    A happy 20th Anniversary to Windows XP's retail release! There will be a proper video to celebrate coming soon. In the meantime, let's explore this fan-made XP simulator for the Nintendo DS! Also, be sure to check out my unboxing of the Japan-exclusive Windows 20th Anniversary Edition of XP that I published back in August! th-cam.com/video/YDaPCZ9Ml9g/w-d-xo.html

    • @muellerhans

      @@Htiy Yeah but instead of just saying that he is glad that he found out where the microSD reader is from, he mentioned that he had no idea where it came from and kept it just in case it was needed again. Which kind of implies that he might have thrown it away it if he knew where it came from and that this adapter is not really necessary nor special. It seems like that the person did not really know what a microSD card reader is (microSD card reader is printed on the reader btw).
      And there are people that just throw away stuff they don't find useful anymore. I wrote my comment to prevent some future ewaste (even if it is not the adapter but something else).

    Thanks for covering this, let alone as a stand-in for an XP anniversary video.
    Just as a side note, the homebrew doesn't use the generated save file at all.
    That's just what the R4 menu defaults to asking for any application.
    Later versions and alternative menus would detect homebrew as such and skip that prompt, since the rare homebrew that would want to save something would just use the actual SD filesystem instead. (Which is especially useful when it comes to emulators and savestates.)

    I'm guessing how the bee movie script crashed the notepad application, is because it was trying to load the whole thing into memory and a buffer overflow occurred, possibly overflowing into a non-data area, such as the notepad program or display memory, thus corrupting it.
    This is a common problem in notepad programs, where they just try to shove the whole thing into memory (i.e. default notepad in Windows does this, and ends in a memory overflow error if the filesize is too large). A better way is to load one chunk at a time into a buffer (such as 512 bytes of data), which would be the viewing area. Then when you scroll, it loads the next chunk into the same memory area, therefore making indefinite file sizes possible (I think notepad++ does this. Try loading a massive file, even multiple MB, and it's almost instantaneous).

      I don’t think it crashed since it’s probably not a separate application from the rest of it and everything still worked and minesweeper probably reloaded everything
      Looks like it just overwrote a ton of non essential ram

    I just found out about the retail release date yesterday, and I was going to make a video about it, but my Windows XP computer is at my house and I'm at my college dorm right now watching this video. I remember Windows XP when I was little. My mom had a computer that I used to play Blue's Clues games on and it was a Windows XP computer. My first system personally was Windows Vista. But I think Windows XP was one of the most memorable systems that us 2000s kids will never forget.

    WintenDoS does that weird glitchiness because it's maxing out the amount of memory on the console. It's a problem we ran into with the MENUdo project while making themes for it, if the images were too big, or if we put too many options/animations in one page of it, we'd max out the RAM and get the same crash behavior.
    Very sad that we never got to release a full version of MENUdo, the web backend was feature complete and did work, I believe the source code was put up for download, and has variables to allow custom servers, but I have been lazy and haven't tried to fix it..

    • @SlavTiger

      What if it we used in conjunction with the somewhat rare ds memory expander card?

    • @ShadowEO
      @ShadowEO 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SlavTiger unfortunately, the card doesn't inherently add to system memory, it needs the program to not only be aware of it's existence but made to use it iirc (it's been a while since I've done any research into the GBA RAM cart).

    • @SlavTiger
      @SlavTiger 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ShadowEO but with some tweaks that feature could be added

    • @ShadowEO
      @ShadowEO 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SlavTiger potentially, if the source is still available, it may also be a number of other factors, but that's the one that sticks out to me as the most likely. At this point though, it would likely be more worthwhile to update it for DSi/3DS support so it makes use of the expanded memory in those consoles, but as you see in the videos, these ended up being pretty much tech demos.

    It's funny how you called Moonshell the MP3/Audio player because it resembles a Desktop OS miles ahead of the WintenDoS stuff you showed lol. Like seriously you should look into it, cause it's straight up almost its own OS replacement for the DS and you can do much more than listening to audio. It also supports skins so if you apply a Windows XP skin (or maybe just not haha, the default skin is a lot better) it will come a lot closer to Windows XP than the stuff you showed off in this video to be honest.

    What is it with the Crimson and Black DS Lites, those particular ones always crack, I've had several of them and they all developed a hinge crack, the current one I use is Ice Blue, got it off eBay in 2015, it was clearly abused by kids before I got it, it had a screen protector on the bottom screen that was scratched to hell, so I'm surprised the hinge is holding up strong.

    My DS flashcart came with a USB microSD reader. Or should I say, *inside* of a USB microSD reader. I had to open the (oversized) shell of the card reader, and the cartridge was there next to the PCB. I suspect this was done as a way to sneak it past customs, as the content of the package was declared as a USB card reader.
