Tonex Pedal and Line6 HX Effects - Stereo Cab and DI Tones

- This is just a quick one with me going through some tones with the ToneX Pedal and the HX FX.
I've set up a patch in the HX where all the FX are basically stereo (ToneX does just the amp sim and all FX are coming from the HX), as it would be in a big rack setup :)
The main outs of the HX are going through my ART SLA-1 power amp into 2 1x12 cabinets (one is a Mesa Thiele with an EV speaker, the other is a Crate 1x12 with a Tone Tubby speaker). There's no IR going to the main out. The DI signal is routed through send 1&2 of the HX and has a stereo IR block added (this would be the signal to send to FOH in a live situation, so there would be no need to mic the cabs).
I'm just randomly switching back and forth between the camera audio and the recorded DI tone.
Guitar used is my trusty Ibanez AZ2204

This combo has more options of effects and amps than the quad cortex
Protools need a plug-in to use your iPhone as a mic… that room tone is pure awesomeness

Hi Nico, great , great playing as usual ...- Have you notice hiss from hx effects when playing with high gain? - Instead of the 4 method cable could be used the 2 inputs and the 2 outputs fro HX to make difeterent signal paths?, or this is not posible with hx effects? ..... - What about the Soldano captures, can you please post the link ? ... thanks in advance

Bit of advice please! Fairly new to the digital world, it’s bit of a mind field for me! I’ve been looking at this combination of the tonex+hx effects for portability and quick set up. Would be using without any cabs on stage, just a monitor.
Are you running this into a power amp then to FOH?
Or just straight to FOH?

hello, If you turn off
all effects in the hx effects, and leave it with just clean sound from Tonex, no means bypass on the hx Effects, its colored the tone of the tonex preset , is like a tone sucker, like other multieffects?
Add a couple of expression pedals and this is the setup I'm going to be putting together for an "ampless" gig rig.
I have an HX FX and I want to buy a Tonex to do this exact same setup but, one question: Do you notice any change in tone or feel when Tonex goes into HX FX loop?
I've not tried that, but you'll have a tad more latency with that setup as there'll be an extra DA-AD conversion happening in the HX FX
What about the overall latency combining the two digital devices? Can you feel it playing through them?
ToneX has around 3ms and HX Effects is 1.8ms
4.8ms is less than Focusrite Scarlett delay for example which is around 10ms

@@claujnog Hx fx has 1.8ms if latency if you run through IN and OUT but if you connect tonex in the fx loop of Hx fx you will have an overall latency of 6ms (I have checked it on my own), that's because the loop connection itself will add further latency for an additional ad/da conversion...
If I pay attention to it I can perceive it while I play but it is not a value that actually disturbs my performance
So you're sacrificing the fx loop option in order to split to outputs to foh with IR and to your guitar amp without IR? Smart! The only thing that's not possible is to put HX drives before the Tonex, but I suppose that's worth for splitting the outputs from within HX and you put hardware drives before the tonex input? Chain would be tonex out to hx in then. Didn't thought of using 2 hx sends to create a stereo output set, well done!
If I wanted to do that, I could also use the "big" helix, that has more outs and loops;) And yes, the chain here is Tonex out into the HX. But if this will become a live setup, I'll put these 2 in the rack along with my VoodooLab GCX , put analog drives in there too and use my big midi foot controller for the switching of. More is more ;)

Amazing tone and playing! I just got my Tonex and I had the HX Effects from a few months ago and I am only just getting to grips with the rig. So far I haven't found any of the "stock" models that really moved me, but I think the ones you are using rhere are perfect. Any chance you could post the links to those captures?

I'm always amazed at companies that ship great tech with terrible presets. It makes no sense!

