Well considering that DeckHD is barely an upgrade at all I think the price will be fine. I got one just to get one, but it's not even worth the battery life to run a game above 800P on DeckHD. DeckSight on the other hand still looks good when running a game @ 720P and my testing shows the battery life is double vs 1080P. So 1080P when you're plugged in and 720P when your out on battery......either way it's a better experience than the stock LCD.
Thanks bud. I just got done with some power testing and I'll be posting a video about that soon. I'd like to hear your feedback on that, let me know if there's anything I missed
Super Cool! I was looking for this for a very long time already and got to a point where i will be ditching my lcd model and buy the oled, but i was hesitant to waste money, also i am not into the deckhd its not that big of a deal but this oled of yours means a big deal to me, since i do a lot of electronics tinkering so its fun for me, the only difference is that the oled seems to have the same thicker bezel like the lcd on par to the official steam deck oled which has slimmer side edge bezel. Hope to hear more from you! thank you so much for doing this!
That's why I did it! DeckSight has thicker bezels top and bottom but smaller bezels on the sides compared to the LCD. DeckSight is the same size as the LCD but different aspect ratio. The OLED Steam Deck uses a 7.4" OLED vs 7" so the screen is bigger, which is why the bezels are smaller.
With OLED, you wouldn't even notice the black bars. I only use 16:10 displays, and I'm so happy the Deck has one. I wouldn't use anything else (other than 3:2).
@@SindayDeacon that's marketing speak, decksight uses a newer, better touch controller than the Steam Deck LCD did. Not sure what the OLED Deck uses but I'd imagine it is at least as good
Thanks for the answer. Alot of my uses for the steam deck relies the touch screen. It was also one of my main reasons I was considering getting an OLED steam deck. Hearing this makes me so much more excited for the campaign to launch!@@blazini
i am definitely interested. would prefer native 720 and higher refresh than 1080p, even though you said its theoretically possible to downscale. would prefer pixel perfect 720. still, love that this is a thing
@@ZachAR3 i understand that, which is why i would prefer a 720p panel instead of a 1080p panel. 720p native is visually better than a 1080p downscaled to 720p since the downscale isnt pixel-perfect. that aside, this is still nice
@@Daxiongmao87 Yeah fair, but this is far too late in the project for that to happen lol. He already has physical parts and the only thing that could get improved to my knowledge is the cable layout so it's more like the stock if the funding goals are reached. I would also prefer 720p native, but with fsr 2 running at quality should be about the same performance cost so it's doable atleast.
Would it be possible to turn up some of the saturation/vividness for the panel via software? That's been Samsung's approach to fix the colors with anti-glare OLED screens on their S24 Ultra and Tab S10+/Ultra.
This looks absolutely fantastic. I've been waiting for this kind of upgrade since the OLED model was first announced. I’d definitely buy it when the campaign launches... but the 1080p resolution and 16:9 aspect ratio quickly killed my interest. Was there a technical reason for these choices? Are there no 720p 16:10 OLED panels available on the market or something like that? You mentioned in the video that if the project is successful, the panel could be fully customizable. Any chance we might see an alternative panel model with those specs? Either way, even if it’s not for me, this project is amazing, and I wish you every success. This is truly a great accomplishment.
DeckSight is 1080P, That's not something that is going to change. By "Custom" I meant the connector placement will change for convenience. The panel specs will not change. 720P is 16:9 not 16:10 so I'm not quite sure what that means. As I explained, there is the possibility of hardware scaled lower resolutions at higher framerates but the panel itself will remain 1080P and those modes are not guaranteed.
Sorry. Everytime i said 720p, i meant 800p. Stupid me. Thanks for the clarifications. Unfortunately, for now, this is not for me, but i hope you get enough backers to bring the project forwards. Good luck!
Nearly a week late but I have a one question: And that is with this newer OLED display on my LCD Steam Deck would this mean more play time and better battery life on my Steam Deck LCD after this mod. How's the battery life on your Steam Deck after this mod is it better or not!
Working on battery testing now. I've already tested DeckSIght at 1080P and running a game at 720P, which is roughly equivelent to the stock LCD's 800P resolution I just have to do the stock LCD yet. It should be obvious that running a game on the Deck at 1080P will use more power, but I think the fact that you can set a game at 720P and still have it look better overall than the stock LCD is an underappreciated option.
Why does it have to be 1080p? I would buy this mod instantly if it were 800p 90hz (or even 60hz honestly). But the higher resolution instantly kills my interest unfortunately.
I had a feeling someone would eventually do it! Amazing 🤩 Any idea why Valve did not release an LCD to OLED upgrade kit? Is it because some hardware incompatibility or simply because they already have an OLED model?
Yes I did that to mine. Original sticks and OLED sticks have a single wire each, but the chip it sits on are different and aren’t swappable. iFixIT offers OLED sticks (I got a third party from amazon). Simply desolder the 4 wires total and resolder the new sticks to the old board. No problems whatsoever
No, the framerate isn't a limitation of the Steam Deck's GPU (Although it would be anyway). The limitation due to the amount of data that the Deck can push. Right now we can run it stable at 1080P @ 80hz uncompressed. If we can squeeze in compression and it works well it will be a higher framerate at 1080P, but I don't think it will be as high as 120hz @1080P
That's cool to see, but 16/9 and 1080p is a big no no for me, and I don't think I'm the only one, If you can make a full custom panel I would go 16/10 800p (or 1600p if you really want greater definition) and if possible the same size as the oled SD, that I would buy !
@blazini I didn't mean to criticize your work, I do think it's really cool ! But the way I use my deck, aspect ratio and screen size are more important than OLED quality, so for me, OLED would be an upgrade only if I could retain these
@@MadMaxGyver Well I don't take that as criticism of the work, that's just a choice that had to be made. There will always be people that say you should have went the other way and that's fine, but you actually already have 2 choices that might serve you better, either the OLED model Steam Deck, or the other 3rd party screen upgrade for the LCD deck.
