    My favorite BSG moment is actually a Baltar one: when he chokes up at the end after telling Caprica that he knows about farming. It's kind of a full circle moment about how much each character has changed and ended up by the end of it all.

    • @mullcrumthesage6303
      @mullcrumthesage6303 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It was his story really.

    • @ChristopherBergsten
      @ChristopherBergsten 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@mullcrumthesage6303 I disagree. This story has many stories within them. Look at the story arc of Tigh, what he goes through. The madness of Galen and the amount of times he was simply put, disgarded or shat on. There is Kara who had a journey of understanding her destiny and not being forgotten. There was Bill who did what any military leader should, he took charge and tried to keep the men and women intact for the journey while also developing ties with his son, daughter in law - and his to be wife, had she not died. Boomer went from human, to sleeper agent, to cylon who wanted to forget who she was previously, back to her Adama promise. Hera, with parents. There is obviously also the story of Baltar and Caprica 6, but at the end of the day, this show really does not just follow A story. It follows 20 sum people in their daily story during a purge event such as the flood in the bible.
      Personally, I'd like to think that the story starts and stops with Galactica. Everyone else was just a guest, along for the ride.
      God damnit, I love this show. Just now 1h ago finished watching it again with my girlfriend, whom also enjoyed it. Now I just know I gotta give it 10 another years for another watch, so some emotions can build up anew. Like hearing that first "Ongoing cylon attack" where Tigh thinks they're busting Adamas balls.

      I loved that scene... How much he hated that he was from "farming" planet his whole life, changing his way of speech just to sound elegant and not "lowlife" farmer... Also, I think he fell in love with Caprica when she found retirement home with a garden for his father. That moment when he understood that him being a farmer and know how to do it is what will really help him and Caprica... Not all that science with which he wiggled his way out of danger

    The thing that resonated the most when I first stumbled on this series was episode 1 where Commander Adama tells Saul his XO to man up and do his job. During a crisis where everyone is second guessing each other he made the tough call to sacrifice the maintenance crew in order to save the ship. Could he have waited 20 sec? Maybe, but the ship could have also blown up in that 20 sec and that was a really hard call that he made to save the ship. In an era where I grew up watching Star Trek and its idealistic principles, it was jarring to see the importance of being in command.
    Star Trek TNG touched on it briefly in the episode where Troy tries to make commander rank and only achieved it by sending Laforge to his death in a simulation but seeing BSG for the first time makes you realize that getting a promotion really sucks because your decisions are going to get people killed. Critics might argue this show is too dark or depressing but it's just perfect as it is, because it truly shows that leadership has its costs (like Roslin ordering the civilian ship destroyed).

    BSG was so successful, I think, because it was never played for laughs, never campy or humorous, and always, as Mr. Olmos noted, about the PEOPLE. That's what drives a good story of any sort; the people and their joys and tragedies, their love, hatred, nobility and fragility. Every character was conflicted to some degree, blown around by the winds of fate, and forced to make choices that changed them, gave them all a new sense of self. THAT'S good art.
    Let's all consider that Moore and the writers deliberately limited the kind of technology in use. No lasers, phasers, or photon torpedoes. No tractor beams, no magical gadgets that were introduced as a way to write their way out of a plot hole or a corner. There were two major pieces of tech: inertial gravity for the big ships and the FTL jump capability. The cybernetic aspects were solid extrapolations of existing tech--we're pretty darned close to that right now, aren't we? (Seen those latest designs from DARPA?) But you may have noticed that the Galactica relied very little on complex computers for a really good reason: those can be hacked as demonstrated by the hack done on those advanced Mk VII Vipers.
    Bluntly, the show was NOT about the cool gadgets but rather the people and that's why it was so damned good.

      Yes, but the MK V11 Vipers were more easily hacked thanked to Gaius Baltar! Notice that much of the Pegus' vipers were unaffected. They mentioned that newer vipers that were pre-upgrade or in overhaul were spared. I think they also mention that when they realized what happened, they modified the systems on the newer vipers. thanks to Baltar, 6 used spearing and being provided direct access. Then Baltar gave Gina nuke, destroyed at least 1 ship, and helped the Cylons find them.

      BSG was the success that prompted the failure of Stargate Universe. You could tell SGU was trying to copy BSG but it never really got there.
      BSG broke a lot of the old rules and was willing to "go there" when any other series at the time would have stopped.
      One of the most real and visceral moments for me was when the Cylons had some kind of virus killing them so they sent Baltar (human) to investigate a base ship comprised of Model 6 Cylons. And then that Model 6 was screaming at Baltar, blaming him for everything. So very gut-wrenching.
      I'd say the single most gut-wrenching moment was in the pilot movie. President Roslin had just visited with a little girl on an agricultural ship. Then they got the warning that the Cylons were coming back. Not all the ships had FTL and Roslin made the impossible decision to jump away, leaving the non-FTL ships to their doom. They were radioing in things like, "I hope you burn in hell!" The final twist of the knife was when she was informed that the little girl she had spoken with earlier was on a ship with no FTL. She was killed along with the rest of the crew. They didn't have to go there, as it was already bad enough. But they went there. So painful to watch, but so realistic and brutally honest.
      Enough character motivation right there to drive her forward to be the leader she was.

