When I first caught word of the Terraria: Calamity mod, I was a tad dismissive, mentally. How could a mod to Terraria really be as good as people suggested? I've never been one for the survival/world building type of game so I didn't really bat an eye at it. Well, I was clearly wrong. After listening to Stained, Brutal calamity: • Opera Singer Reacts to... Roar of the Jungle Dragon: • Opera Singer Reacts: R... and eventually to the whole soundtrack: • Opera Singer Reacts: R... I came to realize that this music was much deeper than my original misconceptions had been. The devourer of Gods, further enhances the belief that ‪@DMDOKURO‬ is a marvelous composer. A dark symphony of complex moving parts, programmatic story telling, and beautiful melody that weaves into our emotional depths. It is not easy to create something so moving with so many different sections and versions. Really something that must be listened to multiple times to truly respect.

The worst part about all these calamity themes is that a lot of them were criticized or people didn't want them just because they thought the placeholders would still be better. The effects all the toxicity brought to Dokuro and his lack of knowing how to handle it absolutely destroyed him and the effects are still felt on the artist today. Dokuro doesn't ever want to look back on his calamity tracks despite them being such masterpieces and his newer music that he's been making for the album "They Know Who They Are" brings out so much emotion and pure sadness. It truly is sad for what happened to Dokuro, but we viewers who appreciate these tracks and see that they are masterpieces are truly what bring this composer to continue on and go forward with his passion for making some of the best music on planet earth. You should give some of his newer tracks a listen, it doesn't matter if it's on the channel or not as his newer tracks aren't really video game music, but they are still masterpieces and I think you would enjoy them. Anyway, have a nice day, and I can't wait to see the next upload from you.

(Anyone who's reading this now, basically all of this has been retconned, so don't use it as accurate info for the lore. Read the wiki page for it if you want up to date info :3)
    Alright, lore time!
The Devourer of Gods is a cosmic serpent living in its own realm called The Distortion. Its ability to absorb the powers of anything it devourers and its quite massive ego gave it the title of Devourer of Gods.
One day, the Tyrant Yharim and the Devourer met each other, resulting in an intense fight to the death - however, although Yharim won, he did not kill the wyrm. Instead, he 'hired' it as basically his personal hitman.
    Now, for the sentinels:
The Ceaseless Void is a black hole accidentally created by the DoG while teleporting. After weakening it, DoG greatly reduced its destructive abilities and was able to weaponize it as part of his underlings.
Storm Weaver is the only other creature from DoG's species that we know of. The Devourer adopted it and trained it under its wing. Although this may sound wholesome at first, the DoG would not hesitate to kill it if it stepped out of line.
Signus, the Envoy of the Devourer, was a cosmic assassin who was seemingly hired to take out the Tyrant Yharim, yet was instead taken to the Distortion realm to battle with the DoG. The fight ended in a stalemate and Signus joined the Devourer's sentinels.
DoG's main goal is to devour and absorb the power of Providence, the Profaned Goddess - a deity made out of flames from the sun itself, profaned rocks and a crystal hidden underneath. Its enormous energy would allow DoG to become infinitely more powerful, even more than the Tyrant. The player is able to lure the sentinels and the Devourer using a Rune of Kos which contained part of the Profaned Goddess' power after her demise.
Wow, that was long as hell. I won't be surprised if nobody even wants to read all that haha.
Anyway, absolutely great analysis Marco! I havent even noticed some of the things you pointed out before.

    "Brutal confidence."
That is the Devourer of Gods in a nutshell. A powerful Wyrm who can absorb the strength of anyone he devours, growing his tail and his ego ever so larger. Even though you felled all three of his sentinels, and a literal GODDESS (Providence) that he couldn't get to first, he was still arrogant and lazy, thinking that he could kill you and absorb your power with ease. Throughout the fight, he gradually realizes the stakes involved in this, and he fights you more and more ferociously.
It starts with excitement for such a worthy opponent, but it quickly turns into fury and rage, because he realizes that you could kill him, and he's afraid. He's terrified of death, and he realizes it's coming right his way. The Devourer's final phase is him swallowing his ego and holding no bounds. He's enraged, determined, and fueled by nothing but a burning desire to kill you.

