can pull off vii they might have a chance at not butchering a CT remake I think.
I wandered too. I mostly wanted to see black omen in 3D
Szymon War that would be epic. So many areas that would be amazing in 3d. HD zeal :^)
This is lampshaded in the Dream Team ending-- they point out that the sprites are so detailed that they even have animated self-shadows and stuff. Cool.
I think it could be pulled off. Toriyama's art style made the transition to 3D well with the Dragon Quest games...I think it would be possible.
"You go there because that's when you heard Lavos was born." No, actually you go there for a rock.
No, Lavos arrived without anyone expecting it, and then he burrows deep into the ground, so there is no reason to return.
CliffJot Well,if we're going to get even more technical we don't even "return". We just get thrown into a portal and randomly found ourselves there. If memory serves correctly. A portal created when Lavos was summoned I believe.
That means we didn't go there because of Lavos
The games now on Steam - HOORAY
But its lazy port of the Mobile version - BOO
I'll stick with my DS copy
How much?
DS is pretty much the definitive edition of this game, i still own the original SNES cartridge and the DS one as well.
I love that game unconditionally for it being one of my first
+GreenTengu97 shining force is the game that got me into games. i remember being 5 years old and never beating able to beat chaos.
Same here. Love that game. Though I sucked at it when I was a kid and only beat it the first time in 8th grade. But yeah. Shining Force is probably my favorite game of all time.
+GreenTengu97 just in case you dont know, there is a GBA port of shining force that is vastly superior to the genesis version.
We will learn this for sure after I'am Setsuna comes on.Which is pretty soon.
Already did, actually. Reviews are lukewarm. Eh, didn't stop me from preorder ing though.
Are they as lukewarm as Mighty No. 9's? Because that would really suck.
Rest in peace, Akira Toriyama.

@@edvance1030 Far from it.
Kinda sad you didn't mention the "But... the future refused to change." scene. That scene is just so powerful.
My favorite game of all time. I mowed so many lawns that year so I could buy it at launch. I'm kind of glad there won't be a new Chrono game. Modern Square-Enix would just screw it up.
+Mr. Horseshoe Modern Square-Enix made Bravely Default a great RPG, so they don't always screw it up
+Caio but they screw up their old stuff
like final fantasy and supreme commander
+Caio
Bravely Default was made by three companies and Square was one of them.
I wonder if anyone ever had a traumatic experience with this game. If there's anyone out there like that, I bet this video left them

short rpgs like this are great. Suikoden 1 and 2 are also great rpgs that are relatively short. What I love about them is that every moment of the game feels interesting and purposeful. Unlike many RPG's that are filled with uninspiring filler and fluff just to pad the length
My oh my, it's rare to see a current comment that is not roasting pro jared because of his shitty behaivor.
assholemon ikr? It's a breath of fresh air. And i like it.

Great review but mate... THE SOUNDTRACK! Definitely one of the best ones in gaming history and you left it out of your review o.0

I honestly didn’t know about your channel until the controversy, heard people were unsubscribing in droves. I immediately looked up your channel and subscribed just to go against the grain; I’m deeply saddened by how easily people can turn on someone based on near hearsay.
One of my favorite games EVER MADE. I wish I could have fought the final boss. I lost all my save data. :(
Jared's comeback tour on full force!
It's on the mobile app store. That's how I played it
Played Chrono Trigger several times now. The perfect RPG. Even to this day.
No game is perfect. But if one can be called such, it might as well be Chrono Trigger.
I enjoy almost all of Jared's content, but this is probably my favorite review.
This game had so much substance and heart. Beautifully crafted.
Resurrection arc fellas, here doing my part with nice comments
No...no arcs...you only get the chrono trigger
Definitely one of the best character resurrections that I’ve seen in fictional storytelling. I love how important Chrono’s death is in the events of history and how you don’t resurrection him, but rather save him and swap him with a clone, ensuring that his death still happens and doesn’t wreck the timeline.
