    You continue to inspire me. I grabbed your concept of a laundry powder, but derived from coconut oil, palm free stearic acid, lemon, and eucalyptus essential oil. I cure my soap batter on silicone baking trays, which are then far easier to break up and process. Washing soda is a natural fabric softener, lemon is both a brightener, as well as rich in citric acid so brilliant for hard water, and great at getting stains out. I dissolve the powder it in hot water before each use, I then wash my clothes with cold water. I have previously used various wash powders etc, but this recipe is far cleaner on my washing machine (a 13 year old Fisher and Paykel top loader), is by far more effective, and has been the answer for my sons eczema. I have also used the same recipe for a dish wash mix but using lemon essential oil.

    I just found your site. I love the way you think. Thank you so much for all you share. I am a lot like you. I have made my own laundry soap for years using half bar of Zote laundry soap bar/1/2 cup Borax/1/2 cup washing soda in a quart jar. Much like you do. I use a heaping table spoon in my front load machine (I put it right on the laundry not in the dispenser). It works wonders and is easy to scoop out of open containers. I will now have to try using my own soap instead of buying one. I like the jell I make because I always have recycled containers around that work and I don't like pouring from big jugs. It is so wonderful to see how you do it. I would like to say to all the folks out there that think the home made stuff doesn't just clean as well, it is much BETTER. My hubby is a large equipment mechanic and boy his clothes smell and my soap really cuts the smell much better than even the most expensive stuff you can buy. I agree the term is fresh. btw I am jealous of your laundry hanging setup. Thank you and keep doing what you are doing.

    I was hoping you'd show how your rack goes up and down. I think that's brilliant. I hang all my laundry down in my cellar all winter, I run a dehumidifier down there for my soap, it's perfect. Hello Elly,
    In Europe, some manufacturers have come out with detergent sheets. They are wonderfully light to carry home in small envelopes or small cardboard boxes. Their performance is excellent. I am surprised the biggest manufacturers haven’t caught on yet… these detergents eliminate plastic waste completely for this category.

    • @MaryMagdoline94294
      @MaryMagdoline94294 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Sadly those detergent sheets contain PVAs which are also known as polyvinyl alcohol. The sheets seem to conveniently “dissolve” in water but unfortunately the PVAs are still there. Also, water treatment plants can’t treat the water from PVAs before they get released into the ocean as microscopic plastic. It’s also showing up in our waterways and have been found in breastmilk… :(
      I feel like it’s a big step but they really have to remove those PVAs and find a safer alternative. 😢

    WOW! You sure covered a LOT in this vid. Thank you! 😊
    I've made tbe liquids with 50% and 70% coconut oil, and made a 90% coco bar soap that I both grated (for liquid) and combined 50% washing soda for a powder...and tried your recipe that gels. I wasn't expecting the grated bar version to gel, so had to heat the jugs and pour the soap into buckets. It was a bit of a pain, mainly because I always make big batches. 😂
    Of everything, I prefer the liquid and find that if I make the 50% coco version, it doubles as dish soap concentrate and I can always add washing soda and/or borax. 👍 My water is hard well water, so I'm always fiddling with new ideas, but have no problems with any of these recipes getting things clean or residue.
    Thank you again for all your vids and the thoughtful explanations. Much love from the Heartland, US. 😚❣

    Hi, just wanted to let you know that I am in Taiwan and the method you keep your wash machine it's so much like us. We use top loader Whirlpool, been using the machine for 21 years, all our lives, we've used Whirlpool. We keep cloth on top of our wash machine just to protect the outer shell for wear and tear. The machine will last for a long time. We don't use dryer as it consumes energy. We in Taiwan dries our laundry by hanging out in the balcony or back of the house. That's what the sun is for, ain't it?! I've been watching your soap making, and because your environment is so much like ours, hight humidity, I feel I can trust your recipe and turn out good soap. We started making soap because of covid lockdown. But we found it really interesting and also because I have very sensitive itchy skin and I find regular soap too harsh and liquid body soap too expensive. We now use our own hand made soap. And we love it. We've come up with so much leftover soap, we did start to make laundry detergent soap. But we got kind of stuck with a batch of soap, which were too wet, not dry enough. We kind of shaved it and just let them sit out to dry them out. So, now we are resorting to buying commercial liquid soap again. Waiting for the shaved soap to dry out takes ages and we've got a dehumidifier going almost everyday. Anyway, love your channel and keep making soap!

