I disagree, it started really strong but it drifted, it doesn't help when you realise that there was no "overarching story" from the start, that then explains why some plot points seem random, like the identity of the final 5, the writers had no idea who they where untl they decided they needed to. Hi Katie, I've watched BSG at least three times, and am gearing up to watch it yet again. It's truly a work of art, and thank you all for sharing your experience in making it. This conversation between you and Bamber broke me a little, because of you sharing what struggles as actors you face trying to be creative, and not allowed to do so. It reminded me of the similar struggles average joes like me go through in the business world, when I thought perhaps actors had more ability to be creative. It was a sad reminder we share the same boat for the most part. But be happy you have BSG as part of your legacy, which will hopefully last for generations.
love the exchange about the creative drain you get when you have to only do what is asked, and anything else will be denied. I was a modeler on the Mini-Series, and worked on Blood and Chrome, BSG was always the best gig ever, and really one of the very few times where I had any kind of creative freedom in the industry. Working with Gary Hutzel was the best experience of my career.
Still kills me that Blood and Chrome didn't get picked up. And that Caprica only had that one brilliant season. The changing of the guard at the scifi channel really wrecked that whole franchise.
Love you guys. BSG will never NEVER be forgotten. You all created something pure, something magical. You made it a living and pulsing soul, cause you all put your soul in it. A masterpiece, a work of true art. Take care.
Jamie was exactly right: most shows only want about 60% of your talent, just say the lines. BSG was 100% from everyone, and that's why it was so epic. It was like watching multiple episodes, SEASONS, of an Oscar-worthy movie that just kept going.
It’s very evident that you guys were working fully in the story. It was electrifying to be part of as an audience. You were fully alive in those scenes.
You all kicked ass on that show! You made that remake of a great show an incredible experience. There hasn't been anything like it since. Everybody on that show in front of the camera & everyone behind it really made television history. You all should be proud! Thank you!❤
Just got inspired to watch it again for the 4th time. I'm so glad it was as special for the cast and crew as it was for us viewers. But let's face it, most work environments are just "Show up and try not to screw the pooch." So rare to really get to contribute and enjoy, be excited about going into work. A real blessing.

BTW, have me on the show, because I want to talk about some aspects that are so important!!! I've love to be on with Katee, Trisha, and Jamie!
It's hard to put into words what Battlestar Galactica means to me as a fan; no TV show has ever been more obviously made with the deep love and commitment of everyone involved. It's an incomparable, unparalleled masterpiece of the human condition. Thanks Katee and Jamie for this fine dialogue!
What an incredible show. Lightning in a bottle. My wife got hooked on episode 1 and she is not a sci-fi fan at all, she didn't event watched the original show (and we are the same age). It wasn't supposed to be for her, but the show bought her attention.
This interview is amazing. What a fantastic legacy, how incredibly fortunate you both are to have participated in such work. And your attitudes about it are so down to earth and grateful. You both are shining examples for all creative people.
Just discovered this channel. BSG was one of the best shows in television history, bar none. Just finishing my fourth rewatch. Always sad because I feel like I'm saying goodbye to dear friends.
The realization that EJO was the age I am now when Battlestar Galactica started production is mindblowing. Would love to be an early thirtysomething again. 😂. Loved that show. Best re-imagining of any existing TV property I can think of too. Great cast, great production, loved the overall story arc, and did not anticipate the ending. Five stars!
It's always amazing to me that all these shows that seem to have families form from the cast and crew are always these genre shows that really go for it and take the best from everyone involved.
Great to hear it was a special experience with everyone involved in the show. Its a bit of a shock knowing how old the series now, before you know it you've moved from being a young adult to become middle aged with grown up kids, frightening!
its not just in television where people are expected to show up and do exactly as they are told, this is the case throughout the professional world where there is a "class" of people who are allowed to think and everyone else isn't. it really shows: battlestar is a fantastic series, just like fantastic businesses and fantastic leaders embrace the same philosophy: a bold vision, a clear end state and the people empowered and supported to do their best and bring their best
I rewatch BSG every winter. I had the honor to see Katie, Mary and Edward in Nashville in 2018 Fan Fest. Had my photo taken with them. I knew the opportunity for me would never come again. That was the first and last time I've ever attended such an event. There were a few fans to see them but not as many like the other actors. BSG will always have a special place with me. I worked as an engineer in broadcast television. And it's true. When you work with a great crew and chemistry, it will never come again. It's a once in s lifetime experience. Cherish that moment!
