The Top 10 Virtual Console Games

- The plan was to make a video detailing what people generally believe to be the best games available on the Virtual Console. I polled the users on vc-forums.com and they nominated and voted for each game seen in this top 10 list. They could nominate any games they wanted, as long as it was available on the North American Virtual Console before June 8th, 2009 (when the polling started). For further details on the rules of the voting and who voted for what, see these links:
www.vc-forums.com/top-10-vc-ga...
www.vc-forums.com/top-10-vc-ga...
For practical purposes, here are the games in the vid, with their price points from the Wii Shop Channel:
Super Mario Bros. 3 - 500 Wii Points
Shining Force - 800 Wii Points
Super Mario 64 - 1000 Wii Points
Paper Mario - 1000 Wii Points
ActRaiser - 800 Wii Points
Mega Man 2 - 500 Wii Points
Super Mario World - 800 Wii Points
The Legend of Zelda: ALTTP - 800 Wii Points
Secret of Mana - 800 Wii Points
The Legend of Zelda: OOT - 1000 Wii Points

Great job on this video, Tides! It was really well made and put together, I also love how you've included in comments from members.
Keep it up!
Great Vid dude definatley helped me choose which games to buy :)
This video was done really well. Great job.
This is a great list! Thanks!
Nice List Matt :D
Nice to see VC-Forums getting some publisity.
awesome video very in-depth information on each title on top of that! so you have earned my subb! ;)
Really nice video man keep it up ^.^
Great review
That's what I love about the VC. You can play those old childhood titles that you may not have played in ages or pick up titles that you always wanted but never got around to getting. Since I'm a bit younger, I'm more of the latter category. :)
This charming Top 10 list is a charming ode to charming retro games.
Great list. Just got a wii, the VC was one of my biggest selling points. SO joining this forum, if it still exists.
Good video, love the commentary, can you adjust the aspect ratio for the VC games?
@MattNOYB Great review. I am going to get a Wii for the regular Wii disc based games, and Wii VC classic games and etc.
It'd be interesting to take a new vote and see if things change
Thanks! I really do want to do this, but I just need to find a good time to do it.
legend of zelda ooc my first zelda game i played been years thank you for sharing that with me i have been trying o figure out what one i was without its name for years now thank you
great video (:
@bencheshire Yup, it definitely still exists considering I visit just about everyday. It's a small community of people, but I still hope to see you there!
Thanks!
@CodyT3212 In order to get any games from the Wii Shop Channel, you need to have your Wii connected to the internet. Also, in order to receive updates for any downloaded games (which is very, very uncommon) you also need to be connected.
@brick0rockwell Just as Deivion/Demon said, it's the GBA version. Nintendo was obsessed with adding voices for all its GBA ports back then (like the Mario games). That's why you can hear Link yell in this video; his Ocarina voice was inserted into the game.
Enjoyed the efficient way you went through the list. Informative too. One critique, don't pronounce acronyms as words. "S.N.E.S.," not "s-ness."
Im about to buy a wii but i need help understanding something: Do you have to have your Wii hooked up for internet activity to access the wii shop? if not i dont see how the games are updated.
@calamaty Yeah, I'm aware of the ALTTP typo. I should add in an annotation to fix that. And as for Super Mario 64: everywhere I look says September 26th, 1996, which is also the release date of the N64, so it makes sense. Perhaps you're mistaken?
thank you very much I played shining force when I was a kid and didn't even know it's name and thanks to you I do now
@NPStudios303 That's weird, I've never heard of that before. What exactly do you mean by "won't let me get any further"? Does the screen freeze and you have to restart?
I never could understand why I get bored of some new games but zelda never dies. I've beaten it a billion times now but I still have the urge to play it.
@KidPrince31 The screen saying to use a classic controller does seem to appear on many games (I think the SNES and N64 only?), even though you can use the Gamecube controller instead.
@szederbu How long have you been trying to get in? It's never down for too long so it should be back up within a day.
@NPStudios303 Not sure I can help you, sadly. You could go over to vc-forums . com where there are lots of people who use the VC a lot so they might know about this. Your other option would be contacting Nintendo directly I guess.
It wasn't on the VC at the time the votes for this video were being tallied.
Chrono Trigger didn't come out on the VC until May 2011 and this video was made in August 2009 with voting even earlier. So while Chrono Trigger might make it in a re-vote, it couldn't when this was made.
I'm surprised about it not being there too. I'm sure if it was a top 11 or 12 it would be there, but there simply weren't enough votes for it.
great video dude. i think ima get mega man. cuz megaman 9 was simply amazing. it made me a megaman fan. i cant belive the NES could make sux freakin awesome music.
@ApharmdStriker It's not that it's too powerful, but rather that it would take up way too much room on the flash drive/SD card.
@maskedhero21 Yes, it does! The Xbox 360 and PS3 also have Sonic 1 & 2 available in several forms, including the awesome Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection (if you are considering those systems too).
