Used to drive a 2013 Toyota Sienna and spending over a thousand on fuel. So traded in for a 2018 Prius Prime. Now more than 4000 miles a month in May. A lot of highway miles with everyday charging. I am getting 71 mpg. over 640 miles for less than 9 gallons... Just incredible. A lot smoother and quieter than Sienna too.
Great engineering in this car. 54mpg is amazing. 11 seconds is not slow. That was normal not too long ago (90s) and we all drove fine. I own 2011 Prius. 85K and never been in shop. Looks aren't important to me. A car is a tool. Manufacturers love people who buy on looks, not capability. Since so many buy based on looks Alex, I wouldn't mention "lipstick" glove box capacity or looks if you want men to like a car.

Great review and presentation. Been a Prius owner since 2011 and over 40000 it averaged 46.4 mpg. Want to be able to go about 80 miles before charging on a plug -in, so will have to wait for more progress.

Thank you! You are the only person I have found that talks about road noise, which as a commuter is very important to me. I spend over 85 miles of CA highway commuting every day, and I really want quiet and smooth. Most reviewers spend so much time talking about windy highway driving, and that is fun and all, but fairly useless to me 90% of the time. So thank you.
I think the Prime looks ALOT better than the regular Prius; there's a lot still going on in the design but it isn't as hideous as the vanilla Prius. The addition of the one-way clutch however finally allows to Prius Prime to achieve full range EV operation, something I thought was odd as it was missing in the last Plug-in Prius.
A lot of people still think Tesla Model 3 and the Chevrolet Volt/Bolt will kill this. I frankly disagree; 1. It's price aggressively which is good as Toyota recognizes the competition this car will face and 2. Drive ANYWHERE in SoCal and COUNT the number of Priuses on the streets; the Prime will sell by itself given its popularity, resemblance & recognition as a sturdy, reliable and fuel efficient runabout.
I was wondering why you would pick this up vs the Volt, but you did a great job explaining all the differences. Another great review Alex!

So glad it finally got lumbar support that's the only complaint of my 06 I have besides the oil usage. Long trips were painful as I have a back injury from Iraq my 96 ram is more comfortable than my 06. Sucks they only seat 4 instead of 5 but looks great.
Thank you for such a thorough explanation of everything including a continual comparison to the Volt. I have spent months thinking that the Volt would be my next car (after driving a 2nd gen Pruis for the last 10 years). I test drove the Volt this summer but wanted to wait for the plug in Prime to arrive in November. After experiencing the cabin environment of the Prius, the Prime is going to be my next car even through the Volt is much more fun to drive (seems like a rocket versus a cruise ship).
My question is: What color is that blue? In your review it appears turquoise in some video frames and nearly royal blue in others. I can't find one to look at in southern CA...they fly off the lot before I can drive a few hours to look at the color in person.

16:30 Electricity isn't free. At any commute distance, it's cheaper to operate this car than a Chevy Volt. Even at the same price, this would be the better deal. That's even before considering reliability, which is also certain to be better in this car.

