To be fair, in another video Dr. Fung mentioned that a ketogenic diet results in 71% the benefit of fasting, so adding intermittent fasting in whatever form is an added benefit. He described keto and fasting as "cousins."

I have just under 70 pounds to lose. I doing high protein moderate fat low carb alternate day fasting. So it's a Dr. Westman - Dr Fung combo. Skipping some meals allows me to afford rib eyes on a regular basis. Weight loss is steady, meals are enjoyable, and while my stomach may growl on fasting days, I don't get the shakes or light-headed anymore. I love your reaction videos.

I see it fairly simply. If I never eat protein I will die. If I never eat fat, I will die. If I never eat carbs, I will be fine. There is NO HUMAN NEED FOR CARBOHYDRATES. When I eat keto, I am not hungry in the morning, so I eat later; voila! Intermittent Fasting.

If you watch other interviews or presentations by Dr. Fung, you will know that he supports good healthy food with no snacking between meals. It just makes sense to allow your body to deal with whatever food you have ingested, before you eat again. Giving yourself time to rest, and your cells to do some "housecleaning" (or autophagy if you are geekish) . If you are eating every 3 hours, your body never gets the chance to do this. As a doctor intimately involved with type two diabetic issues, he is naturally in favour of cutting out the sugars.

This needs to be put in the CLINICAL context of how Dr Fung developed his method. His clinic went with IF rather than relying keto because of the catchment population. Dealing with many immigrants and low income patients, the patients found the prospect of fasting more acceptable than not eating their culturally appropriate foods. For those who were happy to eat low carb when they did eat, they got better results. Those who practiced THERAPEUTIC fasting but didnt change what they ate, still got acceptable results.

Megan Ramos did a podcast about which is better: fasting or diet. And, exactly for the reasons you mention, including also not having access to low carb foods due to being in a care facility of some sort, they started with fasting and had wonderful results. She believes, wholeheartedly, that for an insulin resistant population, fasting is the first and most powerful thing to try. BUT she also said that diet is important, and if you want to heal as much as possible, combining the two is ideal.

If you fast for a long time, like the person doing a full year without food, you need to take supplements. The usual fasts nowadays ranging from 16 hours to a few days do not cause any deficiencies. And what toxins do you expect from no intake of food or calorific liquids? Our bodies do not usually produce toxic metabolites they cannot deal with, as long as adaquate fluid intake is maintained. Even with long fasts of weeks and months, an accumulation of toxic metabolic products is not an issue.
There is not a single study that shows any "toxicities" from fasting. Feel free to link one if you know one.

  • @kdemetter
    @kdemetter 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +20

I've followed Dr Fung's program for a time, and I have to point out : He doesn't just recommend fasting. His program is fasting combined with eating a low-carb to keto diet.
They are actually a powerful combination because it's much easier to fast when you are already fat-adapted thanks to eating keto. And conversely, doing like a 36h fast can help you get fat-adapted more quickly ( but that can really suck though).
Today, I just use it as a practical solution : having fasted in the past over 36h in the past, I know that I can go that long without food without any problems. So that if I'm on the road, at a conference or some other situation where I can't at least eat keto, I don't have to worry. In that sense, it's a powerful and simple tool to have at your disposal

I understand that insulin in the blood helps glucose into cells, converts excess glucose into glycogen and prevents fat burning. Therefore when you don’t have insulin in your blood ie fasting, means you must burning fats. When you are on keto every time you eat you will still raise some insulin…..
I’m still intermittent fasting and on keto / carnivore. Great way to go!👍👍👍

After doing the ketogenic diet and intermitten fasting for 2 years, I would say the combination of food is the foremost concern, and then the timing and the duration of fasting would come naturally. The high fat with adequate protein would determine when I will have the next meal. Carbs just make me feel hungry earlier, which mean my duration of my fasting shorter.

