My wife and I were blown away the first time we seen in the mouth of madness. One of our favorites. Way to low on the list. Omg big trouble in little China is probably my favorite movie ever made.
escape from new york and escape from la are both wonderfully executed action films one problem is, the first one was made through mgm, while its sequel was made through paramount and while this franchise hasn't catched up to franchises like rambo i believe that if the escape franchise were to reboot finally, a different studio could reboot the franchise alltogether and make it more fun
despite the bad tomato rating, memoirs of an invisible man is pretty good nonetheless cause i love the comedy between chase and hannah and the hilarious appearances by sam neill as a misunderstood scientist that simply wants to help restore chase all three actors are great in this film and its basically like the equivelant of if neill had appeared in the vacation movies as one of chase's goofy neighbors
I liked Escape from L.A.. It was fun! Also "At the Mouth of Madness " is quite a good film btw, I'd recommend watching twice and you'd capture more of the story in the second viewing...

The Eyes of Laura Mars (1978) (script)
Worth mentioning about Ghosts of Mars, it was originally Escape from Mars, the third Snake Plissken (sic?) movie. Studio interference blah blah blah, then they cast Ice Cube, which I am 100% fine with. It was a passionless movie in the end, could tell somebody along the line decided to suck all the joy out of it. I disagree with most of the ranking, but Assault on Precinct 13 is totally number 1 for me. Masterclass in building tension, and such a satisfying payoff.
I wouldn’t say his “best” cuz he didn’t write or make the music for film. So any iconic line from the Thing ISN’T from carpenter and any song from the film isn’t from him either.
I always thought that Assault on Precinct 13 is kinda like a horror film when it gets dark, its very tense and mysterious and people get killed in slightly spooky ways. I'm super-pleased that Starman gets a high rating cos I do love that film :D I don't think Jeff Bridges is underrated in it - didn't he earn an oscar nom for best actor? Cool list/video though.
Assault of Precinct 13 is a a horror film. No normal gang would have those numbers, and where in any city wouldn't police show up when you have a major battle going on that could be heard for miles around. Also a gang would not be so persistent. Something supernatural is going on.
Nice to see a WhatCulture video that doesn't have some insufferable hipster faking exaggerated accents and trying to force catchphrases. Granted, I haven't watched swathes of WhatCulture's recent content but if this is the direction they're going in then its a VAST improvement and I'll probably start watching again. 👍
I saw most of these movies while cutting class on 42nd st. (the Duce) 75 cents for a double feature. Now I have them on blu ray and DVD. Except for the mouth of madness, that's streaming on VUDU.
Just so you know the thing should be number one. Even though it bombed at the box office and didn't get the success it deserved because of ET. It's now in the class of cult classics and needs that status now. Shouldn't really go by how it did at box office.
The Thing is undoubtedly the best for me. An incredible film. Good performances, great idea and phenomenal atmosphere. Also i can’t argue its a good film because its not, but i enjoy Ghosts Of Mars. I can’t really tell you why, i guess because although its bad its not boring and i think being boring is the worst sin of a film to me. Its bad but fun.
It's absolutely bizarre that "Assault on Precinct 13" is his top rated film, especially above hits like "The Thing" and "Halloween." That said, I'm a-ok with this because Assault has probably my favorite premise of a film, ever - some cops and some convicts fending off the attempted siege of the police station by a gang out for blood. It just oozes cool.
To be honest, I feel that Prince of Darkness and In the Mouth of Madness were very well done and demonstrate how carpenter was a master of creating horror on a budget. They also are arguably among the best Cthulhu mythos inspired movies (along with The Thing)
Mathew Ogram Hell Yes! What I don’t understand is why no one has released Prince of Darkness, The Thing and In The Mouth Of Madness as a John Carpenter Apocalypse Trilogy Boxset
John Carpenter is one of my all time favorite directors. Even when he does something bad it never fails to be entertaining. The only movie that has ever pushed that boundary of good time experience was Ghost of Mars. While it isn't unredeemable in its badness (the actual monsters on Mars where pretty interesting and he clearly took what he learned from previous work and didn't spend too much time explaining where they came from) Ice Cube is almost a parody of himself in it and that's just... a shame. But still I remember watching both of John Carpenter's Vampire movies and they both (though not hugely different, are different due to the change of leads... which if anyone talks shit about Bon Jovi in that 2nd movie, I will find you, and I will tie you up... and make you listen to "Shot through the Heart" until your Dead), are pretty campy and great. I wish John Carpenter had had the chance to direct some real romances like he wanted... seeing as how he was shoehorned into being a Horror Director by the studios. I adore the guy to death though.
ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13. BRILLIANT. My fave. Unexpected but the people are correct. 98%, Wow! Perfect look and score. Is a zombie, western movie, reflecting social concerns as most horrors do. Am stoked, even if the lady presenting doesn't get the "verdict" so much.
1. The Thing 2. Halloween 3. The Fog 4. Escape from New York 5. Prince of Darkness 6. In the Mouth of Madness 7. They Live 8. Big Trouble in Little China Create a better list of movie to watch on Halloween night...or any night.I dare you. I DARE you. Thought so.