The Prime goes 25 miles on 7 kWh of electric energy, while the Volt takes you 53 miles on 14.1 kWh of energy, so the electric drivetrains have similar efficiency. At ten cents per kWh, that's around 2.8 cents per mile. On gasoline, the Prime gets around 54 MPG while the Volt gets around 42 MPG. At $2.50/gallon, that translates to 4.6 cents/mile vs 6.0 cents/mile. Because of its longer EV range, the Volt will be cheaper for commutes under 89 miles.
Reliability-wise, most people are concerned about the engine. But, if 80% to 90% of miles are in EV mode, the gas engine will have hardly any miles on it anyway. After 200k vehicle miles, the gasoline engine has only 20k to 40k miles. And the Prime will always have more gasoline engine miles because of its shorter EV range.
+Dan Sanger Your efficiency figures are wrong. Check fueleconomy dot gov. The Prime goes 25 miles on 6.25 kWh of electric energy, while the Volt goes 53 miles on 16.43 kWh of electric energy. California gasoline is currently averaging $3.00/gallon. California electricity is about 20 cents per marginal kWh. In California, driving 53 miles (which should advantage the Volt the most) would cost $3.29 in the Volt, and $1.25 + $1.58 = $2.83 in the Prius Prime.
Even at 16 cents per marginal kWh, the Prime would be cheaper at 53 miles range (again, a range that should advantage the Volt the most). The Volt would cost $2.63, and the Prime would cost $1.00 + $1.58 = $2.58.
A lot more goes into reliability than simply the engine. See J.D. Power. The Volt has a poor reliability record, and the Prius has a stellar reliability record.
+hitssquad - Thank you for the EPA link. Indeed, my figures were different, but in my defense I was using the 7kWh figure for the Prime's usable battery capacity from this video.
The EPA website has a really nice calculator where you can plug in daily commute miles and total annual miles and it will calculate gas and electricity consumption for different PHEVs, and cost based on national average or by state.
I plugged in a 50 mile roundtrip commute and 15k miles per year and got the following for the 2017 Volt vs. Prime in regards to fuel costs (electricity plus gasoline):
National Average:
Prius Prime: $583
Chevy Volt: $615
Washington state (my state):
Prius Prime: $489
Chevy Volt: $386
California:
Prius Prime: $620
Chevy Volt: $707
So, the Prius Prime fuel costs are generally cheaper, but the Chevy Volt is cheaper in my state. But, honestly there isn't that much of a difference between them in any case, both being quite low.
One interesting difference is in the number of miles put on the gasoline engine. For the Prius Prime, it's 7592 miles per year, while on the Chevy Volt it's only 338 miles. That translates into more oil changes and other maintenance on the Prius Prime engine. After ten years you will have 75920 miles on the Prime engine but only 3380 on the Volt engine. The calculator also predicts 14 annual trips to the gas station for the Prime, but only one for the Volt. Aesthetically, the Volt is much more EV-like in this user scenario since essentially all the miles are EV miles, while less than half the Prime miles are.
Also, when comparing the efficiency, we should consider that the Volt is more powerful, having much faster acceleration than the Prime. The Volt 0 to 60 time is 7.5 seconds vs. 10.5 seconds for the Prime (and the Prime may be even slower in EV-only mode).

The thing I like about the prius is that it doesn't lose sight of being first and foremost - the most efficient gas car, even as it stuffs 25 miles worth of battery into the hold.
...And the battery is upgradeable as technology improves.

Price and overall MPG make this an interesting vehicle. I do agree the rear end looks best on the prime. I hate the large-screen. I hate the white accents. I don't appreciate the loss of a spare tire.
Great Review Alex. This does look better in the front end but the rear is still weird looking. The MPG is great but that 0-60 time is scary. I average about 42 in my Camry hybrid but it does have passing/merging power when I need it.
I think the prime will get a smaller size battery that can hold the same amount of electricity in the future, just like the volt, it's just about the matter of time.
So after all the BS talk about TOYOTA and the hybrid line, every other company is now releasing hybrid as well, even in 24 HRS of LE-MANS you see HYBRIDS now, and before that Audi used to talk crap about the Toyota Hybrid in Le-mans and now they on hybrids too...
Max it’s all just silly business politics, but we have to keep in mind that this transition to hybrid benefits the whole world population. The political “BS” shouldn’t get in the way of progress.
Great video as usual Alex. This car has a lot going for it. The price is really attractive, mpg is great, and it is rich with features.
My negatives:
- I still don't like the gauge placement in the Prius line.
- No spare tire is a big deal for me
- White accents do not appeal to me.
- I think the large screen looks so out of place and it wouldn't matter how much they changed the design. It's just too big for a dash board.
The negatives are a bigger factor for me than one might imagine. They are enough to have me looking elsewhere. I'm not saying I won't buy a Prime, but I will strongly consider other cars.
I do like the look of the Prime. It looks "spacey." I sat in one today, and the seats seem comfortable. The one I sat in was with leather. Perhaps it's going to be better than the cloth seats. I still don't understand if you have to charge the car every night. I'll find out soon.