@SuperBored5 That "wasn't too hard" comment was from the user Kurachi, not me. I personally thought OOT had some really hard parts, namely the Water Temple. For years I was stuck because I thought my game was glitched, when I was in reality just clueless for what to do next. Talk about a hard temple. >_
That's right. To play Ocarina of Time on the Wii, you need either a Classic Controller or a Gamecube controller (if you have a Wii that has Gamecube controller slots).
Time to put up Castlevania Dracula X: Rondo of Blood up there! and no Donkey Kong Country?
@juantg2003 Majora's Mask wasn't out at the time voting was taken for this video. Also, while I'd normally say that I was simply quoting when I said Super Mario RPG was overrated, I do actually agree with that. I really see nothing about it that I can prefer over Paper Mario, although maybe I just need to give it another shot.
oh and building on JustinScot18's point. Can yo make another top 10 video for this because a lot of new vc games have been released since then
Oh jeez, that's hard to say. I'd need to have everybody vote again. It'd be hard to imagine it wouldn't end up somewhere on the top 10 considering how popular it is, but I also doubt it could get higher than ALTTP or OoT.
Yeah, I might do a follow-up video excluding all Nintendo-made games or something similar.
@demillara92310 Yes. I've never done it personally, but apparently if you get Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles off the VC, you can virtually do the lock-on thing to enable Sonic 3 & Knuckles.
@pulsarcolosal You can use the Wiimote for all Virtual Console games except for Super NES games, N64 games, and some Genesis and Neo Geo games.
@highoffasharpies The Gamecube controller's button setup on the game is not what most would consider an ideal way to play Super Mario World. However, are you sure the Classic Controller has an odd setup? I was pretty sure it had the same setup as the SNES controller had.
@MarioKartWii100 Isn't there a 2 player option at the menu or something? Maybe it only appears if two controllers are on/plugged in.
As it says in the rop right corner of the vid when the footage starts, it's the GBA version that's shown.
Please read the description. I stated these games were chosen via a poll taken on a website (so, I didn't choose which games won). Also, Arcade and Commodore 64 titles were not yet on the North American Virtual Console at the time this video was being made.
That's a pretty big question there! It'd be hard to tell you in just a TH-cam comment but basically if you have editing software like Windows Movie Maker or Pinnacle Studio and you have a camera or a capturing device, you should be able to make a video like this one simply enough.
@ioport This is not my personal list. It compiled from many votes, of which I was just one person. It just so happened that the final list mainly has Nintendo console games. And I want to point out that Shining Force is a Genesis game so the Genesis actually is here.
If you like any of the 3D Zeldas, I definitely recommend LOZ:MM. It's different than the others because of a pseudo-time limit but I'd say it's more likely you'd like it than not like it.
@Nintendoggy That's what 50hz does. It runs the games slower than they originally were in Japan/North America unless properly optimized by the developers.
@51abe Well, they were both made by Square during the SNES days so it's not too surprising that they look similar.
@HACKERSUCK12121212 Yeah, I love that there's going to be a VC for the 3DS. I hope they don't overprice those GB and GBC games... It should also be interesting to see the select titles they are going to upload with 3D effects. Hopefully they aren't much more pricey than the standard editions.
@WatchesVideosOnUtube I wondered the same thing. I'm guessing it was since I took this poll only about a week after it came out on the VC, and some people might not have gotten a chance to try it yet. I'm sure if I took another poll, Majora's Mask would be more of a contender than before.
@kimflodin Slowed down music? Is the game otherwise functional? I don't know exactly how it works as I don't live in Europe, but are you sure it's not just a 50hz game running at, well, 50hz? I don't believe games were optimized in the NES days so every game will sound slowed down compared to North American versions. (exceptions are Import games like Bio Miracle Bokutte Upa).
@StewieGriffin56 I know this. I've been told it about this video and my Wii one a few times. The next time I make a Top 10 (which keeps getting delayed) this is something I hope will be improved.
cant wait to get OoT on 3DS i played it on N64 and i cant wait 2 see the greatness in 3D!!
i know u can use the gamecube controller but is there a pop up screen that says u have to plug up the classic controler before playing?
Yup, I have SUGC. However, if all you have is a Wii and no 360 or PS3, then your only option is really getting the Genesis games you want on the VC.
It probably has something to do with the N64 Expansion Pak not emulated and maybe because of RARE, LTD but then again the DKC games were on VC.
@MattNOYB Have you Played Kirby Super Star for VC 'cause it is like my favorite Kirby Game.
@rzabladex I was shocked that those were missing, as well as Donkey Kong Country, Sonic, Chrono Trigger, and Castlevania. There were like 5 Mario games though! lol
@TheKingEatsDinner *ahem* *points to audio track of video*
"In a tie for sixth place..."
The games were originally made for standard resolution but if your Wii is set for widescreen, it will stretch the games to fit your set-up. I personally play this way (don't let the video fool you) and don't have any problems with it personally but I know some people can't stand the stretched out images.
@MattNOYB majoras mask is a really good game though. i mean, its main quest is shorter than ocarinas, but it such a cool concept. because everything changes each day. there are 3 days. and if you help someone on the third day, than rewind time, that person wont be saved. the game teachers you that no matter how hard you try, not everyone can be saved. also, its really cool how what you do effect other people. like you steal the mail mans mail, then someone execpting something wont get it day 2.
