  • In his groundbreaking talk, Dr. Alberto Espay questions traditional hypotheses regarding the causes, and therefore the treatments, of neurodegeneration, diseases such as Huntington's, Alzheimer's, and Parkinson's, discussing what we can do to bring about meaningful change for the sake of patients today and tomorrow.
    Dr. Espay is the Endowed Chair of the James J. and Joan A. Gardner Center for Parkinson’s disease at the University of Cincinnati. He has published over 300 peer-reviewed research articles and 8 books, including Common Movement Disorders Pitfalls, which received the Highly Commended BMA Medical Book Award in 2013 and Brain Fables, the Hidden History of Neurodegenerative Diseases and a Blueprint to Conquer them, coauthored with Parkinson patient and advocate Benjamin Stecher, selected by the Association of American Publishers for the PROSE Award honoring the best scholarly work in Neuroscience published in 2020. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

    So they thought the clumped proteins in the brain were the problem, which led to them using methods to remove them but this generally resulted in making patients worse (brain shrinkage). Now they are adding more of the loose flexible proteins to the brain to bring back to normal levels and this seems to be working to stop the diseases. Ongoing they are still looking to remedy for the invisible cause that causes the protein clumping in the first place and the presumably the reduction/ loss of loose proteins .

    I'm almost finished with my graphic memoir of how I used my health and fitness knowledge to stop my mother with mild dementia from forgetting me, and it worked. I tricked her off caffeine, then no prescription meds, forced her/tricked her/incentivized her to drink water, kept her away from high fructose corn syrup and other poison, because they made her mean and delusional, and kept her away from gluten. I had a lot of crazy things happen to me that was not my mother’s fault. First I had to fight a nursing home in probate court for 2 months who illegally held my mother for the insurance money. The police put her in handcuffs, and that wasn’t needed or her fault, an Emergency Room doctor gave her an anti-psychotic because that is “just what they do”, and that caused more problems, and in the end, hospice listed her death certificate wrong for a reason, I can only guess was for financial. The dept. of public health told me that nobody verifies and monitors death certificates either..

    That seems hilariously obvious after thinking about it. You need the regular proteins in order for the brain to be functional - unless you're replacing the curled-up proteins with working proteins or in some way increasing the amount of regular proteins, ,all you are doing is removing brain tissue without helping the regular proteins.

  • @feedbackzaloop

    That is really similar to the history of research on lactate in muscles during exercise: for decades the indicator, a byproduct, of the process was specifically targeted without actual understanding of the process. And now it is treated from another way round at the level of initial materials and fuel. Still not caring about the machinery.
    Oh, and there was a relatevely recent paper on serotonin and depression - another "correlation not causation" example.

    • @meganbaker9116
      @meganbaker9116 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was thinking about that too: how wrong the thinking was in both cases. A huge amount of damage and death has resulted from the Medical Model theory of depression; I imagine many have died as well from the wrongheaded thinking about these proteins. I haven't seen much coverage of these two long-term mistakes in the mainstream press. Hmm. Why would that be?

    So what should we be doing to prevent us and our loved ones from getting these diseases?

    • @leeleeturn
      @leeleeturn ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Exercise. The more steps you get on your Fitbit the lower your risk for dementia. Eat to lower inflammation. Socialize, and lower your stress levels, both of which also lower inflammation. Eat less simple carbohydrates so you won't get glucose intolerance. Don't delay on getting hearing aids if you need them. Poor hearing is highly associated with dementia. Probably because it interferes with your social interactions and your interactions with the world in general. Try to lose excess weight (causes inflammation). By excess I mean approaching the obesity cut off or beyond. A little extra weight is actually protective for older people. Learn a new hobby especially one which taxes your brain a little bit so it will form many new connections. An art class like pottery, sculpture, drawing etc. Or learn a new musical instrument. Or a new language. A lot of Spanish people Spanish speaking people come to where I work so I decided to learn Spanish. I'm using an app called Duolingo, which I find very, very motivating. I'm 65 years old and absolutely determined and almost hooked LOL. And here's one that goes entirely against conventional wisdom: if you're an older person, don't lower your LDL cholesterol. High LDL in older people is protective against cancer, infection, dementia and atherosclerosis. Older people with high LDL live longer. If you don't believe me, Google this: 'LDL-C does not cause cardiovascular disease: a comprehensive review of the current literature'. One of the most astonishing - and infuriating - articles I've ever read, and I'm a big reader of research articles. The way evidence has been distorted and articles cherry picked for earlier 'reviews' of the literature. I'm delighted now to have high LDL. If you are on statins, or someone is trying to put you on statins, you especially need to read this!

    Completely makes sense:. Seems now the goal is to figure out the tools to delivering the strengthening particles to the brain:. My first thought is using blood as a delivery device as it is in constant circulatory flow into and out of the brain. Hmmm how do we get past the screening device? Hmm some kind of iv injection.... It is really about balance, right? Ok my brain is now thinking about how proper gastro digestion depends on balance:. One cannot remove an element without replacing, almost like an algebraic formula.......thinking on this, thank you for the progressive push!