A tooltip from the item "Metastasis" actually gives some insight into the Devourer's boundless hunger for power.
A contemplated possible future of the cosmic serpent,
A gruesome warning for those blinded by the hunger for power.

  • @GeorgeCowsert
    @GeorgeCowsert ปีที่แล้ว +183

The Devourer of Gods is one of few beings the Terrarian gets to fight with no need to feel remorse or compassion.
The DoG is, essentially, just a hyper powerful and rare species of worm that assimilates the raw power of those it consumes, which lead to the DoG snowballing in scale until it was just casually consuming godlike entities and hiding in a pocket dimension.
However, this method of obtaining power is slow and inefficient, meaning Yharon, Calamitas, Draedon's machines, and Yharim all out scale the DoG and were able to control it.
The DoG was given armor by Yharim's chief scientist Draedon, allowing it to be resilient to the bane of all worms: piercing weapons (which is a meta joke as piercing weapons can hit worms multiple times) in order to effectively smite up and coming heroes that Yharim feels is worth killing.
But the Devourer of Gods... is just a disposable asset.
Much like if you caught a rabid bear, gave it armor, and let it loose on towns you don't like; the Devourer of God's is a purely temporary asset that will get killed eventually, whether it be by your hand or another's. It's impressive, but a liability in the long-run.
That's why Yharim considers you a threat when you kill Yharon, the boss you have to beat before you can fight Calamitas herself and/or Draedon's machines.
The DoG is not his most valuable asset. Yharon, his only living family; Calamitas, the only living human that could rival his power; and Draedon, a scientist so brilliant and twisted they made machines of a similar caliber as Calamitas...
They are his most valuable assets.

One of my favorite parts is at 10:43 where the calamity bells play the DoG's main melody for the first time. It's like a precognition of sorts where you have heard of this monstrosity in legends, the realization that there is no going back from the confrontation with this cataclysmic force and that one of you is going to perish this day. When it changes to the electronic sound you can really feel its presence. The calm parts and the changes back to the bells also signify to me how the DoG is fading in and out of our dimension, which is in fact its signature ability!

I must admire your great precision in meaning, I just want to mention a few things about the Servants of the Scorgue:
Type W stands for "storm Weaver", a creature of the same species as the DoG, that's why its melody is the most repeated.
Type V is for "ceaseless Void", an error in the realities due to an attempt to cross the dimensions by DoG, for this reason his melody is so wild and very erratic since he is a black hole and he has a hard time following orders.
Type S is for "Signus", an assassin who made a pact with the DoG to be the third Servant, the melody is more rhythmic than the other 2 for being the most "obedient" of the Servants.
Finally the Type D "Type Devourer"
This is not implemented in the game, but it is here since when you defeat the DoG phase 1, the Servants fight again while their Master gets stronger, it sounds so brutal since here they are weaker than before, they are giving their all and it is his final breath.

"You are no god, but I shall feast on your essence regardless!"
The Devourer of Gods is of a certain species of worm/serpent that can usurp the essence and power of the things it eats. The Devourer in particular managed its way into some very juicy meals at a point where no one really considered the species a threat, and suddenly there was a ravenous being tearing through the world and only getting stronger. In response, the Devourer was driven from the world, retreating into a pocket dimension, and the rest of its species was hunted down and genocided, save for the Storm Weaver (Sentinal W), who escaped and was taken in by the Devourer. This was not an act of benevolence, but a check on the Weaver's growth, as if it got lucky enough it could challenge the Devourer. Weaver is living on borrowed time, it will either die to the Terrarian, or overstep its boundaries and be killed by the Devourer.

