It’s extremely common that successful alumni come back to give a speech and receive an honorary PhD? I feel like a lot of the time the people chosen are less famous than MKBHD.
"Purpose is a tool." I love this and thank you for not putting all the emphasis on telling them they should only do what "makes them happy". Success is harder than that.
I love this speech. It feels more like a friend or relative giving you advice rather than a preach session as most commencement speeches do. Congrats to MKPHD and the graduate class of 2024!
Congrats to you Marques and all the best to you. Great speech. Time does fly very quickly. It’s funny - I worked in engineering and IT for 25 years and then became a professor of engineering for 15. I recently retired. In some ways, it seemed as though certain things in life took FOREVER to happen, yet looking back, it feels like such a short short time. When. I was getting my Masters I nearly quit because it was taking too long and taking up too much time. I went to the Dean and told him I was going to drop out. He reached under his desk and brought out a very large stack of paper. I asked him what that was. He told me that these were students who started but dropped out. He told me that 5 years from now you’ll look back at now and realize that 5 years has passed whether or not you do your degree. You can decide now to continue and in 5 years you’ll be glad you did. I stuck with it and later went on to get my PhD. It was a lot of work but it allowed me to do things in life that would not have been possible had I not kept going. To all those who are graduating in 2024 - congrats! To those struggling or thinking of stopping - remember that in 5 years you’ll be 5 years older independent of your choice. Time does fly when you look back at life. Marques is right, too about passion. I worked in electrical and computer engineering, starting when personal computers were just getting started. (I am the same age as Bill Gates and the same age that Steve Jobs would have been). I was always passionate about computers and technology. It was and is my hobby. I also made it my career. It’s much easier to make a career out of something you deeply care about. Find your passion.
As a Stevens student who graduated yesterday and saw the speech live, you killed it man. And as a fellow Stevens Ultimate Frisbee alum, it was awesome to see the highlights in your intro video. Ducks fly together 🦆
Your speech was really touching, and you picked up on the most important point, I believe. Most people, including myself a couple of decades ago, start out with goals like making good money or, if self-employed, thinking about independence. These can work for many, but real satisfaction comes from a holistic approach: working on things you truly love day in and day out. Because at the end of the day, we have to realize that life is a marathon rather than a sprint. Great job!
Funny enough my physics professor did a speech an he did not hold back he straight used chatgpt and said he used chatgpt 😂. It went like "im to lazy to write a speech so here something chatgpt wrote"

So true... Focus on your passion. Focus on what exites you. Sometimes "THE TRUE" passion can be overlooked as just something you like a lot. And as something that might be out of reach/impossible. Take note of those subtle things that excite you, cuz it's easy to get distracted when work (a job) begins to point you away with it's own shiny things.

Well articulated and spot on. There's no pre-defined path in life. It's a journey, not a destination. There's so much going on in the world today and a reminder that time is fluid and we have choices in life is well timed. Your honest take is refreshing. Keep on doing you!
I have never commented on any TH-cam videos but i have to say it . This is the best Speech I have ever heard, it’s inspired me a lot. Awesome speech man!

Was nice seeing you marques was super fan girling when I saw you walk into PNC!!
So proud of you
What excites you? 😏😏

@@Mr.DISRESPECTI’d be excited if I had it too ngl
What if nothing really excites you? How does one function and find purpose?
