I'd love to know of a sequence that artists have thought of but technology wasn't able to accomplish, and how they had to reimagine it if it was feasible.

When you are a Junior you have a bunch of seniors holding your hand and walking you through all your shots. Chris was one of my first VFX supes, and he was amazing to work with. We worked on the Chariot race for the Ben Hur remake. The quality of the shots are top notch, even though it was some of the first work I have ever done.

Great 16-minute advertisement for the TV show Foundation. Only halfway kidding, you still managed to break down interesting FX, from the actual show runners! One detail that I'm surprised you didn't mention on the canoe shot. The canoe is now in the water, but the water ripples beneath it are still displaced and reflecting light as normal. Even a masked filter to removed most of the reflections would've looked better. Nit-pick I know, but this is the show for it. Love the show.
All those movies they listed and you can instantly see their style, the way foundation looks I'm a sucker for that kind of dystopian look and the foundation is just perfect in that regard
It's more inspired by the books rather than an adaptation of them, which is pretty disappointing. The best part in s01 was the subplot they made up from scratch.
I think Ami Yamato would make a good guest for this show; she seems to know a lot about VFX, you know, with the way she edits herself into movie scenes and stuff. You guys should invite her; she said she'd be down for it!
This is one of my favourite episodes and I’ll tell you why. First , amazing show. Everything about it screams detail, story, and thought. Second, these guys were super into it. I loved how active they were at getting into the questions and speaking on things some of the other guests probably would not. Next time maybe ask them how it was working with some of the actors and the challenges they faced. I noticed Empire usually has his belly button covered and I’m guessing it’s because they don’t want to spend extra time on the shot. I wonder if Lee has to keep that in mind. Or how it was working with practical equipment vs CG and the thought behind that. I know they touched on that a little bit. Great episode guys! 👏
For David… what the was the conversation like with Zack Snyder when discussing Superman’s flight. How did you guys execute the flight sequences so flawlessly?
i just found out about this show yesterday and I was hooked. Did not even realize I watched 5 episodes of the first season. Its mesmerizing. The Expanse is the best science fiction show I have ever seen but this has the potential to be just as good if not better.
Yeah im currently watching season 1 of the expanse and im loving it but foundation is just on another level in terms of production design... some shots in the expanse really looked rough. However i think the CGI will improve over time
I'm so impressed with Apple for both this and Silo. The commonality between the two, after watching this, is clear - great story and acting, GREAT production design, and letting the VFX arise from that.
Alot of things are wrong with foundation. But the visuals are probably the best ive seen in a TV show. I watched the sequence of the jumpship crashing and exploding so many times!
Loved the video, real annoyed you added spoilers for non released episodes without warning us. But also grateful to see spoilers for things no one has seen yet. Such a peculiar mix of emotions
I just finished season 1 and as a space lover that hasn't had the best shows or movies that are outside of star wars or star trek, the Foundation is my newest obsession. Not only is it well done story wise giving us nice juicy futuristic tech and planets and time travel relative to travel across space and space travel in general utilizing black hole essence, but also just visually it is amazingly done. For the size budget that it is it looks so wonderful. This show is a huge reason why I am sticking on to apple tv right now.
I've seen movies and TV shows where his name (David S. Goyer) features in opening credits and I'm always excited. If he reads comments, I appreciate you for all the work you've done. Increíble!
Nico I'm so glad that you asked for the audience to give their questions, because every time i see a video like this, i am always left with a blank space in my mind. The question you should've asked is: "What is your favorite color?"
6:53 the way they talk about realistic things in shows made me look closer and you can clearly see how static the boats are. Almost if they are on the solid ground and the water is just cm deep. I would never notice something like that in a show.😂 these videos are awesome
i'd love to hear more about what movies or scenes influenced those in the field to initially take an interest in animation. I'd also like to know what specific scenes in other shows and movies inspired or influenced creative moments in your guest's history. like was there a scene they took slight influence from when making the space elevator fall? was it a combination of scenes? stuff like that.
It was actually a game for me. Metal Gear Solid. That level of storytelling sparked something... I was like "I want to make something like this." As for reference for Foundation, we channeled the OG creators and artists, like Doug Trumbull, Mike Whelan and John Berkey. We wanted to pay homage to these artists, while creating something new.
I liked the popup kayak too because the unfolding effect was just quick enough for the eye to catch that the brain didn't question what happened and also because it was cool future tech that is indistinguishable from magic, like most of the show's technology, so I didn't even question the paddles or the frame materializing because I was already sold.
Finishing the first episode of the second season, one of my first thoughts was- I can't wait till they do a whole episode on Foundation on VFX Artist reacts, because the quality of this show is chefs kiss* amazing. Avatar is the only Ip that comes to mind now a days that compares to the cgi realest acquired in this show. The immersive qualities though remind me of the go blade runner... (written before watching this ep of VFX Aritist...)
Having these VFX artist on the show and having them discuss projects that look stunning for them to say, "Oh yeah, that was a bad week at work," really speaks volumes.

