I always felt Eddie's guitar playing overshadowed Alex's drumming but it really shouldn't have done because Alex is one of the best drummer's in rock history yet he's so criminally underrated.
Some old family friends of ours are in a cover band, and they play this song. The drummer also sings it.. Which isn't the most absurd thing to think about until you get into the pre-chorus, where the timing gets goofy, and the feel of the drums, and the vocals is very different. Dude is crazy talented

You NEED to watch the video for "Panama". One of the greatest opening hard-driving guitar riffs from the 80's... no lead in, no intro... just an explosion of Eddie blasting through the speakers from the drop of the needle. A song about a car. One of their best rock songs in the David Lee Roth era.
Always so weird to see them here at their happiest just moments before the band implodes. Your joy watching this is something to behold. What an adorable human being.

Love Van Halen, both eras (Roth & Hagar). Another good live performance was "One Way to Rock" from their 1989 tour in Tokyo. It was a Hagar solo but Eddie put his own spin on it. So many good songs to check out for this band like "Hot For Teacher", "Panama", "I'll Wait", "Runnin With The Devil", Ain't Talkin Bout Love", "Unchained", "Mean Street", "Atomic Punk", "Dreams", "Poundcake", "Right Now", "Why Can't This Be Love", "When It's Love", "Judgement Day", & "Top Of The World" to name a few!

Their album 1984 was highly anticipated. Back in the day there were release dates of albums. I know they still do it, but it doesn’t compare to the old days. By this time Van Halen was huge and I remember going to the record store with some buddies the day this album came out. Crowded, long lines, but the vibe was happy. Some people were buying the album, some the cassette and some were buying both. Popped the cassette in the cassette player once back in the car and, man, we weren’t disappointed. We had smiles just like the ones in the video.

“Don’t Tell Me What Love Can Do” is one of Van Halen’s most under appreciated songs from their last full album with Sammy Hagar called “Balance” Rocks hard!
Awww, I was weeping right along with you! It's such a beautiful song; it was an instant classic when it came out, as soon as you heard it. I wasn't even a huge Van Halen fan particularly when it came out, but this one was undeniable. Gorgeous melody, gorgeous keyboard riffs, great changes, great playing......a perfect record.
Album released in January '84, I was a senior in high school, and to this day, it's about the best video I've seen. Loved them guys back then, it was so exciting as an 18 yr old! My gosh, you crying made me cry, realizing Eddie is gone!
Great reaction! Love your honest and heartfelt reviews of the music I grew up on. You would have had so much fun in the 80's. This was the anthem for the summer of '84! Just so much fun and their music was such a part of my teen years. Glad you got to hear the magic that is Van Halen.
The best description I've ever heard of Eddie's guitar playing came from his brother Alex. When they were kids Alex played guitar in a band. Eddie the younger brother wanted to be involved so they put him on keyboards because they didn't have keyboards in their songs. But Eddie was happy to be there for the rehearsals. One day Eddie asked Alex if he could try Alex's guitar, and since they weren't doing anything important at the time, Alex said yes. Eddie and a guitar was like "spontaneous combustion", and Alex knew a change needed to be made. Alex put together another band and moved himself to drums with Eddie on guitar. This became the first incarnation of the band Van Halen that we all now know and love. Thanks.
I liked the way Sammy Hagar described Eddie’s playing, he said “I can express myself well on the guitar, the difference between me and Eddie is that he can say what I say on guitar, but he can say it in six different languages.”
David Lee Roth (Van Halen's original vocalist) said that Van Halen's sound was rock music that had grooves that u could move and dance to... along w/ vocal harmonies that were memorable. That was why Van Halen appealed to so many women in the peak of their career. Despite the goofy and smiling party image, Van Halen was a mix of drugs, alcohol, tensions and egos clashing... 'Jump' became a #1 single in 1984 (their only #1 hit) but it was a tough sell for Roth because he opposed Eddie Van Halen playing keyboards on Van Halen records. Eddie Van Halen wrote the music on keyboards in 1981 but Roth hated the track and refused to write lyrics and sing on it... David Lee Roth was the singer and he acted like the band's taskmaster - only he would decide which songs would make it on Van Halen records... Fed up w/ Roth's hesitation, Eddie Van Halen insisted in 1983 that 'Jump' would be on the Van Halen '1984' album... it was their first synthesizer-heavy song (along w/ "I'll wait") that made the record. Roth wrote the lyrics to 'Jump' apparently inspired by TV footage of a guy on the ledge of a building attempting to jump and take his own life! But it was perceived as an inspirational song... Van Halen's '1984' album sold 10 million copies in the US and was a huge hit on MTV and radio w/ the singles 'Panama' ... 'Hot for teacher'... "I'll wait"... but on tour that year, the band was imploding w/ substance abuse and infighting... David Lee Roth was always drinking and barely singing onstage and the others were no better off... In 1985, David Lee Roth recorded a solo EP 'Crazy from the heat'... hoping it would become a Hollywood movie while Van Halen were on a break. Eddie Van Halen was writing a new album which was keyboard-heavy and Roth was not enthusiastic about the music... Somehow, Roth parted ways w/ Van Halen that year. Unsure of how to move forward, Van Halen contacted numerous singers... ultimately hooking up w/ veteran solo singer Sammy Hagar, who finished the next Van Halen album '5150' in 1986 (which went to #1 in the US charts) ... while David Lee Roth launched his solo career w/ the album "Eat 'em and smile"...