Thank you for this interview. I Loved the show and you both and the whole cast. It FELT special, at least to me, and I do not think I was alone. So that magic you felt, I felt it too, as a fan. Thank you for giving it your 100%.
BSG is still my all time favorite show, I have re-watched the series many times, it never gets old. I am glad I get to enjoy the same feeling you all do looking back. The whole cast is top notch, and love of each other is so apparent, even years down the road. So Say We All!
BSG was a huge part of my life in 2009 in Afghanistan. It was an escape between missions, but there were tons of similarities between my life and BSG. We go thru one gate, it closes behind you. Now you’re sandwiched in between two gates. The front gate opens and you floor the gas pedal and accelerate as fast as possible. It’s like a viper launch. I can’t separate BSG from my tour in Afghanistan.
BSG remains a classic, because of the script, the actors and the overall message. A show like this could never happen today, because of all the boxes that "need to be checked"!. I'm happy, the show was made the way it was made. Time for a rewatch!
The original came out in the uk as i was seeing star wars at the same time as an 8 yr old i loved it and when your version came out. All my worries disappeared in the first 5 mins. Stardust in a bottle
One of the greatest syfy shows ever made… a true masterpiece. You SHOULD be proud of what ya’ll did with it. I was an admirer of the original and probably among less than 1% of people who thought you were onto something great after I saw the miniseries. It hurt reading the vast majority of the first reactions and I was afraid the show runners might not see it through, but they did and I’m soooo glad they did. I think people will be reviewing and talking about what you were each part of long after our generations are gone 🤔
I've always held off on a re-watch, even though I own the blu-ray collection, because I felt watching it too many times would take away the magic. I held off watching for roughly 10 years and when I finally watched it again, it was even better than the first time. Sure, you may remember some of the overarching plot lines and the exciting moments, but you forget the smaller details that really make this show something special. And let me just say, Bear McCreary's music really is a character in its own right. How it uplifted every scene and tied together plot elements through his leitmotifs was just transcendent. This show caught lightning in a bottle and that's precisely why it remains my favorite show of all time, even to this day.
Mccreary's music was phenomenal. And yet I still love the pilot music just as much. Again incredible and perfect. Don't remember the composer. But where bear McCreary took the music was perfect
Loved this conversation. A long time BSG fan, and the experiences you talk about I've felt myself working in a very creative, free team in my industry when I first entered. I've worked with great people since. I've worked on great projects since. But nothing reached that level of magic. Kind of glad I didn't realise at the time how good I had it, was just able to enjoy and grow. And now I try to inject that elsewhere as much as I can - it's the people that make it magic. Thank you for BSG and this wonderfully raw conversation
I was already on board because of the casting of E.J. Olmos and M. McDonnell. As well as my Sci-Fi addiction. Which means that I saw the Lorne Greene led original in the theatre (first run lol), and watched the TV series as well. The reimagining created by you all was glorious. "Playing Parts" aside. SOME of "you" came through. Great work! PS. I am also a member of the Whatever happened to Anthony Figursky Club.
at the time, if I were in that room I might have been one of the boo birds as well, I grew up with the original BSG and naturally felt defensive when I heard a remake was in the works. So glad to be wrong, You created what to this day I still consider the best series ever made. Almos may have been bluntly right, but if the high point of your career is such a high point in the industry you're all (deservedly) blessed - thank you for doing what you did!
For me, Jamie'ss greatest scene was when he was suffocating in his viper and your floating in that flooded quarry. It still gives me goosebumps, tears. Id love to hear you talk about that scene, and floating in that quarry.
That scene in resurrection ship defined the show for me. The hope and hopelessness of life as he observes the battle and doesn’t know if he can go on anymore
I get the vibe from watching various cast interviews that BG was sort of a sci fi LOTR when it came to the camaraderie and friendship between the cast and production crew. These guys all stayed friends and they all look back at the experience with great fondness just like the LOTR guys do.
So many fans must be thinking of all the magical moments that Katee and Jamie could have brought to their post BSG roles if only they had been trusted and freed to do so. Love all the BSG family.
