To add even more badassery and a slight correction to your analysis, the Dragon is indeed the one "singing", but the person hes singing to is his childhood companion and master Yharim. Who is the VILLIAN. The enemy who's "ascended beyond your control" is the PLAYER. The dragon is warning his master that the player will kill him if he fails.

I think what makes this song hit hard for me is that Yharon (the Jungle Dragon) and Yharim have been together since Yharon was born, back when he hatched and saved Yharim from a fiery death - but unfortunately couldn't save Yharim's family, which is what started Yharim's depressive spiral and villainy. This song is Yharon finally turning to his lifelong friend after all the destruction they've caused and saying "I will support you no matter what, but you *must* know that if you continue, I *can't* continue with you; and I'm _scared_ for you, that you will *not* be able to handle that after everything we've been through."
Yharon is more concerned for Yharim than Yharim is for himself, so after Yharom goes down in flames, who will be there to support him after?
(To answer your question, Marco: I would *love* a full livestream for this OST! I'm especially interested in your reaction to the Devourer of Gods' "nonstop" battle medley!)

@@MarcoMeatball Fun trivia time (assuming this gets to you): The jungle dragon’s master, Yharim, is planned to be the mod’s final boss. It is suggested, though never outwardly told, that he may have some degree of regret over some few of his actions during the course of the lore. Moreover it almost seems as if he is deliberately letting his foe become strong, as the lore items (literally items that give you snippets of lore) would seem to suggest.
Yharon, the jungle dragon, is apprehensive about his master’s, Yharim’s, actions, but since he was essentially hatched while carrying a severely injured Yharim on his back, that sense of loyalty is well founded and admirable.

I've always felt that this song is Yharon's plea for recognition. It questions "was that all your intention?" and following the later mentions of Yharim's depression makes it seem as though Yharim wanted an enemy strong enough kill him and doesn't see how much Yharon cares for him. This song (In my opinion) is Yharon pleading that Yharim see that he has a life worth living, and for him to see how much he wishes that he lives. The sentence "I will go forth and win your wars, but if I should die before you continue, you shall have heard my final dying roar" makes me feel as though Yharon is saying "I will fight for your life but if one day I cannot protect you from yourself I ask that you acknowledge my loyalty toward you, and that I tried to reach you".

Late to the party, wanted to talk about the context of this song used to have (that as of now was changed and I think it plays from the start of the fight).
In previous patches, you had to fight Yharon and when he'd flee when he's about to die, unlocking some changes in the world and some gear upgrades with it. After that, you had to fight him again (all this had a completely different boss theme) and when he dropped to 10% HP he would start regenerating until 100% while the heroic part plays (timed almost perfectly) and the lyrics began when you were able to hurt him again.
It was effectively a last stand song, he knew you had the power and the will to kill him (at that point, you already did that twice). That made this song extremely powerful and it makes me really sad it was eventually changed to a single fight with no regen.

Generally, it is thought that the point of view in this song is based on the fact that Yharim, the master of the Jungle Dragon of this song, is in massive depression. And the dragon wonders if, perhaps, his master has orchestrated this entire situation, the protagonist of the game in the first place, all the challenges and fights, all in order to be able to watch his empire burn to the ground, and then step into the fire themselves and turn to ash along with it.
I never even thought about just how much this is reflected in this song, not just based on the lore and the words, but also by the tone of the voice and the music itself.

You ALMOST got the entire story correct just from the song alone, which is impressive. What happens is, Yharon (the jungle dragon) has been with yharim (the owner and main antagonist) since he hatched from an egg, also saving yharims’ life after his family was killed. Yharon is the one singing the song, and he is singing to yharim. As the player, you make a character that you can gain materials to upgrade with (terraria is like a sandbox game, but with a goal.) The character in this mod is trying to kill yharim after he has caused a ton of construction. The ending part of Stained, Brutal Calamity is actually the final boss of the game talking to you about how powerful he is, and that you wont be able to beat him, so theres the explanation for that.

