I just bought the TONEX pedal a few months ago ... after playing with the computer based version of the software. The pedal will make playing under the typical constraints on stage these days much more practical. In the studio, it will still be my tube amps ... why use an imitation of the real thing when you can have the original. Very satisfied so far with TONEX.
I was looking at this pedal, the NUX Amp Academy, an HX Stomp, the Humboldt Simplifier, and a few other options. I finally decided on the cheapest option available - the Joyo Preamp House R-15. No programming, no micro/sub menus, no edit software, no delay or reverb, just the pedal, with 9 amps (a clean and a dirty option for each). Just turn the knobs and save one clean and one dirt preset. That's it. Plain and simple. Oh, it does have an FX loop. And sounds great.
I am using one live. It is definitely the best sound I have ever had front of house. I use 4 amps captures. JTM 45 Plexi 68 BF Fender And Tone junkie Ac44. I have also used it as a stomp box and that sounds equally as good...... This box and amp library is absolute value for money!!

I've been very happy with the ToneX and combined with an H90 it's been my choice for low volume home practice and recording. I think some of the software UI will improve over time and I think they intended the workflow to be that you would solely use the software to play and tweak your presets and then transfer them over to the unit. I think it would make a lot of sense for IK to add some kind of social media style upvoting and commenting to the amp captures. Also the ability to tip someone for a cool capture would be nice. Also, I've found it helpful to name all of my captures starting with my initials. So for example, "TF DRRI Clean" This way when I search the library for "TF" all of my captures come up.

About the workflow to edit the presets, you can put the Tonex pedal in interface mode (Global Settings > Operation > Interface) and then you can tweak the presets and try them at the same time on the pedal. When you're happy with the sound, you can copy it to the pedal.
Dude, because the app is unanimously so clunky and frustrating, your captures pretty much make this pedal worth buying to the population at large now! No doubt you deserve a commission for this fantastic work!! Thanks for always keeping it real man!

I’m bit confused on usage. Is this a a good pedalboard option. That is. Dirt in front with delay snd chorus etc after direct into an audio interface or foh board? As usual. Excellent content.
What is the learning curve like for these new units? I'm a fairly simple player . I always focused on my playing rather than effects because the guitar is so hard to Master.
That ADA sounds so great. Might be because I grew up in the 80's but that is just the ultimate tone for that era of hard rock and metal. Of course I downloaded it right away.
Personal opinion: FM3 sounds better as the “amp”. Only reason I’d consider toneX with the FM3 is if I needed all of the fractal cpu for effects and none left for an amp/cab block
Hey Boss. Lace Sensors in the Strat at the end? What type are they and do they still have a bit of sterile sound or what? Thank You for the video/information and Best Regards and Best Wishes!
the bug sounds like the sampling has clipped (overload/saturation) on the specific notes ? digital clipping can produce silence (flat oscillation at max level = no sound) , that's why I think it could be due to clipping...
The other issue with capture is the static nature of them. Often captures won't need tweaking because the whole point is they're a great sound right out of the box for the really good ones. But everybody is diffferent. I think Leo Gibson did the math if you want to capture every setting on even a simple amp like friedman pink taco it'd take 30,000 plus captures and over 400 days of amp training. Alternatively, it might be possible to capture the each knob range? Like run the bleep bloops through and it prompts you to turn Bass knob full range back and forth, then prompts you to do gain knob etc.
I'm pretty sure the weird captures were dropouts in the capture process, i was told to try increasing your buffer if it happens during the capture process
Great review, thanks so much. I think a mic preamp XLR input with phantom power would be good then its your interface too. Software looks clunky but so is a lot of amp sim software. NI's Guitar Rig is horrid too. The Deluxe Reverb capture you did sounds aces. Should Plague Scythe get a link?
I wonder if it's possible to use TONE X as an external IR player? I mean, is there an option to turn all other blocks off on the pedal itself and just leave the several cabs to click through the show? And also, does it behave like a tube amp in terms of rolling back volume? Does it clean up well? I tried a few presets on the TONE X software and wasn't impressed exactly by that point. Other than that, the unit sounds awesome and seems to translate tones well!
I think the biggest problem with user captures is that most people don't know how to mic a cab, or don't always have the best environment for miking a cab. The vast majority of captures include the cab and they are usually cringy. Tonex allows you to "disable" the cab but it's using some sort of algorithm to remove it and it just does not work well.
Every time I watch videos on these new Tonex captures I think someone somewhere with lots of time and money has or will rent a proper studio out and spend months capturing as many amps and cabs as possible. If I were a guitarist, that's what I'd be doing, but I'm a drummer and have software like Superior Drummer that's already done it for me.
Thats exactly my experience with theTonex. Its like for one good capture there is 20 that are bad/mediocre. I think that paid capture packs is the way to go.
Yup, I've found some captures that make me absolutely love the ToneX more than anything else I've owned, but trawling through the user captures is definitely a lesson in just how many people have no idea how to record guitar, haha. I know tone is in the ear of the beholder and all that, but some of them sound like they recorded a transistor practice amp under a pile of blankets down the end of a hallway.