The first time was for 28 hours in which I experienced near euphoric spiritual feelings and mentally sharp. I wasn't hungry and felt I could have continued for longer. The second time was different. He's using autophagy which does work in a "self-cleaning way". I used it to help during my adaptation to a keto diet. Worked very nicely. Autophagy removes damaged cells and you can simply do this overnight while you sleep, and you rely upon ketone bodies made from your body fat. Since I was not taking meds, nor a diabetic, it was perfectly safe. All that is needed is no snacking ever and skipping breakfast - doing OMAD. And this pattern fits into today's commuting lifestyle. You have your black coffee on your way out the door in the morning, no snacking at work, and then you have a nice ketogenic lunch. This is how one adapts more easily to keto, trains yourself to not snacking and since you're on the job you don't have to endure people nagging you to eat a "balanced diet". Eat only what is "essential for life" which are meat and fat. No carbs, all of them. KETO 18/6 +A is my method.

I agree. I exercise in the morning and the thought of getting up and exercising for 1.5 hours without eating a cup of yogurt and walnuts means that I would not get up at all. I prefer to eat my last meal when the workday is done, not in the middle of the day, so I rarely can go more than 13 hours per day fasting. That is good enough for me. I also still eat some carbs and I admit to even eating ice cream and some cookies. However, I do not make a habit of it and I do not need to lose weight. I would like to put on more muscle, but according to a recent CAT scan, I do not have viseral fat. I may still have some fat in my liver and pancreas, and some day I may ask for a scan to determine how much fat is in my liver and pancreas, but according to what Dr. Robert Lustig has said about blood work, it is unlikely that I have non-alcoholic liver disease.

Maybe add electrolytes to your water to improve hydration at a cellular level.
Monitor blood sugars if you fast.
Start by fasting overnight, like 12 hours at first. Get quality sleep.
A reason you may feel poorly could be your cortisol levels are off, or you aren’t properly hydrated, sleep isn’t restorative, menopause?, hormones aren’t optimal…
You could more gradually adapt, as fasting too soon and too long before adapting without adjusting the diet, with likely affect how your body responds.
Later you can delay breakfast by 1 hour, or have supper an hour earlier.

My understanding is that Dr. Fung initially wanted to convince his patients to eat a low carb diet, but he evidently ran into some resistance from his patients, so he settled on fasting instead because that also keeps insulin from spiking. I was inspired to try fasting and my 24-hour fasts were ok, but he said that people didn't end up gaining weight back afterward and I ALWAYS did. The worst was when I fasted for 3 full days and gained the weight back IN A DAY!!! So discouraging. Dr. Fung's plan is also to eat 2 meals per day every other day, and fast completely the days in between. He says that you won't lose muscle because your body isn't "stupid," but I've since researched the importance of protein, and now I refuse to fast because I don't want to lose muscle as I age. Honestly, eating keto is a hell of a lot easier than eating NOTHING!

    For older women, vast majority
    Needs fasting
    Pointblank
It’s sucky in our culture but it’s reality
    Also
-it takes a looooong time of severe carb restriction (w/high fat) and IF/EF before seeing things even start to shift
It’s rare for the person to tolerate this in our culture. It’s HARD and for no gain (fat loss). So they give up.
I’m talking 6 mos till fat loss rly starts kicking in - like the 25yo did in week 3 lol
Support network is absolutely KEY or ur going to lose in the fat loss game

Dr Elizabeth Bright says the exact opposite! Older women who fast spike Cortisol, which puts on belly fat. We (I’m 73) can lose fat by eating mostly fats and protein, minimal carbs, and by working out with weights sufficiently to build some muscle (which burns fat while you sleep).
This is absolutely sustainable once you take your own health seriously and realize how terrible the alternatives can be.
And any woman who can’t make up her mind to eat healthily and needs a ton of “support” is weak-willed. In the words of Neicey Nash, “Take a big girl pill!”

@@margomoore4527 Not everyone is the same and some people have more discipline and drive than others. Carb addiction is real, but I think that much more of carb addiction is psychological. I know a lot of overweight women who are not happy. The people that they loved have died or moved on with their own children and do not have much time to spend with their mothers. For women who never had careers and who centered their lives around their children, empty nest syndrome and losing their husband and many of their friends leaves them with little but food and TV. Take away the comfort foods and what do these people have left? Quite a lot if they are willing to change their lives and develop other interests, but that is difficult if you do not have the habit of doing so for the last thirty or forty years.