      @josephbondoc2561 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I liked the early focus on the pilots, though of course everyone else in the Fleet and among the Cylons had great development. Some episodes in Seasons 3 and 4 were a bit slow for me, but they had the function of developing the universe. At the end of the day, I totally agree with your comment. So say we all!

It's been 10 years since i first viewed the show and your post made me think just now, Roslin could have taken the little girl and her grandma on another ship. Of course they did not because moving writing always allows sorrow. That show saved my life. James Callis in real life could be Jesus returned. "Objectively bad" suggests it's not just your opinion (since opinion is _subjective_ ).
      If that's what you mean, then I would be curious to know the *objective* basis for your assessment. Because *both* of the usual parameters for _objectively_ assessing films (critical reception and box office receipts) mark _Ghostbusters 2016_ as much better than a "bad" film: it gets a 74% on Rotten Tomatoes and it made a profit of $85 million.
      You may not agree that those objective parameters form an accurate picture of the film's quality -- and that's your right -- but we call that an _opinion_ . And an opinion, by definition, is *subjective* , not objective. Cheers friend!

      I disagree. I loved the show, but thought they ended it horribly. Discarding all the technology that would have made sure they survived, to go off and live like and with cavemen, didn't feel like something that a military strategist like the character Adama would do. I know it's a Sci fi show, but they should have tried to make it feel and look plausible.

    • @dante6985
      @dante6985 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KRE03051 Wrote an essay to respond to you.
      I have HUGE issues with the ending too, but the rationalization was, they were trying to end the cycle of war: the more advanced species creates the robots to serve them, the robots rebel. That's what happened at Kobol, that's what happened when the 13th Tribe (of human cylons) created cylons on Earth (not.. our earth), and that's what happened at the 12 colonies. Eternal recurrence.
      And they also needed a reason why we don't have a bunch of advanced technology from 150,000 years ago.
      So it was either do what they did, rewrite earth's history to a more plausible ending where they kept medical technology and the stuff they would, y'know keep, or not come to our earth, or come to earth at a different point in time (like 1980 BSG, when brings up a host of problems).
      TL;DR: They wrote themselves in a corner and while the ending didn't make complete sense, it made more thematic sense while staying true to the existing characters. Although REALLY rough around the edges, I can't really think of a more fitting finale, unfortunately, based on where they were at the end of the third season.
      At least it was a Helluva lot better then the Game of Thrones finale.
      Can you BELIEVE GRRM wrote this on his blog?
      "Battlestar Galactica ends with 'God Did It.' Looks like somebody skipped Writing 101, when you learn that a deus ex machina is a crappy way to end a story...damn it, doesn't anybody know how to write an ending any more?"
      I know you didn't write the show after Season 4, buddy, but your show had one of the worst endings of all time. I've heard fan fiction endings that were way, way better then what the GOT writers pooped out, but have yet to heard the same for BSG's ending, despite its gaping flaws.

I wasn't nasty though like some others were. I said I'd watch it for sure but that the decision didn't make sense to me, but by then I was a HUGE DS9 (and all other Trek) fan and I knew Ron Moore's writing credits so I did trust him. NOW in retrospect, it was brilliant turning Starbuck into a woman. As a woman myself I appreciated her character for a ton of reasons, and I also liked the tension between Apollo and Starbuck.

    I've been rewatching BSG (2004 version) and I am really amazed. They really thought out some of the things that could happen if an entire species (humans) was almost wiped out and had to head to the stars....lot of politics, sex, interactions, events as well as fighting an opponent alien or robot/cylon. They did some things you wouldn't think would be shown on TV like leaving and entire ship of humans behind, marked for death, while the rest of the ships leave....that is deep and dark. A number of themes like that.

      Bryon Lape I have to admit though that Galactica 1980 season was cringeworthy, especially with Joe 90 ;)

      We didn't have a TV when Galactica 1980 was briefly on and I didn't see it until a few years ago. It was horrible.

      Original BSG was groundbreaking, hopeful, funny, exciting and awesome. 2004 BSG was a brooding, boring, space soap opera with no hopefulness, not funny, and most of the male characters from original BSG were changed into women!! Yah, what can you say it JUST SUCKED!!

    That Show made me watch SciFi again. So many memorable Characters and so many Twists. I liked the Original as a Kid. But I loved the Reincarnation even more as an Adult! And I say a Woman as Starbuck made me like the Caracter even more! So say we All!

    Better than the Wire and I love the Wire, this series was utterly transcendental. So many stories nowadays aren't worth telling and those that are told, never get the right people and treatment, but I'm glad this was did, that it exists.

      @@Briscom I never saw the original, so maybe I don't know how it was changed for the worse, but I still say that 2004 BSG was one of the best tv series I have watched. Right up there with Stargate SG1, Star trek TNG, and X-files.

    • @str.77
      @str.77 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@remyllebeau77 Stargate wasn't even a decent show but basically the same story an efffects played on loop. But it at least it had likeable characters, unlike Galactica 2004.
