One of my favorite things about these books is that the story doesn’t end in a triumphant and happy flourish. Years after the war, Katniss struggles with nightmares, Peeta is wrecked by his hijacking PTSD, and Haymitch still drinks. But they still find ways to live again. And I just love the message that even though recovering from trauma is unglamorous and bitter work and certain pains will never be undone, there’s still room to heal.

Fun fact, the one that had the bombs idea at the end, the ones that looked like drops, it was Gale, it's in the books, so Katniss knows it was him, he indirectly killed Prim, and she doesn't know if she will ever be able to forgive him. Also, in the movie Gale said that he didn't mind sacrificing civilians (from the capitol).

Just to clarify: The "symbolic" hungergame that Coin was going to do, was a real hungergame, just using the Capitols children. She was literally on her way to just being a new President Snow. So Katniss said that she would vote yes to the hungergame, if she was allowed to kill Snow, knowing that she was going to have to kill Coin instead.
Did you notice that she (Katniss) brought a Nightlock pill to swallow after killing Coin? Peeta and Haymitch stops her from taking it and drags her away.

In the books in his speech (in the movie probably too, but most of it is in the background so most don’t notice anything there aside from Snow’s secret) he said that Snow made him choose between his loved ones being killed and being sold for sex. He had to choose latter, however, when Joanna faced the same choice, being impulsive and defensive as she is, she told him to ef off and all her family was killed. That’s why she said in the second film that she’s got no one she loved anymore.

I remember that. That whole thing pissed me off though because they kept saying Jennifer Lawrence was "too fat", which is just.. lol, wut. I got the gist of why some people were annoyed, but it's hard to look "starving" while not actually starving, you know? Plus a lot of people were saying it in a way that looked like they actually meant Jennifer herself was somehow fat. Doesn't feel like that long ago, but it was a bit before the more sort of "body acceptance" stuff actually kicked off. So some people literally meant she was fat, lol, which was just insane.

The book epilogue basically explained that Peeta would still have the occasional relapse but he would just need a few moments to calm himself down usually gripping the back of a chair or something and Katniss still had nightmares about everything and she would think about all the acts of goodness she's seen. It would get repetitive but "There are much worse games to play" (last line from the book).
Also Katniss and Peeta make a book full of pictures and drawings of all their memories that they want to always remember; people, events, items, etc. One thing that gets added was a picture of Annie and Finnick's son (yes Finnick did still die so take from that what you will).

  • @originalname530

2:53 gale has actually always been the “strategist”. he’s always been better at setting traps than hunting with a bow and it’s shown in the books (and lightly mentioned in the movie i think) that he’s capable of understanding how his preys / enemies think to set the best traps.
the bombs that go off twice - letting time for rescuers to go see / help the victims and getting killed by the second explosion - was gale’s idea and played on human’s compassion, because humans will try to help their wounded
also, something not really explained in the movie is WHY gale’s plan in district 2 is so horrible for katniss. the thing is, both katniss’s father and gale’s father died in the same mine explosion. gale’s plan is to basically trap the people of district 2 inside the mountain, just like their own fathers were trapped underground because of the explosion. it really shows that gale does not care about collateral damages when it comes to winning the war, and prefer to concentrate on the “bigger” goal, which is winning and getting rid of snow’s totalitarian regime.

After Prim gets blown up you get a while chapter dedicated to just Katniss's mental state, attempts at suicide, morphine addiction, and overall just how broken she was.

In all three parts of the story, Katniss chooses not to follow the rules of the system by shooting up, rather than straight ahead. In the first, when she shoots at the pig the Gamemakers were eating rather than at the target. In the second, when she shoots at the force field rather than at Finnick. And in the last, when she shoots at Coin rather than Snow. This is just one example of the masterful metaphor and symbolism that Suzanne Collins crafted. I highly recommend reading the books.
Another which a TH-camr theorised while re-reading the books as an adult: Snow is frozen water, Gale is wind (obviously), Peeta could be related to the word peat, which is similar to soil/earth, and Katniss is obviously the girl on fire. There's a lot of meaning you can draw out there as well when you consider how those elements interact with each other and how the characters play off each other (mostly in relation to Katniss).

The books do in fact show the better understanding of the whole world and system (f.E. what is the meaning of the village in District 12 and why it wasn't destroyed, like the rest of the District). So go check them out. Many people didn't like the 3rd book or the last movie, the purpose of the hunger games in this may indeed be questionable, but at the end, it's important to understand the message of the story, which is - war or rebellion aren't just some bang bang showdowns like in Hollywood movies, they are depressing, they are hurtful and that's why Katniss' potrayal is really well done.
Reaction suggestions: Movies: Planet of the apes trilogy (one of the best trilogys out there), Equilibrium (haven't seen a reaction for this, but it's very good, with Christian Bale), Constantine, Braveheart, Robin Hood etc. :D (in case you haven't seen any of it). As of TV shows, I think you would really enjoy Peacemaker and/or Cobra Kai, since they are very funny.
Looking forward to your next reactions !

