The Midas L6 500 Series Chassis and Why I decided to Send It Back

  • Today I share my reasons why the Midas L6 500 series chassis is not for me and my reasons to send it back to Sweetwater. The Midas L6 500 series chassis is a great gateway 500 series chassis that is well made. Except for a few minor issues this chassis is and outstanding bargain. The biggest issue I faced was that the power supply created a electro magnetic hum problem when using it with my high quality preamps. Knowing that I wanted to permanently rack a series of compressors and having daisy chained a preamp compressor unit as an experiment the hum would not allow me to utilize it in that fashion. That’s my experience and your’s may differ. If you don’t have as comprehensive a setup as I do then you should give this chassis a try.

Hi Warren, I've recently stumbled across the 500 series form factor and have been doing a lot of research about both it and other rack components as I start bringing together ideas of what my ideal home studio rack might look like and consist of. One of the big questions on my mind was about these Midas chassis and specifically their power supplies, as otherwise they seem like pretty nice products. I did notice when comparing to other much more expensive units that those higher-end chassis mentioned power supply shielding while the Midas do not. So this video is very informative and helpful! I am quite competent when it comes to stuff like electronics modifications and soldering, so I will explore what kind of options there are for modding the power supplies of the Midas chassis before I write them off for my application.
Also, I haven't yet watched your original review so I'm going to do that right now. Really like your presentation style and honest, direct feedback, so count me as a subscriber! Thanks!

Thanks for making this video. I almost bought the L6 500 but realized that i also would have racked it next to another preamp. Thanks for watching out for us consumers! I also liked your video on calibrating preamps

Great review, thanks. One production thing; I thought the constant drum groove was very distracting. You were sharing some great information and the groove just got in the way. As a video producer, I might suggest you use it at the intro, outro and maybe a few spots for accent. You are plenty interesting without the boom-ching! 😎

You don't need to be handy with electronics to resolve the issues you personally had. A screw is a screw. Just change them out to cross or thumb style screws and your set. As far as the PSU noise goes. I have had no issues with my L6 and it's racked in between another channel strip and a headphone amp. But here's the easy fix. Copper shielding tape. It's allot of screws. But remove the lid and shield all the way around the inside of the module bay. I actually have a shielded module in Bay 6 and it's perfectly quiet. To be honest the PSU itself is not creating any noise, the rails are quiet. It's the module receiving magnetic interference. Which is a symptom of the module, not the PSU. All easy fixes though. For the money, these cannot be beat. Sorry to hear they didn't work for you. I know we all have slightly different scenarios in our shops.

You can go to home Depot and match up the same length, diameter, and thread pitch ordinary head machine screws.

Had the lindell 506 then recently got the API and I noticed audible differences between a mix I printed with the exact settings from my xfilter racked in the lindel vs Api 6 slot

@@cptboogy That must be so disappointing! Every time I see a new product that is lower priced and promising great or even basic features, I am disappointed by poor reviews that are starting to sound the same. Either the noise floor is raised quite high or there is a noticeable hiss sound. Then there are other issues that included hum interferance or dropouts in audio! Believe 99% of the problem is the power supply since not having enough power to a pre amp will mean that you will require more gain to get sound levels the way you may want which will mean you bring up the noise floor. Inadequate shielding will lead to the interference problem which I have fixed myself in even expensive cable by rewireing/soldering. interesting... I have a good signal chain already with an /SSL SiX > Prism Orpheus >< Protools/ but wanted to add a Neve 1073LB instead of buying the 1073SPX. I thought this was simple as picking up a basic box which should be an easy option but nooooo after looking at the cost of a good unit with a solid power supply that will not be prone to low headroom inducing power issues, the cost rises to make the units with only 2 - 3 slots pointless and then you may as will look at the 6 slot units that cost only 100$ more or so. Im leaning towards the Neve r6 at the moment or just buying the 1073 SPX

I actually just picked one of these up have it rack mounted with many preamps and compressors above and below. I have 4 slots filled, ssl six, Midas eq, dox 520 and a Fredenstein compressor. not a single hum hiss or anything. I must be the lucky one. I have heard people have problems like this but I also have heard about these problems with other chassis. There is a ground lift button on the back.

Hi Warren I decided to go with AMS 500 1073 module but which case to buy. Lot of people say Midas has noise... Is this true? Should I go with Original API 500 case or maybe Rupert Neve R6 500 Rack case?

    • @WarrenHenry

I’ve found the Midas to be noisy in certain circumstances. If you budget permits buy the 8 slot API. If not then buy the Midas from a dealer that gives a refund.