      Oh thank you, it's lovely to hear from you in Taiwan! Yes the humidity is such a different experience isn't it? I wonder could you make a liquid/gel with your soap shavings so you wouldn't have to wait for them to dry out? THis would be good th-cam.com/video/vsIKA0ly4PE/w-d-xo.html

    Hi Elly, I think this is my fav of all your vids, I can so relate to how you live! I’m not 100% “good” but boy do I try. Being conscious of what goes out in the garbage , has made me so aware of what my neighbours throw out every week, whereas I barely have anything to go out. Such a good point you made with the cardboard boxes of powder.
    It’s so funny, both of my adult kiddos get me to make the laundry powder from your original recipe for them and my son takes it on board his ship ( he works for Aust Border Force ) and every time he’s home, I restock his lil bag and off he goes for the month at sea! He also takes my bar soaps with him and has handed some out to his colleagues who love it.
    My daughter is obsessed with the laundry powder and won’t use anything else and in the shower too, the 25% superfat coconut soap is her fav.
    I’m going to watch your prev liquid laundry soap vid again and make some today so I can compare it to the bar/washing soda mix. I think I could easily pop some washing soda alongside the liquid in my front loader , I’m sure that would smell so fresh and work well.
    Such an inspiration watching this vid and I LOVE your laundry. My kiddos share a house in Enoggera and it’s post war and the laundry looks just like yours with the louvre windows and bricks.
    Thanks again Elly for all the time you put into your videos, oh and the 50% water / 50% white vinegar is the best fabric softener, no scum in my machine either and the rubber seals are clean too. 🙏🙏🙏

I really love the dry laundry powder recipe, but it sometimes gets stuck a bit in my washer soap dispenser, so when I started using the gel/liquid version, that problem was completely solved so they are my favourites now! Well I made the liquid one ( not the gel one yet) yesterday and I’ve also just let it sit overnight , today I will stick blend it a bit more and I think for this batch I’ll just put it in an Aldi 2 lt yoghurt bucket and I will also have my washing soda in another yoghurt bucket and will just combine a little into the liquid and see how that washes. I know what you mean with the powder being stuck a little in the dispenser and hence I was soooo excited to try the liquid. I can’t wait til my next load 😄.
      I’ll still have to make the powder though for my son to take with him in his lil baggie 😂.
      I imagine the essential oils also keep their scent nicely suspended in this liquid so win win all around I’d say 👍.
      Well done Elly!

    Hi Elly and Kevin! So happy to see Kevin contributing to the laundry soap process, can't have any freeloaders roaming around ;)
    I wanted to share with you some of my findings in my own laundry soap research. I am here in bitter cold Canada and feel confident that the liquid soap would be a problem. I have been using your recipe for the powder soap with washing soda and am having fantastic results. I have learned that essential oil scents do not last, but smell fresh during washing. I use fragrance oils when I want to make the scent last. I use 75% coconut oil, 20% olive oil, 5% castor oil and find I do not need fabric softener at all. I read somewhere that it is the olive oil that keeps clothes soft and the castor oil improves the efficacy of the soap ingredients. I realize that washing in cold water is better, but find that the powder dissolves better in warm and that the soap cleans better in warm (not hot). Rinse in cold. I do not sort my colours because I am a Millennial (ha!) and zero problems keeping my whites white and my colours bright. I also read that by not adding too much soap you can increase the cleaning power because the clothes will be less slippery from being coated in soap, thus adding more friction against the fabrics to help clean them. I find I need 2 TBSP for a full load to be successful on a top loader. I do wonder if the powder will become soft in the Summer, but so far so good. My mom absolutely loves this stuff. Thank you for teaching me your ways, can't wait to watch more!

I had great fun making them too. Have a lovely day and happy soaping!

    My childhood family only began using fabric softener when my father bought a dryer. I grew up in a desert climate with mild winters so hanging the wash out to dry wasn’t an issue other than the time. I think I was 11-12 yrs old when the dryer came into the home. Softener was a necessity due to severe static during the drying. Relative humidity was under 10% unless we had rain falling. So dry, that rain could be smelled from 40 miles away even when it didn’t fall where we lived.

    White vinegar is fantastic to take shampoo/soap residue off your hair too, cleans the shower base of shower grot too.

    Thanks, really enjoyed the video. Cleared up a few questions i had about why my homemade laundry soap went solid and the uses of washing soda i.e. whether or not it makes laundry cleaner. As of now, February 2024, like everything else the price of washing Detergent has gone through the roof so with a family of four I was looking at a cheaper alternative for laundry. I also wanted to find a use for my used cooking oil, again, because of cost it seemed wasteful to just dispose of large amounts of oil from the deep fryer so I've started using it to make laundry deterg. Thanks again, will be checking out your other soap recipes. Also good to find an Australian video that is relatable in regard to temperatures and products etc.

      @EllysEverydaySoapMaking  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks Julie, that's so great to hear. Yes I forgot to mention price, but if you can make the bar soap affordably, then making laundry detergent from that is a very cost effective exercise. Even using commercial laundry soap to make a big bucket of laundry gel is a great idea I think. I've done that and it works so well.

