I grew up in the highly religious south in the U.S. I remember seeing this live on SNL when I was 11. I remember walking to school with a few friends the following Monday. They said they would never listen to Sinéad O’Connor's music again. I remember asking my friends what the reason was for tearing up the pope's photo. The response I received was that she was just crazy. I just remember thinking to myself there had to be a reason. I never stopped listening to her music. I also remember a few years later when the child abuse scandal of the Catholic Church hit was finally being talked about in the media. My first thought was of Sinead. She was brave and right to do what she did. Would it be as big of a controversy if it happened today? Of course it would if we were all ignorant of any specific truth that the public would never want to believe.
It's always good to hear some accounts from when this happened! Sounds like it was an isolating experience. I'm glad there was some validation even if it was years later. Thanks for sharing
She was way ahead of the curve. If she had done this ten years later, she would have had as many defenders as critics. Twenty years later and it wouldn't have even been a controversy. Such is the status of the Catholic Church. Sinead O'Connor - Rest in peace
I feel like if someone were to do this now it would probably be news for like a few days and then maybe become a meme, but I don’t think the public would really care like they did back then. I really think the amount of information we consume daily would force us to not care as much
She was a real artist and a survivor who owed it to herself and every other abused child to speak up and not be gaslit. She did it! Record companies didn’t make Sinaed -she did -and they should have had her back - artists standup for what they believe in and sometimes fortune and fame follow and sometimes it doesn’t-but the ferocity of her courage to CALL OUT ABUSE is something that rarely happens in the mainstream without a bunch of powerful politics and usually men getting in an uproar over that which they choose to not see. Child abuse creates trauma that ripples through one’s life touching ever other life the traumatized one touched and spanning generations. Listen to her.
This is one of the best TH-cam videos I have seen about Sinead O'Connor: sympathetic, and well-informed. I really enjoyed it! As far as how the SNL incident of O'Connor tearing up the Pope's picture: I think she was absolutely right to do it, and I think she was right to see it in a positive way. Sometimes, even if doing what is in your conscience and your heart seems to bring you trouble in the eyes of the world, you get strength from doing what is right. If fame or the support of people falls away, you know who your real friends are, and you see what a fraud worldly fame and fortune really are.
Yeah but much later the priests they had a huge huge scandal with abusing children and then all of a sudden she did the right thing it's very very expensive sometimes to be ahead of your time to be truly free and liberated you can't expect other people to understand your freedom I guess
I also think that Sinead will be revered a lot more sort of like Tupac for a younger crowd lol. If that makes sense? I also do not think that Madonna will get the only credit for being the riskiest artist of our time!! Both Madonna and Sinead seem to share the crown together after my aunts told me how crazy every thing was with those ladies after the photo and x rated performances.
There is a lot to unpack with this one. I remember Hearing about it and I wasn't quite sure what it was all about. I think I was in 11th grade at the time. I do remember she got all kinds of hate. The next week on SNL Joe Pesci was on and said something to the effect of hurting her as the audience cheered. I also remember Madonna tearing up a picture of Joey Buttafuoco and saying, fight the real enemy during the opening. The whole deal with the Catholic Church sexual abuse didn't resonate with most of the U.S. at the time But I do remember hearing about a priest at or church having allegations against him after he moved to another church. Of course, decades later we see more about the church and all the abuse happening in Ireland, here, and in Canada.
You rocked that! Thank you! I respect her for having the balls especially back then. I watched it live. I would have loved to see Prince’s ❤beautiful face while watching. Lol however, after making it big of off Princes’ generosity giving her basically her stardom in music. She goes on to shit on him after his death. The audacity to do that but then to go on to play this song at shows now is messed up.
I became a big fan of hers recently. I’m in my mid-30’s. I was very little when it happened. It’s hard to explain but it was really crazy and to hear it in full is really frightening to her it live as. A kid!! They sort of tamed it down. Sinead joked about Will Smith’s slap on her Facebook but that was exactly what it was like. Except worse she talking about the Bible. the song just like her screaming into the camera and running off!!! It was weird. So was madonas stuff. Sinead was on tv all the time. But I had no idea she was an artist. But I had no idea that she sang pop music similiar to Madonna around that time. I was thinking more of Garbadge, No Doubt, or Alanis. Madonna was very different to stick with a dance pop sound even in low times lol! Madonna did a lot of just as risky stuff but her music was fine and she able to make a big comeback in the late 90s. Michael and Prince couldn’t really make it as strong as Madonna. Neither really did Sinead. It’s pretty hard on pop radio. I didn’t really hear much about her music or her until maybe about 4 or 5 years ago. She always seemed like more of an activist. But I think she’ll be fine. I didn’t realize that she was able to keep on a pretty big and long career overseas.
For sure. I like the comparison to Madonna as well. And in a way I see her as an activist too. She was always very vocal about her beliefs (even nowadays)
@@JukeboxHistory It was much easier to push TWO talented ladies' like Madonna or Sinead O Connor to the side when you have Whitney Houston. I mean she was it after that BodyGuard Movie! It’s like Beyoncé today. Madonna was considered more like Pink if that makes sense lol! This was a fun chat. Her super bowl performance had Whitney sky rocketing into the air. But Madonna and Sinead have been around a lot longer. That’s why I think things will change.
I perfectly understand Sinead's anger against child abuse and the Catholic Church, however that was very inappropriate of her to tear up a picture of the Pope on a comedy show on national television. Her anger and hostility of Catholicism doesn't make it right for her to exhibit bizarre behavior on a show designed to make people laugh to temporarily forget their troubles. She raised a serious issue and inadvertently killed the last 15 minutes of comedy on SNL. I don't know how bible-literate she is, but even the Good Book says: There's a time and place for everything, every purpose under Heaven.
I have always admired her. I have all her albums and did not know all of this past information about her childhood. Stretched on your grave is by far my favorite song still to this day. Freedom of speech was big in the 90’s and the music represented that… fight the power, killing in the name of.. and I could go on… If someone were to do this now? I do think because social media was not available to us back in the 90’s and we were only provided the information the main stream media was giving us.. that this action done on Live TV made a bigger impact.. today because of social media platforms it would not make as big of an impact. Also, I want to borrow that book to read. 🤍
It was definitely a different time. I agree. It’s kind of hard because of social media now lol. It may seem to tame but the 90s music artists seemed to protest alot more or be more controversial. It’s weird but alot of the rock and pop acts now don’t seem to care now a days. Good memories!

