1. Learning to either not give up on a piece during the "ugly phase" and/or when and that it is _ok_ to give up and start again when something isn't working is only second to the absolute best thing I have ever learned when it comes to art, next to what would become my favourite quote of all time:
"There is nothing noble in trying to be superior to your fellow man; true nobility is being superior to your former self."
These two allowances to let go have been so instrumental to my growth that I base most of my successes in life off of the concepts.
2. These are SO GORGEOUS! I have a series of mixed media art (mostly paintings, but I do have a pencil crayon piece mixed in there) that I'm currently working on and although I already finished a butterfly piece, I think I'll use your technique for either magical butterflies (the other piece has "realistic" butterflies) or moths. So thank you for the inspiration!!
3. Not using white (technically gouache) watercolour is kind of an elitest rule. Sure, teeeeechnically using white makes the piece mixed media and not actually watercolour, but now a days, who cares? Telling people they're not real watercolour artists because they like adding white details later is just gatekeeping. It really just means, even on a technical level, that they're watercolour, gouache, AND mixed media artists. So anyone who reads this and likes to tell people they're not watercolour artists, please keep what I've said in mind. More people will share in our love for art if we are inclusive! ♡
Thaank you so much for sharing this tutorial. I love all the butterflies, but the blue one is just a little more special. Perhaps because it is a classic butterfly. I do like the whimsical butterflies too.

I raise Monarchs and as they age their wings become torn and ragged and look like a couple of your beautiful paintings. I will try to do some of this style in Monarch colors. Thanks for the lesson! My favorite is the pink/green butterfly--a pretty color combination.

I cannot wait to try painting a butterfly this way, it is so beautiful and magical looking. My only negative comment is, I dislike the way your camera keeps switching back and forth on those two angles so often and so quickly. Just about the time I try to focus my eyes on your work, the camera switches over to that other angle. I would enjoy a little more time with your hand out of the way to see the progress. Also it would be nice to know some of the colors you use.