Love it, Assault on Precinct 13 is probably one of my 5 all time favorite movies. I must have watched this 500 times growing up!
I'm a Christine fan nice to see it get a mention as its often overlooked and quite a gem
I completely agree with her qualms regarding this list.
1) the thing 2) halloween 3) escape from new york 4) they live my favorite
John Carpenter is one of my favorite directors. The Thing, Halloween, and Escape from New York has to be Top 3,followed by Big Trouble in Little China, They Live, Starman, Assault on Precinct 13, The Fog, In The Mouth of Madness and Prince of Darkness to make Top 10
Like the video but here's the true list:
1.The Thing

The Thing at 5, how on earth? Its his best movie by far.
1. The thing
2. Halloween
3. Big trouble in little China 😂 love it.
My horror movie favourites
1. The thing
2. A nightmare on elm street
3. Scream or Halloween.
Vampires should be much higher
My wife and I were blown away the first time we seen in the mouth of madness. One of our favorites. Way to low on the list. Omg big trouble in little China is probably my favorite movie ever made.
escape from new york and escape from la are both wonderfully executed action films
one problem is, the first one was made through mgm, while its sequel was made through paramount
and while this franchise hasn't catched up to franchises like rambo
i believe that if the escape franchise were to reboot finally,
a different studio could reboot the franchise alltogether
and make it more fun
despite the bad tomato rating, memoirs of an invisible man is pretty good nonetheless
cause i love the comedy between chase and hannah
and the hilarious appearances by sam neill as a misunderstood scientist that simply wants to help restore chase
all three actors are great in this film
and its basically like the equivelant of if neill had appeared in the vacation movies as one of chase's goofy neighbors
I liked Escape from L.A.. It was fun! Also "At the Mouth of Madness " is quite a good film btw, I'd recommend watching twice and you'd capture more of the story in the second viewing...
1. Escape From L. A (1996)
2. The Thing (1982)
3. They Live (1988)
4. Assault on Precinct 13 (1976)
5. Escape From New York (1981)
6. Dark Star (1974)
7. Prince of Darkness (1987)
8. In The Mouth of the Madness (1995)
9. Halloween II (1981) (script)
10. Village of the Damned (1995)
11. Halloween (1978)
12. Body Bags (1993)
13. The Fog (1980)
14. The Ward (2011)
15. The Eyes of Laura Mars (1978) (script)
Assault on Precinct 13 is the best John Carpenter Movie!
I take back every bad thing I've thought about you, chick from WhatCulture. You've got reasonable taste.
The Thing is one of the best film of all time!
Definitely Carpenter at his best!
i kinda liked how they made the remake a sequel, shows respect
I wouldn’t say his “best” cuz he didn’t write or make the music for film. So any iconic line from the Thing ISN’T from carpenter and any song from the film isn’t from him either.
im so glad they live was on this list. it was sutch an eye opener for me. it was like i had put the glassess on u kno?
1. The Thing, Prince of Darkness, They Live, In the Mouth of Madness, and Halloween. Yes, they are all #1.
I saw Dark Star at a Quonset hut cinema in Berkeley when it came out. Great acting by O’Bannon and Carpenter. Clever, creative and screaming funny.
One of the greatest film makers of all time
Great number 1. Assault is a fantastic movie.
I saw Ghosts of Mars at 16 and that lead ghost scared me so bad that I will always love it.
I saw most of these movies while cutting class on 42nd st. (the Duce) 75 cents for a double feature. Now I have them on blu ray and DVD. Except for the mouth of madness, that's streaming on VUDU.
Mouth of madness is one of my favourite films such an under rated gem
i like sam neill
Assault on Precinct 13 is NOT better than Halloween, The Thing or Escape from New York no way in Hell!!
I always thought Halloween was boring. Assault on Precinct 13 always felt like my kind of jam.
Just so you know the thing should be number one. Even though it bombed at the box office and didn't get the success it deserved because of ET. It's now in the class of cult classics and needs that status now. Shouldn't really go by how it did at box office.
Vampires was enjoyable . I'm not sure how it holds up, but I liked it when I saw it
1. Halloween
2. The thing
3. Escape from New York
4. The fog
5. They live
The Thing is #1.......cinematic horror/ suspense thriller...... MASTERPIECE
Who IN THE WORLD would put "They Live" above "The Thing"???
The Thing is undoubtedly the best for me. An incredible film. Good performances, great idea and phenomenal atmosphere.
Also i can’t argue its a good film because its not, but i enjoy Ghosts Of Mars. I can’t really tell you why, i guess because although its bad its not boring and i think being boring is the worst sin of a film to me. Its bad but fun.
Yes! Finally someone gives Assault on Precinct 13 the credit it deserves.
She's replace Jules as One-Per-List wonder
The Fog? Carpenter's Scooby Doo episode. Could've swapped it out with Ghosts of Mars.
No one less creative than the man is allowed to judge from worst to best or the other way around
1. The Thing
2. Halloween
3. The Fog
4. Escape from New York
5. Prince of Darkness
6. In the Mouth of Madness
7. They Live
8. Big Trouble in Little China
Create a better list of movie to watch on Halloween night...or any night.I dare you. I DARE you. Thought so.
Best directors of all time in no order, Francis Ford Copella, Stanley Kubrick, John Carpenter, Quinton Tarrentino, Steven Spielberg, and Martin Scorsese.
Ari Schuman I would add Christopher Nolan too. He hasn’t made nearly as many movies as these guys but he’s extremely consistent
Dylan Crum I could see that, he’s made some great movies.
What about Hitchcock

It's just lazy work, you can't judge classics by RT scores do your own scoring
Red dead 2 but you're a vampire hunter sounds like a really fun game
We're going by Rotten frickin Tomatoes?! Dislike!
Even bough he didn’t directed it
Halloween III: Season of the Witch’s rotten tomato score DESERVES JUSTICE!!!
