ACCIDENTALLY Making a Unique Photo in a Classic Location

- Making unique photographs in iconic photography locations isn't easier. And, it's getting harder in this world where social media has taken over. People gravitate to the classic photography spots around the world.
Even down here in Namibia, places like Deadvlei and Sossusvlei are becoming overrun with photographers. Travel photography isn't a hobby anymore, it's an obsession. And it seems that photographers are obsessing more and more over certain classic photo spots.
Here in Namibia, I tried to take my photo tour to one of the most iconic photography locations in the world: Deadvlei. However, we took a couple missteps and found ourselves at a different salt flat and a bit brokenhearted.
In the end, though, I think it was for the best. I think that I ended up making a pretty unique photo in a place that really is over-photographed. And any day you can walk away with a unique photo from a really iconic place in the world it's a good day.
So today our photography in Namibia didn't really go to plan. But, it worked out. In fact, we might have been better off because of it.
Tomorrow, there'll be another photography vlog from here in Namibia.

All I was thinking and looking at your goggle to see the vlogging camera, stand microphone and how you hold it.. I need all these and most importantly yeah light weighted. :)

The conversation went:
him: "Don't go straight out, go around."
me: "I know where I'm going actually, thanks"
him: "no, don't take the trail it's terrible."
me: "it's ok, I know where I'm going"
him: "you're going the wrong way! You HAVE to go around!!"
me: "uhm, no thanks."
him: "you're an idiot, go around!"
** 5 minutes later... me: "maybe we should go around?"
Ha! So, we know it now - it was Thomas Heaton in disguise! Jedi mindtricks and stuff. ;)

@@BrendanvanSon As a satisfaction - that guy has maybe not recognized Hidden Vlei from Deadvlei and until now believes he was there. Which he wasn't. Great image though!

Props from an Okie on the Oklahoma Route 66 cap, Brendan. Another fun video. Question: When on guided trips like this, does the company provide opportunity to rent large lenses or do you have to travel across the world with one packed away?
I was actually the guide on this one! So, it was my trip. But, yes, I work with a local photo rental company to rent gear to participants.
You have a great spirit and control. I'd would have hunted the guy down 😱 Ace images.
I really liked the comparison between the two shots of the trees and dunes you must have had an instinct moment but it is good to understand your process to get to the 2nd shot.
The location makes me want to drink a gallon of water lol. I love going back to the same location and trying to fine tune the same image again, great point. As for trusting people I think we all want too but it’s becoming more difficult at times. We learn something everyday good or bad but move forward for positive results. Awesome pictures and thanks for sharing.

Photographer or not ... making lemonade from lemons is always a useful skill/attitude.

Good things come out of failures or necessity and sometimes you have luck on your side. Today for example I pitched up at Bodmin moor set up a composition with a pool and tussocky grass as my foreground with the Tors behind, then lol and behold a rainbow 🌈 appeared right in the middle of my composition, not behind or to one side, right in the middle. Hallelujah. Main thing about this video that I take away however is that photography is really about thinking, the actual image comes about as a consequence of the thought process. Luck does help though.
I just commented on one of John Haswell's videos it is always worth returning to a location. I went back to Snoqualmie Falls in Washington State yesterday and it was so different from my previous visit. Posted about it on Instagram.

@@BrendanvanSon Don't be too upset, when I visited Dead Vlei for the first time, the whole area was covered in thick fog, I could hear the other tourists speaking, but I could not see them. I couldn't find the Vlei. I went on to Sousosvlei and came back to Dead Vlei later that day when the fog had cleared.

True. The video is nice to watch, but the music doesn't go with a lovely landscape trip. Mr. Heaton on the other hand chooses very harmoniously music, perfect forr a calm and relaxing landscape experience.