When someone does something unique..... Believe them.
Sinaed has a voice that I can't put my voice on, but it's better than I've ever heard before. I hope you hear this and keep singing

Fair point. Seems we have gotten desensitized to a lot regarding media

Well said. She was one of the best to ever do it. Thank you for watching
how come i’ve never heard of this? great video, definitely deserves more recognition ❤
Yea definitely an interesting event. Thanks for watching!
A beautiful artist and absolutely vindicated years later.
Reflecting she had courage

I think O’Connor thinks the same way! She made a really a powerful statement. Thanks for the kind words
The greatest moment in American Television ever
She was well aware of the evil and where it originated from.
RIP Sinead O'Connor ❤
Yeah but much later the priests they had a huge huge scandal with abusing children and then all of a sudden she did the right thing it's very very expensive sometimes to be ahead of your time to be truly free and liberated you can't expect other people to understand your freedom I guess
I will agree she was ahead of her time with this scandal. She’s one of the first people I know of to bring attention to this. Thanks for watching!

She was right.
What was Terry the owner of? I heard it the same way the closed captions wrote it as a "Jew Shop Owner." What did you mean to say?
Apologies. He was was a juice shop owner

He was abusive to her. She can say what she wants about him.

Sinead O Conner did That😮 I was taken over by mesmerize, totally shocked, yet ,not surprised!
Brawo Shinead
She was just a mentally ill woman, nobody cared about her too much so she needed to make something to stand out
And I am supposed to care about her??????
I have always admired her. I have all her albums and did not know all of this past information about her childhood. Stretched on your grave is by far my favorite song still to this day.