Dr. Fung’s back story is that he prescribed a low carb/ketogenic diet to his patients. In follow up visits, his patients would not show any improvement of their diabetes numbers. He would ask if they cut out the carbs, and they would lie and not mention that they are still eating rice. Most of his patients are Asian, F they could not get the rice out of their diet because of their culture relies on rice. So he asked them to skip a meal or two (do intermittent fasting). His patients could do that if they could still eat rice, and they began to have improvement in their diabetes markers. That was the start of his concentrating on intermittent fasting.

Someone I was listening to made the comment that hunger was the signal to go hunt for food. People in the wild would then have to go work for it in many/most cases and it might take a while to finally eat. Personally, I like to intermittently feast, which is a phrase several people are now using and I think it fits well. I don't look at it as fasting if you are only eating when the body says you are hungry, go find food.
I have seen people who have eaten whatever they want, once a day, and lost weight. I wouldn't do that. I do believe it is not just about losing weight, it is about losing unwanted fat and also still getting complete nutrition. I also find I don't like fasting much on low/no carb. However, every once in a while I just feel like not eating for a day or two and typically just follow my body cues.
Fiber is an interesting topic. I see no reason to eat fiber and have not heard any convincing argument that make me believe you need to eat any. I don't, and so far ( 3.5 years ) no issues that I know of. Of course, I don't eat carbs either, so not really worried about slowing down sugar digestion.
Funny that eating protein goes to eating only protein. Protein and fat come together, what a shock. Eat the food as it comes in nature. Carbs and fiber are not essential, pretty much says we evolved eating mostly protein and fat and would have only had what nature provided. Carbs would have been very limited, and still are today in come places. Doesn't mean we cannot eat them, we just wouldn't often and that allows us to handle doses every so often.
We also need to have insulin rise every so often. Too many people are afraid of insulin. Don't raise it by artificially eating carbs that we don't need to eat, let the body make what it needs from the protein you eat and the fat you store.

I've watched a lot of Diary of a CEO videos. He's been very interested in low carb eating lately, but he also entertains vegan influencers. No doubt in my mind, Fung was either cautioned against spending too much time on what you eat and focus only the fasting element, or that was edited out. Before I started low carb eating I watched a lot of Fung's videos and was doing IF while still eating plants and sugar and it was helpful. So, this little seed is very good. Recently, my hopelessly sugar addicted t2d relative decided he was going to do intermittent fasting. I have no idea if he still is doing that or not, but something put that seed in his mind. He even recently said to me that my diet was working better than his (he follows standard of care from a vegetarian doctor). So I'm just not offering any more information and will let him follow the path and pray it gets him to the low carb lifestyle.

I do typically fast 18 / 6 but am reconsidering this. I am nearly at my goal and may go to 3mad keto and maintain as needed with the occasional fast.
I also have strict fasting period through the Orthodox Church including many Saturday evenings, Advent, Lent and 2 weeks in July / August.

I have been researching both vegan and carnivore diets in recent months and have come to the conclusion that both can work depending on the person. It’s the elimination of sugar and junk foods that convey most of the benefits. I thought I would share one of my observations though from watching hundreds of videos from both communities:
The carnivore community videos tend to have hundreds if not thousands of people sharing their experiences on carnivore which are 99.99% very positive. It’s often difficult to find even a single example where some had a bad experience on it. I would say at least 90% say it cleared up an array of illnesses and people feel amazing on it. These comments rarely mention vegans or a vegan style of eating. It is rare to find a case of someone who ate carnivore and switched to vegan and said they feel better or that it was the best thing they ever did.
The vegan community is littered with people castigating meat eaters and dismissing carnivore, often with a smug or hateful attitude. I understand that many people have an idealogical aversion to killing animals. It is quite common to find people who were ill on vegan and cured themselves when they switched to carnivore. Of course there are a majority that also feel great on vegan too.
I notice that it is overwhelmingly the Vegan community that spreads FUD. It is then those same “experts” that seek to sell you you on all kinds of potions, supplements and procedures. My spidey senses are tingling. In my life experience when someone hits me with FUD and then offers a solution which I need to pay for it is usually BS.
Let me give you one of hundreds of examples of this. I watched a carni video talking about SIBO, they said the vast majority of people see improvement within 2 weeks of a meat based, zero card diet. They tried to see me nothing. Then I saw the vegan community discussing this. They said it needed to be analyzed via a stool sample and then promoted a $250 stool analysis service. I see this pattern again and again and again.
Like I said, I think both diets have their benefits but do your research folks and question those spreading FUD and selling you stuff as a supposed panacea.