Just had to say real quick as I'm watching this, not only is this song infectious as it is, so is always your energy and vibes during these sorts of videos/reactions ❤
Just a trivia mention since you've been captured by Eddie's unique sound and enjoyed "Eruption" - the instrumental song for the end credits of Twister is by him and his brother Alex, "Respect the Wind".
It warms my heart seeing how this song/video affects you. I could see the joy this brought to you-your smile, the dancing, and possibly a tear to your eye. They were such a fantastic band and I’m so happy you’re discovering them 😊
Hi Aileen, Like your channel. You have very cool reactions. Being a musician, songwriter and vocalist myself, Van Halen was one of my favorite bands. They have so much interesting history too. You were talking about Dave's high kicks, well, not only was Dave into martial arts and martial arts weaponry but he also had a triple joined back. This is why you'll see him in some videos where he can bend backwards extremely far. Also, both Eddie and Alex Van Halen took piano lessons as kids. Eddie was actually the first one to play drums before his brother. He got them as a young teen and had a paper route that he was working to pay on his drums. But when he was working, his brother would play his drums. Eventually he got better on drums then Eddie so then he deiced to start playing guitar. They had some weird demands in their touring contracts such as a big bowl of M&M's but no brown ones. So, somebody had to pick out all the brown ones before taking them to their dressing room. lol Their dad was also a good musician. He played guitar and clarinet. The band actually had him come in the studio and play clarinet on a song titled: "Big Bad Bill (Is Sweet William Now). It's on the band's album called "Diver Down". And it was actually David Lee Roth's idea to have Eddie and Alex's dad come and play.
The M&M's in the contract/rider served a practical purpose (See Wikipedia and sources): If the bowl, without brown M&Ms was present, then the band, management and crew could safely assume the other, more legitimate concerns in the technical rider were fulfilled; conversely, if the bowl was missing, or brown M&M's were present, then Van Halen management would be within their rights to have their crew or the venue inspect the work, redo it or even cancel the night's production at the venue's expense.
VH's "1984" LP/vinyl (cassette) was their final time together (w/Roth). Surreal it's 40 yrs. ago. Time flies! Along with "Jump", I luv Panama, Hot For Teacher, Drop Dead Legs, and Top Jimmy. RIP, Eddie VH. 🎸🐐 EDIT: Happy they reunited with Roth in 2012. Released one final album together.
What a great reaction!! Glad you loved it! I was 12 yrs old when this came out and looked forward to this video every night. It was also fun putting this tape in the jambox outside as we played football in the front yard.
That guitar tapping technique that Eddie had...many people think that he brought it into the rock music scene. Well, he came up with the name of 'tapping', but the actual guitarist who influenced his playing and who was the one introducing it into the rock music scene was called Steve Hackett. 🙂 He was in the band Genesis from 1971 to 1977. And there are three songs that showcase his tapping technique: The Musical Box, The Return Of The Giant Hogweed and Dancing With The Moonlit Knight. 😊😊
@@VH-Fan-007 This was country. Django Reinhardt may have done it as well as some point in the jazz scene, same as Roy Smeck. Harvey Mandel, Vittorio Carmadese have been introducing this technique in the blues and classical scenes respectively.
There are many good music reactors on YT, but you, Aileen, are the BEST! Thank you for another great reaction! I am reliving my first times hearing these bands/musicians through your fabulous reactions - which feels awesome! 😀
Aileen, it was fun to watch your reaction. "Jump" was released in the U.S. in December 1983, & it was Van Halen's first & only #1 song on the Billboard Hot 100 Charts. For those unaware about the Van Halen brothers, Eddie (guitar) & Alex (drums). They were both born in The Netherlands (Amsterdam), & they are both Dutch (Father) & Indonesian (Mother) ethnically & American nationality wise. The Van Halen family immigrated to the U.S. (Pasadena, California) in 1962 & the rest is history.
