I am so very thankful for your efforts and advise in this video. I leave for Namibia tomorrow and will certainly change my gear selection. Thank you for sharing your wisdom. Priceless!
'It's almost like an human zoo'. Exactly what that came to my mind watching other tourism and safari videos of that place while planning my Namibia trip. Thanks BVS.
You said at the end that "this was a long boring video". It was anything But that !!! It will be my "go to" resource when I get around to planning a trip to Namibia. You promised more of them and I'm looking forward to those. N.B. it reminded me of a large scale version of your guide to the Cinque Terre (I've been following your blogs that long!).
I watched this video when it came out and i'm watching it again now that i'm planning my first trip to Namibia! Great content, so many good tips! Thanks a lot Brendan!!
This is full of “useful and valuable” information! We are just starting to plan our Namibia trip and I look forward to looking at more of your videos and checking your other sources of info too. I subscribed just watching this first video. Thank you!
That was a great and useful guide. I have no intention of going but felt I had to leave a comment. You are one of the most selfless photographers on here. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge freely. It is a refreshing change. You are a top lad.
Thanks much for sharing all your learnings on Namibia, Brendan. A visit should be on everyone's bucket list. So I'm sure this will be useful to so many. Looking forward to Cape Town content as that place is amazing too.
Very useful info dude, it was long (pun intended) but very usable info, thanks for taking the time to do this....oh and by the way love the podcast, i can't comment or rate in spotify but is coming great. Cheers.
excellent Brendan ! Thank you so much for all the information. I went to Namibia two years ago and you brought me back to all this great places! You made my day !
Great insider video. You must be the hardest working travel photographer that exist! I am not sure how you manage it all but kudos to you. Keep producing out great content but don't forget to rest once in a while :)
man you really go all over the world! love your photography and your channel! thanks for sharing this great content with us and i really really enjoyed watching this!
Hi Brendan, I love your channel and watch religously - I am planning a trip to Namibia with 2 days/ nights in each location (fly in) and my itinerary is as follows: NamibRand Reserve area, Soossusvlei (I have added a day = 3), Swakopmund / Walvis Bay, Skeleton Coast, Kaokoland, Damaraland, Etosha NP, South (Ongava) and East (Onguma), and I am trying to decide which to add another day too. If I added a day which would you choose? Thanks Cindy
Thank you so much for this Brendan. My wife and I should have gone on a long awaited trip to Namibia last month but waiting for lockdown to end and borders to open to get this trip on track. I lived in Whk in early 2000's and flew all over the place as flight paramedic incl several lodges to medivac tourists and vowed to return one day on a 4x4 trip. My first trip (from Pta) will be the southern part. Very helpful and I made lotsa notes. Good job.
Excellent info Brendan Ideal for planning maybe the image was a little choppy Which countries are you going to visit besides South Africa? BTW how do you get to that northern part of Namibia? By road through SA?
Really enjoyed this video and it was pretty concise so well done. I saw a picture of Deadvlei back in 2007 and had wanted to go there ever since. After a few cancelled trips I finally got to spend a couple of weeks touring Namibia in 2019 and it was everything I expected and more. What a wonderful country, especially for a photographer. Highlights were a dawn helicopter flight over the dunes in Namib-Naukluft Park, and staying in the fantastic Wolwedans Dunes Lodge in the NabidRand reserve; what a place.