I was one of those people who didn't like the third book (and the third movie, for that matter) - but as time goes I realized it was because I was still young (I read it when I was around 13-14 ish) and definitely expected all happy and fun but instead got a very depressing book as the ending. Only after now, all grown up, do I understand how that is much more realistic given the entire story, just like how you pointed out. After going through 2 games and then being shoved into a rebellion she didn't want, it's much more fitting and true to have Katniss be that depressed in the Mockingjay book. I respect that a whole much now and have a whole different perspective on the book (and Mockingjay Part 1 is now my second favorite from the movie franchise too)

Something they cut that was in the books was instead of sneaking to the Capital, Katniss actually fell in line and went through the military training everyone else did and actually was roommates with Joanna and started becoming friends, so they both could earn the right to go to the Capital. Katniss passed her final test but Joanna failed because for her test they flooded the area and she had PTSD from how the Capital tortured her (electric shocks while soaking wet) and had an extreme panic attack; so severe they had to sedate her.

I actually liked that in the books (and movie) the entire time, from beginning to end, we followed Katniss. In the end, her and Peeta lived out on their own, away from society. Coin wanted to have a real actual hunger games, with capitol children, as revenge. She claimed just one, but if she can justify one, she can justify more. She was gearing up to be the new Snow, so she had to go.
In the book it's made more clear, but even in the movies there was a short scene where Gale talks to Beetee about bombs and weapons. His plan was bombs going off twice to also kill the first responders. And it's made clear that the bombs that killed Prim were Gale's idea. Gale is all about killing innocents to win, he was willing to do anything and everything to win. Katniss was not. She wasn't okay with killing civilians or medical personnel. Gale was also pretty adamant that he would never behave like Peeta in those interviews during the first part of Mockingjay. Like, Gale, you aren't being tortured, and brainwashed, and threatened right now, so you are in no position to claim you would never say the things Peeta is saying. Gale is full of sh!t. Those are the main reasons that I (and many others) aren't cool with Gale, as both a love interest, but also as a person. Like, I'm not okay with just killing everyone just to win. With that mindset you can justify literally everything.
With Prim dead, Katniss's main motivation for even volunteering and starting this whole thing is gone.
The ending represents hope. Katniss is still incredibly traumatised from her entire life basically (starving, losing her father, being forced to be the head of the household, a reaping every year, being reaped twice, going through the hunger games twice, war, etc), and so is Peeta (child abuse, reapings, hunger games, torture, brainwashing, war, etc), but the prologue I think, shows that they have been able to build themselves a life, even with trauma and pain and loss they have found a way to, maybe not be happy, but at least content, to love someone and live a life.

I've been looking forward to this one! 😊
This one was action packed. And was better, in my opinion, than the book.
However, this saw the deaths of three of my favorite characters: Boggs(even though he was only in the 2 Mockingjay movies), Finnick, and Prim.
Fun Fact: The kiss between Haymitch and Effie before he left the Capitol was improvised by Woody Harrelson.
And Peeta and Katniss did get their happy ending after he was cured from his brainwashing.

It was always interesting to me, and good storytelling in terms of "this is all pointless" when it comes to war, in general, that Katniss only ever became a public figure and the face of the revolution because she volunteered to save Prim... and in the end, it didn't matter. Katniss indirectly and inadvertently started the revolution, and Prim died as a result of that revolution. So Katniss's selflessness in the first book/movie ended up meaning nothing for the person she was trying to protect, essentially. (It obviously changed everything for everyone else, and is a bit of a trolley problem scenario where the good of the many is greater than the good of the one, but you know what I mean.)

I was looking forward to seeing you react to more of the "real or not real" scenes because it shows how much the bond between Katniss and Peeta truly was. He has loved her for so long while Katniss' feelings for him kind of crept up on her slowly - through how many (little) things of Peeta she kept noticing, like his daily habits and little facts. And you can only know this in the book (and yes!! read them!!) but it's also what bonds them back together after the end and before the epilogue. They keep using it to help Peeta gain his true memories back and go back to being who he truly was. Their relationship is just so well built and it's one of my favorite things of the series.
Nevertheless, still enjoyed your reactions! A lot of people have already suggested The Maze Runner trilogy, another really good book adaptation, so will be looking forward to it if you do going to react!

The two stage explosion may have been Gale's idea, but he wasn't the one who decided to use it, that was Coin. She did it for two reasons: 1.) To turn EVERYONE against Snow with the idea of taking the capitol mostly intact....2.) To neutralize Katniss' perceived threat and/or make sure that Katniss supported her in her bid for power. Snow was absolutely right about her gunning for Prim....her death would bring Katniss back under control. Prim was 13.....the minimum age to join the Army/med corps on missions was 14. She was NOT supposed to be in the Capitol, and would have had to get clearance to get around that restriction from someone way up on the chain of command.