Totally recommend just running the game with a bunch of mods and breaking it wide open. My favorite is def the Overflow bow from Split that can kill post-ML bosses while being pre-Plantera. It's nuts. All you need to do is throw on Jester's arrows and watch things melt from the raw attack speed. Even outside that, it's fun to see what amazing bosses each dev comes up with, and spending 3 hours compiling a list of bosses in proper order at midnight because you're too stubborn to download Boss Checklist is fun too. I would love to see you livestream this, here's some things to note though (regarding the soundtrack)
    1. Between this and Stained, Brutal Calamity, there's only really one other song with some sort of spoken lyrics. You're going in mostly for the melodies, but goodness those melodies are some of the most insanely unique, beautifully mixed art that I've listened to
    2. The music for this mod is VASTLY different from Terraria itself, so if you ever do something with Terraria, have VERY different expectations. Both Terraria and the Calamity mod have very good soundtracks, but the style is super different
    3. The entire Calamity OST is comprised of several composers. DM DOKURO has made most of the music, but his album release "The Tale of a Cruel World" is not the full soundtrack, just 99% of the work he did for it. Don't get me wrong, you'll only be missing out on a couple songs if you listen to that specific album, but if you want the full OST experience, there's videos on TH-cam showing the up-to-date version of the soundtrack
FINALLY, I would recommend listening to the Devourer of Gods nonstop mix by DM DOKURO himself, as it is better mixed and designed than the official soundtrack release.
Your breakdown of the music and reactions are wonderful, keep it up!

I’m so glad you are really taking these themes seriously because DM Dokuro has so much respect for story and character building, even during scenes where the music is not the focus. I would love an in-depth view on Scourge of the Cosmos and Universal Collapse, the music behind the Devourer of Gods bossfight. An inter-dimensional worm capable of gaining the strength of it’s food. Through the ages it feeds and feeds, until it meets the player. It begins as an arrogant villain, playing with the character as it still sees you as a weak mortal, saying things like “you are no god, but I will feast upon your flesh regardless”. Towards the end it sees your strength and accepts it’s fate. The music is godly lmao

DM Dokuro's work on the Calamity mod is some of the best video game music I've heard.. ever. The occasional lyrics only serve to elevate the experience, and give us insight into the lore and thought process of the characters that we'd usually have to scour through a wiki page for. The Dragon's final battle, its undying loyalty to Yharim, all of it is encapsulated so well in just one song.
I'm not sure how many people there are in this world who can make something like this. And I'm even less sure of how many there are that would be willing to make something like this for what is essentially someone else's passion project.
I don't remember if he was paid for this. But if he was paid, it doesn't matter how much he was paid, because it wasn't enough. Even if we don't include how badly the community treated him.

one of my absolute favorite things about the whole ost, not just this specific song, is the use of bells. DM Dokuro has snuck in the sound of these grand church bells into almost every single main boss theme, and it's been theorized that those bells are the sound of the Player's Character wielding their weapon and preparing to fight seriously/ actually attacking at full power
the bells are always the same clear, bright tone and almost always at the same exact pace regardless of the songs overall tone.

  • @alicetheaxolotl
    @alicetheaxolotl 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

Also, something neat about this song is it doesn't start playing immediately when you fight the boss. It plays a different song (Infernal Catharsis), then when he's at ~55% health, he shifts to the second phase and this starts playing. Which, on top of just being a huge morale boost when you hear this epic music start playing, feels like it's Yharon realizing you're a threat, at which point he starts taking you seriously and getting more desperate.

  • @Spartan9320
    @Spartan9320 2 ปีที่แล้ว +29

A sad thing is, something I feel should be mentioned. Is this was the last, or one of the last songs DM Dokuro did for the Calamity mod. The reason being of course, people/the community being hyper critical, judgmental, and angry at the people behind the mod for basically no reason other than 'its taking them too long' or demanding he do more songs.
I honestly don't know the full story or reasoning...but these harsh people essentially killed DM Dokuro's desire to continue on the music for the mod.
All of his songs are fantastic in their own rights. This is one of mine and my friends favorites, though we like pretty much all of Calamity Mod's songs.