With my blown out Line 6 XP and my current GT-100, I can run music through my pedal box to practice to. Can I do this with TONEX, or do I just hear the guitar?
Exactly my thoughts, re: the criticisms of this thing. I had it for a few weeks and struggled to resolve a long list of issues. After most of them were answered, i was still left with one or two glitchy problems, but the most frustrating was that the app did not operate as an editor for the pedal. I would have kept the ToneX pedal had there been even basic integration between the app and the hardware. But, i returned it and i'll stay with my Kemper for a while longer. The ToneX sounds great, though.... Maybe i'll revisit it in a year, if the UI has been evolved, but as it stands, it's a ridiculous mishmash of two many independent elements, with illogical layouts and integration. If you're the kind of person who just wants to play the pedal out of the box, or maybe just load in a handful of profiles and then not rely on the app again, it's probably a great device. But, i am used to the Kemper and having constant interfacing between the editor and the device. in fact, i never even touch the Kemper itself-all the manipulation is in Rig Manager. Which is simple to use and just makes sense-and this is after i used to think it was kludgy. But, in comparison to ToneX, Rig Manager is brilliant.
Yeah when cheap stuff like the NUX/Mooer modellers have full software editors it makes you wonder why 'industry leaders" can't get one done for launch.
I have one on the way and was just wondering. Can you save these captures to your PC and load them on to a hard drive as a backup for ones you like? Or is it only able to store them on the unit itself?
Very cool device, have a friend that has one and loves it, but I couldn't agree more about editing at the component level. I love the idea of profiles/captures on paper, but I'd pull my hair out coming from an AxeFXIII. I don't need 200 different amps, but I need to be able to pick the one I want and start from scratch.
how does the sound react to the volume pot on the guitar? I tried UAFX pedal and it was incredible in how it reacted. Wasn’t too impressed with the tone though 😢
My complains about this product are the same as yours. No Fx Loop (if I add a delay after the output I'll not hear it in headphones), no stereo input, strange stereo output, difficult to use (there are two volumes)... It's a pity because it sounds very good
So the Kemper rig manager has both a crowd rating system for rigs in the online rig exchange and you can also quickly audition them on your actual kemper by double clicking on the rig. So not sure why you lumped the Kemper in with the others?
I've been getting some great sounds with the Tonex VST, but the software is clunky as hell, and the pedal is not ready for the big time. But the platform could be great if users with sick amp collections fill it with great captures.
Metal preamp pedal shootout next? :) recently downsized from an or100 and orange 4x12 to a fender 59 bassman combo to save my poor ol’ back. The combo slays and I feel like a rabbit hole of preamp pedals is about to appear. Would love a video on that kinda thing. Revv 3, be-od, victory v1 kraken ect Nice videos you are an absolute gem of a resource and seem like a top bloke :)
Kemper doesn't have an FX loop either and with a complete pre-amp/power-amp capture/picture not really feasible. I suppose you could do it with 2 Tonex pedals by capturing a pre-amp on one and a power amp on the other and then insert your effects between them. Really only modelers not capture/profilers are going to be able to have an FX loop.
I'm not suggesting being able to place something between the pre/power amp like an fx loop on an amp, more a "stereo insert" that can be placed after the amp/cab and routed to the stereo outs or headphones
Hm, about the ranking captures complain - Kemper gives you that 1 > 5 * rating option, plus marking a favorite captures. Not sure what you are missing here. 🙂
Leon, thank you for sharing your captures for free. However...if one only has the PC version, we can not access them. Another channel, Tone Junkie, managed to make a capture of a "Purple Plexi" and through a link on his site I was able to import that capture. Is there any way you could look into that? Your captures...especially the ADA MP1 caught my attention since I had both the MP1 and MP2 back in the day. Thanks for at least considering this. Great job showing the pro's and con's of the unit.
You know I don’t want to have anything to do with capturing sound. I want to know how it functions as an amp with tons of sounds to lode in it. I’m done lugging around all these have tube amps.
I'm getting ready to purchase either this unit or the Boss GT1000 Core. So far I'm sold on the Boss unit because of the reviews and the reputation Boss has and especially the 32bit AD/DA. This unit is cheaper but you know what they say, you get what you pay for. I've seen some of the reviews this unit sounds great. Has great effects. The GT1000 competes with Fractal and Helix. Unless you can hear these units in person you can't really tell what's going to reach you. I'm going to try the Boss unit I can always return it. I don't think I'll be disappointed.
Should I sell my Boss GT5 for this Leon? I find the GT 5 is as good as anything . Granted some of the distortion effects aren't as good as the modern units but everything else is fine. Please advise what would you buy? I had the GT -1 and sold it and kept my GT5.
I recently quit my live impro band, going solo in reaper and all.. almost bought the tonex pedal but then came NAM.. and now things got more crazy, just ordered the i/o one thing 😛
Most of the complaints literrally don't take into account that it's meant to for 399$ just an amp profiler. its not a multi effect unit, they added basic effects as a plus. If you want a tube screamer in front, put a the pedal in front. That's how it's meant to be used, total nonsense to complain about that or even point it out

Took the words right out of my mouth! Great vid. Thank you!