I like to think DM Dokuro's influence on music will span throughout history (hell, even the bells throughout the soundtrack are named "calamity bells" by many on the internet), despite him leaving Calamity after some well-known reasons by the Calamity community. My favorite Dokuro track. It carries so much weight and is very fitting for the fight in the Terraria mod. He is honestly probably one of my favorite bosses of all time. In the Scourge of the Universe portion and the Universal Collapse there are scales moving up and down in the background, mimicking the segments of a worm or slithering of a snake since the D.o.G. is a massive worm piercing through dimensions. I also think that the bells in this song almost feel like a warning, that if the player fails the Devourer will consume everything, and that not even a god could stop him. Also, the calmness before the Universal Collapse mimics the battle in game. There is a pause between phase 1 and phase 2 where all is quite, and it seems like the player has won. Then, one chat message in game gives a bone chilling response to the players victory: "It's not over yet, kid!" The Devourer bursts out of his dimension, now wearing his cybernetic armor. Than Universal collapse picks up, and the song slowly devolves more as the Devourer becomes more desperate. Before his death, he gives on last message to the player. "A GOD DOES NOT FEAR DEATH!" he cries as he picks up his speed and tries to surround the player and end them. Such a beautiful soundtrack and wonderful analysis done by you. You make amazing videos and I am so happy to see what you'll cover next!

Fun fact; Servants of the Scourge (Type D) is an unreleased version of Servants of the Scourge DM Dokuro added for this mix specifically. I like how it has an almost reflective property, it fits as a perfect reprise before jumping into the raw intensity of Universal Collapse
Edit: I also love the long, whining pitch in Universal Collapse. It legitimately carries the energy as if the universe around you is dying and letting out one last defiant shriek as your battle against this cosmic entity rages at its peak

It feels like every part of the Servants' themes come in two distinct pieces - a piece conveying the essence of each Servant, and a piece conveying the response of the player to each.
W - Storm Weaver - is both grandiose but also frantic. Storm Weaver is the only other member of the Devourer Worm's species, and it bears the same great potential, but its stronger counterpart is watching. It feels the need to express its splendour, but it's stifled, threatened even. The player responds to this grandiose and frantic onslaught with a more structured and solemn dirge - an acceptance of the battle, both current and oncoming, and though the Weaver flees its fate, the player does not run. Thus, the Weaver is defeated.
V - Ceaseless Void - is an unthinking aberration, less a being and more, well, a void. It exists to destroy. It seeks to carry out that reason of existence. But it is not alive in its own way - it has no true consciousness. The player responds with a quicker, more complex rebuttal - the player has come so far through their own capacity to live, adapt, and think. They wage a war of intelligence, and the Void cannot win that battle.
S - Signus - is not fearful, nor unthinking. He is intelligent and calm, but his theme portrays who he is. A cosmic assassin, a being not of destruction itself but merely of malice. His theme is mechanical, complex, and threatening. The player responds with their birthright - the will of a hero, pulling the music back into the light, denying Signus the right to twist the battle into a slaughter. A fair duel is not Signus' forte.
With three answers to three attacks, the servants fall, and the Devourer makes its own demand. Bleed, die, and be consumed.
    The player refuses, of course.

Uniquely, the Rune of Kos, a summoning item used to summon the Sentinels of the Devourer, can be used to summon all three of them, but not at once, it's all dependent on the area the player is currently in.
The Ceaseless Void can only be summoned in the Dungeon and enrages outside of it, and I always thought this described how the Devourer confined the all-encompassing hunger of the Void, that was quite literally ceaseless in its attempts at devouring everything surrounding it. The Devourer was teleporting too much and caused it to manifest, so he confined it and made it one of its servants.
The Storm Weaver can only be summoned when the Rune of Kos is used in space. This describes to me how the Weaver was one of the only other remaining Wyrms out of the DoG's species, and how it's able to control the weather. The Devourer took the young Weaver under his wing as a servant and apprentice, but would not hesitate to end its life if it acted out.
Signus, Envoy of the Devourer, can only be summoned in the Underworld, and honestly describes to me how assassins like him always come from the darkest places. Well, former assassin, because Signus was defeated by the Devourer and enlisted as one of his servants.
To whomever actually read the entire thing, I thank you. I love this mod and this piece moves me. ❤

Signus (Type S) was originally contracted to assassinate the DoG, but was beaten, and now serves under the very thing he was sworn to destroy. Perhaps he has faith in the player, hoping that they may finish what he could not. Such is why his melody is so melancholic.