Listening to Katee 9 minutes in... I'm 'just' a computer programmer, yet I felt this, so unbelievably deeply. If you've ever wondered "why is this software so bad?", this is your answer. The egos of inferior people, who make it into positions of power, are the absolute undoing of anything good. The reason Jamie and Katee are 'good' and 'successful' is because they have tamed their egos. It takes greatness to do this.
This is very interesting. The honesty is awesome! I was thinking of the magic of the show just before coming across this. I creative processes things have to come together in just the right way to capture it. Take many bands who never quite match their early material. Only the greats can bottle it. Leonard skinnard would stay in an old shack of a cabin in Florida woods to write just to capture that formula. Only the greats can do it!
Great characters and dynamics between the both of them on BSG. My daughter was lucky enough to get a photo with Katee at a Supanova Event in Brisbane Australia.
One of the main reasons we'll likely never get a BSG quality sci-fi again is honestly just down to the fact that half of what made BSG great was chance. The ingredients they bought in and the recipe they delivered... You really can't plan for it to be that good. Harmonious synergy between so many actors really is chance and if you do end up with it you need to take them at their integrity and go for it.
The Expanse seemed to do a lot of that. Those actors also praise how the show was run, and what we got was very much in the same vain as BSG. These two series stand head and shoulders above everything else (Firefly gets an honourable mention).
@@malphadour The Expanse was ultimately superior for me but it took until season 2. It's got probably some of the best character interaction dialogue of the last 30 years in my opinion. Another honorable mention for me is Stargate Universe as it evolved into something that bared very little resemblance to the cheesy kids show we had watched 10 years prior, they made it very dark, adult and gritty near the end. I remember at the time it was widely criticized for being like BSG and I just thought "and that's a bad thing?" It's potential was very wasted though, if you've ever seen it you'll know about the "stones" bloody stupid plot device.
@@andrewbergman9315 Almost certainly. I mean it actually did a bit of race and sex swapping but it was so organically done without a grand pantomime that it just worked and they were characters. That said the argument could also kinda be made that they weren't swaps at all as it was always touted as a 'reimagining' rather than remake as lets face it, it wasn't very alike the 70/80s show. Both good. Almos version arguably far better written and acted though. They do actually want to remake it along with Stargate and Babylon 5 and although they've all been in hiatus for years/decades I honestly want them to wait longer for 'woke' to plateau and start to decline. It has to plateau at some point as the end result is any and all words and interaction in general are criminalized. It can't ever possibly reach that so it's gotta cease somewhere. It's a pandemic of losing the ability to comprehend context.
@@darthvirgin7157 I'm with you on this. BSG was the best thing ever, but I think the Expanse pipped it. However, I think The Expanse, or the two writers, were likely influenced by BSG - both rely on strong character writing set within a mostly real physics environment - aside from the jumps, BSG was heavily real physics based too. I hold them both up as the shows to watch for anyone who says they don't like sci fi - i just tell them these are fabulous stories that happen to be set in space, don't let the space bit put you off - they just happen to be there sometimes.
better? I don't think so. But for sure there are a bunch of other series, of movies, of animation, books or even paintings, sculptures, architecture I keep at the masterpiece level next to BSG for various reasons.
At about age 25 (when bsg was coming out) I had a job working as a concept artist, designing robots and spaceships for a TV show. I remember thinking at the time "this could be it, this might be the high point. I better enjoy it while I'm here". And it WAS the high point - for that particular career. But it wasn't the high point of my life. Since then I've got married, had a bunch of kids, so much more has happened and I wouldn't change any of it for the world. BSG was and is amazing, but it's totally ok for that to be the high point.
Am old enough to watch the original was made in 1978. Loved it immensely. When this series came out in 2003. From episode one in new it was going to be great. Caprica, and Blood and Chrome. Some of the best sci-fi. Enjoyed every episode and all the characters.
Sounds like a wonderful time for you all. I do some amateur acting at my local theatre and love it because we have forged a team, a family and love and respect each other and what each of us brings. We don’t make any money of course, but that seems to be the only way to allow people to all have input into the creative process, and I much rather do that than be a “warm prop” on someone else’s advert.
Great conversation and insights. I think it was interesting how cast and crew felt they had a stake. To me, it was one of the best dramas and it gave the audience opportunities to connect with and care for all the characters, which is rare. Thanks for the memories.
