- Two years ago, James Charles was one of the most popular names when discussing the TH-cam mainstream. He was playing Minecraft with PewDiePie, hosting his own reality TV Show called "Instant Influencer", all while his personal TH-cam channel was clearing well over 100 million views per month. However, over the last year, for James Charles, things have changed… significantly. He’s lost over 1.5 million subscribers equivalent to losing more than 100,000 subs per month, his average viewership per video has declined from well over 10 million to a little over 1 million, all while his twitter hasn’t seen any positive follower growth during the same time period. You might say that James Charles has become the poster child victim of internet cancellations. However, we should use the term “victim” lightly, as the death of his career has certainly been self-inflicted, and could have easily been avoided. Numerous controversies led TH-camrs such as H3H3 and Keemstar to call James Charles out for his actions and his multiple "fake" apology videos.

The worst part of James is people rooted for him when he was genuinely being canceled by other makeup icons who were trying to "expose" him but then revealed himself to potentially be exactly what they were accusing him of being. It's crazy how giant names can just vanish. I never watched James Charles, or any of the genre's he was included in but I still knew his name. Even as a non viewer I had an idea of who he was until one day I didn't. That minute level of consciousness that I had faded to a point that I literally forgot about him completely. Now I know why. I should also address the experience that I had with James as well: I should start by saying that this was in July of 2022 just after I had turned 12, James Charles added me on Discord and we started chatting to each other, at first it seemed like any other, however only 20 minutes later he started sending me nudes of himself and after I told him that I was only 12 he started asking me for nudes myself, I immediately blocked him and unfriended him on Discord and showed the evidence to my parents and they were able to talk to him and told him to be very careful with me because I was only 12.
I am sorry if I get criticised for not coming out about this earlier but I’m doing it now and thank you guys for the support ❤

I just wanted to add it just makes me sad and angry James choose to use his influence the way he does. A lot of my teen beans, especially my LGBTQ beans look up to him as a role model. They see a confident gay man. James has said before he didn't realize how much influence he really has and the impact he has. But really he still DOESNT. He has the power to literally lift up an entire generation of young queer youth and yet he uses his social media like a tinder.
I'm a 24 year old non binary queer bean so I'm essentially a gay elder at this point (lol) and even in my work when I work with children and they talk to me about this kind of stuff you see the difference when it clicks in their minds there are adults who are like them, living happy lives. You didn’t mention this, but his former assistant also came out with an interview/editorial about her experience working with him, how she had to do his laundry, clean his house, make sure he ate, and get him to make videos because he simply didn’t want to. I think the problem is more that their apologies are consistently hollow and inauthentic, even on face value. I've been watching a video series by Mickey Atkins who is a licensed therapist, analysing apology videos, and they're consistently low-effort and fail to demonstrate actual personal growth on the wrong-doer's part.
But to be fair, it takes a very careless or predatory person to be doing the stuff that warrants a public apology video to begin with, so I don't really think it's the apology itself that's condemning people to irrelevance and shame but more the personality that led them to do unacceptable things.

I would actually disagree with this being a case of bad press management. Like one of these comments at the end mentioned, it's crazy that he was outed as being what he is but yet it was seemingly forgiven. Considering what an effect that *should* have had, apparently his management of it could hardly have gone better.
I'm gonna be honest, I have no idea how James hasn't gotten arrested yet. I mean, James' behavior in these incidents are unhealthy obsessions and practically predatory behavior, and even evidence of these scandals have presented themselves multiple times in the form of several people coming forward about James pressuring straight men into hanging out and sending inappropriate pics to underage men. Maybe it was decided that the slow decline of James' popularity was his punishment, who knows?