8 years later...you still have the best CT review I've ever seen or read. I wish you made more game reviews!
Gets me pumped every time
Wait, no mention of the incredible, timeless, masterpiece soundtrack? This is the best music I have ever heard in any game
I remember renting CT from Blockbuster when it was new every weekend. I never would have imagined that CT, FF IV and VI would set the bar so high. Every time I play it, I feel like I'm an eight year old all over again.
I'm back here after your video talking about the shit show. Doing what I can o/
This video right here is what got me to play Chrono Trigger.
Thank you, Jared.
I'm actually doing that right now for Glenn.
R-66Y for Robo, Janus for Magus, etcetera.
I like Lucca, in fact, I like all party members.
Because Marle is the stereotype of the hot blonde in school we all admired, while Lucca is the stereotype of the girls that actually talked to us back then. That's it...
@@soulreaper1461 wow...
guess you have some baggage
Hello, me... back for the nth time 😂❤
The music in this game is amazing
Denzy I was always a great fan of the music in this game. It is so well crafted and emotionally charged, many would say expressive, and does its job very well. I still get chills when I hear selections from it.
I took literally 20 minutes sitting down with my earphones, entering the gaurdia castle in truce canyon, listening to that fucking soundtrack
I remember playing this on an emulator as a kid at my grandparents basement. True masterpiece and the music. I'm surprised you didn't talk much about some of the character themes (especially Frog). Anyways, big fan keep up the good work!
A. I never realized Akira Toriyama was the graphical artist for the game, but it's so obvious now, and
My marathon of rewatching, liking, and commenting on every Jared video continues. Video 27
I guess the fact that Square won't make another game made him Chrono "Triggered"
Thank god. I hope they never make another Chrono Trigger game. one was enough. Fuck this game
+OldGamesSuck Hello, clear bias. How's your day?
+OldGamesSuck I'm sorry Mr. Butthurt but how hurt in the ass are you?
There was Chrono Cross, which was pretty good.
Guys
It's a joke
Look at his name
Jesus
Man, I can't believe you didn't say anything about the incredible music in the game. Even just hearing the clips played in the video gave me goosebumps as it brought me back to some of those epic moments in the game. So many of the tracks perfectly suit the scenes they're played in and they really help to convey the great sense of adventure in the game. It's definitely one of my favorite video game soundtracks of all time.
Omg... I've never realized I could beat the game without saving Crono. Mind = Blown!
I don't know how you didn't know that.
Yeah, you can. I never do, but you can.
Not saving Crono gives a variation ending just like using the Epoch to smash through Lavos' shell does.
yeah, its kind of sad, Marle sitting by herself by a tree in the dead Crono ending.
My favorites are Pokemon Sapphire, Emerald, Diamond, Platinum, White, Black 2, X, and Alpha Sapphire. What are these others you speak of?
Calebite Really? I love Pokemon, but try to have a little more variety.
+Midknight Oh yeah, there's also the Mario RPGs. Thanks for reminding me. XD
I'm not even gonna bother anymore.
***** Hey look it's my boy! Remember me? I'm Shipping Lord.
I don't think I would trust Square to make another Chronotrigger anymore...
Yes. This. Sequels are so terrible that I'm glad this masterpiece stands alone... as long as we can forget about ChronoCross.
was cronocross any good? gameplay wise and story wise
I enjoyed it. It got mixed reviews; you'd either love it or hate it.
im looking for a more specific answer
There isn't one. You'll either love it or hate it.
You know one day Square will remake this. And it will be terrible. :3
Andy Semple Lol, ouch.
They already did. There's a ds version (or 3ds I can't remember) and a version on the app store.
Aidan Smith
Those aren't remakes.
Are they not? Huh.
One of my favorite games of all time! Love you, ProJared!
Also this is a cool birthday present, thanks dude!
Happy Birthday!
Happy Birth Day!
Feliz Navidad!
