  • Sean Mandrake of Audiostorm pulls apart the Midas L6 and investigates the build quality.
There's a wide mix of different reviews on the internet regarding the Midas L6 so I bought this rack with my own money so I could explore any potential issues that might affect the 500 series modules I am designing.
I thought it'd be nice to share my findings publically, so here you go, hope you find them useful!

Yes these chassis are solid as expected from Midas. I have the 6I and I have no noise at all. There was a guy that said when he had it rack mounted with other units he was getting a hum. I didn't have that problem either and I have 4 slots filled so far. Not really sure what is going on but thanks for this video. It shows the superb build quality.

Thank you! I was hoping I’d see a review like this one of the unit. It would be very interesting to see you upgrade the psu and the choices you make.

Thank you for this review. I’ve heard a few horror stories about noise. So I was trying to shy away from this box and get the bento box 6 slot.

People who do have noise with these tend to say there is less noise the more you fill it!

Do you have any modules with transformers in them, like Neve or API preamps or EQ’s?

This is interesting, thankyou. I had noise in my rack (not a Midas) and it was due to a faulty nerve preamp. If the psu is noisey subtracting an adding modules is one way to try to identify if it is module related.

I have two of the l10's with the v2 power supplies. They're very good, bumped to excellent when you factor in the price. That said, upgrading the capacitors on the junction board behind the front panel was worth the $10 in parts and a few hours of work (most of that was screwing the chassis / components. I wish I'd thought to do some measurements / samples for the before and after. Not a night and day difference - more like dawn and dusk.

I've had mine for a whole year and noise issues whatsoever!
Sadly that is because it is still in the box and unused....
But still, it's very quiet LOL

Mine seems to be making high pitch noise and I can't stop it, tried to change cables, plugs, no idea why it's so noisy on my neve511 preamp... I can not use it for professional recording 😢

Torqs have the same issue as philips, you can use the T9 on a T10 and slowly damage the screw

That's a very fair point. Whatever you use getting the right driver is important. But I do think its also super easy to get confused with phiillips and pozidrive being so similar and just make mistakes.

Hi Sean, thanks for posting - you gave me the confidence to mine up. On inspection, I've noticed one of the inductors is badly wound on the PCB on the front blue plate, will this be responsible any hum?

Amazing video. I have an L10 with a couple units that haven't been turned on yet and seeing a few negative vids had me wondering.
