The Mistake That Turns a Regression Into An Ongoing Problem

  • Just when you think you're done toilet training your little one, there's a very good chance they'll regress. Maybe they'll start having accidents on a regular basis again, or they might start refusing to use the toilet all of a sudden.
    The truth is, this is perfectly normal. What we want to avoid when this happens is turning a mild regression into a more serious issue that is ongoing and difficult to resolve.
    This video will walk you through how to respond when a toileting regression occurs to make sure your child gets back to using the toilet successfully as soon as possible.
    I hope this helps!

    My 7 month old was 90% there. And then started crawling (and now walking) and we miss nearly all the cues. Now he's like 10%. But we're hoping by starting early with zero expectations that it clicks for him. Thanks for these insights.

    Thank you for this. Grandson was doing pretty good, but now he will say he wants to go potty but when we get there he says nope! Or wants to get back on the potty 3-4 times. I’ve started telling him we’re done after 2 times even though he gets upset. Now that I’ve typed that out maybe I see a connection. Now if only I knew what to do about it 😊

    Can you make a video for toddlers (mine is 2.7y) who learnt using the pot, were doing great but after a poop incident during the night started to regress and get psychologic constipulation. Difficult pooping, not wanting to sit on the pot and crying when it gets time for it. Started pooping in the pampers during sleep time and waking up crying.
    We play games, explain, encourage but there is no effect.

    My soon to be three daughter will say potty time when she has already pooped on her diaper. Sometimes she does in the potty, but I find it difficult to time her since I am looking after her infant brother. I am really worried because next year she will be going to the daycare. Any parent out there like me?

      @@benatalkshow yeah the way they wrote it, it seems the baby is potty trained at 4 months (which is not really possible as they don't have proper control over thrir sphincters). I think they mean from the time they started training, 4 months went by to a proper successful training.

    I’ve noticed my 2 1/2 year old loves cleaning up his clothes after an accident (spraying them down in the tub is somehow really exciting for him). Should I continue to involve him in the cleanup process even though sometimes I think his “accidents” are specifically done to be able to engage in the tidying routine afterwards?

    • @stephj2788

    • @dreaminginjapan
      @dreaminginjapan 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Since it’s the cleaning process (or so it seems) maybe find some other ways for him to clean things up. It might also be the time you two spend together or playing in water so you could find other ways to involve him in things

      We started at 6 months. We just pop him on. He intuitively knew to push. Some people start even earlier, others much later. Just give it a try, you may be surprised. But by starting early, we have no expectation, so that's made it easier for us. Best of luck

      Generally you will have more success telling a toddler what to do instead of what not to do. So if possible I would try and tell your little one what they can do or give him something he can hold when you go into the bathroom to keep his hands busy. I hope that helps.

      I'm about to start potty training my toddler too and I've been told my multiple parents that it's normal for kids to have a harder time learning to poop in the toilet/potty than peeing. So you're both doing great😊

    • @EmmaHubbard
      @EmmaHubbard  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      It’s really common for toddlers to be fearful of pooping into the toilet but happily do a wee. When they are pooping kids can be fearful that they are loosing a part of themselves or it could be because they actively have to push and sometimes it can hurt. In this video I go through some steps that you can do to help them learn to poop on the toilet. It is on constipation but the tips are the same. th-cam.com/video/n1kPzW8fgHE/w-d-xo.html&si=oapM7y3YPrrmxuie. I hope it helps!

      My daughter was both pee & poop potty trained at 3, overnight at 4. My son was pee potty trained at 3, but poop didn’t happen until 5 and he’s turning 6 next month and still in overnight pull-ups. My suggestion is to try different techniques, but if they aren’t sticking, it might just be developmental. Then just give it a month or so and then try again. I’ve found that it’s not worth frustrating us both and causing a negative feeling around the potty. I hope this helps, and I’m curious to hear what Emma says.