Love to know your thoughts. Would you chose a new 2017 Volt LT standard equipped model, or the mid level Prius Prime for 29 grand? I had an offer to get the Volt and it is Tempting, especially with the over 200 mile range and power.

One thing to remember too is that the owner of the car spends most of their time INSIDE the car, not outside. Yes, it's fun to walk up to your car and feel good about what you see, but that is a short lived experience.
I don't mind the external funkness of my 2016 vanilla Prius. The interior is great and that's what I spend 90% of my time staring at (I try to catch a glimpse of the roadway now and then too). If people are vomitting on the sidewalks as I drive by... it's really not an issue.

Nice Plug in........ BUT I would not trade it for my LEXUS 200h Hybrid..... I HATE ROAD NOISE ESPECIALLY THROUGH DRIVE BY WIRE NO ROAD FEEL STEERING. My LEXUS is quiet for a Hybrid thanks to 200 pounds of sound damping materials. I get 45-47 on city and freeway driving at 60-65. My last car was a Mercedes S Class very quiet and 28mpg highway 17 mpg City Nice to see the gas savings. A used Tesla is on my bucket list S80 Performance. Cheers
I am a current owner of a 2012 Prius. I don't like the look of the 2016 Prius (UGLY!). I wish Toyota would make the regular Prius look like the Prius Prime. I am waiting for Toyota to "refresh" the new Prius and make it look like the Prime before I would consider buying it.
The regular Prius is done, now that this is out. This car actually costs less, given the government tax rebates available for it. Don't wait any longer. Buy this now. You don't need to plug it in. It's a better car than the regular Prius, even if it's never plugged in.
I love my current 2012 Prius also and the good gas mileage it is able to achieve. I will wait for the refresh of the new Prius (exterior). I think Toyota will eventually make the regular Prius look like the Prius Prime exterior wise. I don't like the exterior look of the 2016/7 Prius. I can wait patiently for the refresh in 2 years.
I have a 2016 std issue Prius, and know what you mean. The car really only looks weird to me though when I see it from behind. Those tail lights! But like the bald spot on my head, I rarely see 'um! LOVE my Prius!

Toyota has some smart thinking engineer which optimize all dimensions to create the best product. GM, on the other hand, just think about stuffing the biggest battery they can fit into the car and max out everything without thinking of the long term consequences. Who is smarter?

A fuel economic car attracts socially responsible buyers, usually families. Family buyers won't tolerate a 4 seater.
Suggestions:
- change the stormtrooper white panels to black
- try to add a rear wiper
- change back to 5-seater
Being a family man considering hybrid / plug-in hybrid, these changes will make prius prime perfect, lest I will probably go for Hyundai Ioniq

after seeing this prius I like my 2012 plug in better . I have a 7" touch screen pioneer with aftermarket speakers. Bought for $20K used w/ 20K miles. The new design really looks bad and most men like myself wouldn't like. Toyota needs to design the prius better. the interior and especially the exterior. Toyota needs to make an awd pickup w/ the plug in prius motor set up but with 20+ mi elec range and an extra cab 4 seat. Like the small toyota pickups of the 90's but w/ awd extra cab and w/ plug in prius engine w/ 25+ plug in miles. Now that would sell and would be NICE !

In HV mode, engine will actually charge the battery while the car is running to approx 80%. Even in HV mode I'm getting 64mpg on the highway and over 75mpg on my normal in-town commute!

Holy crap Toyota, I don't like the look of the new prius, thinking of getting the prime instead but it seats only 4!!! Even chevy volt went from 4 to 5 seater. I can't believe toyota went backward with its plug in prius in terms seating arrangement.

Well there are other things that can affect performance like overall voltage and battery temps. The latter especially with an air-cooled design like the Prime has.
fotomotovfr temperature would of course effect it, but SOC is a non issue since the Prius won't use all the available capacity. According to Prius the performance shouldn't change from one end to the other of the battery. I gather the max output of the battery exceeds the motor's rating by enough of a margin that the battery is not the limiting factor.