You were all ... ALL amazing and the Series was such a one of a kind and DESERVED to be made again and YOU ALL DID IT SO SO SO MUCH JUSTICE.. we wished for what you gave us and it was because of your love for your art
"...and it happened to us very young, and very early in our... sort of genesis an that's part of the frustration..." Now I want you to picture the frustration that lasts a lifetime, of *knowing* that there could be something like that, something better, where you can engage 100% and be respected, even praised for your input. Valued. And also knowing, sadly, that we never experienced it for ourselves, *nor will we.* You could keep feeling bad that you had it once in your life, for nearly a decade, or you could take a different viewpoint. You get to look back on that time with pride. Accomplishment. Joy even. And there are many people you shared that time with. Peers. Colleagues. Family.
Culte, culte, culte... A mes yeux, comme à me oreilles !
The last few minutes of this segment really hit home in 2024, with the advent of the first primitive AIs in the form of large language models. In the real world, we are inching towards the world depicted in the Caprica prequel
I remember when they said they were redoing Battlestar and since I had seen the original I wondered why they were bothering. I saw the opening movie and I knew this had started so well that it could be truly incredible and it was.
Great interview. Love the backstories and their reverence for the work they've done. Currently rewatching the series now on Season 3. A bit of an uncanny valley hearing Jamie with a British accent. (btw, iphone came out in summer 2007)
Both of you are amazing followed Your careers since start of battlestar, would be amazing to see you in some work that let you do 90% of your skillset. ❤
It’s a good problem to have. You were so good (everyone) that it made such an impression on the audience of people that may not have been aware of how long lastingly good it was. It has aged very well. You should be proud of what you did in your 20s is up in the Pantheon of GOAT sci-fi.
As a kid, I loved the '78 show, which was admittedly very 1970's. Your version is just orders of magnitude better! Having met Jamie as "Midshipman Archie Kenned", his North American accent was miraculous!
in Germany we have a sitcom „Stromberg“ which is an adaptation of british „The Office“, and people/actors are telling the same about that project which lasted for 6 seasons and one movie, while just announced another movie coming up (after years)
i met Jamie Bamber at a convention in Australia before this video super chill guy who also can roll with the jokes i asked him "So Adama what happened to the Battlestar Pegasus" he was like "ah you know it's called Battlestar Galactica not Pegasus" loved meeting him
Many of us deal with “highlights” of our lives being 20 years ago. Some of it is the rosy lens of nostalgia; we don’t think about the bad times. To this day, I still have dreams about 20 years ago. Imagine life going well for 8 years, then 16 years later at night you’re having dreams about it. And I have nightmares about life 30 years ago. BSG was a REVERSE Titanic effect…lots of “little” things came together to synergistically make the whole greater than the sum of its parts. _These are rare_ in any group effort. Like the 1980s were a Golden Age, you never know you were in it until it’s over. Many of us deal with lightning not striking twice. You have my compassion.
The only show I binge watched (after a co-worker recommended it to me) in which I watched all seasons and all mini-series movies in one week. lol Needless to say, my work suffered. lol Man, what a show. I was hooked.
I'm so happy I ran across this. You two are so cool, and may I show my shallowness by saying I had no frack'n idea you were British Jamie. Wow! I have never been a phan boy, though. Love your work both of you. I watched the original series as a boy. So it is cool to sit and watch this.
Just a little personal story of how good it was: I visited my parents for dinner every week. One evening dinner coincided with the evening BSG was on TV. My parents sat down to watch it with me. - and then watched the show through to the final episode. My parents are not sci-fi fans.

Actors up their own arse comes to mind.
I served 10 years in the US Navy and I can tell you that BSG got the military right like nothing I've ever seen.
My dad was a retired navy captain. Like the show, our house was an exercise in depression.
As a Navy CH-46D pilot, it was fun to see them incorporate pilot stuff

Thank you for your service 🇺🇸
Forget the BSG stuff, this is such and open and honest discussion. Refreshing on so many levels.
I first saw the show 12 years ago. I rewatch the whole thing every few years. It has stayed with me. It is that good. Chapeau
BSG remains a classic, because of the script, the actors and the overall message. A show like this could never happen today, because of all the boxes that "need to be checked"!. I'm happy, the show was made the way it was made. Time for a rewatch!
