The Thing is definitely my favourite John Carpenter film. His films immediately pull you in from the very beginning thanks to his score and atmosphere, for example, "The Fog". Big fan of his apocalypse trilogy.
    Great video.

Your deep dives are really entertaining me while I attempt to unpack the million boxes from our move so thank you Kylie!!! Also, my favorite is PRINCE OF DARKNESS, which I’m realizing only now most people would consider an unorthodox fav, but I really love how ambitious it is and the pervasive sense of dread.

I saw "The Thing" when it premiered in 1982. Some of the practical special effects left my stomach churning, but the movie maintained a level of suspense like none other. Kurt Russell was the epitome of kick ass! Thanks for this review!

I’m so glad you put Village of the Damned so high. The John Carpenter version is my favorite movie of all time. No offense to anyone but I’m not sure why everyone says the original was better I found it very slow and very boring. The sequel children of the Damned was a little more interesting.

Omg I can't believe I found your videos only a week ago, I have such a great time with your horror commentary and knowledge, and you're only 1 year younger than me! I honestly cheered for Village of the Damned to be as higher as possible 'cause I love that movie and out of all Carpenter's three I've seen (with Thing and Halloween of course) it's the only one unapreciated enough in my opinion, so really thank you for that 5th place. I've seen the original VotD last year and I think it's really great film for 1960 but remake is still my favourite and the only movie ever that cause me faster heart beat by watching the final scene.

When it comes to John Carpenter, I can narrow it down to a top 3 that is as follows:
    3. Christine
    2. Assault on Precinct 13
    2. Halloween
    2. The Fog
    2. Escape from New York
    2. Big Trouble in Little China
    2. Prince or Darkness
    2. They Live
    And at number one…
    The Thing!
PS: today I learned (after watching this video) that I’m too much of a millennial for gen-z slang like “Carpentussy.”
    Stay spookie, Creepy Kylie!!

    A few quick comments:
    1. When you mentioned a certain famous TikTok sound at the beginning, I was kinda expecting/disappointed that you didn’t connect Carpenter to it😂
    2. We now know who inspired Kylie to be such a hippie. Thank you Carpenter and Debra Hill!
    3. I never knew that Roddy Rich was a professional wrestler in the 80s who appeared in a Carpenter film😂
    4. I personally have Halloween slightly ahead of The Thing, but you can certainly go either way. They are the bonfided classics of Carpenter!
Great video Kylie!! I will be looking out to see where you place Carpenter all time amid horror directors, if you are going to rank them at the end of this series!

In the Mouth of Madness, while it falls a bit flat in certain points, will always hold a special place in my heart because it's probably the only really good Lovecraft movie out there. Not forgetting about Reanimator here, but Reanimator lacks that element of cosmic horror I particularly enjoy.
Also, The Fog, Prince of Darkness, In the Mouth of Madness and The Thing are probably among the most atmospheric horror movies out there. But that is a very subjective thing, I think.
Anyway, thank you for doing this, I thoroughly enjoy your videos.

    1. The Thing
    2. Halloween
    3. In the Mouth of Madness
    4. Escape From New York
    5. Escape From L.A. (a guilty pleasure for me.)
He's not my favorite horror director. But he does have an excellent eye for blocking shots, telling a linear narrative, and creating atmosphere.
I agree that most of his best work are films where he just keeps it simple.
He seems to have his fingers on the pulse of things (especially with themes that involve feeling alone and isolated as well as the "fantastic") that seems to connect with a lot of like-minded people.

JC did make a Western. He co-wrote "El Diablo," a 1990 TV film starring Anthony Edwards and Lou Gossett Jr. JC wanted to make "El Diablo" instead of "The Thing," because he considered the 1951 version as perfection and he wanted to direct a Western.

Interesting ranking and review . I’m a John Caroenter fan ….. I can’t think of a ranking right now but I’ll say among my favorites would be Halloween , The Thing, Big Trouble in Little China , Prince of Darkness , They Live , Assault on Precinct 13, Escape From NY …… but fairly high up , The Fog.
I think The Fog is one of his more underrated films. The cinematography was excellent (wasn’t Dean Cundhy handling it ?) , and the actors …… I think they all were pretty good . The story was more plot driven than focused on the individual characters…… but that’s fine. It was a supernatural horror film and the creepiness , suspense ….. that all appealed to me . I think with repeated viewings you’d get the feel and find it’s an excellent film . I’ve had more nightmares over this film than almost any of his other films . It seems into the subconscious better ?? Not sure how to describe it. As I think you put it - to each his own. I’d give it another chance or more chances though . It is just such a creepy film .

Your vids are great! I... wish for you to give The Fog another try. Love that movie. Your critiques are valid, but I really see it as a vibes movie. I love the setting, the Priest, and most of all Adrienne Barbeau's sexy voice DJ skills. I found her to be believably great at the job. Its not a scary movie, its not a movie full of memorable characters (other than the two previously mentioned), but I love it as a vibes movie.