"the guitar is another limb for him" You said it. His wife, Valerie Bertinelli, recounted that basically the guitar was *Always* attached to him. p.s., the Diamond Dave was the greatest, but check out "Why Can't This Be Love" (Live) from the Sammy Hagar era. Both are equally amazing IMO.
I tear everytime I watch play not because he is no longer with but because of how much happiness he brought me....Thank you my beautiful lady for keeping Eddie's legacy alive ...God bless ❤❤❤
This song was so huge in the mid-80's. Loved it as a kid and still so fun to hear - and especially so when also watching their simple and joyous video along with you. So fun seeing you enjoy it too!
Some of the groups I grew up with are Seals and Crofts, Bad Company, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Carpenters, Three Dog Night, CCR, Deep Purple, The Doobie Brothers, The Sweet, Doctor Hook, Steely Dan and many others. We used to have American Top 40 every Sunday night.. We also had The Midnight Special and later on Don Kirchner's Rock Concert. It was a whole different world then. I really enjoy seeing young people hearing the music I grew up with
I saw that Tour...1984....3rd night in Houston sold out...Roth was at top of his game....Eddie...just incredible....guitar solo 10 min at least Michael great Bass Solo and Alex with his Drum solo....
I remember the TV channel Eurosport sometimes played this song but with video clips of race cars flying in the air (always synced to the word "jump") and then crashing, when I was a kid in the 80's. Took a while before I understood that wasnt the actual video for the song lol.
I had the great fortune to see Van Halen in concert in 1984 & they were beyond fantastic! Believe it or not when they performed this song it was almost identical to the video jumps and all by David Lee Roth. I gained a whole new respect for Eddie Van Halen's guitar skills after seeing that concert. One of the best concerts I have ever seen and I have seen some great ones! Hard to believe that was 40 years ago.
David Lee Roth been a martial artist since he was 12 - heres his credintials.. 5 Degree's of Black Belt in TAEKWONDO, 2 Degree's of Black Belt in NINJITSU, 1 Degree Black Belt in Chinese KENPO KARATE, and a Blue Belt in Gracie JIUJITSU... so yep, np with jumps, kicks & splits lol
Seeing the 1984 tour live in Columbia, SC as a teenager was incredible! Alex's Bass drum hits rattled your ribcage! DLR's Chinese broadsword exhibition was awesome, and his high kick was sick! Eddie's lady, Valerie, briefly came out on stage to say hello to everybody. It was a truly entertaining night I'll never forget. Rest in Peace Eddie❤
Jump was a massive hit, BECAUSE it was such a fun, feel-good song with that touch of an edge. The video was all over MTV. Couldn’t wait for it to come on! And Eddie was humble, which is something considering how great he was at his craft. Next do Panama!
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ this is one of the most beautiful and and thorough reviews of Van Halen I have ever seen. We all cry with you because Van Halen was an important part of our lives through one of the best decades in our history. Also we didn't know it at the time but the 1984 album would be the last hurrah for the original guys because David Lee Roth would part ways with Van Halen for the following year you should do a review of the entire fair warning album it's one of Van Halen's darkest albums the supposed critics of the time didn't think too much of this album but the fair warning album is one of Van Halen's crowning jewels and contains some of their best work that they have ever done
Great Reaction 🎉 '80's and the '90s martial arts (David and Wushu). I also received the title of Senpai ... Eddie and the others showed their abilities through instruments 🎸 ... Back then I remember carrying the Boombox jamming to the 1984 cassette 😂 all the way to the swimming hole. The group brings back a lot of memories . Thanks for the entertainment ‼️
Never saw the clip on TV but heard this song so many time on radio. We didn't have cable at home prior to '96-97, think the first Van halen clip I saw was on youtube, glad you seem to enjoy!
In 1983, MTV started doing a "call in and vote" for your favorite video, and Def Leppard's "Photograph" had soundly defeated every other video for months. Then "Jump" came out and Jump defeated every other video for months. Finally, they put the two videos up head-to-head and Jump ultimately won by with 51% of the vote, though the vote was super close and the lead went back and forth several times before the voting was closed.
