    Andy, funny enough I was in Namibia two weeks ago and I downloaded a few of your videos on TH-cam to occupy me and brush up on some composition tips for my trip. It was very helpful and I got some of my favorite ever photos on that trip. I hope one day I can join you on a workshop. I was just on a standard group tour and I found it very difficult sometimes as the only photographer on the trip. But nevertheless, Namibia is a truly and uniquely beautiful place that I will be heading back to someday.

      Oh and by the way, for your future travels to Namibia, I recommend checking out Bushman's Camp, it's on the way from Sossusvlei to Walvis Bay, after Solitaire, and it had some of the most breathtaking landscapes I've ever seen, and great for astrophotography as it was the only lodge around for hours.

    I’m so glad you got to realize a long held dream and thank you for sharing your experience with us. I love your insights into shooting a location. I also have a question about preserving your equipment in that sort of environment with blowing sand and dust. Did you take steps to protect the camera on location or was it a case of cleaning equipment afterword?

    I am off to Namibia this September and I am really excited. I see that you have used the GFX100s as your tool for this trip. I am thinking of changing to this camera as I loved the quality that the GFX50s gave me, however the lens range was a problem and I ended up with an X system in my bag too and hence I was ending up trying to decide which to use and too much to easily carry.
    Are some of the images shown heavily cropped to cover the lack of long lens availability?
    Excellent video.

    A little input: It was kinda hard for my sensitive ears on the first 4 minutes.
    If you can do a narrative-type video with a portable sound booth like bbc earth, I'm sure your sound quality will be improve drastically.
    But really enjoyed this video overall..

    • @AndyMumford
      @AndyMumford  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed the video. With regard to the sound, some of the video is recorded as a voice over, but the first part is recorded on location, which is something I love doing because it’s so much more evocative. Unfortunately I don’t have the budget or carrying capacity to bring along a portable sound booth

    Absolutely stunning Andy!!! It seems that the image quality out of the 100MP medium format system outweighs the benefits of shedding a few lbs from an APS-C system. I wonder if you would ever go back to the X-system even for long hiking trips?

    • @AndyMumford
      @AndyMumford  ปีที่แล้ว

      I use the GFX and the X system side by side now. I’m in Norway at the moment and only have the APS-C, and I don’t feel like I’m missing anything by leaving the GFX at home, On the Namibia trip there was almost no hiking, so weight wasn’t an issue, but I found the lack of telephoto reach of the GFX pretty limiting at times

    Beautiful and so interesting pictures. Congratulations. And thank you much for sharing!! One question Andy: I know that with a 100 mgpx sensor you can have bigger pictures in order to print them. But are there many and big other differences if I would take this pictures with mi XT 4? Thanks.

    • @AndyMumford
      @AndyMumford  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much Tomas. For sure you get larger prints, but there’s also increased dynamic range and less noise. However, if I’d shot them with the XT4 you probably wouldn’t see a difference on the internet or here on TH-cam

    Hey Andy, great fan of your work. I was wondering if the image would look better at 09:10 if shot at longer exposures, say 0.5 sec? I know the conditions were not conducive, just wanted to know if it would make the image more dreamy.

    • @AndyMumford
      @AndyMumford  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much for the comment. A long exposure wouldn’t have captured the dust along the bottom of the pan as it was moving too fast, adn the dust behind would just blur into a mass of white. Long exposures were also impossible in such high winds (it was really blowing) and we were trying to shoot as fast shutter speed as possible to remove any chance of shake

      Hi Scotty. I just borrowed the lens. My partner in Namibia has the 250mm and I used it on a few shots. It's a great lens, but very very heavy and with such a limited focal length I wouldn't carry it if I had to hike anywhere.

      Thanks for the comment. Interesting that you think that. The GFX images here have been resized to small JPEGs, then inserted into a 4K timeline and resized again, then rendered with the video and finally compressed for YT upload. You simply can’t tell the difference between a GFX image and an XT4 image on a video like this. You see the difference in prints or zooming in on a computer.