@MattNOYB Well, when I walk out of the house, a small menu pops up asking me if I want to continue game or save and quit. Save and quit does exactly what it says but continue game doesn't do anything. it still gets stuck on the menu. I swear, i'm not pressing any buttons, it does it every time. (I'm using a GameCube controller if that makes a difference.)
@JVGM98 It wasn't on the Virtual Console at the time voting for this video was happening.
@oldwizardguy I might try to make one before the Wii U comes out. We'll see. I need to still finish up my Top 10 Gamecube one I started like 2 years ago. >_
@MegaGamer9900 I'm guessing we'll see Gamecube games on the Wii 2's VC. (or whatever they call the next Nintendo system)
I didn't know you could kill the Foot Ball Player in Super Mario World.
I'd put for my top three:
3. Ocarina of Time
2. Chrono Trigger
1. Final Fantasy VI (III)
@xHAZELRAHx Not sure what to tell you on the used front. I try to avoid used consoles though since I personally feel there's a bit too much risk involved. As for the Wii internal memory, you will probably need an SD card if you plan on buying more than a couple of VC games.
@achievement84 Great games on the other VC systems? A few examples of games I know/have heard are great: the Metal Slug games on Neo Geo, the Last Ninja games on C64, the Sonic games on the Genesis, the Streets of Rage games on the Genesis, the Samurai Shodown games on Neo Geo, the Fantasy Zone games on the Master System, the Bonk games on the Turbografx-16, & Gate of Thunder on the TG-16. There should be something in here that appeals to you.
@ThePokekid78 Are you planning on only using the 500 or are you going to add more? I'd say get Super Mario Bros. 3 probably if you only have the 500. If you're adding points, Chrono Trigger is never a bad buy, and Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time, and Majora's Mask are all worthy Zeldas to try out.
the gba version of smw was the first video game I ever Played, and is still very fun
Yeah, I'd never faced that boss before and I was playing on a black and white screen due to how I was recording things. It was kind of hard to be good. XD
So what games would you use to replace stuff like Mario Bros. 3?
I got legend of Zelda a link to the past on VC but it won't work properly. When i walk out the house at the beginning of the game, it stops and won't let me get any further.
@Itchyweed Yup, I'm Tides of Chaos from the vc-forums. What's your name there?
It wasn't out on VC when this video was made
@gamerpuppeteer I have no idea why they don't put Donkey Kong 64 up, as it should not be too hard to replace that Jet Pac game with something else. For some reason, all of the N64 games always seem to take way too long.
@LOLJKSTUDIO Are you looking at exclusively 600 point NES games, or any NES games? Looking at your YT channel, it seems you already have all the good 600 point NES games. I'm guessing you may enjoy Castlevania, Mega Man 1 or 4, Ninja Gaiden 1 or 3, Final Fantasy, StarTropics, or River City Ransom. You will probably want to watch some videos of these games to make sure since I pulled a few of these out of thin air and you may not necessarily enjoy them.
@MrTestNTune By the way, did you alread play Yoshi's Story? I will download this game, but some people tell this game is wesome, some tell it's boring...
thanks
@calamaty Hm..you may be right. It's confusing since some sources say the 26th (like Wikipedia & GameFAQs), while other sources, more so videos and people, seem to say the 29th.
Naow help me. this one could be difficult as this involves a Wiiware game with DLC. and three VC. games. i want Mega Man 10, but my bro wants SM 64, SSB, and MK64. wat do u recommend?
Do all of the v.c. games still have all of the original glitches n junk?
This needs more views. :l
@supersonickid3 wow dud did you really have to buy it twice? is it that good?
I've added to the description a link to Nintendo's official website with all available Virtual Console games, including videos and pricing information.
Aw shoot, you're right. I watched this thing a million times before putting it up so I should have caught that. Oh well, it's only a minor mistake. The title is correct in the details to the right.
@hermosapeach That's right. Every game is tied to one Wii Shop Channel Account for unlimited re-downloads, at least, as of writing this.
@rzabladex Final Fantasy III was not on the Virtual Console when this was made. And, I was just as surprised as you that Super Metroid did not make the list
@GamerLink5 You don't like Super Mario Bros. 3? Or Shining Force?
In Ocarina of Time what was that item that he had I know he had on the left the bombs and on the right the ocarina but what was that item on the bottom I don't recognize it even though I played ocarina this summer
The water temple... THE WATER TEMPLE!!!!! *convulses from the pure horror*
@ThePokekid78 If you have a 3DS or are planning on getting one, you might want to buy Lylat Wars and Ocarina on that. Otherwise, I would probably go with that option personally, since I love all three of those games. A Link to the Past I own on GBA, Chrono Trigger I own on the DS, and Super Mario World I own on the GBA, but I personally never got into any of them much, although many people love all of them. No matter which option you go with, you really should try all of these eventually.
What do you mean? Streets of Rage isn't in the top 10. If you mean the picture of the title screen in the vid, that's just to help emphasize what the Virtual Console is.