I just need to be confident, YES! THAT'S IT!" and the rest of the music comes back, backing you up on your own confidence of beating the _Devourer of Gods_ which, is really impressive to just think about. Maybe its more about the NPC's reaching to you in the pureness of a guitar, in that instant, maybe its that moment of "The power of love and friendship", but it feels so good.
Also I love you chose the nonstop mix instead of going individually on the tracks, I absolutely am in love with the mix. Calamity is one of the best mods I have had the pleasure to play and the music is one of the core components that make it so also a suggestion for you to listen to is sealed vessel from hollow knight it is honestly one of the most tragic boss themes I have listened to and makes feel sorry for the vessel

So glad I got to experience these tracks with you on the live stream, and even more so that you dedicated a video to these songs individually, even if I did get put in time out momentarily for getting too hyped lol. DM DOKURO's contribution to Calamity was incredible and it's a shame that he won't be there to create Yarhim's theme when we finally face him. Great video as always man. Looking forward to more.

god, i love dokuro’s works. he has many good tracks outside of calamity, such as: still here, bacteriophage(personal favorite), the momentary highs and the unfathomable lows, and much more that i haven’t heard yet. a lot of them have vocals, though mostly artificial. please check them out if you like dokuro!

Thanks for the respect! The intros are fun. This one is an interesting one, since I seem to come away with a different opinion every time I listen - sometimes, my brain appreciates the complexity and movement of the pieces that Dokuro wrote for the DoG, but other times I feel like the osts around this boss are just a little too repetitive, or I'm not quite feeling the synthetic elements.
Marco, I have come once again to beg on my hands and knees for you to check out Dark to Light from PSO2. I'm too tired to check what day this is, and I haven't been able to keep up since my life has been real busy, but I will never stop!

I wish you all a nice day.

DM DOKURO's stuff is really good and masterfully made. Most people know him for his Calamity mod music, but his personal/other projects are really good too!
He's currently composing an album called "they know who they are". Some songs contain lyrics (sung by artificial intelligence programs), and some of them are a lot more atmospheric.
I was wondering if you considered analyzing that album? Granted, it's still in the works, and it deals with some extremely heavy and personal subject matter such as self loathing and being toxic to yourself, so it's understandable if not.

I don’t know if anyone has mentioned or asked you to react to this but you should listen to the god of war 2018/Ragnarök soundtrack by Bear McCreary. The both of them are absolute masterpieces of both gaming and music.
Also DM Dokuro is one of my favorite artists I’ve ever found. I found him before I even knew of the amazing calamity mod and his music is what made me play it and why I replay it to this day. His music has forever changed my view of music and how much one guy can do with enough passion for something, it is sad for what happened but I’m glad he leave to for his sake. My favorite theme is still Fly of Beelzebub, gotta love that 6/8.
Anyways thank you for your time love your videos, keep up the great work.

How in the world is there so much depth in a Terraria Mod. Lore for the DoG, Dokuro being bombarded with hate even though this song is such a banger, then this song's meanings. I wanna play Calamity now.

I am so glad this video exists... In my personal opinion Universal Collapse and to a lesser extent all the other DoG themes is the Magnum opus of Terraria's entire music lineup, not just those of Calamity, and one of, if not the most iconic fanmade soundtrack of all time. Definitely deserved this long and serious analysis video.

The bells tend to appear more towards the end of the game, it might be because they represent the main antagonist Yharim or the conflict he is involved in, for example, in this boss fight, we fight against one of, if not the most powerful ally of Yharim. The bells also appear quite a lot in Calamitas', Draedon's and Yharon's themes for similar reasons.
However they also appear in Providence's theme, Providence being one of Yharim's main rivals, along with Xeroc, who's related themes also feature these bells.

I honestly think that the Devourer would have made a better final boss than SCal, just lore wise. Also, from what I remember playing the mod, the DoG fight is a lot harder at that stage of the game

    • @termi_sh
      @termi_sh ปีที่แล้ว

@@akihidekaratsu1128 I mean Yharim is meant to be the final boss, the devs just hadn't gotten round to it