From my (admittedly vague) understanding of it, I think people were hassling DM Dokuro over Supreme Calamitas' theme specifically and were being *extremely* demanding and rude when "they were taking too long". His talent deserves all the time in the world and I have a high respect for his work, so to see the whole incident happen a few years back was really sad. He's still working on some original songs though and they're very good as well, so I wish him the best in his future, no matter what he does! 💙
Edit: for people who might be interested, the new A Dance Of Ice And Fire DLC, Neo Cosmos, had a few tracks composed by DM Dokuro, and they're absolute bangers too! So if you wish to support his work, maybe take a look over to the Neo Cosmos OST on TH-cam and check out the game on Steam if you like rhythm stuff!

i would love to see a whole livestream of this ost, it's one of my favorite game osts and it's from a fan made mod for the game which is so incredible. the lyrical breakdown was great, and it's so cool to see how you can pick up the stories almost entirely accurate to the lore in game just from the music itself. really love watching your stuff, and was really happy to see roar of the jungle dragon because it's one of if not my favorite from the soundtrack :)

  • @suwuicidal

The thing I love most about this theme is that as much as it's Yharon's (the dragon) theme the entire song is him speaking to his master about the player. In the first line "The enemy ascended beyond your control or was that all your intention" the enemy is you, the player. By the time you get to the Yharon fight you have already killed multiple gods and have done a significant amount of damage to Yharon (this theme plays during his 2nd phase), so the entire theme is a warning to his master that you have become so astronomically strong to the point that he will lose to you.
I like to think of this as the player's theme and Yharon is calling out to his master, warning him of his impending doom.

3:54 _The air is getting warmer around you..._
This theme definitely the best of the mod. Not as much use of leitmotif as in Stained, Brutal Calamity but that's the final theme of the mod, kinda made as the be all, end all of the journey and challenges the player has faced. It always delivers in Yharon's 2nd phase however, and kinda just sends chills and aaaaaaaaa! Your initial analysis of the heroic style of theme made me realise something about it I actually didn't think about before, and I appreciate that: this is a desperate last stand from Yharon, and a 'final' challenge for the player. I'm not sure what the musical terminology for it it, but the final chord in the 14 second anthem shifts into a minor(?) version of itself and it really sets the gravity of the situation from both perspectives of the story and now that I see it, I love it.

Well you have listened and enjoyed those two calamity songs, now you HAVE to listen to 'The Devourer of Gods (Nonstop Mix)' by DM DOKURO. probably my favourite of his from the mod. although there are no lyrics its still a banger and a half.

this is one of the only songs I have ever listened to that can bring me spontaneously to tears and I have no idea why. It doesn't get me particularly emotional or anything. but I always come back to it every once in awhile because just listening to it gives me a feeling literally nothing else does in life. I get the chills, my eyes tear up, the lyrics are impactful and the actual writing of the song itself, the melody behind the lyrics, is amazing. I get the chills with other good music but to this day NOTHING else has made me just... tear up. yeah movies and shows make me cry sometimes because something sad happens that we've been building up to but this song... I've never even played calamity, I know literally nothing about the lore besides what I've skimmed through in youtube comments on the songs. this is a genuinely amazing song

These were probably his 2 best calamity mod songs, unfortunately now he does not make songs for the mod anymore due to some serious stuff that happened with the community. He's back to making music on his channel though! And honestly if you were to do a livestream of calamity mod music, YES, i would absolutely watch that, because the other songs might not be as impactful but they are still bangers.

An important distinction to note is that this track is the first vocal track of the mod and shows up at what’s arguably the penultimate showdown in the story after several hours of subdued/inferred storytelling, which makes this track hit much harder in the moment.

a full livestream to this ost would be lovely! in my opinion many people just overlook the ost since it's just a "mod" for a video game. every song in this ost is something that you can genuenly react to and isn't just used as "background noise".
though i will have to say while there are lyrics for some songs in this ost, most dont. just a heads up

Yes yes yes I 100% want a full livestream of the entire soundtrack. One thing to note is many of the songs loop like this one but not all. Also Roar of the Jungle Dragon’s lyrics are from the point of view of one of the bosses in the game, his name is Yharon the Jungle Dragon and his master is a character who is an enemy of the player and the enemy/rival that is spoken of in the song is the player.

I found about your channel due to your "Stained, Brutal Calamity" and have been loving your videos on different themes, especially covering one of my favorite OST's. Even though "Roar of The Jungle Dragon" and "Stained, Brutal Calamity" are the only lyrical songs out of the OST, I'd LOVE to hear your intake on the rest of the amazing music DM Dokuro composed for this. And if you do, I HIGHLY suggest also looking at the gameplay where these songs take place, that way, you can understand the intensity of the fights whilst the music plays. Amazing stuff, please keep this up!!!