Back in 2018 I went to this horror convention and got to attend a John Carpenter q and a. After it ended, I didn't want to get stuck in a line of people trying to file out of the room, so I quickly left through this back door and made my way to the lobby of the hotel we were at. As soon as I walk back into the building, BOOM theres big JC himself standing right there! It was just me and these two other girls, and we all instantly had an "oh shit that's him!" moment and froze. Before any of us could make up our mind about whether we should say something to him or not he began to make his way out of the room, so we instinctively started following him lol. It quickly dawned on me that we looked weird just awkwardly trailing behind him, so I stopped 😂 I regret not at least saying hi 😭

I think a certain shout out needs to go to "The King in Yellow" by Robert M Chambers, which directly inspired Lovecraft himself. I haven't seen In The Mouth of Madness, but the concept of someone going crazy upon reading a manuscript is literally taken from "The King in Yellow", which has elements of cosmic horror too. Just a fun tidbit for anyone who didn't know.

  • @brenair4480

Good rankings. I think the only Carpenter film I won't watch again is probably Memoirs, and not because of Carpenter, he did what he could. It's because of Chevy Chase. Chevy (I'm the star I say how to make a movie) chase was a nightmare on set and caused so many problems for crew, actors, and just anyone around him in general. It's considered by Carpenter his worst film making experience and the only one he would take back in hindsight. Basically Chevy made Kinski look like a silly tantrum on set compared to Chevys antics.
Also, Carpenter is a huge western fan. He made two westerns in his career. Can you guess which ones? If you said Big Trouble in Little China, and Vampires you get a gold star. Both films have a very macho esque feel to the leads. Kurt emulated John Wayne for Big Trouble in Little China. James Woods hammed it up with his over the top macho dialogue.
    Top 5
    1. Big Trouble in Little China
    2. In the Mouth of Madness
    3. Escape from New York
    4. Prince of Darkness
    5. The Thing
Carpenters apocalypse trilogy for me is interchangeable but for today that's my ranking

Also, I love ALL these cats that I'm about to mention, but I truly feel that Carpenter's worst feature films are far superior in comparison to the worst from Craven, Hooper, Romero, Argento, DePalma, or Cronenberg. Carpenter is the GOAT!

Cool fact about They live is that John cast Piper because he thought that he didn’t look like a ridiculously jacked wrestler but was more of a plausible worker and just a dude who was a builder as a job but doesn’t really draw attention to himself which I love, if there’s one thing that defines John’s filmography for me it’s definitely atmosphere, from how cosy and familiar Haddonfield feels to how empty and almost post apocalyptic that New York became in Escape, The Fog and The Thing both have super creepy surroundings and John perfectly increases the tension throughout them, I do wish he’d return to directing but oh well at least his new Blumhouse Halloween scores are awesome

At a Halloween party in 2015, it was my job to bring a bunch of scary movies that included all of the big name titles and a movie called The Thing. It was the version directed by John Carpenter and the first scene happened, it was of course the scene with the "dog" being chased by the helicopter and shot at by the guy with the rifle. Loud gasps and boos erupted by everyone there as they thought the person was hunting the dog/wolf so they had me turn the movie off. The first time I saw the movie I had a similar reaction, but my aunt said, here's a spoiler, that isn't a dog, its the creature, the bad creature. Perhaps I should've told my friends that the was The Thing, as it is a brilliant movie.

I grew up with John Carpenter, Wes Craven, Clive Barker so I LOVE his movies with only a couple exceptions and I'm sorry but we are going to have to agree to disagree. John Carpenter is ahead of our time and his movies, mostly, are appreciated with the passage of time and then recognized for the masterpieces they are. No hate to you or your work but give his movies a second or third watch and you may appreciate them more than now.

Ghost of Mars was really horribly bad, but Vampires somehow became strangely "stylish" with James Woods' exaggerated gestures and Carpenter's typical solutions. And The Fog is a masterpiece, in my top 5 Carpenter films. 24:26 Dialogues are very important elements of a film and can easily ruin it. Carpenter's films wouldn't be nearly as successful without good dialogue.

Okay so I'm gonna say a thing and its gonna be a hot take thing, but its how I feel.
I don't think that John Carpenter, Clive Barker, or Wes Craven were the titans we think they were when it came to movies. I think they made a couple lightening in a bottle movies and the reputations from those films carried them and is carrying them through their careers. We keep going because we are looking for that cinematic high they gave us with movies like The Thing, Halloween, NoES, Scream, Hellraiser, etc, but more often then not if you go through all of their filmographies, they have more misses than hits. Its just when they hit that success, its POWERFUL and they HIT IT PERFECT. Had Wes not done Scream, he was probably done for because I can't think of anything other than that series that truly hit for him after that. Same with Carpenter. John had Halloween and the Thing, which didn't even really get popular until later and I think that push kept him relevant.
Also, please don't get me wrong, I LOVE Carpenter and Craven and I respect them very much for their contributions to cinema, but it just feels like I don't enjoy most of their films, but the ones I do...the love for them is etched on my soul for all eternity.
    Top Five:
    Halloween
    The Thing
    Vampires
    In The Mouth of Madness
    They Live
*Deep breath* OKAY... let me have it, haha.

If I had to make a top Haunted Hippie videos , this would definitely be top 3 !!! I love coming to my filming lesson ! I didn’t know about many of these films . Surprisingly, I got so intrigued with escape from New York . I remember my dad liking this film. Do you think Cristine needs a remake ?
Omg so excited for this series ESPECIALLY when you talk about M.night and James Wan . My fave 1&2 directors OMGGG

:,) I don’t know if Christine needs a remake tbh. It would be interesting to see them use a modern car like a Tesla but we’ve seen the evil AI thing before with the child’s play remake