I just wanted to say that I have been intermittent fasting now for about 7 months and have lost over 6 stone in weight. When I do eat witch I have restricted to a 6 hour eating window I do eat high carb foods for example I will have one bowl of cearl twice in that window then fast and then another day I will have a nice sandwich once that day and fast . I know this is in your opinion bad but it seems to work for me . I would try a keto diet but the foods that say they are keto friendly all seems to be either pricy or ridiculously expensive and as a person on a very low budget I have to stick to what I can afford . I think a lot of the videos not just yours about keto do not take in to account people on low incomes enough . Does the “answer” then not lie in a moderate and sustainable combination or low carb and intermittent fasting? Fasting may be “natural” if indeed you don’t wake up hungry … and not being hungry is the result of low carb diets … a natural state through which we evolved. Break the “habit” of eating and replace it with “necessity” of eating.

I’m a little confused about Dr Fung saying protein mixed with fat is problematic? Why? It’s completely natural and whole. He seems to be saying eat chicken because it’s low in fat. Is that for weight loss or is that for health? Is he saying animal fat is bad for you? And is he a proponent of fiber (whole grain what) ? Because I know we don’t need fiber if we don’t want it in the context of a low carb diet. Surely if you are not low carb the fiber could have a benefit but if you are in ketosis I don’t think fiber is necessary not a nanogram. And I still don’t understand why he holds the 70s up as the ideal decade. That is the decade I did some of the most damage to myself; Twinkie’s, grape soda by the 12 pack, chocolate bars and Rice Crispys for breakfast with a mound of sugar poured on top. Had to be disastrous for my 10 year old brain. I know I only survived because I was a high level Athlete. Paying for it now tho.

I need huge amounts of fat to support my energy, sleep, hormones, etc...

I skip breakfast, have a super carnivorous lunch and in the evening just a banana or some papaya or berries. I never fast for longer because I enjoy the feeling of being hungry after 3 days and then I don't want to eat anything at all. that is dangerous for me

Dr Fung is very carefull in instructing his followers on his TH-cam channel. But the host here is asking him questions and he provides the answers. The parts you show are out of the context of the rest of the whole interview.
Intermittent fasting is what we did since our species started their existance.
Your’re right however that people should take care going back to that regime if already taking medicine for their bad lifestyle…

Very true, and many of our species died of starvation. If you could go back in time and ask early humans whether they would prefer to eat every day and have enough food to eat more than once a day, they would look at you as if you were crazy. Starvation was a reality then in a way that is fortunately rarely true today. Today many poor people eat food that may not be nutritious but empty junk food or a bowl of rice, but unless there is a famine or natural disaster, most humans have something to eat each day. People may be hungry today if they are eating junk and a lot of carb, but they are not typically at the brink of starvation except in countries that have wars, famines, and natural disasters or criminal dictators who hoard everything for themselves. That is a huge change in what most humans faced early in our development as a species.

I dare anyone to fast on a high carb diet, IMHO it's torture. No carb + fasting = easy peasey. If your hunger signals aren't working, eat when your hungry is problematic.

Everyone should have a Fasting Insulin Test. Glucose test is only one tiny piece of the puzzle.
    REDUCE INSULIN NOT CALORIES!

I think that almost all overweight and/or obese people are malnourished. If I am correct, fasting can actually be dangerous. I do think that if you eat enough nutrient dense food, you can fast, but it shouldn't be extended. So yes. I do think that obese people should actually eat more. Eat more nutrient dense food and eat less nutrient deficient food.

You are spot on. what do people who have a "beer belly" and people starving to death have in common. Look at the pictures. Same belly distension. Hmmm...

Here is a simple tried and true way to lose belly fat: eat healthy , cut out the junk fake food, do simple exercises daily (like pull ups, push ups walking) and Fast twice a week. If you eat three meals a day cut it down to 2 or 1.5. Cutting out alcohol is also recommended. Its done wonders for me. Lately ive been looking in the mirror with amazement and thanking God 🙏🏻☦️