All those movies they listed and you can instantly see their style, the way foundation looks I'm a sucker for that kind of dystopian look and the foundation is just perfect in that regard
You've made it to the BIG TIME when David Goyer is sitting on YOUR couch!
That whole scene with true space elevator was INCREDIBLE - watched it so many times , bravo !
Having read all of Asimov's Foundation novels not a single shot of this show reminds me of the books.
The space elevator crashing comes from Red Mars by Kim Stanley Robinson surely?
It's more inspired by the books rather than an adaptation of them, which is pretty disappointing. The best part in s01 was the subplot they made up from scratch.
Love the last question! It really puts in perspective on how we continue to strive for something better for our own achievements!
I think Ami Yamato would make a good guest for this show; she seems to know a lot about VFX, you know, with the way she edits herself into movie scenes and stuff. You guys should invite her; she said she'd be down for it!
YES Foundation’s VFX is absolutely stunning. It’s the second best aspect of the whole series after the soundtrack.
Damn that's alotta jews
Foundation is amazing. I have been thoroughly entertained from both season 1 and 2. Brilliant work.
i just found out about this show yesterday and I was hooked.
The quality of this show it's amazing, congratulations
Don't get me wrong I love VFX artists react but man I hope we get more animators react soon!
Foundation is such a rad show, great to see it on VFX artists react again!
The fact that he hated his own canoe shot, shows that the VFX team cares about their own work. Respect 🙏

"It's a Zergling, Lester. Smaller type of Zerg."
Seeing them committed and passionate like this. Can't wait to see s02..
Loved the video, real annoyed you added spoilers for non released episodes without warning us. But also grateful to see spoilers for things no one has seen yet. Such a peculiar mix of emotions
QUESTION: does you being in the film industry and knowing what goes on in the background, does it ruin or enhance movies for you?
Foundation has the best vfx I've seen on a scifi Tv show. The picture is so aesthetic, kudos guys
I do actually love (in a weird way) that Apple doesn’t need to worry about profits and can just do things like this
Awesome episode it was a pleasure working on this project!
This show is a huge reason why I am sticking on to apple tv right now.
most underrated and underwatched show on Apple TV+. Hope they get the opportunity to complete the whole story over multiple seasons.
Black. Paint it all Black.
I like how honest these guys are. If I were to ask them any question it would be what were you disappointed with, that you wished had come out better?
6:53 the way they talk about realistic things in shows made me look closer and you can clearly see how static the boats are. Almost if they are on the solid ground and the water is just cm deep.
I would never notice something like that in a show.😂 these videos are awesome
This is the show I will wait for. I just wish you could do it every day. It’s so freaking awesome.
i'd love to hear more about what movies or scenes influenced those in the field to initially take an interest in animation.
We wanted to pay homage to these artists, while creating something new.
these guys bring the perfect couch energy for this show
David S Goyer 😮 🪶🎩 ffs well done crew. 👊
Should have done a demonic toys clip
Damn. David S. Goyer. What a get. Proud of you guys.
I've never seen foundation, but after this episode, I might try an Apple TV subscription to give it a shot. It's right up my alley, for sure.
Foundation is a fantastic series. The visuals are top notch. Thanks Apple for this and Silo.
The plot and acting is impeccable in season 2, I can't even find a single flaw in VFX, and it's the best sci-fi series of 2023, hands-down.
Congratulations on showing a fully accurate space elevator, we need more of this kind of stuff in pop culture
An accurate space elevator would be a crater on the ground given that we don't know any real or theoretical substance with enough tensile strength to make one, no matter what graphene researchers say. 😝
@@CanalTremocos perhaps carbon nanotubes or something an actively supported material could work. And this space elevator is very nice to see rather than nonsensical rubbish that we see in most sci-fi movies and shows
