Many players can curl a shot over and around a wall but it's difficult to put pace on the shot. If you hit the ball with power then it tends to fly over the cross bar. So the goalie will have felt confident that any shot that comes over the wall, he will be able to move quickly enough to save it. However Messi has great technique in combining power with accuracy.
