A History of Unmade John Carpenter Movies

  • A trip through the filmmaking history of John Carpenter to reveal the many movies that the Horror Master almost made, ranging from a collaboration with Black Christmas director Bob Clark to a remake of Creature From The Black Lagoon through the Snake Plissken part 3 of Escape From Earth. Would these have been more classic entries into Carpenter's filmography? Or is it best these went unmade?

I don’t think it’ll ever have the “rediscovery” appeal of The Thing, but give it a few years and I bet more people will come around to it. That movie is great.

I think he had a few projects that would’ve been excellent, but ultimately he didn’t like working with bigger budgets, in which a studio has more oversight, so it’s likely he’d have been miserable.
He is a really great example of necessity being the mother of invention, with how he plans things out for the lower budgets he’s had, and makes it work for him.
I think his musical scores, are also both praised and underrated.
One day, I’ll make a video on how Halloween, just wouldn’t work as well without his score. There are many simple moments, that a synthesizer effect really makes hit harder.
It sets tone, and often gives the viewer clues as to what’s about to happen, and in the moment.

In the Mouth of Madness is one of my favorite movies of all time.
I read a lot of Lovecraft, from middle school through high school, and I’d also read many Stephen King, and a few Dean Koontz books/short stories, so it was a perfect movie for me at 18 years old.
Speaking of Koontz, if you’ve ever seen the movie High Tension; there’s a made for tv, two part miniseries, based on the book Intensity, which was made several years prior.
High Tension steals multiple scenes straight from the book, and/or the miniseries, to the point it made the movie unwatchable for me.

This story differs from the 1982 film in a number of ways including the fact that the creature possess the ability to read minds. My fave horror director. Hollywood should treat him with respect as most of his ideas have been hijacked and made into other movies. CFTBL movie would have been awesome! A Thing sequel would have been good too!
Man, passing on Exorcist 3....! Now THAT would've been a movie i'd want to see as it is actually one of my fave horror movies.
I really hope that he comes back to direct, and with the success of the remakes of Halloween, I think that Blumhouse will be the production house that have directorial plans for him and will give him the freedom he wants. PLUS it's a production house that loves and respects him and will no doubt give JC the agreements to make the movie HE wants and with not so much interference. He seems to get along and like working with the team behind the remakes of Halloween over there, so I can't see him going into production with any other company as all the others promise him the world, but deliver him nothing.
Good luck John Carpenter, perhaps you may not have had the respect and honours you rightly deserved from Hollywood etc, but know that amongst TRUE horror fans, we give you the 'props' you always deserve and we hold that torch for your movies and will continue to do so well after you've gone.
And listen up Oscars.....THIS MAN DESERVES A LIFETIME ACHIEVERS AWARD AS A DIRECTOR. IT'S THE LEAST YOU CAN DO. You've given them to far less, and without THIS man, the cash you've made with slasher genre started by him and Bob Clark (Black Christmas 1974), you wouldn't have the multimillion horror franchises you have today....... SHOW THIS MAN RESPECT!

Another interesting fact about Firestarter and Christine: George A. Romero was originally set to direct the film adaptation of Christine (as he and King were friends and had worked on Creepshow together). Romero was released from the project and Carpenter had taken over.

Successess & setbacks... perfect choice of words. One of his biggest setbacks, became one of the greatest Horror/Sci-Fi movies of all time. His setbacks, should never be considered as absolute failures. Big Trouble in Little China is beloved now, and some people that discovered it later, discovered that much of Mortal Kombat came from that movie. No need to discuss what They Live has contributed, all with the great Rowdy Roddy Piper, who did a pretty poor acting job, but somehow came out as iconic anyway. His Successes and failures were always very unique, and if they didn't succeed themselves, they made a huge impact on other creators' visions. Most of them. Don't @me for Ghosts of Mars.. the guy is pure genius and talent. Have you seen the video where he plays the Halloween theme on the Nintendo Labo? It's awesome, he's great.

Considering his love for Howard Hawks, I’m sad he never got a chance to direct a western. Though, it’s understandable why, westerns were dying out when he came on the scene.

Even if he didn't make an explicit western so many of his movies have very clear western influences that he may just have decided not to. Assauly on precinct 13 is probably the clearest example of "in all but setting this is a western" but the protagonist of They Live is literally a man with no name lol

    • @mttylerdurden9
      @mttylerdurden9 ปีที่แล้ว

@James Cartwright "overated and not held up" that's your opinion. The reason his Batman year one didn't get made is because the studio wanted a different actor from the one Aronofsky wanted to play Batman, and they a more safe and marketable movie that could sell toys. Aronofsky clashes with producers because at the end of the day hes the one making the film and if it goes poorly, it's all going to be on him.

I hope John carpenter directs another horror classic soon…… I think the creature from the black lagoon would be a great comeback film considering he wanted to make the film in the past…. I’m sure universal would allow him to construct it into a classic remake with that John carpenter magic and music to add to the film.
