    The 70’s columbo scores are so good, the haunting quality of billy goldenbergs music especially stands out and his output in general was always top notch. Don’t be afraid of the dark is another perfect example of his unique sound. I really miss this kind of film and tv music.

      @@safakacar3965 absolutely It’s possibly his best work and one of my favourite films, I never get tired of watching duel. I did get a recent release of that score and busting on cd, hopefully more of his amazing music will get released for a new generation to enjoy and appreciate what’s missing from many modern film and tv scores.

      These TV soundtracks are miles ahead of other TV shows, they are part of what lifted Columbo to immortality.

    Hauntingly beautiful and wonderfully versatile in setting each mis-en-scene of the episode. This leitmotif was as essential as the characters in moving the story from murder-to-ransom drop off-to-unraveling the plot-to laying the trap-to catching the perpetrator. Goldenberg was a maestro!

  • @meltyenjoys

    This track is so memorable. Perfectly creepy and eerie where it needs to be - but is also capable of being a little fun (like the scene where they are in the plane together). So well done!

    "How come almost every piece of music that Billy Goldenberg has composed, has never been given a physical release, cd or lp...his work on tv especially Columbo is brilliant. Dual was released by Intrada a few years back, but Goldenberg did so much more. This man needs more respect, his music is timeless and serves as a gateway to 1970,s nostalgia. To hear good music nowadays, we have to go back. Back to the 70,s when guys like Billy Goldenberg were at the top of their game."

      Well that's not true. But I love the very advanced highly dimensional Harmonies as well as his melodic constructions. Wow genius. But there are plenty of good contemporary composers Jeff Beal is one. PS I was 11 in 71 watching this on tv when it 1st aired. It influenced me.

      ...a few pieces have been released in the last five-to-ten years (through La La Land, maybe, or a comparable label focused on curating and sharing awesomely cool, but relatively obscure TV and Film Music grooviness), but not much that we know of, so your point is made... The nearly Lawless Frontier of TH-cam, however, continues to make up the difference. Cheers!

      @@paxwallacejazz ...Jeff Beal’s music is often very cool and super abundant (another very fortunate, hard-working, prolific composer), but he isn’t Billy Goldenberg.

    One of the best episodes with one of the best compositions. I'll never fathom how composers just "think up" these masterpieces, but I'm glad they can and do. All of our lives are made better because of them.

    Billy Goldenberg used a piano-only version of this theme as background music at restaurants and bars in later Columbo episodes which he scored. And the end music is used as background for the party at Dr. Mayfield’s home during “A Stitch in Crime.”

      I knew it... I knew this was reused in other episodes, but needed the reassurance that this comment gave me. I know there are other Columbo iconic music tracks, but in my opinion, this is definitely the one I associate with Columbo the most.

    The beauty of the older Columbo shows was the haunting, disturbing music. The new Columbos look and sound like Matlock. Murder is not funny or sentimental...it's unnerving.

    • @PerthTowne
      @PerthTowne 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      For me, one of the most important features of a great television show is the score. I agree, the acting and writing of the older Columbo episodes was always so enhanced by the incredible background music.

    • @scvandy3129
      @scvandy3129 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      "DJ Rychlak," Right. In addition "the beauty" was evident in the look of the '68 - '78 "NBC Mystery Movies," too. How so? Because they were shot on 35 mm film, ensuring a rich, saturated, vivid, true look.
      In ABC's revival of "Columbo," beginning in '89, television post-production was moving away from film / negative to video transfers of such, which caused a noticeable 'shift' in the look. Later, digital capture took over as the Director of Photography's and Camera Operator's tool-in-trade.
      Thank you, "Yum Yam."

    Simplely perfect. This incidental composition is listened into the introduction, during the scene when lady is driving her plane Piper, wich music talks about a scene that if well it's not- horror pure precissely, music has that touch of mistery and freedom (to trip a plane) but it is telling you that something bad will happen. That is what I like more, the "atmophere" wich is given by Mr. Billy in each contributuion. Also I like that percussion instruments maybe inherited from Hollywood bossanova ending '60. In fact, this incidental music is romantic too . Chris, Santiago Chile.

    • @fishtolizard3930
      @fishtolizard3930 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Decent Goldsmith Score, for sure... Probably the best thing about the film, next to the electric beauty of Catherine Zeta-Jones. The 1963 Robert Wise directed version of the Shirley Jackson book is where it’s at... especially with its exceptional music by the wonderfully named Humphrey Searle. Please don’t bring up the Netflix series from the Mike Flanagan guy... Showed early promise, then... ugh... unnecessarily long, complicated camera shots aside... but, once again, the best thing about the nearly ten f***ing hours has to be the music by The Newton Brothers, along with a decent cast of talent. Painful to watch them struggle with the writing and direction, though (...sorry, Mr. Flanagan, but you’re another hard-working chuck whose work maybe doesn’t deserve the lauded accolades it continues to receive...). Please pardon our opinions... Also, if you dig creepy Goldsmith, then please check out “The Invaders” from the original “Twilight Zone,” along with “The Omen” (1976), and “Alien.”