Hybrids are a waste of money either go all ICE or all Electric. You have two power trains to maintain or repair. In the long run it will cost the owner more money to maintain or repair a Hybrid than buying just a ICE car or just a Electric car. Car reviews never go over the cost of fixing a car after you get it home.
This power train will never require repair. Oil changes are only once every 10,000 miles, and you can safely stretch that to 12,000 once the warranty runs out. Spark plug changes are only once every 120,000 miles, and you can safely stretch that as far as you like.
You've got that exactly wrong. Because the electric motors drive the car from dead stop, and the gasoline engine only engages once the car is already rolling, the ICE on a Prius tends to last MUCH longer than a conventional ICE. In addition, the Prius' CVT transmission tends to be simpler and less prone to repairs than a muti-gear transmission. In addition, the Prius has no reverse gear wheel at all - it uses the electric motors in reverse for this. :)
Guy Fawkes The "eCVT" in a Prius isn't an actual CVT. It's a one-speed planetary transmission with a differential for blending the power input between the electric motor and the engine. See: PriusChat.

Alex, I like your reviews. All of them. I also think all Prius models are unattractive, with an ugly exterior. The headlights, the tail lights, they all look bad. Other Toyota models are ok though. I think Toyota should ask BMW to design the exterior of the Prius. I am sorry if I sound sarcastic. That is just my opinion.

the prius is the most aerodynamic coefficient en in the market.... when other manufacturer make a better coefficient, i guess Toyota will ask them...

Why do car designers design passenger vehicles that do not accept the average sized passenger? This is in my book, not only a deal breaker, but it is also a screaming advertisement that the industry that manufactures, regulates and sells them have contempt for either reality, the consumer, or both. And that makes them untrustworthy morons in my book, which happens to also be a checkbook.
The battery packaging in this car is terrible for a liftback. 5 inches higher than seats trunk floor? That and the middle rear seat is missing. The overall volume is fine but the increased trunk height makes any large tall items possible to block rear window visibility.
Ironically enough regarding battery packaging since the Volt is mentioned in the video; the Volt also does not have a middle rear seat but the trunk isn't extremely higher like it is here in the Prius Prime. Even though the Volt has a much bigger battery and twice the EV only range over the Prime, it doesn't feel like a huge compromise in trunk (albeit smaller) practicality like the Prime does. That and the 0-60 is almost half the time at 8.5 seconds.
Idk, the Prime seems like a miss to me. Volt gets only 42mpg combined but because you have 53 miles of EV only range you almost never actually use the gas. That and the acceleration is practical unlike the Prime; can't imagine driving around a car that takes 15 seconds to do 0-60...
The Volt back seats are only for kids, though. I never see people accelerate faster than about 20-seconds to 60, regardless of what acceleration rates their vehicles are capable of. Even in EV mode, if you floor it from 0-30 mph in this car, you will beat every vehicle around you every time.
People who need to accelerate from 0-60 in the least amount of time are just speed-oriented people who need the ZOOM to feel like they're getting someplace. Guess who gets into more accidents? I'd say the person tooling around with speed being more important than getting around as efficiently (and cleanly) as possible. Haters gonna hate.
By the way, I tell people who say that this car is "butt-ugly" etc. that it's the ugliest car that you're hardly ever going to see at the gas station!

volt runs off the ev motor all the time so it's more like a i3 rex. this is a plug in hybrid where the gas motor powers the driveline too.
Actually the current Volt spends most of its time in parallel hybrid mode like a Prius when the battery is depleted. While a true serial hybrid has always been possible in the Volt GM has severely limited its use in the latest version because it improves fuel economy. People don't do it, because it costs money, and it tears the vehicle apart. You don't have those problems in a Volt or Prius Prime. They can actually be used, as opposed to merely serving as bragging rights.

ugh... the Prius, making electric cars look bad... and I'm not even talking about the looks. I'm talking about the way Toyota uses the EV mode, sluggish, tiny battery and the crutch of a gas motor.... A full EV is WAY more fun to drive. I thought the Prime would be better, but it looks like it's all the same crap from the regular Prius with a tiny EV range... Get a full EV, you'll be doing yourself, the planet and our eyes a favor.