Amazing information Bredan! thx What about astrophotography in Deadvlei? is the only way to park outside and walk the 3km into the area?
Answered above, because I should have mentioned this: In Windhoek if you go to the NWR office you can apply for a night permit. But, that likely means paying a commercial permit. From what I've heard, it's expensive... but possible.
Excellent job with the travel and photography guide on Namibia! I really like how everything was presented, and it is a very good introduction to visiting Namibia. Now I need to plan a trip there someday!
Super helpful video guide as we plan a 3-week self-drive in Namibia next month! Probably a long shot, but any idea if it’s possible to rent gear in Windhoek and return it by mail? Our itinerary looks to be ending in Maun vs. going back to Windhoek and I’d love to rent a telephoto (we’re traveling full time so my Tamron 150-600 is home in the states, sadly)...
This was by far everything except boring!!! Excellent!! Really like your vlogs too, but that was just superb. You are an experienced traveler and it's great to have information up front (and let's be honest, everyone with a camera wants to go to Namibia...)
This video was such a gift, Brendan! Thanks for posting it. I have two questions. First, what was the name of the gear rental store in Windhoek you use to rent your lenses? Second, you've said that a 4x4 isn't necessary. Except for the two places you mentioned, do you think it would be feasible to do a self-drive in a rented 23 ft. 2WD RV with standard RV ground clearance?
Capture Namibia is the lens rental. And, yeah, absolutely. Just make sure you have spare tires on hand in case of flats as the rural shops might not have tires your size.
Thanks for doing this Brendan, great timing, am self-driving Northern Namibia next month so this was a great watch, really useful to know about the difference between Etosha East & West. Cheers!
Hi Brendan. Chanced upon your video and what a great guide you have made. We are grp of photographers intend to shoot star trails and milky in Deadvlei. As I understand gate 2 closed at ard 8pm, how is it possible to shoot? Some star trails take 3 hrs or more and I hv seen beautiful images of it. Can anyone allowed to stay inside the gate for astro photography?
Hi, if you go to the NWR office in Windhoek they sometimes offer permits. But it's really rare. And I'm not sure how long it takes for them to issue one.
Hi Brendan, Quick question for you : I don't see you often without filters regarding landscape photography. Do you recommand to "always" put one on ? I want to bring my photo to the next level, and I wonder if it could be a good choice to invest in Lee Filters and try to use it the most possible :) What do you think ?
I don't always put one on. But, I do a lot. Go check out my video guide on using filters. I think it's called a complete guide to using filters. It should give you a good understanding on how you can take things to the next level.
You mentioned the drones. It has been impossible for me to obtain the permit needed for my October trip. I have a mini 4 pro and desperately want to bring it and be responsible with where it is flown. Should I just give up on this or?
It's impossible, man. Even with permits, you can only fly outside of national parks. Don't want to disuade you, but it's definitely tough to do. You could email the guy at Capture Namibia. He has a license. He might be able to give you some guidance.
In Windhoek if you go to the NWR office you can apply for a night permit. But, that likely means paying a commercial permit. From what I've heard, it's expensive... but possible.
Very well put together and detailed, Brendan. Now.... some low life gave you a thumbs down I see but you should ignore that! Keep going this way and I don't expect perfection with the green screen etc (just as usual... try a wireless lav mic to remove the echo but don't sweat it hehe).
Not too hot yet, and it's the dry season in Etosha. If you go to Etosha during the rainy season, the sightings can be pretty sparse. In the dry season, they need to hit the artifical waterholes for water so they're easier to see.
I have to say, we just stayed at Ai-Ais, not camping, in the lodge itself, and the service and food was really low standard for the price we paid. The hot springs were very nice, so I would still go again for that, but the service and food really left us disappointed. Maybe camping there is better. There were people hiking in Fish River Canyon so you can hike there now.
Pointer! IF you decide to drive from parking 1 to 2 going to Deadvlei, be very careful and hit the pedal. There are big chances you’ll get stuck in the sand there. Trust me, it took a local crew 6 hours to retrieve my 4x4.
I very much like your position towards a visit of the Himba village. On our guided tour last year we felt very uneasy during that visit. Closed to "civilized" areas of Namibia it looked like as they, mainly the women, are being artificially kept (forced to stay?) in the life stile of former ages. My strong recommendation: do not visit that village!
Yo! Yup the problem was the green screen want evenly "green" and the light reflection was an issue. Definitely not an Eos R issue, and definitely a "Brendan trying something new" issue. Haha
Brendan van Son thanks mate... will watch this tomorrow. Am packing and leaving for the airport first thing back to very very cold uk. Booo!!! Vietnam is incredible!! Jase

I visited Namibia in 2017. Back then I used your old vlogs for guide. So it's nice to see this now.
Sorry it wasn't ready back then! Haha
I will be visiting Namibia this month, so I re-watched this video. This is very useful information, thanks Brandon !
This is a tremendously valuable video for anyone going to Namibia. Your photos and enthusiasm make us all want to go there. Thank you

Ok, so that was pretty amazing. Comprehensive, information packed, and not sure if you stopped to breath in between :) Very helpful. Thank you.

Namibia is not on my to go list (I prefer rainy and cold places...), but your vlogs may have changed my mind :), nevertheless, it looks incredible !
I heard Wilderness Safaris has two camps ( Kulala and little kulala) have private access going to the national park
Do you have any information on shooting Deadvlei at night? I'm having trouble finding info online

The food service in the NWR has gone absolutely horrible in the past year. I've noticed a huge drop in the quality over the years as well.

Haha. I'm terrible with names in any country. Must be my Dutch roots
While self-driving is possible, it's hardly ideal. Book a guide and a 4x4, and you will see a whole new Namibia.
