Pavarotti could not sing the C when he grew older... I have 2 videos where he sings lower than C. La boheme and Il trovatore... B natural... I like his voice better though, when he is older. Color is more beautiful then... Sabbatini is great ...
Can anyone explain how a tenor with such sterling qualities didn't become as famous as others with lesser qualities? He was a good looking devil and sang like an angel. Has he stopped singing to switch to conducting? So many singers are here today and gone tomorrow.

Sabbatini is an extraordinarily talented man, with a solid musical background who always dreamead about conducting and saw singing as a shortcut to it. He is now conducting and helping young singers with his expertise of singing and can still sing very well. You can find an interview from 1997, barely ten years after his debut, where he states that his goal was conducting and that he would do that in more ten years, i.e., 2007, precisely the year of his retirement. His only defect is not his fault: he lacks a beautiful timbre in my opinion. Otherwise, what an artist! And what a serious and prepared professional! He sang his repertoire, never tried to sing roles which didn't suit his voice.
Here is a FULL Lyric Tenor (Gedda was another) who could sing this style of music (At least how it is usually sung nowadays). Florez is certainly a contender & I did hear his Carnegie Hall debut but besides his remarkable high voice, I found that there was little to interest me in his singing. Perhaps I should see & hear him in comic opera. There maybe he shows more dramatic personality. I have no idea of this factor in regards Sabbatini OR how he if istill singing these days (2016) but his FAUST aria is certainly right up there with Björling, Di Stefano, & Gedda with an even better dimuendo, for whatever thats worth.

Lo he escuchado cantar Salut Demeure más de veinte veces, y es una de las mejores grabaciones en vivo de ese aria. ¡Era un gran tenor!

It’s not that his voice isn’t beautiful, his timbre is not distinctive enough, not immediately recognizable. Great singer, though.
