When your livelihood is in your hands, you tend to be really careful. It's fun to take risks in life; to be in precarious places relying on your will is nice feeling compared to the usual safe monotony of life. That being said, it's no so much about the risk in and of it self - that's just a byproduct. It's about experiencing the world around you and feeling alive. Building up your confidence with preparation & practice paired with a safety mindset *minimizes* accidents... but you know what they say: shit happens.
      Source: I do this.
If you drive a vehicle surrounded by morons driving their vehicles, you're already doing something more inherently dangerous and riskier than climbing on a rock... and it's likely more stressful than it is fun. Food for thought.

I pulled out a human sized rock two weeks ago and took a 10m fall before the rope caught me. Since it was easy terrain I didn't have a free fall and hit the wall mid way, breaking my foot.
Why did it happen? Because it was a well established route that is frequently climbed (there were people on it just ahead of us) so I didn't expect loose rocks. So I climbed too carelessly, even though bolts were about 5m apart and it was a clear no-fall zone.
I'm really glad that no one got hit by the hundreds of kilos of rock that came down but I'm also glad that we were using a semi-automatic belay device even though it was a multi pitch route where people often belay using a munter hitch. Otherwise if the rocks had hit my belayer, we would have both died.
So lessons learned? Be very aware of when it is ok to fall and when it isn't and climb super carefully if falling is not an option, even in easy terrain and even when you expect good rock quality.

Luckily, X's typically appear on routes with lots of big holds, so you can just avoid them and be on your way. I almost always start checking rocks when I see an X on a route through. To me, it's a sign that there are probably bad rocks that haven't been found yet.

i think everyone who ever climbed in a warm/hot country has seen a few skinks scuttling away from them on the cliff. When I used to climb in Australia though, every time I saw a scaly tail poking out a crack/crevice I was worried it was a snake ... it never was but a few of my friends had tales of snake encounters on the cliff

Maybe the previous climber wanted a slow burn game of noughts and crosses with you

I mean, when you're sport climbing bolts like that I'm normally not too concerned about falling

that route looks like super choss! if you want to cut back on the risk of pulling blocks off the wall, maybe start by avoiding shitty ass routes like this one.

What happens if you drop your rope? How would you get down?

    • @denniszhang9278

If you dropped your rope, you'd best call a rescue team! As a general rule, your rope should always be securely tied to someone or something until everyone is back on the ground. E.g. when the climber reaches the anchor and unties to belay the follower, they should clip their harness to the anchor (through a PAS), tie the rope to the anchor, untie themselves from the rope, feed the rope through the anchor and belay device, and then untie the rope from the anchor. Although the order of the steps can vary slightly, at no point in the process is the rope left unsecured, because if the leader drops the rope... well then they're stuck dangling from the anchor until help can climb up to save them :P

My technique for loose rocks is not to climb outside at all because it scares the living crap out of me