    Love the practicality and transparency Elly. Beautiful job as always, and Kevin - what a cutie! I would be curious to know how you prep or use that soap for all purpose things around the house (dilute in squirt bottles for an all purpose spray? Etc.). I am a sucker for a multipurpose item! I recently had my first cold process laundry soap seize (your video on using old oils was my guide, 50% coconut) and had to rebatch (another guiding video of yours to fix my mistake ❤️) but added a bit too much water, so I'm hoping my soap will evaporate and harden into a solid bar with time so I can cut it. We will see!

That being said I saw your video on using old oils for soap making and how you use citric acid then add more sodium hydroxide. I’m still lost but my question is. Can I use old rice brand oil without the added citric acid for laundry soap? If I get DOS will it damage my cloths? I’m still trying to figure out the formula process for the added citric. Seems very straightforward but I’m still worried I may calculate it wrong. Thank you for getting back to me.

      Ooh, that might be tricky! I don't think my 'gel' would have gone through a pump, especially not last winter when it needed the scoop. The scoop is your friend! Haha about the washing line. You just let it down, hang your clothes, then pull it up again and tie the rope off on a cleat :)

    Now I understand what happens with my coconut oil soap when I melt it to liquid. The clothes gets really clean, but to get it to a "scoopable" state I had to use a lot more water (and it takes DAYS!) to get it usable. 🙈😄 But that's fine, more diluted, but I just use a bit more...
    What oils do you recommend for the laundry soap (bars) more that the coconut oil? Or doesn't it matter? I know you use rice bran oil but here in Sweden it's hard to find and super expensive! 🙈
    Or is it just some oils to avoid? I know I should use "soft" oils and not hard ones. Or is the most important thing that the soap is 0 % super fat?

    Hi Elly,
    I have really enjoyed watching your soap making videos and using your 100% coconut oil soaps (both 5% and 25% superfat versions) that I made for many years. Thanks for that! 🥰
    I have a question about laundry soap. I made my dry laundry soap using your recipe 5 years ago with 100% coconut oil soap (of course with 5% superfat). It works perfectly, and I love how I don't have to buy all the packaged products and everything. However, when I store my clothes for a long time, they smell like old oil. I live in Melbourne, where we have long, cold days and short, warm days. I wash my summer clothes and keep them in the wardrobe, and then the next summer I take them out, but they don't smell very pleasant. Sometimes I wash them again before I wear them. I am wondering if it's from the soap or if I am doing something wrong.

    • @EllysEverydaySoapMaking
      @EllysEverydaySoapMaking  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      That's a very good question! I would say perhaps it could be due to the superfat? These days I avoid any superfat as much as possible in any soap that will get used for laundry. I would definitely avoid using the 25% SF coconut oil soap! The oily smell could be the soap, or perhaps you're using too much or it's not rinsing properly? I hope those thoughts help.

  • @garybaldy2907

    I like the videos, thank you! I have a question about soap making. Everybody I’ve seen making soap, seems to pour the lye (NaOH + water) into the oils. Why not first put the water in the bowl or pot that you’re going to use to stir, then the NaOH?. Then dissolve the NaOH and then add the mixed oils. Because then you would skip the (potentially dangerous) step of lifting and pouring lye.

    • @EllysEverydaySoapMaking

If I'm not in the kitchen (food & soap making), I'm in the downstairs addition, literally sitting at my little table in front of the dryer and washer, both of which have towels over them 😄 AND... 30 seconds before you mentioned your gecko, I persuaded a gecko off the inside of our screen door and out into the garage 😁 I made the True Liquid Laundry soap a week ago (my first liquid soap ever), and recycled a used condiment squeeze bottle for a smaller portion to keep handy for quick handwash laundry tasks upstairs. It's only Gram and I, so we have minimal lightly soiled laundry, but I have been testing the liquid soap, and everything seems to be coming out nicely. I add a small bit of white vinegar to the rinse (no shop softener). I'm trying to learn and do more DIY for the household (including food prep/preservation) because where I live is super isolated and the 2 small stores here are very expensive with limited choices. Don't worry about your laundry room... you could blend right in here in Hawaii, complete with the jealousy windows. I do appreciate the information you share, along with your experiences. I'm not sure, I don't have those issues. I guess it depends on the type of soap you are using in your formula. It might also depend on your water type.

    In Europe we are happy to be able to place our washing machine in a kitchen, or bathroom... Hardly any special washrooms. Don't please humble yourself

      That's such a good point. Thank you for your perspective. I am sometimes embarrassed by the rough look of my laundry. But a lot of old houses have laundry rooms like this in Queensland and you are right, I'm lucky to have the space that I have!

    I would love to make my own laundry soap but I'm concerned about soap scum build up in my machine. I hate buying all of these plastic jugs that end up in landfills.

      I have been making my own DIY preparations for many years, and NEVER had any issues with plumbing or soap scum. Did you see how shiny the inside of my machine is? You have to watch to the end 😉
