    I love being from the UK. Having a UK passport makes travel so easy and having a UK driving license makes driving overseas possible. Lucky to have been born there.

    And one more thing,, You better read the fine print on your health travel insurance ,, because some insurance company's ,, say you need a bike licence from your own country and be able to ride more than a 50cc,,, some say you need a licence from the country you are riding in as mine does,, eg Thailand,,, and don't think you are covered from what that lady said ,, 30,000 baht will only cover some bandage's and some pills,, at the hospital if you fall off,,that is only $1000,, if you hit someone be prepared to pay,, if you have a big crash then watch out,, as my friend did,, we were only in the country for 4 hours and he crashed,, we thought insurance would cover it but no,, look at the fine print,,, he spent one month in hospital which cost $20,000 australian ,,, had a gaurd at the door of his hospital room until the money was pay'd ,, then he needed a medi vac plane to fly him to new zealand which cost another $50,000,, lucky there was a nice person in new zealand how donated the $50'000,, so a quick trip around thailand could break the family's bank,, so please read the fine print ask questions , and pay for top cover,, it will be cheaper in the long run if you need it,,

      Great points. You get in trouble in Thailand, you usually have to pay your own way out. Good in some ways, bad in others.

    Damn, 50 euro a month for a bike rental.
    Tha is insane :o
    So 200 baht fine for no license?
    That's like 5 euro. And they let you continue driving? Wow.

    Great advice.👍 A lot details that are very useful to know about Chaing Mai. It's all good. 😉✔💜✔✌😉 You might as well get a bike licence it's cheaper than all those finds. That was a smart move to get your ticket signed and validated the laminate it. Clever Kid.

    Was last in Chiang Mai a few weeks ago. Got stopped 6 times in 7 days, I don't have an international licence as I live in Malaysia so getting one is a right pain in the ass. The police are rampant now although I managed to get away with only being fined once a few others times they wanted to, but I kept arguing until they shooed me away. I will only hire one next time for the ride to Pai etc, but wont ride around the city. My UK licence also allows me to Drive cars and ride any size Bike, but at the stops that wanted me to pay were showing me a scrappy piece of paper that was a copy of an international licence. The time I did get fined it cost me 500 baht and I bit his hand off at that as he started at 2000. I asked for a receipt but of course was shooed away without one. I'll be back in March and will instead be hiring a car.

      It's a nightmare. I would suggest you get an international driving permit from the UK. You can order it online for about £10. That with your license, you won't have any problems.

    I am a regular visitor to Chiang Mai and rent scooters every time . I get stopped by police on average every 3 days . They tend to target foreigners as there is a high probability of them not being Thai licensed , or lacking helmets . But certain areas are police hotspots and that is particularly so on the inner moat road . Outside the middle of town the police are less active .
    I believe getting a Thai license is dependent on what visa you have . 30 day visa free entry stamp is not enough .

      @brett_dev  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Steve Rhodes dude I know it's a nightmare. I'd recommend anyone coming to Thailand obtain an international driving permit to accompany their drivers license. The cops accept this. Otherwise, you'll be paying 200 baht fines, regularly.

    Brett, very good video, thanks. It seems to me however, that 30k Baht would not cover much medical if one was injured in an accident. I'm sure a broken bone or dislocated joint would cost much more than that at hospital.

    Oops I watched the video again and caught this time that she said long term is one month. Sorry for the redundant question. Brett, it would be interesting to see the bike that you ride.

  • @MrAussie44
    @MrAussie44 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    to get a license ,, you need have a international license then go to the licence place and then you have to watch a video and do the driving test or riding test,, also because you are staying there you need proof of lease from landlord ,, if you don't have a licence you need proof of lease of where you are staying also have to go to immigration to get forms stamped then take it to licence station,, then sit all the tests,, if you fail the written they may let you do it again,, not in phuket you will have to come back the next day,, and most won't let you do it all in one day so plan 2 days.. And also can not get a Thai licence if on a tourist visa,, well you can if you know the right people,,

    • @brett_dev
      @brett_dev  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great info Sean, thanks for the comment. I know quite a few people on tourist visas with Thai licenses, generally it isn't that hard to get around things :)

    Hey Brett, great video mate. After how long you've been in Thailand, any reason you haven't bought your own bike?

    • @brett_dev
      @brett_dev  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      A couple of years Jimmy. I do own one bike. I like to rent the other because it's easier to change to a new or different model when I get bored.

      Do you have any suggestions of where to buy a scooter?

    • @brett_dev
      @brett_dev  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      JimmyPrice808 kaidee.com if you want to buy privately. Its a Thai site but load it in chrome and it will auto translate to English. There are also some decent large dealers in Chiang mai. I'll find the names out and get back to you.

      Great ill check it out. Awesome man, that'd be great. Im also thinking about buying a motorbike as opposed to a scooter, if you can think of any dealers or ways to buy privately

    If you have a normal UK license can you drive bigger than 50cc bikes?

    • @brett_dev

      Yes, I've never seen a 50cc bike in Thailand. They start at about 110.

    Hi, thanks for this video
    Question - If the bikes are insured for medial but not insured for damage or collision... How do you cover the risk of getting into an accident damaging your own bike and the damage to other vehicles?.... Its gonna be a bad out if i get into an accident or drop the bike and end up with tens of thousands of baht i am responsible for in damage to vehicles? ..... What do you do to cover yourself?

    • @brett_dev
      @brett_dev  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Like Lesley said you can take out a premium to cover yourself for this, but otherwise, your paying for any damage you cause.

    Hi Brett what would be your suggestion to a graphic designer/photographer if want to move to chiangmai for a bit and freelance ? Where should i look for to network in Chiangmai?

    • @brett_dev
      @brett_dev  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Azlif Mohamed I recently interviewed my friend who is a photographer, there is some good info here th-cam.com/video/hDy0z319xOc/w-d-xo.html I would recommend you start looking online (I've made other videos about this). Thailand is not a good place to come if you want to work for local business. Local wages are very low and it'd be next to impossible for you to get employed over a Thai national. PM me on Facebook /brettthedev I may be able to suggest something more specific...