I use it in my Helix rack loop, works great allowing me to use high dsp effects!
It's THE sound
@@LeonTodd Hi Todd - which IR did you use for the ADA?
Imagine this as an amp + Fm3, amp is in the FX loop and the Fm3 controls the patch change of the tonex over Midi!
Yeah golds. I really like them
the bug sounds like the sampling has clipped (overload/saturation) on the specific notes ? digital clipping can produce silence (flat oscillation at max level = no sound) , that's why I think it could be due to clipping...
Yeah that video Leo did is GREAT. Very curious to see where potential hybrid approaches go.
Leo is an amazing guy! Love his music and his vids.
Problem with that is that the knobs interact with each other on tube amps.
26:00 I couldn't even figure out how to do this. Thanks Leon!
Delay instead of reverb would be cool, would also like to see the option of a boost instead of a compressor
That JTM45 and Deluxe Reverb Oh MY FREAKING GOLLY ❤🎉
A tale as old as time. This was the only life we had as Kemper owners back like 10 years ago when it came out and there weren’t any pro captures.
Question for you, Could you use the ToneX with a Boss Katana MKII amp as a live rig and have it sound good?
Yeah. Remove cab sim and run the tone X into the fx loop to just use the katana’s power section.
With my blown out Line 6 XP and my current GT-100, I can run music through my pedal box to practice to. Can I do this with TONEX, or do I just hear the guitar?
I love the tonex pedal! Use it in the 1st send and return in my Helix rack. Not using the virtual IR or IR loader. I use the Helix IR loader
My not so favorite thing is the lack of an effects loop!
Great job !! Captures sound sick!!
EXCELLENT review, thanks a lot!!!
My pleasure!
I have one on the way and was just wondering. Can you save these captures to your PC and load them on to a hard drive as a backup for ones you like? Or is it only able to store them on the unit itself?
Little Tonex can't cope with Bogner's humongous testacles.
🤣😂🤣😂 got me there...good one.
Totally agree!
how does the sound react to the volume pot on the guitar? I tried UAFX pedal and it was incredible in how it reacted. Wasn’t too impressed with the tone though 😢
My complains about this product are the same as yours. No Fx Loop (if I add a delay after the output I'll not hear it in headphones), no stereo input, strange stereo output, difficult to use (there are two volumes)... It's a pity because it sounds very good
I really wish that it had the ability to do 4cm built in and also to choose a cab IR for one out and not for another.
Why doesent it have an xlr output? Do i need a di box to go i to a pa
Hi leon..what exactly ir u use.. original Lt tv mix ?
So the Kemper rig manager has both a crowd rating system for rigs in the online rig exchange and you can also quickly audition them on your actual kemper by double clicking on the rig. So not sure why you lumped the Kemper in with the others?
*Todd!! Do you have a way for creating proper PITCH DETUNE in Amplitube 5???*
Thank you Mr.
I've been getting some great sounds with the Tonex VST, but the software is clunky as hell, and the pedal is not ready for the big time. But the platform could be great if users with sick amp collections fill it with great captures.
Would love to see contemporary metal tones in future reviews of gear 🤘🏿
Do you plan to cover the new Tonex One pedal? - it looks amazing!!
The kemper is able to place the EQ pre or post n the Rig Manager software.
Nicely done Kev
Thanks for sharing your captures
My pleasure!
Revv 3, be-od, victory v1 kraken ect
Nice videos you are an absolute gem of a resource and seem like a top bloke :)
Much appreciated mate :)
Sounds like clipping of the Analogue to Digital Converter with captures of ultra high-gain amps like the Überschall.
Thanks buddy Kevin
Good on you, Kevin! Cheers, Daniel
My big problem with the ToneX Pedal from a bass players point of view is that there's no way to send the signal out the second output without the IR.
Does it have any clean sounds ?
I’ve got a core , totally pleased !
Should I sell my Boss GT5 for this Leon?
I find the GT 5 is as good as anything . Granted some of the distortion effects aren't as good as the modern units but everything else is fine.
Please advise what would you buy? I had the GT -1 and sold it and kept my GT5.
This basically just does amp/cab modeling andf a bit of reverb, so it won't replace it if you need chorus/delay etc
How many amps and cabs come preloaded, and what are they?
I recently quit my live impro band, going solo in reaper and all.. almost bought the tonex pedal but then came NAM..
and now things got more crazy, just ordered the i/o one thing 😛
Is the Tonex pedal required in order to use the Captures? Or is the software enough.
Software is enough
Most of the complaints literrally don't take into account that it's meant to for 399$ just an amp profiler. its not a multi effect unit, they added basic effects as a plus. If you want a tube screamer in front, put a the pedal in front. That's how it's meant to be used, total nonsense to complain about that or even point it out
Appreciate your video. I just now received my Tonex a couple of days ago. I'm trying to do my homework before I fire this box up. I will have to try it through my PA, My PRS MT-15,and Head Phones. Seems to be a little overwhelming right now, but I will dive in. Wish me luck. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
How goes it ?
How would you compare it to axe fx?
