  • I visit the beautiful Powis Castle Gardens near Welshpool in Powys, Wales. I explore the terraces, and have a look at the nearby park. I also start the video with a sneak peak of the Montgomery Canal, which follows part of The Severn Way. I will come back to explore it in more detail in a later Severn Way video.

Got to disagree with you on this one as I personally thought the castle was also well
    worth a visit
Constructed by a former Welsh Prince to
a near identical design to nearby Montgomery
it was at one-time owned by Clive of India
(acquired through marriage to the heiress)
as a result it contains many momentos
of his time in the subcontinent

Hi Stephen. Thanks for commenting. Yes, I realise that the castle inside is very popular, and I can see why, but I really, really hated it. I thought the decor, layout and ambience was awful, and in very poor taste. I realise mine is a minority view. However, the outside of the castle itself (structure and the building) is a very different matter, and I thought it was superb. I was hoping to do pieces to camera with the castle behind me, to explain more about the castle's history, which as you say is fascinating, but, unfortuantely, like most of my trip to Wales, I was hampered yet again by the poor weather. Thank you for watching and commenting, it is absolutely fine to have a differing opinion. Take care, Paul

'it is absolutely fine to have a differing opinion' of course it is 🙂
Powis should really be compared to other medium sized castles with continued occupation such as Berkeley and nearby Chirk
Other larger continually occupied castles became the forerunners of stately homes such as the surviving Warwick and the ruined Raglan and Kenilworth
(post civil war Raglan was internally striped by the Marquess of Worcester for his new family home Badminton House)

@@stephenchappell7512 Yes, I hope to cover both Berkeley and Kenilworth (although a ruin of course) castles in future videos. I have been to both before, and found Berkeley preferable inside. Kenilworth thankfully now has a railway station again 🙂 Cheers Paul

Just loved this terraced gardens. I love places like this. I to hate crowds and have clostrophobia. I avoid them if possible. Nice video Paul.

Thank you Alice! Yes, the gardens are indeed lovely. I was in two minds whether to leave in my explanation of having an autistic meltdown inside the castle - then, I thought that others may find it a tricky environment to handle too - hence why I left it in. Thanks so much for watching and commenting Alice, take care, Paul.

Lovely video Paul! I have never visited there. One to investigate when I go to Wales again one day.
It’s a shame about the inside of the castle being so dark etc and it was you explained your reasoning for finding it a difficult place really well.
    Beautiful gardens!

Thank you Louise! Yes, they don't allow photography inside the castle either, which is unusual for a National Trust property these days - you are usually OK, as long as you don't use flash. It maybe because parts of the castle are still lived in. I was hoping to return to the Gardens (because there was more that I hadn't covered) after I did the piece in the Park, but the rain returned with a vengeance sadly! However, I can thoroughly recommend a visit for the gardens alone, and the castle maybe worth an explore on a quiet day! Take care, Paul 👍😊

Thanks for this post. Totally agree with you about the gardens and castle interior. The gardens are breathtakingly gorgeous, but the castle is extremely disappointing inside. Apart from being very dark and somewhat depressing, the plan/layout (from as much as we can see) is quite odd and doesn’t flow at all well. Stylistically it’s all over the place. I was quite shocked as to how bad it is. A real mismatched smorgasbord of period styles that often don’t work well together. I could go on but won’t!

      Yes, it is very odd!
I only visited it when I was doing that section of The Severn Way and heard that the gardens were good. They were but unfortunately the inside didn't match up to it and crowd control by the National Trust was very poor. As you say, very dark and claustrophobic inside.
Thank you for watching though and taking the time to comment.
      Take care,
      Paul

Hello Paul - greetings from Poland
You're a long way from home! I hope you enjoyed making parts 1 and 2 of The Severn Way. That was a lovely visit to "The Monty".
The castle gardens were mind-blowingly beautiful. Your superb camera work and still photogrpahs made what we saw even better. I wonder how they manage to trim those giant pieces of topiary? They're massive in places!
I loved the Tulip Tree - I guess it must look very beautiful when it's in flower.
Gorgeous still photographs to finish off this wonderful video. I really enjoyed what we saw. Thank you

The Tulip Tree will not flower until it is at least 9or10 years old. I did in fact plant one in a garden l rented but unfortunately left the property 5 years later and was only able to see its beautifull flowers some years later when l visited my old next door neighbour Sad but True 😎😎😎

Oh, that's such a shame John, it is an attractive tree - even when not in flower in my opinion. As you say the flowers are beautiful. Thank you for commenting. Cheers, Paul.