+Joldsaway hahahahahaha
I always hoped the accusations were false. I grew up with the whole normal boots team, but your videos introduced me to a more complex side of video games and now they take up a lot of my game time. I always catch myself humming your intro tune at home, school, work, pretty much anywhere. You're awesome.
Also, make more final fantasy reviews so i know which ones to avoid. I like your reviews of RPGs the most.
I bought Chrono Trigger about a week ago and I'm absolutely loving it
I agree with literally all he said, chrono trigger is BEYOND a good game it is probably the best Rpg ever created, I'm so glad they made a remastered 3DS version for this game, I will play it over and over I haven't even beaten the game!
They didn't remaster it all they do is add content and it's on the DS not the 3DS.
+Max McClintock it's on the 3DS
+Kane Bat You can play DS games on the 3DS I know.
+Max McClintock This person has wrong information just ignore them
+Bill Cipher I can't tell if you're talking to me or Kane.
I'm so happy I was able to get a copy of Chrono Trigger for my DS :D
Me too, I just found a pre-owned copy of it yesterday and finally bought it :D
So I love Chrono Trigger. It is an amazing game, with awesome art and animations, the best story of any RPG ever(I WILL DEBATE YOU ON THIS) and even a fun combat system. But if there is one thing I can't stand about this game, it's the selection squeak.
If you have played the game, ShinyStarriNite, you will understand.
+Zachary Polek Is it? I got it at a local game store during a pretty rough patch in my life, set me back around 30 bucks
Me too! But life, work, responsability is in my way :(
Didnt got that far yet, but i start to liking it :)
I have the original SNES version and I kept the box, manual, the posters and even the cartridge cover. That makes it worth about $200.
Only beaten it 6-7 times? You mean you haven't gotten every ending?
I love how much Lavos' second battle looks like Cell.
It might be intentional, given how much the main character looks like Gohan.
+Lucky Egg Definitely intentional since Cell was some produced experiment of a freak and Lavos is a freak from the depths of space. Toriyama tends to draw characters similar to other ones he draws a lot. Similarities will happen.
Maybe because akira toriyama was involved in this...
+lexzeyfercronus that is exactly the reason. =) loved his art used in the game. It was perfect for it.
+Lucky Egg and magnus is piccolo frog is future trunks shrono is goku and krillin is dead :D
You should do a review on one or all of the Golden Sun games! those were my favorites growing up, and still to this day.
I really liked the story, but I could never really feel a connection to the weird job system. I would like to, but it's not as straightforward a jobsystem like in FFV, and its pretty covoluted, so I always just stuck with giving every character the genies their haircolour matched :D
Martina Deml what?
Really? I knew it was never really explained in the first one but I didn't think it was discouraged. I did it anyway!
Back in the day 15hours rpg was short. Now a 7 hours games is considered long by developper.
+Milenos LOL TRUE!!
Short attention spans nowadays, and --- hey look,a butterfly!
+Milenos I think you misspelled cinematic.
13:45
That sound can give a 5 year-old nightmares.
I clicked this and it took me to a Papa John's ad
For awhile I've been advocating that Chrono Trigger should get another sequel and that Squeenix should just give up on the FF7 remake. I still maintain that Squeenix should give up on the FF7 remake, but my feelings have changed on a Trigger sequel. I'd hate for them to turn a perfect game into a cash cow.
***** I would like more then anything to see Lavos finally die however.
Exactly. I don't want my beautiful Chrono Trigger be turned into a yearly action rpg that isn't anything like it.
Yeah, Chrono Cross was closer to a sequel to games like Suikoden than it was to Chrono Trigger.
been rewatching jared's vids on auto-play today for the same reason everyone else is here right now, and i honestly forgot he ever talked about chrono trigger! i fell in love with this game VERY recently, finally playing it after saying i'd get around to it for ages so i could play it before watching chuggaaconroy's LP, and i fell head-over-heels in love with it and everything about it. perfect timing to remember this video exists!
