Congrats to you Marques and all the best to you. Great speech. Time does fly very quickly. It’s funny - I worked in engineering and IT for 25 years and then became a professor of engineering for 15. I recently retired. In some ways, it seemed as though certain things in life took FOREVER to happen, yet looking back, it feels like such a short short time. When. I was getting my Masters I nearly quit because it was taking too long and taking up too much time. I went to the Dean and told him I was going to drop out. He reached under his desk and brought out a very large stack of paper. I asked him what that was. He told me that these were students who started but dropped out. He told me that 5 years from now you’ll look back at now and realize that 5 years has passed whether or not you do your degree. You can decide now to continue and in 5 years you’ll be glad you did. I stuck with it and later went on to get my PhD. It was a lot of work but it allowed me to do things in life that would not have been possible had I not kept going. To all those who are graduating in 2024 - congrats! To those struggling or thinking of stopping - remember that in 5 years you’ll be 5 years older independent of your choice. Time does fly when you look back at life. Marques is right, too about passion. I worked in electrical and computer engineering, starting when personal computers were just getting started. (I am the same age as Bill Gates and the same age that Steve Jobs would have been). I was always passionate about computers and technology. It was and is my hobby. I also made it my career. It’s much easier to make a career out of something you deeply care about. Find your passion.

Your speech was really touching, and you picked up on the most important point, I believe. Most people, including myself a couple of decades ago, start out with goals like making good money or, if self-employed, thinking about independence. These can work for many, but real satisfaction comes from a holistic approach: working on things you truly love day in and day out. Because at the end of the day, we have to realize that life is a marathon rather than a sprint. Great job!

@@thomasthetrain2224 Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and try to make friends as best as you can! Everyone says clubs are the best way, but they didn’t really work out for me since I never really went thru with them and the clubs are pretty small at Stevens, but def try to join some because you never know. I met one of my best friends at Stevens by just coming up to him and asking him for help on some calculus homework since I remember he was in my class, and we’ve been great friends since. Other than that, enjoy your college experience, don’t go too hard on yourself, qnd prioritize studying but also going out with friends and doing things you enjoy. You will have a lot of free time and you’re only young once, so make sure you try new things to discover what you really like and dislike :)

Even if there’s no financial or logical sense in the moment, if you follow what you dream is and what you believe in, everything else will follow in the future.
    Edit:
Just wanted to add that this is so much better than the Mark Rober commencement speech, the ridiculous arrogance, snootyness, and complete lack of actual good advice in that one was hard to handle.

However, I got into astronomy and astrophotography.... and now 6 years later, I still stay up really late getting cold, however, that has now become my most successful career path because I truly love it. I feel really connected and in control of what I do, it's so much more enjoyable and that's how I've managed to keep it up. It's been the best decision I made... to follow the path that you enjoy and care about.

It is likely something a few degrees of separation from what you had intended, but when you talked about finding your purpose and directing your energy and effort into something that gets you excited, what rang in my mind was getting married. I do want a career in data analysis as my degree would suggest, but your speech helped to cement in my mind that what I really care about is building a life with someone that improves and fulfills the two of us. Long after the direction of my career has changed due to AI and future developments in technology, I hope to have created something of my own that is beautiful, unbreakable, and inimitable.
