      Can you imagine getting intimate at place #1, and then Dumbledore goes "did you put your name in the goblet of fire?"
      I won't spoil beyond that, but all the places that were listed were funny in their own ways.

    I love to hear that despite Carlton’s one experience with the love hotel, by and large, things seem to be getting better for queer people in Japan. I was on the JET Program starting in 1991 (I’m 54 now) and posted to a tiny fishing village in northern Hokkaido. Gay foreigners weren’t even really out to each other very much back then. I lived in Hokkaido for 3 years (2 years as an ALT, 1 year as a CIR) and then moved to Tokyo for 2 years working for CLAIR, the government organization that runs the JET Program, before returning to the US. Despite a couple of trips to 2-Chome, I was closeted the whole time. And in the early 90s, there were no cell phones let alone Grindr, and no Japanese wanted to be with a foreigner because of the fear of HIV/AIDS. So even Tokyo could be pretty lonely. I’m really happy to watch your videos to see that with your generation, things continue to get better. Keep the content coming! And, I hope it doesn’t sound too creepy coming from a guy my age, but yeah, Carlton is gorgeous.

    Hi guys, I enjoyed this video today!! I am originally from Okinawa and I have been living in Europe since 2009. I am glad to hear that Carlton enjoyed living in Okinawa for 4 years. It is a small island, but as Carton said, there are quite a lot of gay bars in Naha. I haven't gone back to Okinawa for 14 years since I came to Europe, I was planning to go back in 2020, though. Due to the pandemic, I couldn't go back.
    The best of luck with living in Tokyo and your job!!

    I’m not gay, but I found the discussion fascinating. I’d also back up that unless anyone despises city life, people are best starting out living in Tokyo. It simply has so many more places of interest and a bigger international network.

    • @theonh9365
      @theonh9365 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Yes, but what makes Okinawa special compare to other countryside cities in Japan is that there are a lot more stuff like they mentioned gay bars, international hotels, international schools or Starbucks. It’s 1/100th of Japanese population, yet,it has more bars than Yokohama or Kyoto which their population is more than 3X. It’s because there is no near by cities and a lot of people don’t like to live in Tokyo but of course there are more job opportunities in Kyoto and Yokohama than Okinawa and the salary is better in the mainland.

    I think it's because many Okinawans see the military as an occupying force. In the past the soldiers in that base were extremely problematic. There were cases of rape, pedophilia, and rudeness from the soldiers and they rarely get punished properly. Those were years ago, I don't know how they are now

    As a non gay but something not straight, I really like hearing queers talk about community in different places. Some people might hate the word community but the truth is we are separate from the straight world and it's probably in our best interest to lean into that difference instead of trying to seek solidarity in the hetero world. Great congo and first time on this channel. I have been to Tokyo, I didn't find it mind blowing like most people. I'm already from a mega city that is wild in its own way, but it was a beautiful experience ❤

    I worked for a year (1983-84) on the MEF (Mombusho English Fellows) program. There were 102 of us from the States, it was very competitive, and similar to Carlton, I didn't get what I requested. I had said I'd be open to going to somewhere in or near to Tokyo as well as one of the other islands (Kyushuu, Hokkaido, etc.). I was open to going to the Kansai region because I'd previously been a student in Kobe. I was not interested in going to Tohoku because it was out of the way and hard to get to (back then). When I was accepted I was assigned to work in Aomori Prefecture and there were only six of us in all of Tohoku! Had a really good experience.
    Later, when I was living in Tokyo, I worked for the American nonprofit office in Akasaka Mitsuke that co-ran the MEF Program with the Japanese government. WIth my Japanese colleagues, I coordinated the MEFs orientations as well engaging in all the other administrative work that went with running the program. When the MEF program switched to the JET program, I left my position. I'm sure they are more careful now about background checks and the like. Back then things were a bit looser and one year an MEF was arrested because someone tipped off the police that he was receiving drugs in the mail. The American was quickly deported and it was a big scandal.

However, having been living overseas for more than two decades,being originally from Japan, I think the US is the country that needs international consciousness education to be better aware of the rest of the world, on cultural diversities, histories of other civilisations, geography and racial equity, much more than any other countries.

    From the JET webpage the salary appears to be pretty low. Was that ever an issue while living in Japan? By current US standards the salary per year is not livable if you reside in a large city. Just curious as I'd love to apply and be in the JET program.

    • @soggymoggytravels
      @soggymoggytravels 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I suspect it’s still the case that you get heavily subsidised housing, plus the JET salary was at least tax free. Things may have changed, but I’m sure you will get added benefits that increase the overall remuneration. Plus, if you live in the countryside, rental costs can be surprisingly inexpensive. For 95% of any English language teaching job that is not JET, even in Tokyo, gross salary will not exceed 250k per month. If you need action, I’d definitely recommend Tokyo or Osaka, despite the higher costs, so on that basis, applying for JET is a gamble.

    I have been watching for a while . Been out as a gay man since 1983 - yes i am old (60) Your channel annoys me at times because it perpetuates all the cliche about being gay . I like rock music and goth and alt , i like hiking and camping and will be hiking across Japan for two months in 2024 - wild camping ( literally ) . I don't care what underwear you buy , your life style , the drinks you drink . As a Brit I suppose i am a sarcastic political queer who likes hairy blokes and mountaineering ! I will be in Tokyo in March 2024 - which bear bar should i visit or perhaps better what punk tock alt bar ? I have always enjoyed Frank Chickens ( Japanese Punk Rock Band )

      I will be hiking 1000km of the Manichuku coastal trail - sleeping in a tent - cooking my own food . Not very gay !!!

    Funny I just saw him in Tokyo doing a performance with two Japanese guys on the street. They were in leather and using whip cream. Yea I took a video lol. I really liked the one Japanese guy but don’t know his name.