I read a story where someone asked Eddie what is it like to be the world's best guitarist? Eddie said, "I don'rt know, ask Roy Clark! " Eddie was one fine guitar pickers ever and he was humble. Plus he built his own guitars. Eddie was very creative musically. And mechanically. A very special man!!!!
I've heard the same story about a handful of great guitarists, it's probably BS. Ed didn't exactly build his own guitar, either, he put different parts of different guitars together, hence Frankenstrat.
Eddie was just on a whole other world. He'll always be missed.
Yea Eddie was so cool

Their low-budget videos were some of the best things on MTV back in the day.
They said this video cost $300 to make.
@@BlackGuardXIII yeah Dave exaggerated a little bit they said it probably cost about 20 grand
@@drcuda71 that sounds more believable. I know they recorded it in Eddie’s home studio, but you still need camera operators, editors etc. Thanks

Best time growing up! Eddie will always be the man of Van Halen...keep ROCKN!! \m/!! RIP EDDIE CUZ YOU ARE DEEPLY MISSED 😢
It warms my heart seeing how this song/video affects you. I could see the joy this brought to you-your smile, the dancing, and possibly a tear to your eye. They were such a fantastic band and I’m so happy you’re discovering them 😊
Love all this venturing out to other decades. XX
Aileen - your reaction brought tears to my eyes - but tears of joy! Thanks for the honesty.
I'm 51 and saw that amazing video on the real MTV when it first aired. Timeless song. Awesome group.
EDIT: Happy they reunited with Roth in 2012. Released one final album together.
Perfect reaction from start to finish. These guys were special. Eddie one of a kind. The greatest.
From one Van Halen fan to another, that was a great reaction. You get what that band was all about. Well done.
Of all the channels who do this type of reaction format, yours is the best. Always genuine, happy, and positive. Thank you.
Wow look at Alex Van Halens drum set when kits were cool looking in the 80s!
For you younger generations, if you want to know what the 80s were like, it's this song.
Roy Clark was doing tapping long before then … tapping went back to the 50s …
@@VH-Fan-007 This was country. Django Reinhardt may have done it as well as some point in the jazz scene, same as Roy Smeck. Harvey Mandel, Vittorio Carmadese have been introducing this technique in the blues and classical scenes respectively.
This is a classic and fun fact the 1984 Chicago Cubs and WGN used it for their intro. So this song hits double for me 😁
I remember that too.
Me too , still makes me sad
Was it the ‘84 team that lost to the Padres in the NLCS?
@@CdnTrader1 yup 😒
@@CdnTrader1 Don’t remind me!
I absolutely love watching your reactions. Your joy and dancing around always puts a smile on my face.
Your presence is absolutely amazing
I tear everytime I watch play not because he is no longer with but because of how much happiness he brought me....Thank you my beautiful lady for keeping Eddie's legacy alive ...God bless ❤❤❤
The spirit of Eddie lives on through his son, Wolfgang--who is also a very talented musician & a chip off his dad's block for sure.
I really enjoy seeing young people hearing the music I grew up with
For the many who still might not know it was Eddie Van Halen that did the blazing guitar solo in Michael Jackson's Beat It.
Thanks!🎸😍
thank you for listening to the music that I grew up with.. Im so glad that you can here real music.....
Diamond Dave was a hell of a front man! He was so flexible because he practiced Chinese martial arts for years!
He did practice karate but also Brazilian jui-jitsu
This brightened my day all I could do is jump another amazing and awesome reaction ❤🔥
Around the time of the KARATE KID movie in 1984, many people were showing off their kicks and stuff, acting like seasoned martial arts masters.
It is hard to believe that most of the time, at this period, these 4 guys could barely stand to be in the same room as the others.
THE feel-good rock song of the early 80's
Great Reaction 🎉
'80's and the '90s martial arts (David and Wushu).
This brings me back to roller skating. This song was huge because everyone at the rink would jump.
Good memories
In 1983, MTV started doing a "call in and vote" for your favorite video, and Def Leppard's "Photograph" had soundly defeated every other video for months. Then "Jump" came out and Jump defeated every other video for months. Finally, they put the two videos up head-to-head and Jump ultimately won by with 51% of the vote, though the vote was super close and the lead went back and forth several times before the voting was closed.
He played guitar in Michael Jackson's "Beat It",and more... Do a little 'diggin' and the rabbit hole goes deep!🎉🥳
Love You!!!🖤🔥🔥🔥🔥
I love watching people enjoy the music I grew up with. Warms this guy's heart.
Love your dance moves Aileen! What a classic song & appreciate you contributing to EVH's legacy! You rock sister!!