"The truth is like poetry... and most people fucking hate poetry"
Regarding EJO telling them it would be the pinnacle of their careers
This is one of my all time favorite shows and I loved watching this interview!
@@drewrice941 Richard Gibbs was the composer for the mini-series and if I remember correctly, McCreary was his protege.
I give my favourite shows 4-5 years between watches. I agree, you remember the big stuff, but the details are a blur.
His best scene is his testimony during Baltar's trial.
That scene in resurrection ship defined the show for me. The hope and hopelessness of life as he observes the battle and doesn’t know if he can go on anymore
Battle Star Galactica is the greatest sci fi tv show ever made in my humble opinion. I loved this show! The actors and characters made it great.
My kids are young... but I look forward to the day we all can watch BSG together.
BSG is a show that I can keep watching - once in the few years we watch the whole series again... and again and again.
Thank you for the amazing experience I've enjoyed watching BSG with my brothers and sisters, and I was blown away each and every episode felt so real!
A great life is being able to look back with gratitude. And you have no problem doing that.
I remember at the time it was widely criticized for being like BSG and I just thought "and that's a bad thing?" It's potential was very wasted though, if you've ever seen it you'll know about the "stones" bloody stupid plot device.
besides the fact that a series coming out now would be riddled from top to bottom with woke bullshit
Has there ever been anything better than BSG? It was wonderful hearing the two of you discuss why.
“the Expanse”, another sci-fi show that had to move to Amazon.
i love BSG, don’t get me wrong. but “the Expanse”, might just be slightly better.
Babylon 5 is on und same level for me. But they are very different shows
@@darthvirgin7157 Interesting! I've heard a lot of good things about The Expanse but haven't watched it yet.
Just recently I rewatched this amazing series, it’s just cosmic to see this couple here and now
Am old enough to watch the original was made in 1978.
"...and it happened to us very young, and very early in our... sort of genesis an that's part of the frustration..."
Now I want you to picture the frustration that lasts a lifetime, of *knowing* that there could be something like that, something better, where you can engage 100% and be respected, even praised for your input. Valued. And also knowing, sadly, that we never experienced it for ourselves, *nor will we.*
You could keep feeling bad that you had it once in your life, for nearly a decade, or you could take a different viewpoint.
You get to look back on that time with pride. Accomplishment. Joy even. And there are many people you shared that time with. Peers. Colleagues. Family.
Wind out of your sails, kid your talking about life for half the people. I wish the world was a better place. Love your work, don't ever change.
Culte, culte, culte...
A mes yeux, comme à me oreilles !
This 14 minute vid is gonna cost me hours. Gotta rewatch the whole series now. :-)
Just thinking about it myself😒😏
The last few minutes of this segment really hit home in 2024, with the advent of the first primitive AIs in the form of large language models. In the real world, we are inching towards the world depicted in the Caprica prequel
Thank you for these conversations. It was the best TV series ever.
No surprise really, he was on Hornblower as a teenager
Both of you are amazing followed Your careers since start of battlestar, would be amazing to see you in some work that let you do 90% of your skillset. ❤
Can’t believe you all got booed. One of the greatest shows on television! Loved seeing you all at the San Diego comic con.
One of the great dramas ever. It still holds
Amazing… truly thank you both for the best TV series in history…. It will live forever
This collaborative creative environment also happened on Deadwood. Two of the best shows of the 2000s.
This was very brave of you two. Thank you.
in Germany we have a sitcom „Stromberg“ which is an adaptation of british „The Office“, and people/actors are telling the same about that project which lasted for 6 seasons and one movie, while just announced another movie coming up (after years)
Loved that series. The Mrs and I watched every episode. Something special about that show.
Re-watching BSG now for the first time since it originally aired; just as good the second time around!
i met Jamie Bamber at a convention in Australia before this video super chill guy who also can roll with the jokes i asked him "So Adama what happened to the Battlestar Pegasus" he was like "ah you know it's called Battlestar Galactica not Pegasus" loved meeting him
BSG is my favorite series of all time, and it is so gratifying to see that the cast was so invested and involved in the success! Kudos to all!
Tremendous series... Apollo and Starbuck !
Thank you so much. !!
Battlestar was Superb & the cast & space scenes we're Amazing !
I love you guys. Thank you for doing this. Loved that show. Still do. Thanks.