No, I did not use the HB PSU t o power the HX, I did that with the OneSpot PSU. The HB was just used to lift the HX to have the right angle to film (otherwise the displays would not have been readable) :D

Hi Nico, I was wondering if you can help me out with a question. I ordered the tonex pedal for amp and cab tone and am looking to also get an HX effects for extra effects options. I have no idea how I would connect the two units (the tonex pedal and the HX effects). I want to go from my guitar to hx effects to tonex pedal and then go usb out to computer and out to my FRFR headrush speaker. I would be using the tonex as an audio interface as well. How would I do this in very simple terminology (which inputs and outputs do I use?). Also would the hx effects have to be in front of the tonex pedal in the signal chain so that when the signal goes out to my computer through the audio interface of the tonex pedal it includes the effects?

@@haydenstulen3422 Yes! the HX effects has an effects loop. So I just put the Tonex pedal through the effects loop of the HX effects (the send and return inputs and outputs on the back of the unit) and then on the HX effects interface you add in a effects loop block to each preset. Then you send the output to the FRFR speaker.

i wonder if you could help me with a question since you are using the HX FX.
i have victory kraken amp running with torpedo captor (regular) to my pc (i have no real cab at all).
i wonder , if ill buy HX FX , is there a way to connect it with PRE fx and POST fx (4 cable ish) but also to use the HX FX IR loader , and use headphones \ monitors direct to the HX FX? without the use of the pc? just the hardware.
or do i must have cabinet?

Yes, you can absolutely do this;) Guitar into the input of the HX FX, Send 1 of the HX to the input of the Kraken, the Speaker Out of the Kraken into your Captor, the Line out of the Captor into the Return 1 of the HX FX, your amp is the represented by the FX Loop 1 block in the HX FX and you can put your FX pre and post. The Out of the HX then goes to your monitors. The IR block in the HX can go right after your FX Loop block;)

Create a Y split. In Path B put the IR and then in the Mixer (last one of your chain) put path A 100% L and B 100% R.

That setup is literally straight guitar into tonex into HX, I’ve tried 4CM too, it has some nice benefits, but kills the option for IR and cab use at the same time
Hmm, if you use 4CM and have the Tonex is in the HX effects loop, and positioned as Wah>Distortion>Tonex>MOD/Delay/Reverb, you can use the Amp and Cab sim in the Tonex, which should be an excellent solution?
Can you go stereo into the Tonex and out of it's stereo output using it's cab modeling rather than using IR's from the Hx Effects? I notice it only has a mono input so I'm guessing not.
Maybe I'm wrong about this but you should be able to put the tonex in the FX loop of the hx effects and treat it like a normal effect block. If you turn the IR off in the tonex you can bring back the mono signal from the tonex and put the time based effects in stereo between the amp block and the cab loader?
@@karankulkarni4204 Right but the HX effects isn't an audio interface. So if you wanted to use the Tonex Pedal as an audio interface but with the stereo effects from HX Effects - I don't think there is a way to do that. Which doesn't really make sense because why give Tonex Pedal stereo outputs if it can't use stereo inputs except though Amplitude software?
The thing is, the Tonex captures are in mono, as a normal amp is mono, even the cab section in the tonex is mono. Only the reverb is stereo. since I don't use the inbuilt reverb I can go all the way mono. and I did turn off the internal Cab to split the signal in the HX FX and have one signal going direct with Cab (IR from the HX FX) and one without the Cab going to the power amp and to the real cabinets.
And yes, you could use the Tonex in a Loop of the HX FX to be able top put effects in before and after the Tonex, but I didn't do that here.

How is the feel/latency?
HX effects hat about 2.3ms. Tonex with the newest fw has 2.1ms. So if you use it in the loop of the hx, you have 2.3 + 2.1 + 2.3ms = 6.7ms. Little more than a kemper or quad cortex (3-4ms depening on preset).
Also, which DI's do you use?
Oh, there was no DI boxes used here, as I was going direct to the interface, live I’d put a pair of passive Klotz DIs in there.

Why do you put an IR into the HX effects if the tonex already has a Head + Amp sim?
So I can split the signal in the HXFX and send one signal to FOH with IR and the other to my cabs (without IR)

Why? The HX Effects has a whole lot of super quality effects, the Tonex does "just" the amps plus a bit of reverb and compressor and noise gate. In my opinion it's a killer combination;)
